Back in 2007 when I started playing (f2p) I was scared to leave Lumbridge, for some reason I thought that the further you go from the castle the more in danger you will be, so my money making methods were gather all sorts of resources around the Lummy castle and then sell them to the general store for a few coins. Back then general stores were very popularly used as a way to buy/sell things. I remember making my first few thousand gold and then camping the store for some random items, stuff like mithril gear and above would hit the general store and instantly be bought by someone, I remember buying my first set of armor that way. I quit the game sooner after and only came back close to half a year later when Godwars came out. That's around when TH-cam montages/videos started to get some traction on TH-cam, and sooner after I started following some TH-camrs, the first few money making video methods started showing up, I couldn't do them, so I kept on grinding, but this time I got to know about Falador and Varrock (still in f2p). I remember quitting sooner after again only to come back in 2009 with trade restrictions up. It was a different game now, but it was during trade limit that I learned you could do stuff like turning ores into bars for money, that's how I made my first 100k, I still have pictures to this date of my first few thousand steel bars sold for a tiny bit of profit, the whole game had opened for me. I could now hunt for that 2.5mil guthix set or maybe one day the 5mil Saradomin or Zamorak set. The grinding mindset got to me, it only took me finding a way to make some good coin for Runescape to make more sense to me, sooner after by the end of 2009 I was rocking my full Guthix but already putting my eyes on this item ~20m item called "Blue H'ween Mask" instead of the Zamorak Armor set I wanted at first, and one day I got hacked and cleaned for like 10mil and spent the next day buying harpoons to sell on the GE for profit to help me make my first 1mil back. I kept on playing on and off, only after Free Trade in 2010 I played in P2p for the first time, I finally had convinced my parents to lend me 10€ to buy a membership card, I was already base 75 combat with 35 Ranged but 55+ magic and some very decent skilling stats 70+. It was funny because I had put my eyes on all these member items I wanted at some point, and the day I paid my membership I was so rich from f2p that I could buy some of them, like day 1 Fury, D boots, Whip and Verac's Skirt. From there on it's history, I just learned to play the game and maxed all sorts of accounts as I got to learn more and more, both RS2 and later in 2013 also OSRS. I kind of went off topic at some points, but the beauty of Runescape has been kind of what I wrote above. Back in the days, way more people played the game as a "first timer", those people got to know about the game from way different sources than nowadays. A TH-cam search back then would show almost nothing "Guide" wise, hell nobody would even attempt to search that to begin with, and older websites gave really rough and unoptimized text based guides on things, which younger me couldn't even read to begin with (I was still a beginner in English Language), so we just had to improvise and do a lot of trial and error and research to find out how the game works. Nowadays it's very different, you are always 1 click away from being hand fed every little thing that there is to know about the game. If any game mode comes out, there's enough of a database to make the Top 10k of every leaderboard a challenge to even attempt to achieve. We as a community simply had way to much time and tools in our disposition to maximize every bit of gameplay there is to know. (You can go back to 2008 Pking montages to realize people weren't using Gmaul the same way people do these days; no such thing as 3 kinds of tick eating food, people would sometimes even lose ticks while potting up; the list goes on and on). It's kind of nice to go back sometimes and remember all of these things, even as far back as 2013 when people said "it won't be the same, OSRS will never be 2007", but then 8 years in advance we remember 2013 as a whole different game way more difficult and challenging, but even in 2013 times were different, the Wiki has evolved, we now have TH-camrs/Twitch Streamers whose job is literally playing the game, layers on top of layers. There's no going back, and the most we can do at this point in time in 2021 is trying to create account locked accounts and even Jagex themselves coming up with Restricted Game Modes (Group ironman), to kind of give us a taste on how good the old days were.

Multi logging wasn't allowed for a couple reasons. The old rules said you weren't allowed to interact with other accounts of your own or something to that nature. It also didnt allow you to log in on more than one account at a time per IP, but you were able to get around that if you click login on both as quick as you could.

05:50 as a player that started playing rs in 2007 i can say this was the best time ever! you would talk for hourse and just chill run to the bank run back talk even more.. People giving you music to look up and then you could talk about that aswell, or trow 99 party's and stuff like that now as a 25y old. Knowing runscape was a escape for me and this kind of video's bring back so much good memories! I only havve one buddy still playing osrs. Good times!
Loved this upload man. This video was filled with so much nostalgia. I do wish that gathering skills were more social like they used to be. It made me the skiller I am today expect now its all about xp.
Seeing the people trading with all the text changes really started to jog the memory. I remember people asking and others holding the secret on how to red wave the text or something
Nostalgia is more about your age rather than what the videogame was at the time. We all miss trading in Varrock west bank because it reminds us from when we were young, but it's more the memory of it rather than actually standing there for 30 minutes trying to buy a rune scimmy but ending up being scammed for a noted iron scimmy.
I got 99 fishing in 2008 because I was in college and had lots of work and could play RS and still study. People were so much more talkative, you could ask people what levels, what are they doing later. People would show off their fashionscape. Just a different time lol
Remember back in the day in restricted areas "open the door so I can run through" or when you couldn't trade an item "drop it and i'll pick it up" lololol
I've drop traded a good few times across accounts. I remember one time I caught someone trying to drop trade full Sara Rune and managed to get the Legs and Kite for myself. Increased my bank value quite a lot.
The whole thing involving drop trading used to be insane around 2005-2007. Was a whole community of people hunting drop trades. I spent a good amount of time looting these, typically around lumbridge castle area, people line up their accounts etc, and it was a whole other game trying to add "white dots" logging out from the minimap, in the event they hopped worlds, so you could find them. Sometimes there'd be a stack of 10 or more looter alts which all logged in at the same time to try and loot someone's drop trade. Pretty hilarious. You'd basically have a bunch of accounts scattered about where you could really quickly log out/log into them in common drop trade spots (often logging in underneath them lol).
Loved your video and the humor you snuck in it. Been playing Runescape for nearly 20 years and can say I loved these old clips and the old methods of how we used to play. Great memories. I remember my cousin completing Monkey Madness in 2005 without a guide and worshiping him because he had a red sword :P
i miss hanging out with all the cool kids on f2p worlds that would sit outside the front of the varrock castle with all their mems items or trimmed armor
@Jerem0y it was like a more social version of bankstanding, just some chads in fashionscape chatting with the noobs who happened to actually make it to varrock
I use to love Catherby fishing back in the day it was the equivalent to wintertodt with less toxicity same as old bh where everyone would sit near ditch gathering ep those were the good days.
Resource gathering has never really been a viable way to make money. The innocence of making 2m by selling your magic logs after a couple weeks of chopping seemed like insane money back then. You could make 2m doing that now, in way less time, but we’ve grown up and realised it’s an inefficient way of making money. Most of the player base are adults now and have the know how to master ToA or ToB; the equivalent back then was Barrows, KQ, or GWD which maybe 5% of the younger player base could do consistently. Everyone back then knew how to chop a tree or click a fishing spot. That’s the difference really.
Woah, blast to the past! At 8:35 you can see Dudefish 15, a friend of MaxBoison's, talking in chat. He made Runescape videos back in the day. God I miss that era.
Same. I tried to jump back into FPS with a friend a while back. We used to consistently smash public lobbies in CoD and Battlefield back in the day during the CoD4 to Black Ops 1 era. We picked up Battlefield V, and we got absolutely destroyed and trash talked by some 14 year old streamer on the other team. It was a real 'fuck, I'm old' moment.
@ 11:00 I think the reason for drop-trading being so prevalent was less due to fear of multi-logging and more so simply due to it being the early 2000s. Internet cafes were still a thing and most households only had 1 computer, assuming they had 1 at all. You didn't have a laptop, second PC, phone, tablet, etc to log-in on a second account and trade yourself.
Unfortunately very few people would find pure castle wars fun and most of the community base would just end up farming it for xp by not actually playing if it was worth the xp, otherwise the minigame would still be dead
I remember as a kid playing back in '07-08 I used to run a runecrafting 'airbus' between east fally bank and the air altar for people to follow, or sometimes between the varrock bank and the essence mines in the f2p runecrafting world, and a couple dozen people would always hop on board and be spamming 'choo choo' with every conceivable effect or just chatting. Got to almost 70 rc in f2p just crafting air runes. good times, haha
multi logging actually did have enforcement in the form of telling you that you already had an account logged into that world, thats why he felt the need to drop trade, but if you logged in the accounts at the same time you could get them both on the same world
Back in the day youtube had an option to add a background song when uploading and there was only a selection of like 15 songs they had a license for and it was the songs you always hear on vids back then
In terms of drop trading to another account; I lost player mod in 2006 because I drop traded to another account. I have never met anyone else who got punished for drop trading.
Thanks to you i just picked up the new one, and even in this new changed one decade later, i can see the appeal. I wish i'd been back then with guys. During that era i was in vanilla WOW and everquest
This video is honestly awesome though, this really is the RS I miss. OS is a fake knock off :( but amazing vid, I bet we crossed paths back in the day!
Ironically, the whole skilling for GP is something you still see happening in RS3 albeit uncommon, so it's nice either fishing or mining and having fun conversations for people.
The only thing I know about the card game is that they used the same art in some advertisements for RuneScape. The one that sticks out is the one of Kreearra with his wings spread screaming at the camera. I have no idea what any others are lol
I used to pm all my friends "hi" when I logged in and would do that for like 20 minutes and talk to them before logging in, until they stopped responding.
Love these types of videos.. I can relate to the reflexes at castle wars lmao things are insaneee these days.. also enjoy anything RSC based too =) RSCVanilla is always around if you feel like getting another dose of that sweet nostalgia ~~
:O I actually used to play with varinathras (: He's in the castle war clip lmao... ahh memories, 1 day he was playing, the next he never came back lmao. I'm still lowkey salty over no stealing creations btw.
How I relate to these old school rs vids. Spending hours using my Rune Hally on Black Demons under edge getting rune med and chain drops. Made absolute bank going to canafis, buying all the coloured clothing and selling the sets 10kea in my bank sale. Making good friends at cammy fishing spot. I was a massive drop trader to all my pure accounts when my irl friend wasn't online. I still remember the most bizarre experience, drop trading in lummy swamp when someone logged in next to me, did the panic emote a few times and had tick on all my pure gear! My heart was pounding out my chest haha I still can't explain it to this day, I would use all kinds of spots to drop trade but this guy just somehow soul read me.
Just a quick tidbit about those overplayed songs from early RS videos, there's a good reason those songs were overplayed. TH-cam had a list of songs it provided to users at that time that you could throw over any video, those overplayed songs were what youtube offered to you.
with multilogging if you opened up two internet windows the game client literally wouldnt let you log in to the other account because it would say someone from the same IP is already logged in
Damn I miss fight pits I loved going there I would wear full veracs cause everybody always prayed melee and dh in invy then I unlocked ancients and then really had fun
Might not be enough for it's own video but talk about how loading transitions between areas actually took upwards of 10 seconds back in the early 2000's.
TH-cam is notorious for copyright as I’m sure you know. They used to have a set list of approved tracks, most were shit, the ones you mentioned were about the only decent ones, hence their over use.
Man i remember fishing the whole day at karamja island (f2p) or chopping all day at the grand exchange :D This have been the days maaaaan nostalgia is reeeal
i actually was safe spotting Ogress warriors a month or so ago with d halberd an i had multiple people pass by me confused as shit as to what the weapon was an why i could hit npc form 2 spot away but still do melee damage
6:15 is so relatable, I remember thinking I had a massive schlong with my torag/dfs and whip being a giga tank taking 0 damage and putting no effort in but now these days by the time I use a healing item, swap to the prayers and activate protect from magic, the mage I was fighting had teleported 30 metres to me, swapped to a set of full melee dps gear and d'claw speced me into the fuckin shadow realm
I quit playing originally before the grand exchange was a thing, so when I started playing old school about a year ago I had never heard of it. For the first couple weeks probably I basically played as an iron man on a normal account and would stand in banks trying to buy and sell things and no one would respond, so I was just like wth how do I get things? So I sold everything to the general store for dirt cheap. I really wish I had been recording footage from the beginning because it was just a hilariously dunce couple weeks 😭
Drop parties, bank sales, castle wars such good times. I haven’t played RuneScape since 2010-2011. I hear osrs is fun and I’d like to give it a try, but times and people/internet has changed so it’ll never be the same, maybe I will one day.
Working for someone for gp. I remember working all day one day for some guy I got like 20,000 feathers and got 50k and bought a rune plate body. Then my “boss” said trade me it he’ll try to fix it and then I’m sure you can imagine the rest lol
Another reason why people drop traded was because their computers couldn't run two web pages with the game at once. Also, another thing people don't do anymore is hang out in friend groups at lumbridge castle and varrock castle benches on world 3.
I really miss the good ol' days... My buddy and I ran a big castle wars clan on w24 back in i wanna say... 09? I made so many friends and had such incredible memories..

I use to log into 3 accounts in the time
i remember a while back some dude was crashing me at bloodvelds in the slayer tower but he missclicked and went into the room with the Aberrant spectre and he didnt have a nosepeg and got dropped i proceeded to loot his karils top and his fury lol
I remember a bug with the original castlewars where you could leave the waiting room as a sheep and walk around the map like that. =D
Good times!
How about the nostalgia of being able to visit the grand exchange without seeing multiple bots running bets. Boy those were some quiet days.
Only go to the GE on total worlds solely to avoid bots
There was no GE back in my day it was world 2 falador park. Refreshing over and over to get into the server cuz it was always full
Loved this upload man. This video was filled with so much nostalgia. I do wish that gathering skills were more social like they used to be. It made me the skiller I am today expect now its all about xp.
The social element really makes it.. used to wc magics in seers all the time with my gang lol
@@rs_cruze hell yeah! I used to go on “mining expeditions” with a group of friends. Just conga line to varrock mine and back to the bank. Good times
Constant revolving door of these 3 songs.
That had me laughing so hard, so true to.
LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR
I've drop traded a good few times across accounts. I remember one time I caught someone trying to drop trade full Sara Rune and managed to get the Legs and Kite for myself. Increased my bank value quite a lot.
XD savage
Don't boast. I hated ppl like u
Bank sales were the shit I remember being able to get shit half off
I used to hate getting crop-dusting at Castle Wars
"Drop a barricade, do a 360 in the air and cropdust you in the face, and then are down the stairs and halfway across the freakin' map." Gold
Man this bring back memories, castle wars was lit back in the day
The whole thing involving drop trading used to be insane around 2005-2007.
Hilariously, the music thing resonates with me so much. 30 seconds to mars - the kill, was also one of the songs pretty much on loop lmao
@Jerem0y it was like a more social version of bankstanding, just some chads in fashionscape chatting with the noobs who happened to actually make it to varrock
hey runescape historian, i watch your videos at lunch when i'm at work. they are the perfect length and all the little fun facts are great.
I used to go pking with my clan in f2p, full rune, for hours. Pretty neat.
That thumbnail is one of the most nostalgic things I've ever seen.
Love your channel, your videos have so much charm. So much old runescape content I completely forgot about.
Woah, blast to the past! At 8:35 you can see Dudefish 15, a friend of MaxBoison's, talking in chat. He made Runescape videos back in the day. God I miss that era.
Axe heads falling off, tree spirits attacking you along with Dr Hyde, when people would sell magic logs just to scam you real fast with willow logs.
6:20 man I felt this, my reflexes aren't what they used to be. Especially on fps games
I remember chilling in varry square for hours against the castle walls before you walk the path toward the castle
I remember trying to crumble the walls on players downstairs in castle wars. Good times
I really want them to bring castle wars back some how on RS3.
Maybe if it gave you like XP lamps or something crazy for doing good in castle wars.
Dude thank you for making this. I was thinking about this stuff like last week.
Dude you are totally the Nickstrengthandpower of Runescape. I love it
multi logging actually did have enforcement in the form of telling you that you already had an account logged into that world, thats why he felt the need to drop trade, but if you logged in the accounts at the same time you could get them both on the same world
Back in the day youtube had an option to add a background song when uploading and there was only a selection of like 15 songs they had a license for and it was the songs you always hear on vids back then
In terms of drop trading to another account; I lost player mod in 2006 because I drop traded to another account. I have never met anyone else who got punished for drop trading.
Thanks to you i just picked up the new one, and even in this new changed one decade later, i can see the appeal. I wish i'd been back then with guys. During that era i was in vanilla WOW and everquest
Our boi back with the QUALITY content
It's so funny cause I came back to osrs 1 week ago and I do use the Dragon Hally to safespot, mostly when I'm using my phone
I used to safe spot Moss Giants north of Ardy with a rune halberd. There were always other people there hanging out and training too. Good times.
Jeep this up! I think a slight boost in your energy output would create more engaging content
Just come across this channel best thing I’ve found, for someone who has played since 04/05
Bro once again I love your vids!!! I recommend making a video on the prayer curses like Turmoil and how it impacted Pking/PVM.
This video is honestly awesome though, this really is the RS I miss. OS is a fake knock off :( but amazing vid, I bet we crossed paths back in the day!
Rs3 is way closer to this than osrs
Love these videos man, can’t wait for the pack to come in! Subbed.
Oh man memories, subbed. Love these memories
Great vid man you earned yourself a subscriber
Killing hellhounds with a dragon hally... Killing lessers in Crandor... man. What a trip back.
Remember when someone would log on and see you in a spot and then world hop instead of setting a cannon and pulling from all targets
You forgot about house parties. When people actually hanged out at someone's house. Instead people just use it for transportation and gilded altar
I remember getting a boxing ring was a goal for a lot of people. People wanted a fun filled house to show off with plenty of activities
i love your videos so much, everytime you release a new vid im straight onto it. keep up the awesome content :D
I have yet to meet anyone who knew how the hell trouble brewing actually worked or even enjoyed it
:O I actually used to play with varinathras (:
He's in the castle war clip lmao...
ahh memories, 1 day he was playing, the next he never came back lmao.
Oh god this brings me back. I forgot about alot of this!
This video alone gave me more nostalgia than osrs has
Man I remember a time when only 3(I think?) people could play on the same ip at a time and nobody could be in the same world.
Just a quick tidbit about those overplayed songs from early RS videos, there's a good reason those songs were overplayed. TH-cam had a list of songs it provided to users at that time that you could throw over any video, those overplayed songs were what youtube offered to you.
with multilogging if you opened up two internet windows the game client literally wouldnt let you log in to the other account because it would say someone from the same IP is already logged in
6:51 Iloveicp is still alive today, wow what a legend
7:13 sorder22, kaeji
7:17 please smile, og player till today
We're about the same age, I'm 25, so this was basically a trip down memory lane
Damn I miss fight pits I loved going there I would wear full veracs cause everybody always prayed melee and dh in invy then I unlocked ancients and then really had fun
Enjoying your videos keep up the good work!
Man i remember fishing the whole day at karamja island (f2p) or chopping all day at the grand exchange :D
This have been the days maaaaan nostalgia is reeeal
The only point I'd add is that you can no longer see items if you weren't logged in when they were dropped, so drop trading is now impossible.
i actually was safe spotting Ogress warriors a month or so ago with d halberd an i had multiple people pass by me confused as shit as to what the weapon was an why i could hit npc form 2 spot away but still do melee damage
I remember when the GE got added, its all foggy but i can definitely remember the day it was added, huge change to the game
I really wish I had been recording footage from the beginning because it was just a hilariously dunce couple weeks 😭
remember house parties ? How everyone would actually enjoy the homes rather than pray spam bones
He trimmed it and gave it back 🤣
Another reason why people drop traded was because their computers couldn't run two web pages with the game at once.
Drop trading was very big for me in early days of RuneScape
