    Thats why the best thing is to develop a personal clothing style that u feel comfortable with, that isn't associated with a specific brand or trend.....its too difficult to maintain long-term.
    Just invest in timeless pieces that u love and feel comfortable wearing throughout the years ❤️

    I honestly think that once you buy a high end product, it never goes out of style. I will always love the GG marmont belt, Valentino rock studs, whatever it is....every item reflects a time period, a moment, and while some say "they eventually come back" that is irrelevant to me. They are good quality products and I love them (I don't have two tons of things, and I love looking for "out of fashion items" that I love on the preloved market). That said, sticking to products without too much embellishment or trendy guarantees that they will be "less out of style" (like the GG belt) over time.

    Louboutins introduced me into luxury brands but I had forgotten and moved on from them after discovering other brands, however literally earlier this week I saw someone wearing some and I loved them on her, she looked stunning. All black outfit - just the flash of red. It ignited my love. I agree that their hay-day has passed but they’ll never be completely gone.

    Great topic, Sophie & I mostly agree with you. I think the Speedy/Boston bag style will always be classic. Regarding the big bag return to fashion, I trained myself during the mini trend to need & carry less so putting minimalist items in a giant bag seems a bit pointless (unless it's strictly a work bag). My biggest bags now are a Speedy 25 & a Loewe Small Puzzle!

    I suddenly realise just how LONG I’ve been watching your videos for. I remember that hat and your constant struggle with glueing new pearls into the earrings and your shoe collection videos (and much later when he autographed a pair and David said “you can never wear them now” and I cried laughing 😂). And whenever I worry about trends, I think of my grandma who used to say “oh if it’s fashionable then it IS beautiful now”. It helps a lot with enjoying the moment. 😄

      @danishpastry6137 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Me too! I've never been an oblique fan (sorry Sophie), cannage is just more classic. In their woven/ embroidered patterns I love their toile de jouy - that sort of pattern has been around for centuries, a real classic, especially in traditional blues or reds.

    I only buy things I like. So when they go out of fashion, it does not matter because I still like them. Sometimes I go off an item, but if I leave it for a while, eventually I return to it. I am lucky in that way! Thank you for the video! (Loving the hat! And for me Boston Bags and Speedys have never gone anywhere! Love 'em!)

  • @tiffanywashington2599
    @tiffanywashington2599 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I wear whatever I like. I am not really trend driven. I can appreciate a hot new item but do not usually feel compelled to jump in unless it really does fit into my lifestyle. My style is definitely more on the classic side and that has served me well. I have pieces that were bought decades ago that I see coming back via social media or in store. It makes me smile because I feel like I am ahead of the curve.

    • @s.a.4358
      @s.a.4358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that’s key, because even if it’s a trend and goes out of fashion, if it fits with the person’s aesthetic and style it will still look good even after the trend is over - cohesive with the other items the person has and their overall style.
      I also think there are trends that are easier to carry off than others. Taking Sophie’s examples, the mesh shoes or the hat are in my opinion harder to still wear, but the marmont belt, Chanel earrings or bowler bag look good with many style options I think. They may not be the “it” thing of now, but they are not something hyper trendy that cannot be married with other items.

    I have a slightly different opinion on this topic. In some cases (not all), luxury items can be a work of art. You can insert an item as part of your style. Fashion should be fun! I can't chase every trend, but reviewing my attire adds a level of self-care. 😊

  • @arpoehler
    @arpoehler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sophie - I love your opinions as always! I think for a lot of these brands, social media is both a blessing and a curse. All of these items were hyped on social media, and I recall seeing them EVERYWHERE, not only in person when I was out and about but also all over social media. That translates the look of them to very pedestrian to me and not aspirational or unique. Seeing these items and trends over and over again every time I log onto social media makes them feel dated so much faster than if I was just seeing them in person.

  • @wyhx82
    @wyhx82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    It’s a shame really, because things that feels outdated are trends that blew up and everyone bought at the same time. Which then gets associated with a specific time period. I’m not sure if brands can create classics anymore, whenever they promote a new product, it’ll just become another trend. I’m finding it difficult to purchase pieces I won’t find outdated because I can’t tell wether I’m buying something due to hype or if I really like it 🤣

  • @nataliebowman320
    @nataliebowman320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I just bought my first pair of Loubotin’s and am very excited! They’re very classic black heel, patent leather. This will never go out of style for me.
    I have only in the last 2 years gotten into luxury, so I know I’m behind on the trends. What is new to me is old and played out to many. In the end, however, I have to stand by what I LOVE. I am LOVING Louis Vuitton monogram even though you can spot neverfulls anywhere everywhere all day long. I LOVE the browns and golds they have, and although I know many people will look at me and think I’m “basic”, I adore my new Louis Vuitton driving shoes that match a brown pair of driving gloves I got from a small glove shop in Paris. I love the way they look. I love the way I feel in them. I love it, and I plan on adding to my tiny but growing collection of monogram items, even though I know others might judge.
    I also have a GG belt, which was my very first luxury purchase. It no longer matches my aesthetic, so I may sell it, but before I changed my hair color I wore it all the time and loved the color of it.
    I agree with other comments that say that in the end you have to decide for yourself what your style is and stand by it. Luxuriate in what you love for no one’s sake but your own.

When my kid was small, i needed big bag to accommodate baby’s needs and mine…as kid grew, my preference as to how much I carry also changed, and then I have those alone time moments where I only want to carry the essential…. So basically, my bag collection is trend-proofed 😂😂😂😂😂😂 big, small, tiny, utilitarian, backpack, cross body, clutch, prints, no prints, the older bags are “vintage” now, it’s trendy again… I’m ready for anything 🤣

    Fashion should conform to your personality and personal style. So ultimately a piece doesn’t necessarily have to be in or out of fashion because it’s what you make of it through your personal style. As for the Boston bag, that’s a classic shape and it will always be. What does make a shape like that look outdated is how it’s pulled together and the aesthetic of your Gucci bag, although lovely is indeed very 2010. I still love it and if you love it and it suits your style then who cares what anyone else thinks. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, I 100% agree that it’s not a bag you should get rid of because trends do cycle. Enjoy your content.

    Louboutin's an odd one. They became the household name for women's stilettos and there's probably nothing more iconic in women's footwear than the red bottom. Manolo never got that level of recognition, because in my opinion, the key driving forces for CL's success were the look & class factors. It stood out and it was expensive, so everyone couldn't have them. No doubt there's also sex appeal to women wearing anything red. And there's the fact that it seldom got daily wear - it was always the go-to event shoe, like when I have a perfume that I only wear for formal/business occasions (before anyone asks, "Alexandria II" by Xerjoff). So yeah, not sure how I feel about it being out of fashion.

    Hi Sophie, So many of these items I thought about purchasing when they first arrived. The LB's especially. I love the flash of red. However, just as with any LV bag or even the Gucci bags with red/green stripes, there are so many knock offs that even when you own the authentic item people wonder if it's fake and in certain venues you're treated differently because of it. May I say I have far more confidence wearing a lesser-known designer and higher quality item, or even a unique etsy piece. Louis Vuitton became almost unwearable immediately after the robbery in Union Square SF.

    I personally think that a person falls "out of love" with certain items (in this case designer goods) is because the intention of buying them at the time is to be on trend (even when dealing with the classic styles). And "not seeing them a lot" now carries that same intention when the item was initially purchased. Because it's no longer "on trend".

    Personally, I love the GG belt. I agree about CL shoes, especially the garish and stiletto styles, but I have lovely CL ankle boots and three pair of 85mm classic pumps with tiny spikes that I love. I have never been a fan of huge, over the top trends, so Murakami is not my thing. Personally, I love my small Chanel double C earrings. My Chanel jewelry is almost all vintage. I most definitely have moved towards real diamonds. I recently purchased a gorgeous diamond and ceramic Chanel ring at the RealReal for $1024 that currently retails on Chanel for $5350. Score!

    I think the Boston bag is so practical in size and shape. I also absolutely love to break out in vintage pieces - they’re actually going up in price and not easy to come by. Was thrilled to snag a black leather Gucci Boston recently. The quality is far more superior than many bags being made today. That Gucci Boston bag like the LV Speedy is timeless and takes us back to the days of the first “it bags” that brought us pure joy and attracted us to high-quality luxury pieces back when we we really got our money’s worth!

    I also have often seen through fashion history that classic items become trendy for a season, such as the hat, yet that adorable piece is a classic.
    This is when I believe we can sometimes keep those items if we particularly love them because they will come back around.
    Examples of such are hobo bags, over the knee boots, clutches, platforms, moto jackets, combat boots certain hats and basic design styles overall.

    I think the Boston bag trend is coming back - look at the popularity of the micro speedy. We’re going into large bags again and that will carry over. I’ve also noticed a lot of contemporary brands bringing out Boston bags (iirc Coach).

    Thank you Sophie. I understand why oblique is out if Dior fashion. Looking at the all the designers I can see an oblique everywhere, so I think is good for Dior to be first to be away from it. Love your videos! PS the code seem not to work but I will try later. Sending 💜

    Hey Sophie sweets. Personally I love Boston bags and your Gucci one as well as other vintage bags are definitely having a bit of a renaissance. As you know I’ve been rocking my vintage Dior Gaucho recently and had so many compliments. I think you should definitely use it, you’d rock it as you do everything. Have a great week. Trends also vary from country to country, and even within the same country. For example you say that your rockstud bag is dated, but here in Italy it's still very trendy! Chanel's costume jewelery is still very fashionable too. I also have a Gucci Boston bag, in red leather, and I use it a lot, here it's not dated. Yours is beautiful, too, but those hearts are a little "too much"! LOL
    Another past trend that comes to my mind is Juicy Couture tracksuits (but I never had one)!
    However if I like something, I wear it, I don't care if it's trendy or not.

    I haven't brought all the things I want (Some are on this list) but knowing they are coming to an end in popularity, This doesn't mean that they won't be brought anymore. I agree with where you're coming from and know that styles will change, etc. But again I think it's rich people realising that everyday people can access these pieces now, so to separate themselves from the common folk they aren't wearing as they use to. It's a bit like plastic surgery, bbls. Many rich people are going back to the natural look as a way to separate themselves.

    I still love the oblique print for Dior I hope it doesn’t disappear. I agree the Chanel earrings are done, there too expensive and there are way too many fakes about. I’m not into fashion jewellery I’ve had them and sold them a long time ago. The bottega pumps I tried them on and luckily I didn’t find them comfortable so glad I didn’t buy them. Totally agree with your picks. Again another entertaining vid 😉

    In the clubs in The States there were shoe repair shops that would paint soles of any pumps or boots red. There were a lot of obvious fakes. I think that also contributes to items going out of style. Personally, I was never drawn to the red sole. Counterfeits are also the reason I was never tempted to by LV monogram canvas. It loses something for me once the market gets flooded with good fakes.

    I never got into designer belts or shoes, as for the bags, I like the 'boxier' style of the Dior, like the one you see in pictures of Princess Diana on Pinterest, yes, the original is always best & you're always going to see the speedy going in & out of style & there will be many duplicated versions but the original will always be a classic, just look at old pictures of Audrey Hepburn with her monogram speedy. 'Tiny' bags, Coach makes a zipper card case with a chain to put your keys on, I love mine & so much of the time, especially during the spring through fall, that's all I grab then put my phone in my pocket or just hold on to it as the chain I can put around my wrist as a wristlet.

    Personally I never jumped on the Gucci or Louboutin bandwagons. I own absolutely nothing from Marmont collection and only one pair of Louboutin boots which I deem classic. I’m at a point where what I own gets worn and recycled … goes for bags and shoes. As for Chanel jewelry … haven’t bought any in the past couple of years but I wear what I have … even from seasons ago. I can’t buy new things every year - I am 57 and a lot of stuff that I would buy is not age appropriate anymore. I have a number of the CC earrings and aside from a very small percentage of people I know … no one knows or cares what season my stuff comes from. Outdated things … so be it. At lease I have some great pieces and when I do buy a new bag or piece of jewelry now … I buy classics timeless pieces. Can’t afford trendy anymore … that passion I feed with makeup.

    Interesting discussion. I agree with the CL shoes. To me they always felt like someone was trying too hard and since I never found the CL shoes classy or elegant to begin with, to see them on any outdated list is fine with me. What I do take exception with is the Dior oblique pattern. While according to your inside information Dior may start concentrating more on the Cannage pattern and less on the oblique, it does not make it 'out-of-style'. While it is not as iconic as the cannage, the oblique does serve as a classic woven pattern for Dior (is the LV pattern or Gucci pattern or Burberry pattern outdated?). In recent years there has been an injection of canvas, woven style Lady D bags with a carnage pattern or seasonal motif (such as FW2022 with its 'Winter Garden' motifs), or its popular book totes, and while I do see this material continuing to be an option, the oblique presents that classic mainstay to the brand in this category.
    I personally like the oblique in small items like a small crossbody, and I usually wear mine in the cooler months when its pattern makes a nice contrast to the monochromatic clothing I wear during those seasons. At the end of the day when all is said and done, if there is a bag that brings you joy, whether its on an outdated list or not, wear it until it stops making you smile. Even it that includes trend items. ;-)

    I think it's wise of Dior to move away from the oblique. This move can protect the pattern from being played out and going the way of red bottoms. In a way, Dior is extending the lifespan of the Dior oblique because it won't be that "one" Dior look that is everywhere. The Cannage pattern is distinctive and understated so it can/will elevate the brand. It's easier to produce classic bags in the Cannage print than the oblique.

    I never liked the Louboutin heels but that's just because they're never been my style. They remind me of girls at the club wearing the heels with the LV toiletry pouch as a clutch 😂
    Since covid I think people like more "comfy couture" 😂 I know I definitely like shorte, block heels as I've gotten older.

    There is definitely something to be said for trends, when you see them everywhere on everyone, it is tough to not get in in the action. Having said that, trends are not a must for everyone. I for one, do NOT feel comfortable in high waisted pants, nor do they look good on my figure. And I prefer a purse that is cross-body over a hand-held one, but will occasionally purchase a different style if I like it and cannot get it out of my mind over time. Thank you for sharing for thoughtful vlogs and opinions Sophie, much appreciate your videos. Be well. Hugs, Vegas 👩‍🦳❌⭕️

    Hi Sophie, another great video! I often watch you on the TV so rarely comment but wanted to say how valuable and enjoyable your videos are ❤️ I agree with so much of what you have said.
    I have the Christian Louboutin pigalles and still absolutely love mine. I think partly because it was for 10th wedding anniversary 6 years ago and brings back lovely memories each time I wear them 🥰 There is that showy element to them so I tend to wear them with a more classic outfit and I'm grateful that I went for a classic stiletto rather than the platforms.
    I agree with the marmot belt and went with the LV reversible which I'm glad I went for as it looks more classic but I do like the Marmont as I feel it looks vintage.
    I love the LV speedy and feel like it's a great on the go bag and I think the shape isn't necessarily trendy but that's why I love it more. It's a classic design that I feel has stayed classic despite the trends. There are lots of fakes but that doesn't bother me as I know mines real 😁 I think it's a lot of people's first designer bag which for me when I see them, I know that there's a story attached to it which I find so interesting, whether it's from a first job, promotion or pay rise, graduation, big birthday...
    I love the Gucci Boston bag. I do think the hearts make it less classic but nevertheless a lovely bag.
    Mini bags aren't practical so I've never invested. I have just 1 high street one.
    Have a great week ahead 💖

    I’m happy if the oblique is on the way out (sorry). Not Dior specifically, but I’m so done with the over-logo’d items - initials everywhere. Love the cannage, fine leather in a beautifully constructed pattern. Recognizable but not in your face glaring Dior from every angle. And yes to the Boston bag. Think you’re spot on with these including mini bags being replaced.

    I think end of day this is why it's SO important to just get something you love. If you love your things, you'll enjoy them regardless of trends.
    I think the tiny bags are definitely on the way out. Gen Z seems to really favor oversized, comfy styling.
    Regarding Louboutin, I personallt still love the brand but I had zero interest in seriously buying a pair of shoes until they made their diverse nudes range. I've been eyeing a pair of the nude ballet flats for years. That's my go-to style or a kitten heel. Can't do large heels unless it's a wedge at all.
    I do hope the boston bag comes back around. I love those things a lot!😂

    Ok, so I’m a personal stylist and try not to comment unless I just HAVE to. 😂 Chanel earrings are not dated at all. In fact, Chanel earrings are the #1 selling product of Chanel. Now red bottoms, I would say you see less of them nowadays, but the “So Kate” Red Bottoms are classic. I see them all over corporate bldgs when I take clothes to clients. It’s absolute blasphemy to even think the LV Speedy is dated! It’s the “face” of the LV brand!! The Speedy is what helped make LV the luxury brand it is today. When you say LV, the Speedy instantly comes to mind for many ppl. The Gucci marmot belt is just a belt. I don’t see how a belt can be considered dated. It’s just a leather belt with the Gucci GG emblem on it. Matter of fact, 95% of all designer belts are just a leather strap with their metal emblem. So I’m not understanding how a belt can be dated. If Gucci’s Marmont belt is dated, then all designer belts on that same style are dated. Anyway, I think I’ve weighed in enough. Just giving my opinion. Hope everyone has a nice Sunday!
