@Joey O'Loughlin We have. They openly and on air ridiculed him because he was a family man, loved his wife and spoke of her often. We loved his music for many years. He had a great manager who was a musician in Slims band. Slim did very well until the manager left.
LOVE this particular song from Slim, what an amazing unique style voice he had, never to be able to compete against. One in a league of his own. RIP.SLIM. ELIZABETH ❤❤❤❤❤
I grew up as Avery young boy with Slim, as my elder brother was a huge fan. I come from Merseyside and as a teenager grew up with the Beatles. Saw them 3 times at the Cavern. However never lost my love for Slim. He is bloody fantastic.
How truly beautiful, this man is so precious, I loved you slim even in 19204 , your voice still magnificent, can’t believe your not here, god bless you & your beloved wife Gerry, I loved you from a girl of 19 years old , know 71 , you were my hunk man, gorgeous dream my man,
I will always be grateful that I was able to take my dear late mum to see Slim & Byron around 1990 in Cardiff, UK....... I never saw her look so happy. Thank You Slim & Byron for a great show on the night!
The lyrics are indeed well and artistically written. Simple and stimulating that move any hearts. Any can sing with ease. Truly, a beautiful and meaningful song yearning to reach one's homeland.
It took me a long time to realise that the lyrics are about someone who has fallen in love with a new land that he would want to make his permanent home, but has to give it up to defend the land of his birth, that he also loves. Torn between them.
You have to remember that most of his songs played over AM radio signal, and you never got to hear the full range of his wonderful sound. His sound today would be more than awesome.
All the people commenting here, wouldn't it be great if we could all get together on some remote island for a week and listen to and discuss the unique greatest singer
Wow! I have "always" enjoyed listening to Slim Whitman! What a GREAT voice - and great yodeler, also! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video. I just subbed your wonderful channel. God bless, Brother Charles Pratt (Charlie)
I felt bad for him in one interview when he mentioned people making jokes and laughing at him. I can't remember what show it was. It was when his album commercial was on TV. From what I read about him, he was a good man.
Richard Skola Sorry. Slim was a great singer, but to date nobody has sold more recordings than Elvis. That includes singles, LP, EP, 8 tracks, cassettes, CD, and MP#. Elvis has sold over 1 billion. The Beatles are second, but quite a ways behind. Richard, your info is defective.
+Richard Skola You are probably correct. A friend of mine who was over Capitol Records in Nashville was asked by me what was their way of selling records. He said that during his time at Capitol they did not understand how to sell records. They knew how to make them but did know the best way to sell them. Along came Slim Whitman. For several months his records were sold through the mail. He was the first one to know what modern marketing was all about.
I beg to differ ...I saw a commercial back in the 80's that clearly stated that Slim sold more records than the beatles or Elvis!!!... ad the TV never lies!!....LOL
Thanks for your recent uploads.... Vow!! So many Slim' songs! I will leave my comment..... Orvsha, I will not disappoint you. Your channel has been one of my favourites now!!
simon templer Unfortunately once I do not agree with you although I am a big fan Slim Whitman, but also Elvis Presley,Marty Robbins fan and many more.Because that's not true that Slim sold more lp,s & cd,s.The Beatles have only made a few good songs for example: yesterday,ob la di ob la da,the ballad from John and Yoko.
simon templer Sorry. Slim was a great singer, but to date nobody has sold more recordings than Elvis. That includes singles, LP, EP, 8 tracks, cassettes, CD, and MP#. Elvis has sold over 1 billion. The Beatles are second, but quite a ways behind. Simon your info is defective.
simon templer Hoi Simon I guess she meant that Slim Whitman only(!) in England has sold more than Elvis and The Beatles because Slim Whitman was in England incredulous popular.
simon templer I remember those TV ads, but I never recall they said he sold more records than Elvis. Naturally, it was a long time ago. I read someplace that he has sold more records from the TV commercials than anybody else, but Elvis and the Beatles have never had their music sold on TV in that manner. I can honestly say I never heard Slim Whitman on the radio, even in the 60s, 70, 80s. That said, I STILL think he was a great singer.
these slim songs are fab just need four walls now with byron my record got destoyed in a fire and i can't replace it caN ANYBODY HELP I KNOW I AM IN ENGLAND BUT I AM SURE SOMETHING CAN BE SORTED I DO HOPE BYRON RELEASES SOME OF THEIR OTHER SONGS THANKS A LOT X
As a very "urban" child of the late 70s and early 1980s, I never quite got Slim Whitman. His ubiquitous ad on late night TV seemed to me a time filler between ads for adult undergarments and local car dealerships. He was so alien to my experience- brought up on FM rock and pop radio- that, as I slouched into my teen years, I assumed that his late career was a sort of Andy Kauffman-esque performance piece, banking on our collective cultural mirth at his weird, warbling yodel. (I think Dave- the ultimate urban hipster- probably thinks in this way, and the makers of the film "Mars Attacks!" several years later realized this.) I suspect now that his fan base in this era was a combination of Europeans, who liked him for his exoticism, and old ladies in rural communities who had been culturally passed by the revolution in pop music in the 1960s and 70s. As I watch this, I'm not struck by Slim Whitman as a mega-talent. He seems to me to have a moderately polished "schtick"- a well practiced falsetto, and a pleasant but not exceptional voice otherwise, which is used to service "safe" and "unchallenging" music that would sit well within a given community. But, hey, if you like this sort of thing, more power to you!
He was a major recording star in the 1950-60-70’s. And then after this show aired. His forte is/was western music when “country/western” split off into western border music and today’s “country” that comes out of Nashville.

Slim was my childhood, he knew there were people who really appreciated him.
Mr. Whitman was a wonderful gentle man. He was a gift from heaven.

His song reminds me of the 1982 cross country from California to Illinois. I miss him and those days !

Never forget, Elvis once opened for Slim Whitman. Slim Whitman sold more records than the Beatles, or Elvis.

Goodbye my dear sister for I have loved you more than words can tell remember this day July 31st 2020 an angel is now in her Angels arms
How much fun !!! Slim Whitman was performing and David Letterman had that long brown hair and hadn't retired yet. Those were the days my friend....
Love the yodel legend Slim Whitman
Legend.
Cozy, soothing
Is en blijft mooi.
corrie Raaijmakers helemaal mee eens hij was uniek.
I never heard of Elton Britt. Now I've got to go in search of his music. Thanks
Elvis also recorded this song, it;s good, one of my favorite.

There are more, but i love this one!
I love this music ,thanks
I am still here slim.
David Letterman is a prick. HIs snide intro of Slim Whitman doesn't change the fact that Slim Whitman had immense and genuine talent.
Has anyone got a clearer upload of this one? This is rare and fantastic. Thank you for posting.
That fulla sitting in the recliner in the white tee !! He is definitely enjoying himself hahaha 😅
Slim Whitman sold more records than elvis and the beetles combined!!....I remember those great commercials from the 80s...

I've seen the video to this by Roger whitaker and it's a tear jerker seeing a big beautiful vessel like that going down
His yodeling was enjoyable to listen to. There is such a thing as 'tone'.

Audio troubles really robbed me of enjoying what seemed like a great interview. MAJOR BUMMER!
Letterman had a hard time not being a smartass. Probably afraid Slim would kick his ass.

Love Slim Whitman but...what's going on with the guys in the recliners and beach chairs? ;p
MY LITTLE INDIAN GIRL, YOU BELONGED TO ME & I BELONGED TO YOU....
Slim sang his ass off!
witteker did this one also.
I never knew that Letterman wore a wig.
I like Roger Whittaker's version better, but Slim Whitman sang it well too!❤
he changed the words "no wicked war in asia"
It's the war in ENGLAND. 1944. BOMBERS OVER MY HEAD REMEMBER IT WELL.

Very nice version, but less convincing than Roger's.
Why, why, why do people keep singing the LAST farewell? It never goes away anyway! Beautiful song, though.
I enjoyed this interview, but it looks like Slim is sitting on his hemorrhoids.
i LOVE sLIM BUT HE RUINED THAT SONG.
