Resident Evil Village gets pretty much everything wrong about the Resident Evil formulas, whether they be survival horror or schlocky action.

The writing for Chris is horrific. The fact that they address it in the game by having one of his comrades call him out ("that he should've told Ethan") makes it a 1000 times worse.

Totally 👍👍 it just sucked to watch him swap dialogue.......or fail to, even when it would substantially reduce Ethan's understandable distress 😞
Sometimes I feel that the more inflated the franchise is, the more the emphasis lands on cutscenes - which usually contain writing you 'might' be able to get away with in a short cutscene....but the longer the exchanges go on for, the more waitwhowhatthef@ck ?! moments occur. Or it's a Cringe Festival.
More than once I wondered if Chris had hit his head during the gaps in separate RE's. Then there's that mass he put on really fast, he stopped punching boulders - he makes the boulders fight each other 🙃

RE4 hides its linearity with a sense of adventure. You don’t feel like you’re going through levels of a game, you feel like you are going on a wild rollercoaster ride and the Village and Castle are the backdrop. The Island is where the linearity starts to show more, but there’s enough action that you probably don’t care.
RE Village doesn’t have a sense of adventure, since it goes more quiet and suspenseful route compared to RE4 but the suspenseful route works more with a choice based open-world which unfortunately it doesn’t have.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

RE4's action and level design are also just a lot better. RE Village just has too many flaws. They could've hid treasures in many places with the shinies, but nope... there's not a whole lot of them hidden. The game has stretches where you go without encountering a new shiny spot to shoot for hours (assuming your first time through). And there's barely any weapon upgrades to find in Village, most of the extra stuff you do results in treasure you can sell. Upgrading weapons at the shop also isn't spaced out properly. You go through like half of the game without being able to upgrade any of your weapons to a new level.
Those are just a few flaws, but... the game has A LOT of issues. Still a decent game overal, but both RE7 and RE8 are at the bottom of the mainline games for me. And I played through them in the best way possible, all in VR.

The biggest mistake when it comes to RE Village for me is that they showed castle and there was so much hype around it and Lady D, so I was quite annoyed when I saw they basically just full autoed castle part and move u to some other shitty places. Castle should've been last place u can unlock and explore. With how big the thing is, they could've made so many paths and hidden places for u to explore and put Megamycete under the castle in some secret place, just how FromSof placed Old Chaos under the castle of Eleum Loyce behind throne in Dark Souls 2. Make castle mean something and make the grandios reveal of the women who was a huge influence in the grand scheme of RE universe.

And that aside, the entire game was just 💩 💩 💩 Unfortunately, just because Capcom have been churning out successful remakes, it doesn’t mean canon sequels will be good (as they continually demonstrate). Can I just say how nonsensical the layout of the Dimitrescu Castle is? The main entrance is through a side door a couple of rooms away from the "main hall"; the foyer, which should be the main entrance, actually leads to the chapel where you fight Lady D. It's like you entered the Spencer Mansion through the guest house, then the main hall led to the lab.

the Vampire woman was so non-threatening. Too many rooms she cannot enter and then she has no gap-closing move, so you can evade her so easily. She should have been able to extend out her nails to stab you from across the room, or she should have been able to magically shut doors that you are trying to enter and then you have to do a quicktime to force them open, in which time she can reach you and kill you... anything. For 90% of players it was still hard enough. Because only the 10% of gamers are good and it was easy for them since they avoided attacks without fear. The majority is not that good and had a hard time even on easier difficulties. I think It's reasonable to make a game this way because the bad majority needs to be able to complete the game without dying every minute and for the real gamers it is still a challange on VOS difficulty. Criticism is needed here but the difficulty is always a non pleasing topic. Hard games for the majority will usually be easy for a small portion of good gamers. You need safe rooms for those who aren't extremely good with movement and mechanics. I seen a lot of very good players die over and over on VOS difficulty

I'm not going to hold any punches with what I'm about to say... marketing Lady Dimitrescu as a main character and major villain in trailer/gameplay, then killing her off in the beginning of the game was a grimy, pathetic, manipulation tactic. It worked splendidly for the Capcom though since everybody lost their minds over the very tall, busty, curvy, thick vampire mutant woman. She damn near broke the internet. The voice actress did a phenomenal job. Lady Dimitrescu might not of been the primary antagonist and final boss, but having a satisfying experience getting to understand her character and personality would have made her legendary, especially if we got to fight her five times like they did with Jack Backer back in Resident Evil 7. Every time you face off against her, she becomes more and more aggressive, her fighting style and powers become harder to deal with as she's slowly mutating into something worse. "Nope forget that lets use her to sell our shitty little sequel because sex sells, who doesn't love some big-ass titties and a fat ass, am I right boys?" Piss off...

Wasn't even marketed that way in the beginning. It was the people who jumped to conclusions that she had a bigger role and going tall vampire milf. It's not just the fact that after being brainlessly railroaded throughout the game , the Factory suddenly remembers that Resident Evil games have exploration and puzzles , it's also the fact that it's comparatively long to the other parts of the game . They overhyped the Castle part which turns out to be rather short , the Villa and the Lake/Basin are virtually inconsequential , and then you're stuck in a massive Factory that looks like a dev's steam/dieselpunk wet dream , which turns out to be the largest portion of the game , with the hope that you might be able to make an actual choice in the game and side with Transformers Magneto , but no .

A girl who can bring dolls to life and a merchant that obviously can’t fit through a normal doorway but still magically teleports wherever you happen to be? Plus stylistically each level feels like it could’ve been it’s own game and kind of feels like they crammed a bunch of separate ideas together and hoped it would work. My biggest problem with Village wasn't that it was necessarily awful or anything like that, it just plays way to similar RE4. Even the areas are same-ish with the village, lake-swamp area, castle, abandoned military industrial complex. It felt more like an update than a new game, and then playing the RE4 remake kinda just brought it all up again.
I also didn't appreciate that while aside from the boss fights in RE7 (which are over the top cheesy aside from the Mom), RE7 felt much more like a return to the original series of being closer to the OG games and then they just went full RE4, RE5, RE6 mode for RE8.

Which is why I compare RE8 to RE4 and RE7 to the original RE games. It is much more similar to the older games than the new ones, except its in first person. RE8 plays much more like RE4-6. It clearly abandons horror for action, it's easy, there is very little item management, and what little there is focuses more on managing cool weapons over anything else.
I don't think it is absolute dog shit, but it feels just a tad bit too different from RE7. RE3 og vs RE1 and RE2 felt more logical a progression from less horror to more action than RE8 does to 7 or RE4 does to the previous games.

I loved Resident Evil in the 90s because it reminded me of Super Metroid, System Shock, Hexen, and Myst all rolled into these askew camera angles that were all cinematic and claustrophobic at the same time. God it was such a masterpiece that first game. I never much cared for the extra anxiety of Nemesis, but still pushed through it even in the third game, core of the series was still solid and unchanged, only refined. Then RE4 happened, and I was one of the people that didnt care for it when it came out. I still haven't played more than an hour or two of it. The color scheme an arcade feel just rubbed me the wrong way. It reminded me of House of The Dead for some reason lol. Code Veronica was my Resident Evil 4, and it remains one of my all time favorites that made me a proud Dreamcast owner on it's release date. I never loved the action packed RE games and only played them as something to burn through in co-op for shits and giggles - until RE2 remake, I bought it and really enjoyed it. It had me frantic and yelping in one moment and cursing my own stupidity in another - it was resident evil lol! That made me go back and try RE7, which I thought was pretty neat. The vibes were pretty gag inducing most the time, which was definitely a choice, but the game itself was still good. Thankfully, gameplay was pretty spot on compared to the OG series I fell in love with as a teenager in the late 90s, which I found refreshing for a new entry. I hate the hide & seek segments tho... It seems like every game has a hard time hitting the sweet spot between feeling helpless and feeling overpowered. Even the RE3 remake was odd, leaving me feeling overpowered in a game that I was worried they were going to turn into a hiding in closets and lockers simulator.

    • @michaelangel25

I didn’t pick up RE4 until about 4 years after release because I was done with the series beforehand. Nothing could recapture the brilliance of the original. Out of boredom one day, and because 4 was dirt cheap to buy, I bought it, but still not expecting much. I wasn’t overly stoked by the village level tbh… it was good but felt too different, I almost stopped playing (like you did). However, I decided to continue, and my oh my… glad I did because the game just got better and better and better. When I got to the castle it was especially a treat because it redelivered that haunted house feel of the original but so much better it eclipsed RE1 to the point where I forgot it was one of the best games I’ve ever played. I played 4 remake but couldn’t be bothered finishing it because the castle redesign felt disappointing to me. But hey, I know we have our own opinions but you really did miss out on an absolute masterpiece of a game. I might replay the HD project version of it.

As a Hardcore/hardest difficulty gamer in games like RE, Dead space, Callisto Protocol, etc it's important to mention that its impossible to balance survival element with inventory management. If you're playing on harder setting you wont have inventory space issues due to scarcer resources and more of that resource usage due to stronger enemies. However, playing it on easier difficulties strips away the survival element as you can just unload mindlessly with no challenge as i believe it's not a good survival horror experience if you're dying in game very little

I think unless you're playing on highest difficulty, a horror game should rarely kill you, unless you mess up or it's a boss. You need to be able to scrape by, barely holding on to your last hitpoints to feel the tension. If the game wastes your time by sending you back to your last save all the time, it gets annoying, and if the auto-checkpoint just restarts the room, death becomes meaningless. You can just try again.

The main reason big companies feel afraid to spread out key items is because normies are too focused on instant gratification and will leave a bad review if they can't mindlessly blitz through a mediocre story.
It's a problem that only exists because of how game companies treat its customers.
If the first level in the game was the Foundry, with the MC uttering small hints like "maybe I should check the foundry again" then it'd serve as an amazing tutorial for what you're in for.

Especially in RE games since they have Always encouraged replaying the game with different options and they grade you on your speed and saves (and nothing else, as of late.) For example, I re-played RE2R about 11 times to get S+ in each campaign, and developed the fastest route I could at my skill level.
