  • This the fifth video in a series of how to build a Big Block Mopar Engine. Using the steps in this series, you can build a big block Mopar at home. The engine being built is a 1970 RB 413 engine from a motorhome. I will be converting this engine into a nice street cruiser for a 74' model Dodge D100, that makes great torque and is very streetable. ‪@ScottsSpeedShop‬ will hopefully follow along with me on this build! Is this the most overlooked Big Block mopar engine?
    Cam installed and front cover installed today.

    yep I only use blue lock tite on the threads of the cam bolt and the balancer after I cleaned the threads of dirt and oil . blue locks it just enough to keep it from backing off even after torqued . ive heard of cam bolt backing off and or the crank shaft bolt and the balancer go flying off like a missile ? But if you have had no issues then it's all good 😎👍

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never had a bolt back out on a Mopar. Even using the occasional Ugga dugga method. I’ve never used locktite in this situation. It’d take some serious harmonics to back out a crank bolt.

      @wheels-n-tires1846 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually had the crank bolt come loose on the Turbo Stealth, about 5k miles after the engine build. Damper came off too, but luckilly no damage except nicks on it, and a torn belt. It went back on with LocTite!! Thats about the only fastener back-off ive ever had...and I guess technically its not a Mopar so...🤔🤣

    What You have there for a 413 block...it is the heavy external webbing block typical for the industrial, heavy truck, motorhome block....have a look please at the thicknes of the cylinder walls.... ( finger in coolant opening and cylinder deck side.... so to have a feel for the thickcness ) the blocks with the figure 8 shape water passage opening are cast with the 440 tooling but have the 413 bore..... thick cyli der walls!!!
    Would be interesting to know, if Yours is also one of that kind

I am way off from the USA racing scene here in the german boonies..... could be Your 70 casting 413 cold weather block is not based on the 440 pattern.... but the later ones ( 76-78) sure are.... would be nice from You to shed some light on it....cheers and MoPar to ya....Jens

    Hi Joe, I have never done this before so your video is extremely helpful, today I have to take off the timing cover off of my new 383 I just purchased. It’s a fresh build, however I had to take the balance her off in order to paint the block the proper Chrysler turquoise for my 65. After I did that I had a few issues that I have since remedied ( I galled the 1 st thread on crank with puller but easily fixed that with a 3/4 -16 tap) I noticed that when they installed the balancer they folded over the lips seal. So today I have to take the timing chain cover off, replace the lip seal and put back together. Do I have to take the oil pan off in order to seal everything back up correctly? And my second question is I bought the Ultra black instead of the Ultra gray sealant is that OK to use on timing cover? Thanks any info would be much appreciated from you.

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for reaching out! You can leave the pan on. Many front cover kits come with a small front gasket for sealing the oil pan back to the front cover, or if you’re careful, you can reuse the oil pan gaskets. Ultra black is good. Be sure to clean all surfaces with brake or carb cleaner before applying. And don’t over torque. It’s often better to snug them up with sealant on both sides, then come back a few hours later and fully tighten. Good luck!

    I didn’t see you put the gasket at the bottom of the timing chain cover or did you just put silicone on it.looks like a gap, just wondering

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gasket is part of the oil pan gasket. The timing cover provides the front two holes for the pan to bolt to. This pan actually got two gaskets, as they sandwich the windage tray. No leaks.

  • @williambryson2190
    @williambryson2190 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    How come you used permetex on the timing cover gasket rather than the yellow dog?

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yellow dog would be fine, but it glues the gasket to both surfaces and makes it a super pain to pry the cover off later. The permatex is a softer seal and seems to fill more imperfections. Either are fine, with a dab of rtv in the corners.
