Martin Mull (1943-2024) sings "A Time of My Life" on the set of the Doug Kenney funeral scene in A Futile and Stupid Gesture, the movie I was honored to direct in 2016.
He had such a good deadpan sense of humor. He always said that when he was joining a sitcom, it usually meant they were either ending soon or would be cancelled. He is missed.
Crying .. thank you ... RIP Martin .. will never forget those late nights as a kid so long ago laughing with my favorite smartass in all the world ... goodnight and Godspeed
There are so many levels of emotion watching this, not only because of Martin's passing, but in this movie, which was about the history of National Lampoon, Mull was playing an older (never was) version of Lampoon co-creator Doug Kenney. (Kenney having died young in 1980 after falling off a cliff in Hawaii.) It was as if Kenney's ghost had come down, at the age he would be been had he lived, to let everyone know he was OK (especially when many still think Doug may have committed suicide due to the initial underperformance of Caddyshack in theaters.) Rest in Piece to Martin Mull and Doug "What the hell we supposed to do, ya moron!" Kenney.
I'm very saddend I've always admired Martin's film and TV roles, a wonderful actor! A man of many talents; musican and artist. As a kid in the UK in the 90s and 00s his comic timing was perfect and he was hilarious as Mr. Kraft in STTW! His paintings are beautiful too! What a sad loss to the world, which is now a less wonderful place without him! A perfect gentlemen Rest in eternal peace Sir! Fly high!
As a teenager, I made sure I stayed up to see Martin on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He'd bring out an easy chair, talk, play music, and sing like this - with the end result of making you laugh He was a natural entertainer making it look so easy and so innovative. His jokes never went in the direction you thought they might - which made them all the more funny. He made this world a better place, for damn sure.
OMG...thanks for posting...also THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS MOVIE. i grew up a kid who discovered National Lampoon magazine when id find it at garage sales and like so many kids of the late 70s/early 80s fell in love with the movies. also i had a fondness for Bored of the Rings which it wasnt till years later that i connected. Doug Kenney was always on my radar but it wasnt until your movie and recent docs that i got to really learn about him, Henry, and the crew. Martin Mull was PERFECT in it (as usual). Thanks for posting and RIP to the man.
Makes me remember what a great talent and human being he was. Remember him doing blues slide guitar with a baby bottle on Midnight Special On to the next great adventure!
He never did get “Normal”, did he? A happy day for him (onward and upward) and a sad day for the rest of us. “Discovered” him 50 years ago…always made me smile…until now…
Yes we oldies got to see him in Fernwood and other shows as a younger guy. He just was so natural, which is how genius looks. And he was a good man, dogs loved him.
How he never appeared in any of Christopher Guest's mockumentaries is beyond me. RIP Martin, I've been a huge fan since first seeing Fernwood 2 Night in 1977 as a 12 year old. And FM, though at the time I had no idea what that lady was doing under your desk.
…in the 1970s my friend Roy and i, fans of Fernwood and Sex & Violins, drove the 3 1/2 hours to Toronto, without tickets, and bullshitted our way into Massey Hall, to stand by an entrance door to the left of the stage and watched Colleen Peterson open for Martin and his Fabulous Furniture, and then turned around and drove the 3 1/2 hours back home in pure elation…
Went to see him in '74 or '75...he was opening for some other act...Springstein, Springstoon...something...anyway, my friend and I were there for Marty. He had his fabulous furniture and everything on stage. The crowd wasn't into him at first...by the end he had everyone tapping their quarters on their armrests to the tune "Flexible". It was a tough crowd, but he won them over! Then that other guy came on..."The Foreman" or whatever. He was okay. My friend and I left after a few songs...we came to see Marty. Wonder what ever happened to that other guy?
The Martin Mull dinner party fact that I love to shock people with, Jimi Hendrix wanted Martin as the guitarist in the JH Experience. He was THAT good.
I notice how TH-cam got a lot nicer immediately after Martin Mull's death: all the algorithms were directing people to his discography instead of the usual crap.
Fred and Martin, together again. Thank you, David. Safe home, Mr. Mull.
Fred?
@ Fred Willard, his comedy partner and longtime best friend.
RIP Martin Mull.
😥😥
The world was better with Martin Mull in it.
He had such a good deadpan sense of humor. He always said that when he was joining a sitcom, it usually meant they were either ending soon or would be cancelled. He is missed.

A perfect send off for a lovely man who made me laugh. RIP Martin!
RIP Martin Mull. Thanks for the many laughs and smiles (especially when you and Fred Willard hosted "Fernwood Tonight" and "America Tonight.").

My first, favorite comedian. The world is a little sadder now…RIP, Mr. Mull.

R.I.P. Martin Mull - You gave yourself the best send-off any one of us could wish for. 🙏
A man of many talents, and a unique perspective on life.
One of the true GOAT's 🥲
RIP. 80 still feels too soon. Can't believe it's been 6 years since that movie came out, by the way.

Thanks for posting this! Very fitting epilogue. Loved that movie too. About a similar guy who grew up in Ohio and made it big out east.
This movie means so much to me and I’m so grateful to you for it. Thank you for this as well
Fernwood Tonight! Two and a Half Men! Excellent.

Thank you Mr. Mull. Bring back FERNWOOD TONIGHT, it shows your genius from early on. Ripe for streaming, it would be a hit.

rip martin🕊️❤️
How appropriate ❤
hope to sing the same song before I go.
❤
what a special guy. And, he definitely has some Randy Newman in him...and that's a good thing.
This movie makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn't even alive during.
Have a great rest 💟
dang
Genius.
Feels like this song which he wrote for this movie ( his last) was his way of saying good-bye…. (Perhaps he already knew of his illness)
Thanks for the laughs sir…😢
He had great taste in guitars.
Where can I get this song? I can't find it anywhere besides here
.

In the style of Leon Redbone. Very nice.
Was this in the movie, or just something Martin Mull decided to do?
part of it was at the end of the credits, thanks David for posting the whole song! I watched this movie once I heard the news =\
Is he in Heaven, or in Miami? Either way - Godspeed to you Martin Mull.
Was that Fiona from shameless ?
Beautiful and poignant today
This guy was overrated AF
Nice, but could have used a drummer.
❤
