    Can we just give recognition to the original creators of BTAS, for creating a children's cartoon show, whose success relied on the show's toyline as much as its ratings, that presented these incredibly deep and nuanced themes to kids. They never talked down to you at 6, and they created something I would enjoy multiple times as I grew up. I learned something new with each viewing at different stages of life.

      X-Men TAS, had the same task, yet they slipped on some serious stuff. The episode about the origin of Mr Sinister, is really not for kids. I actually think the success of Batman & Superman TAS, along with X-Men and Spider-Man TAS, was that many young adults were watching too. When the with their kids, or on their own. The expensive toys were being bought by adult collectors, starting in the 90’s, with McFarlane’s Spawn stuff, then other companies realizing they could make collectibles, instead of “toys.”
      I was a 14 or 15 year old, who slowly got my friends into what they thought were just cartoons for kids.

      It may not be ideal in the short term, but in the long run it shines the gold, the success to any Movie or TV show is when you treat children like adults, and not dumb down the content for them. Sure they may not fully understand the messages and nuance, but they can feel it, and once they grow up, that feeling combined with the full understanding of the context creates magic

    A line from OSP Red always comes up in my mind. "Can you imagine your Batman comforting a scared child? If yes, congratulations, this is a certified Batman! If not, I'm afraid you instead have the Punisher in a silly hat." I think, to an extent, DCAU Bruce Wayne forgets at least part of what made Batman important. Or, perhaps, doesn't want to show it. Batman is compassion. Part of compassion, however, is healing. Healing requires connection to others.

      Batman exists as a promise that no child would ever experience the same tragedy that Bruce Wayne did that night in crime alley. At his core batman is an extremely empathetic character because of that defining promise. And I really hate it when people act like he's some emotionless whacko

  • @LordTyph
    @LordTyph ปีที่แล้ว +140

    I'd like to say that the portrayal of Bruce not caring about everyone was NOT his actual feelings. Terry was projecting what he thought 'Batman' would say after finding out... certain things (his quitting the Justice League partnership stuff and breaking up with Dana were similar events as he still remains a part-timer by the end and has decided to propose to Dana). The reality is that, while he puts on a cold front, in reality, he cares deep down. He's willing to visit Tim Drake in the hospital after Return of the Joker. He goes out of his way to make soup for Terry in Epilogue and tries to look after his health. Age and failure has worn it down but his empathy is still there, something that is a core part of him as Amanda Waller notes.
    Hell, in that same episode, a story is told about how Bruce stopped a reality warper about to die and take half the city with her... by simply staying by her side until she passed away, refusing to take her life.
    He DOES care, it's just that as time goes on, he becomes more and more closed off and it becomes harder for it to be visible.

    Episodes like this one were incredibly important to the mythos of Batman. In a way, Jim Gordon was his father figure, albeit very indirectly. I think another DCAU moment that can be linked to this episode about doubting himself is Phatom Mask, the movie, as it's all about Bruce trying and wanting to move one, leave the mission behind but he can't and a part of him doesn't want to.

    Great video as usual. But I have to correct you on one major point. In Epilogue, all of the conversations that happen in black and white aren’t canon. They never actually happen. They’re what Terry imagines will happen if he confront Bruce and Dana. That’s why Dana and Bruce act as if things are perfectly normal between them. So 100 year old Bruce never actually speaks that callously about his old partners. Terry just assumes the worst. Dwayne McDuffie has confirmed this.

      I kinda feel the same way, but when you stop to look at the big picture it's not that batman is becoming less empathic, it's that his dedication to the cause is so great that he slowly learns that closeness with other people will only end up causing them pain when Bruce risks his life again and again. He would sacrifice everything to keep the ones he loves safe, even if he has to sacrifice his relationship with them.

    I've always liked the idea of Bruce veering into blind zealotry if he's not careful. Maybe not the way *Season 4* onwards did it, though "Cold Bruce" presented a very interesting contrast to the warmer, regular Bruce. One that I love when it's applied to *Ra's Al-Ghul,* 'cos I think he best embodies the twisted reflection of _the Mission_ that Bruce has dedicated himself to. I feel _Arkham City_ did that well, but there's more to dig through.
    Aside from the core difference between Bruce and Ra's mindsets, i.e. "help everybody" vs "kill everybody", I think what would make for a good story is highlighting their individual senses of _trust._
    Ra's doesn't trust anyone to carry on his work exactly as he desires it to proceed, which ironically - through his use of the Lazarus Pit - causes it to become more corrupted; whereas Bruce knows that even if he dies, good people will follow him and continue to fight the good fight. Also compare Ra's cult/army of expendable pawns who worship and fear him versus Bruce bonding with a surrogate family that loves him and calls him out when he's in the wrong. It's such a rich vein of storytelling and I love to see it tapped into.
    I thoroughly support what you're laying down here (and in your other videos, for that matter), 'cos you really emphasise just how compelling these stories are and why we adore these characters. Consider me subbed. 😁

    I've recently been watching Batman the Animated Series after having only seen a few episodes here and there. Most of my understanding of Batman as a character can from his appearance in the two Justice League shows, so I was used to his more callous, but ultimately compassionate, self. Seeing how he is in the first series of the animated series, I was surprised to see how jovial he was by comparison. He started out serious, but show much more outward kindness and compassion.
    He's an interesting case of the tragic hero, his quest to avenge the loss of his family eventually depriving him of all the family he made along the way. Even more tragic is the fact that it was all avoidable.
    Something I was happy to see in the new Batman film was that Batman resolved to be more than just a symbol of fear, more than a boogeyman to scare people straight. He learned he had to be there to provide hope, to uplift the good in Gotham and not just beat down the bad.

Yes, the mission did require him to be able to be strong enough to continue it but I really wish he could’ve done with Terry had the opportunity to do. It does not excuse the bad things he did as well like getting Barbara pregnant and failing Tim and Dick Grayson, but at the same time we will never forget this character either because it is the best version of Batman. The reason batman feels so much like a loaner and impersonable figure in most later series compared to batman in TAS is simple. In most series Bruce Wayne is a mask, in TAS Bruce Wayne is Batman. In TAS the two cannot be seperated, elements of Bruce bleed into how he acts as batman and viceversa. In other series they feel entirely seperate to the point where Bruce Wayne is almost irrelevant to those series, only batman matters.

    As amazing Batman is, he's only a human. There's only so much he can do. That's precisely why he had to be something bigger than one man -- a symbol.

    I find bruce wayne to be just as important as batman. many will say that batman is the real identity and bruce is just a persona but for me that couldnt be further from the truth. Bruce is an important aspect he may not be the stoic hero that inflicts fear on others neither is he a symbol of hope, justice and redemption. He is a man a scared man that still lives in fear and guilt for his parents death. Bruce is more emotional than batman he is the side of batman that is capable of love and is still a scared person deep inside him. I'm not saying that "batman" isnt capable of compassion or love far from it, but bruce is an important aspect regarding his identity

    The journey from the empathetic, human hero Batman began as and the lonely, bitter obsessive he ended as is painfully tragic. I wish my favourite Batman could have found a happier ending - but what is Batman without deep sadness?

    This is quite possibly my favorite episode of the entire series. This is where Bruce feels the most Batman and least BatGod.

  • @darwinaguilero3175
    @darwinaguilero3175 ปีที่แล้ว

    It’s sad. Bruce ended up alone in that damn cave. Nobody was around anymore. Or wanted to be around him. He only had the mission, and eventually he couldn’t continue it and was made the intel man. I can’t get over it.

    I love these videos, but is there any chance we may see Batman Brave & The Bold on this channel. I think it is as good as the Batman TAS, just different. Would love to see this channel’s take on the Brighter Knight.

    so happy you're making these videos now, after i just finished watching the DCAU shows for the first time. it's helping me process all the feelings i have (and none of my friends have watched the show as adults so i have no one to discuss it with).

  • @noahhelsee1340
    @noahhelsee1340 ปีที่แล้ว

    i prefered season 3 of S:TAS, JL, and JLU overall, but i never liked their interpretation of Batman as much as the more sensitive, complex, nuanced version in B:TAS. the heart of the character got lost (or at least seen less) in the later shows, to me, even though i thought the overall storytelling expanded and improved.

      @@kwayneboy1524 that's definitely the direction they took it! i just prefer other endings for the character (though Kevin Conroy will always be the GOAT and the great moments are still badass/funny/heartfelt).

    i really liek batman beyond because it really felt made with heart, but i also hate how it confirmed bruce solitaire and unhappy future life, while the original run of BTAS always aimed that even through the harshness and the obscurity, hope was there, small and hard to find but there, even in the original run of the btas comic's ending, it showed bruce caring to become a better man to his family and i want to believe that his true ending in another life
