I was born in Tokyo, but my family is from Osaka. Growing up in the US, I speak Japanese haltingly. However, all I know is Osaka-ben. I was in Washington DC and speaking Japanese to a gal from Okinawa and she picked up on the dialect right away. She thought it was funny. :-)
I recently watched 君の名は several times, where characters from 糸守町 speak a special dialect, for example, や in place of だ as copula. But there are still a lot of dialectal lines that are secret code to a Japanese learner like me. I learned that the dialect used in this movie is fictional but is a mixture of real dialects, say, 岐阜弁 and 関西弁. This makes sense, as there are many dialectal lines that can be explained by this video. For example, ん expressing 'not' is attested in several scenes. When みつは is passing by while her father is giving an election speech, he stops to shout at her '胸張って歩かんか'. When さやか asks her 'don't you remember (you were like crazy yesterday)' on the campus, the line goes '覚えとらんの'; and when さやか brings up the coming ceremony, みつは replies '言わんといて'. There are also many other examples of Kansai dialectal lines, like よつは asks her sister '何しとるの' instead of '...てるの' while みつは (actually たき) is rubbing her breast; よつは asks みつは (actually たき) '何で制服着とんの' instead of '...着てるの' when they are going to 御神体; よつは asks みつは (actually たき) 'ちょっと何言っとんの' instead of '...言ってるの' when みつは (actually たき) is asking her to leave the town with their grandma. I'd just like to say thank you to Miku sensei, your videos, not only this one, let me decipher a lot of the lines in this movie, and my Japanese improved a lot after watching 君の名は and your videos. Learning Japanese by watching movies you like is really a good way. It would be super fantastic if you could make videos teaching Japanese and introducing Kansai dialect with famous movies like 君の名は. Anyways, thank you so much and keep up the good work.
I learned Japanese via anime 2 decades ago. It's so nice to see that kids nowadays are still doing that. In fact it's so much easier with everything available online right now, including fan subbed series! Grammatical point: Kansaiben uses the verb「おる」in place of Standard「いる」so「いない」becomes「おらん」. The example you presented「着とんの」is Standard Japanese「着ているの」"wearing" with a「の」at the end for emphatic questioning, which contracts to「着てるの」in Standard. However in Kansaiben,「着ておるの」contracts to「着とるの」and in rapid speech further slurs into「着とんの」 which is the same for most English accents. Most people do not enunciate "What. Are. You. Wearing?" like a robot. In natural speech it's contracted into: "What're you wearing?" "What're ya wearin'?" "Whaddya wearin'?'" For the negative, "not remembering" (although in English it's more natural to say: "don't remember" ---「覚えとらんの」is contracted from「覚えておらんの」which in Standard Japanese is「覚えていないの」/「覚えてないの」。 Ganbatte kudasai ne!
6:14 sounds similar to the intonation of Busan dialect of Korean~ Well Busan is so close to Japan and was controlled by the Japanese. As far as I remember the dialect has received the most Japanese influence in all of Korean dialects 🤔
I lived in Hyogo for 3 years as an exchange student and didn't realize I learned Osaka-ben until I went to Tokyo for a class trip and someone pointed it out 😅 I've been re-learning Japanese and it's been so confusing learning non-Kansai dialect. These videos have helped me refresh my brain

When I went to Osaka I had my first real takoyaki and time just stop! It was so good I had to sit down and think about life! Also Osaka people are so beautiful and so carefree and respectful! I love them!! All of my friends are from Osaka so now I just talk Japanese in Kansai ben. Lol Also I found out Osaka people don't like people from Tokyo and vice versa lol

Last year I was looking for good Japanese language podcasts to listen to while cycling and found them on Spotify. And funny enough I think this video popped up because I follow Dogen, Japanese Ammo with Misa, and Shunchan who's from Osaka. Actually heard "せやなせやな " in a video where Shun was talking to his dad 😆 I thought it was the coolest phrase! That was really funny and educational. Although I found that in some parts the audio was too low (outro for example). There are amazing free softwares that can "normalize" (technical term) the audio and make the quality a lot better. Thank you for the video Miku sensei! Also Alex sensei!
This is so fascinating usually sentences gets shorter when we speak in dialect in my country but in Osaka it gets longer often particularly for females . just wow

I love the different accents. My grandma was born in 川崎市 so of course she speaks “standard Japanese” so when she speaks it’s a bit easier for me to understand. So I think for that reason and the fact everyone learns standard Japanese. I find them really interesting

LOL I never thought Miku Sensei was EVER trying to hide her Kansai style intonation, I mean, her Osaka accent in Standard Japanese is pretty thick, & it's immediately noticeable that she's from Osaka or some other city in Kansai. Nothing wrong with that, it's it's just like learning English from an American from Texas or the South with a stronger Texan or Southern accent. I have Kansai friends from Kyoto & Osaka who can speak with unclockable Standard Japanese (Tokyo style) intonation, & also Osaka friends who can't seem to code-switch even if they've left Kansai (like Miku Sensei) LOL. Osaka is a bit different, as it's the 2nd largest city in Japan & an economic & cultural powerhouse, so the natives are really proud of their accent & heritage. Most won't bother to mask their accent even when outside of Osaka, whereas people from smaller Kansai cities (like in Kobe, Wakayama or even Kyoto) would switch to perfect Standard Japanese intonation outside of Kansai, in case they'll be judged as a hick from some small village. Funny anecdote. When majoring in Japanese in university, I met my friend Tammy from Atlanta, who went to Osaka for an exchange program during high school, so she picked up Osakan intonation & couldn't for the life of her switch to Standard Japanese intonation (our university program was BIG on spoken Japanese), to the concern of all the sensei & herself during oral examinations. Imagine a redhead speaking Japanese with Kansai intonation & the soft lilt of a Southern belle. LOL.
I've been re-watching "Lovely Complex," and re-reading the manga in Japanese this time, and I've definitely picked up on a few things! The "hen" and "n" were pretty obvious from context, as was "akan." And the subtitles straight-up commented on "nandeyanen." Also "seena," (which, I've also seen "nantokasee" -- "do something about it!" -- which really threw me at first). "Toite" was kind of confusing for me, though, so thanks for clearing that up! Is it a contraction of "-teoku," similar to something like, "ittokukedo?" Anyway, definitely recommend the series to anyone interested in picking up some Osaka-ben! Also just generally -- it's amazing all-around.

Just for curiosity, if you want to learn a certain japanese dialect, should you learn the "standard" japanese first and then the dialect ? Learning the dialect first is probably much harder
It's not really harder, just less practical. But I once knew a Japanese exchange teacher who'd had an American English teacher in Japan, who could only understand and speak Osaka-ben.

僕の大学で関西から来た留学生が多くて、初めて生で聞いた日本語が関西弁で、日本に来てから大阪に住んだことしかなくて、大阪から出たこともあまりなくて、彼女の出身が大阪なので、僕も結局関西弁になりました。東京に行って関西弁を抑えようとしても無理でした。

Just for curiosity, if you want to learn a certain japanese dialect, should you learn the "standard" japanese first and then the dialect ? Learning the dialect first is probably much harder
Same with arabic, always go with the standard one first.
It's not really harder, just less practical. But I once knew a Japanese exchange teacher who'd had an American English teacher in Japan, who could only understand and speak Osaka-ben.
