My most memorable moment of Wizards of Waverly Place is when Max lied about being blind to the colour orange so he wouldn't have to take part in sports at school (since the balls are orange) but then a teacher went around their house to talk to the parents about it (I'm pretty sure he had convinced their dad or something to go along with it) and the teacher saw the orange sofas and the dad was like, "Yeah, it's really unfortunate." Hahaha!
Was that the episode where he also used that 'disease to get a girl and with dwane Johnson?

It really is a great show and this is coming from an adult man. Rewatching the show from an adult perspective made me realize what an amazingly well written character Alex Russo is. She goes through the most impactful character development out of any of the sitcoms I have seen, including the adult ones.

@@literallygrass1328 It's definitely better than Family Guy. While I like Family Guy, I do have to admit that it got worse over time in terms of the writing and jokes. Family Guy's later seasons are unfortunately not that good anymore. Wizards actually gets better over time in a lot of areas and the main characters go through substantial character growth.

They actually do reference the movie in a later season! In season 3, in the special 2-part episode with Mason the werewolf, Alex is explaining several mistakes she's made with magic over the years, and she says, "Or that time I accidentally made my family not know who I was." And then Theresa follows it up with, "We get it, honey, you've screwed up a lot" LMAO.
I will reference that episode tomorrow when we go to Monroeville Mall with the iCarly characters.
I dont think Alex was referencing the incident from the movie, but the time she had a Genie and made a wish not to be compared with Justin, and it made everyone forget about her. Thats probably what she was talking about.
Correction: Alex actually wins both wizard tournaments. At the end of the show Justin wins but by unfair means so Alex gets the powers, but Justin becomes the new headmaster of their wizarding school so he gets to keep magic too. Max gets to head the subway shop
justin's win was completely fair. alex didn't have to help, and it broke no rules for justin to accept that help. justin only turned it down bc he felt alex was more deserving of the win.

I feel this is a perfect example of why so many other people love Camp Rock, HSM, etc. Sometimes nostalgia over takes the flaws in these older movies now that were older and can understand so much more.

Just to be clear, Jerry is a much better Wizard than Kelbo, that’s why Jerry teaches the kids magic, and Kelbo is the example of what would happen if Max became the family Wizard

Wizards of Waverly Place was definitely one of my favorite Disney shows as a kid. Haven't watched it in a while, so I have no idea if it's still my cup of tea though

Honestly I still watch Wizards as an adult and it's actually good even if it is targeted at kids. Alex Russo is a very well written character with a lot of depth and she goes through lasting character development throughout the show. I have actually written a character analysis about the main character. Looking at the things she says and does from an adult an adult perspective gives you a lot more insight into who she is and it allows you to understand the brilliant writing behind the character better. On the surface people think she is mean, selfish, lazy, unintelligent, rude, and bratty but their perceptions of who she is are completely wrong. At times she can make selfish decisions but they are never intentionally selfish. What people see as her being rude or mean spirited is just her being honest and being able to see people's real flaws behind the masks they wear. Her distant and over confident attitude is just a wall she puts up to hide her insecurities. She pretends to be 'bad' when she is just lying to herself because inside she's a selfless person with a heart of gold. In general her sarcastic comments and overall witty persona is a defense mechanism that she uses to prevent herself from getting hurt. Alex Russo cares about her loved ones very deeply and has shown countless times she is willing to do anything to help them, even risk her own life. Wizards is a show about interesting magical adventures but it is also about Alex Russo's journey from a seemingly immature and selfish teenage girl to a young woman who is an unexpected hero. I am working towards becoming a writer for video games so analyzing shows with great characters like Alex Russo is a bit of a hobby of mine. Plus this was my favorite show as a younger teen growing up.
@@AuraKumo104 I really like what you said. I also feel like because Alex was so sarcastic and not perfect makes her so much more relatable. Most of Disney channel shows have a super smart genius kid, or a super dumb kid. Alex is not dumb or extraordinarily smart which makes her so much more relatable.

I thought it was implied that near the end that the mom used the stone to wish herself to where the others were, which was how she got to the competition arena. It also explains how she basically manages to appear out of nowhere in an open giant field, because she literally did appear out of no where.
But doesnt the movie say only a wizard can make a wish?
@@blackgrlfly Does it? I only remember the rule that it's one wish per person. Also wasn't the British guy stripped of his powers? He still made a wish on the stone. But I haven't seen the movie in years so I don't remember for sure.

17:02 that is not what happens. Justin does win but also doesn't. He finishes first in the competition, but he tells Dumbledore to give the win to Alex because she helped him get unstuck at a point, so Alex becomes the family wizard but Justin still get gets to keep his powers because Dumbledore gives his job to him to be the next professor or something and max loses his powers and ends up owning the sandwich shop I think. P.s. I forgot what the professor's name in this show so for some reason I just called him dumbledore

WOWP is my favorite Disney Channel show ever. The first couple of seasons did follow the Disney sitcom model for the most part, but later seasons really made the show something unique with all of the dramatic elements, longer story arcs, and once they dug into the lore of the magic world and stopped using magic as set dressing. Alex Russo as a character is so unlike the other Disney main characters, her flaws are a focus of the show and she demonstrates tremendous yet believable character development. Watching it as an adult, it's actually really cool to see how much the writers clearly cared and made the effort. I think it's one of the few Disney shows that got better with each season.
Yes, and these are the seasons that we all know and love! The early seasons did have more ballads, but also more uptempo, Latin tunes in the later seasons. Does this remind anyone of a certain boy band that comes to mind?
This movie was also a banger for me and my siblings back in the day because it was like, entirely shot in Puerto Rico (where I’m from and where I live) and getting that from a Disney property we already loved was so crazy, especially seeing all these places we knew and a bunch of them like, at the most a half hour from our house. Also, the fact that it was an ✨island✨ but they never give it a name was hilarious because *we* knew 😂
Everytime I've seen this movie I cant help but ask how did the family wizard competition go from being the dangerous and intense event that is regarded as a deeply respected tradition we see take place here to becoming a literal gameshow by the finale.
The one in this movie is probably the predecessor of the game show version. You can see the similarities by way of the final challenge in the game show where it is a battle of applicable magic. The one in this movie is also an emergency one, where they have to determine the family wizard or else.

I was always under the impression that the competition in the movie was this ancient ceremony that every wizard family throughout history has gone through and possibly considered almost sacred. Then Professor Crum decides on a whim a gameshow would be so much more fun.

@@clarascats1365 Yeah, the wizard competition was stated to be different depending on the family. Jerry said that his family wizard competition was easier and didn't have the sibling bond test. They apparently made it harder for his kids.

Alex actually wins the family wizard competition because Justin admitted she was supposed to finish first, but stopped to help him instead. Then head honcho man with the beard retires and gives Justin his job, so Justin gets to keep his powers for that and Max gets the sandwich shop.

Yes, this is actually correct. I think he was confused because at first Alex was about to cross the finish line and win but went back to help Justin who was stuck in a tree root. After Justin was freed, Alex let him cross the finish line first at the end. Justin was about to be declared the winner but he felt bad for becoming the family wizard when it was Alex who rightfully won. He told professor Crumbs the truth and Alex was decided to be the true winner of the wizard competition. So technically Justin 'won' the wizard competition at first but only because Alex let him.
I just rewatched the movie a couple of weeks ago, and i was honestly pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it! The show has always been one of my most favorites and a comfort of mine, but from what I remembered on my first watch of the movie, it was…. a bit meh. Like, it was okay. Not bad, but also not THAT good of a Dcom.
So when i decided to rewatch it, just to pass up the time, i was like, “…….. I don’t remember it being THIS good?????” I think the story in general is great, i love how they gave more depth to mostly Justin and Alex’s characters, and the chemistry of the family is always top notch. Definitely planning to rewatch it again soon!
Harper NEVER disappears from the series, and neither does Lily in Hannah Montana!!

They really did tone down Harper’s outfits in the movie. Vegard is right abt the duck outfit. She also had a marker outfit and I think a fruit roll up outfit
Pretty sure they did it to not take away attention from the main plot/important parts and for anyone who might not have watched the series so they're not just like "what the fuck is that"
i'm always amazed at how much wizards holds up, and it's the only shiw where the protatgonist is like the bad girl lazy trouble maker. usually that role is given to the best friend in the show not the main girl
I have also stated how these characters were the top 10 in their grade level and how Alex got nominated for Outstanding Young Citizen one year.
I'm so glad that you still liked it...I was worried when I saw the first bit of the title ngl! Somehow the show does hold up, especially the movie. A classic.

Yes, it is called the Wizards Reunion Alex vs Alex and it was partially written by Selena Gomez to serve as the final end to the show and Alex's journey as a character.
@@AuraKumo104 I think that a Wizards reboot would hold a much better candle to the show, though, and would explore Alex, Justin, and Max’s lives as adults. Much better than the Villains of Valley View show, huh?
@@akrzton1 I don't know what that other show is but a Wizard's reboot might not be a good idea. Every single reboot we have gotten so far wasn't nearly as good as the original and is written more to appeal to the new generation of children rather than the adult fans who watch the shows in the past. That means Wizards might be targeted at even younger kids than the original show like Raven's Home or Girl Meets World. Reboots tend to make the shows even more child friendly than the originals and they often focus on new characters, most often they are the original main character's kids. Even the best reboot, the new ICarly, is dragged down by it trying to appeal to the current generation of kids and it added a really obnoxious child main character with no respect for the original adult characters. Disney also refuses to allow creators to make their reboots targeted at an older audience. Disney canceled the Lizzy Mcguire reboot because they wouldn't let the creator of the show give it a TV-14 rating and target the show at the adult fans who liked the original when they were kids.
What always confused me is the wizard competition here and in the show were completely different.
Wizards of Waverly Place was also my favourite. When Juliet and Justin get together and their parents disapprove at first, but then come around, happened right around the same time I was going through something similar. I used to watch and rewatch the show when I was younger, and I recently just binged the whole thing last year!

i actually said that once, at work. people at the center, were looking at me like i was nuts. i work with adults with handicaps, most of them are strange. i was trying to bend a table, in referrence to spoon bending.
to be fair, when the spells are in Latin they are saying the same these ones say in English, it just feels stupid when you actually understand 😅
I always think of the episode where they say that as long as you can come up with a rhyme, a spell can do anything, and that fact about the magic system has been stuck in my head for the past 10 years.

Alex‘s mom was able to find the magic location of Alex and Justin‘s wizard battle because she got the stone and made a wish to bring the stone to Alex. The stone transported her to Alex‘s location
Just in case no one has mentioned this yet, but there is a 2nd Wizard movie that they released after the series ended. It takes place after the Wizard competition. It's called Alex vs Alex. Both movie are good and I still watch the series as well as the movies every year

The only problem I had with the movie were the camera shots. But only because the show made me used to a static camera angle, that only slightly changed. The movie had it's camera shots in the world itself, which made for really uncanny camera angles of a scene you are used to see from only one angle. That feeling got better when they arrived at vacation

This was one of my favorite movies when I was little. It felt like a fever dream.
Please watch Lab Rats! It's Disney XD rather than Disney Channel so it's more action-oriented, but it's made by a lot of the same folks who made Wizards of Waverly Place (e.g. Victor Gonzalez is a director on both shows). It's super fun!
So mg Disney channel era was like 2015-2019, and then I got Disney +, and I watched all the old shows, and that’s when I realized how terrible modern Disney channel is, wizards of eagerly place, good luck charlie, and suite life are the best Disney channel shows of all time

Like in the end Alex and justin both win, but that's the only family we know of that it happens and it's not fair. What about all the people who tried hard and didnt win. Bam they can't be a wizard anymore? Someone else said this and I liked what they said so I'm gonna resay it also, when Aunt Megan got mad at Jerry and Kelbo she wasnt mad because she didnt win. She was mad that he gave the powers to kelbo who was obviously unfit. I think the whole system wasnt fair. Yes the people who would be irresponsible with the magic like max shouldn't necessarily have ut, but what about the people like stevie? The only reason she started her revolution was cuz she felt everyone should be able to stay wizard. I think that's the fair way.

One of our other favorite places to visit is Kennywood Park in West Mifflin. We go once a week, mainly on Fridays. In the next chapter of The Edge of Normalcy: Part 1, Jill talks to Sarah, James, and Henri about her birthday party the day before at Kennywood Park. That’s exactly why I am here- because I saw this show’s top 2 best Liberty’s Kids episodes, which are Going Home and We the People. The latter episode will most likely be referenced in the chapter, as the former is typically referenced in the crossover series on Kennywood Day.

The only “musical number” I remember from the show was when she had to break up with the werewolf and they did a whole end credits music video to one of Selena Gomez’s love songs.

I remember when it was mentioned somewhere that Selena was crying for real at the ending scene.
She was supposedly remembering a dead pet or loved one when she cried for that scene. Her acting was so good in that movie.

I’ve loved watching you react to all the recent franchise DCOMs. Now do back to the beginning: under wraps, mom’s got a date with a vampire, smart house, P.U.N.K.S., phantom of the megaplex, genius, the thirteenth year, etc etc. the days of old before Disney tried to make a franchise out of everything and they actually had a story or plot…as much as a kids TV movie can have plot.

Ok just because I'm a huge fan of the show I want to clarify that they do reference this movie again and although the parents don't remember Justin and max do. In Alex Vs. Alex which was the last thing that came out for this show, when Alex is talking to those crystal people she mentions all the bad things she's done and she says that she once made her parents forget who she was. So, this movie is still canon in the WOWP universe. And I'm sure you saw at the end, that Justin and Max ask her why she didn't keep her full wizard powers and she says she didn't want anything to change. Implying that they didn't forget.

there was a very early episode where alex met a wizard kid who did charm his parents to let him do whatever he wants with magic and he puts that charm on her parents for her and she ends up getting guilty and reversing the charm on both hers and his parents. So yes charming parents to let you do things they normally wouldnt has been addressed
Also Justin was sitting in the mud cause he dropped his wand and was unsure where it was in the mud

This movie is the reverse of DCOM the Poof Point where a time machine was making the parents disappear, and the kids had to save them.
there definitely was an episode with a boy alex liked that was a wizard, and he was constantly using magic on them to make them not tell him what to do, or something. i don't remember much of the episode, but the message was essentially "this is why the kids don't use magic on their parents". but now i've gotta rewatch the series because of this video, so thanks /j
