I'm autistic and a small business owner and parent of a young adult too. I bought a foreclosed 125yo level 5 hoarder house. Over 40tons trash removed so far. We have found old treasures too. Glad I'm handling it the way you do, respecting the past. Watching your videos helps me feel less alone, like I have a friend who understands what it's like in a way. Thank you for sharing your content and autistic humor.

I’ve watched at least 9 of this fellas videos and I’ve learned three things 1) He’s good people and can be trusted with delicate things. 2) I’d trust him to hold my drink at a bar 3) He really has a long standing feud with Moose. Anyway 10/10 cleaning content in my opinion
I have a rodent problem in my shed. I went to the store to find something to get rid of them. I looked up and saw a box that said, what I thought was "moose repellant!!" Of course it was mouse repellant. I am standing in the store laughing like a crazy person!! See what you have done to us!!!
I really hope that before the house gets demoed, they let some architectural salvage folks come in and take stuff like fixtures, trim, doors and hardware. People like me who live in and love 100 year plus old homes go to those small businesses for replacement materials for our homes. Especially important if you’re trying to match floorboards! It’s hard to find narrow floorboards, either as reproductions or new.
Ever see the demolition auctions? They auction off the rights to various bits and pieces, and on the designated day the successful bidders come with power tools and generators, and remove what they bought.
I live in a 202-year-old home that is built WAY better than the brand-new home we had built in 1993 (that new home was garbage). I also hope that some of this home was saved for people like me that prefer old to new any day!
I’m an archaeologist, historic preservationist and historian and I’ve fallen in love with this channel. I really appreciate how you clarified that even though the house is old, it doesn’t have a lot of historical significance. That’s an important term that really determines the preservation future for a structure. People can sometimes have a hard time with the concept of something being old but not necessarily important, because the assumption is usually that all old things are inherently equally important because they’re old. Sometimes a site or a structure just doesn’t have anything left to give up. I really appreciate your channel and I love seeing you doing the archaeology of modernity! You've just put into words something I've encountered here and there in my journey as an antiques aficionado, but never knew how to verbalize. I think in America in particular, because we're such a young country compared to many other countries out there, the idea that old=valuable is stronger here because we don't have the kind of centuries-long history to compare modernity with. It's something I struggle with too because while there are many old items that are well made and can be restored to functionality with some TLC (such as tools), there are also plenty of old things that are just junk and it's hard to see past that when you're of the mind that anything old=valuable.
I live in a low value house that may date to the late 1700s (the original part) and honestly it's a crappy little mill worker shack tossed up before the mill (I live across the rd from a big waterfall, very old mill site). It sits on whole unpeeled logs, uses wood pegs and square nails, the cellar is mud and stones. It was cheap, it has 2 additions, 1880 and we think 1940s? I think the front part is older than the mill because of the axe hewn joists and whole trees visible in the cellar. It cost 79,000 in 2012, and was gutted and drywalled in '07. It's not valuable but still pretty cool, and our yard is a goldmine of old trash. Everytime its rototilled or I sink a shovel in more than 6in, something pops out. Silverware, bottles, pottery. I have a full bucket of yard goodies. My next door neighbor found a small revolutionary war era cannonball when their tree fell. Historical places are fun, but not always super valuable.
Roman coins are so popular in the UK you can buy a bag of them for £4. ROMAN coins. That is such a bizarre fact to me being Australian. Our post colonisation history is roughly 300 years.
Years ago when my brother and I were brute forcing our way through our parents' very cluttered closet to look for our dad's will, we found so much fascinating stuff in there. I put together like 4 or 5 bags of just pictures and a few bags of documents. I also found my baby book, my brother's baby book, and my mom's baby book from 1964. One of my favorite things I found were handwritten notes my dad sent my mom while they were dating, and he wrote all of his letters on graph paper which is really in character for him lol. There was a lot of other really neat stuff we found in the closet lol
Thank you for being an inspiration to other autistic people. My three children are autistic, my oldest is a high functioning (formerly Asperger’s) adult, but has been struggling to find his place in the world. He wasn’t sure he could or should ever get married and have a family, until watching your videos. He’s now trying to figure out his thing, embracing his personality and is more open to all possibilities.

Hear hear. My husband and older son are autistic (ASD1 & ASD3), our younger son has sensory and processing issues. We enjoy watching Mack’s videos as an example for them to be able to do whatever they want in life and enjoy it.

As an autistic person myself, yes I am smart, but I have crippling social anxiety that prevents me from even leaving the house. It is terrifying. My life sucks because of autism.. but it also kinda rules. I know more about my interests than most other people do. I'm not allowed to play Harry Potter trivia with my friends because I know every answer to every question. That in particular does not make me a "savant," it just means I care about my interests. You're buying into the trope that "purpose"="super smart cool great thing." That is not what it means to everyone else. For some of us, "purpose" is in the little things; such as my love for Harry Potter, or another's love for sea creatures, or another's love for astronomy. We're not "smart," we are DEDICATED. And THAT is our "super power." You do not have to be a savant to be dedicated to your interests! Please, I beg of you, stop communicating with weirdos on social media. This world is not as dark and messed up as you think it is. (Well, America is pretty messed up, but only politically! I promise you that most normal people do NOT think of the things you are describing here.) Side note: OCD is not caused by anything, it is a genetic disorder! Please do not spread misinformation.
I must say that our 87 year old friend passed away and he left everything to our kids but we had to clean up the house as he was renting it. It took us 6 weekends working on a Saturday afternoons and full days Sundays. What a job, I still have two large tubs of stuff that I haven't had chance to go through, it was exhausting . The box is still cluttering in my house. This is really inspiring me to ho through the things once again. In the process of lifting and cleaning I had also hurt my back that took 6 months to heal.
That’s the first one of your videos that I’ve seen that made me tear up. The woman who owned all that stuff, a lot of the same stuff that I have, or wish I had, must be a very wonderful person. It’s sad to think of her declining health and her life’s worth of possessions being sorted. Our lives are like books, they have a beginning and an end, and a lot of really interesting stuff in between.
This cleaning/organization was very kind. I don't blame the elder man for moving to another place when his wife was placed in health-care. He was over his head. You are a blessing.

It's a shame the house couldn't be salvaged. You're right about the old floors. It is impressive. I live in a region that wasn't really settled until the late 1800s and homes here are typically not very old... so to see 200 year old wood floors is impressive.

I'm autistic, and a professional cleaner. Although I have a lot of qualifications, cleaning is the only job I'm actually happy doing. I clean the students' shared kitchens in a halls of residence, they are generally in a horrible state. I love my job though! I love this channel, the satisfaction from seeing a dirty place become clean is so calming. My love of cleaning started when I was 16, and had bad depression. I found that cleaning and organising my parents house gave me a feeling of control, and I guess that feeling stayed with me into adulthood.
Thank you for helping realize that when I do 1 box of clutter in my house, that it's okay to go through everything and deal with it...then take a break. I was a single parent with 1 dear daughter. A lot of times I just threw stuff in boxes and threw it in the corner just to deal with life. Now, my daughter and I are working on the clutter together finding and reliving the memories, 1 box at a time. Again, thank you for the inspiration!
My Grandma B was from Il. I remember her reaction when my mother ( DIL) went thru her house and 'threw out all those cheap looking baskets' Nana bout had a stroke when she got back from visiting...Good times.

You absolutely reminded me that hitting the like button is just the polite thing to do after enjoying someone's hour long video of him doing a really nice thing for someone else.
I used to sell vintage clothes - I was in agony watching those clothes go!! But when I had to close my business, unloading everything took weeks if not months. I had hundreds of hangers -- this part of the video is giving me PTSD! I put ads on craigslist asking people to come and get hangers, mailing stuff, clothes cleaners, shelving units, clothing racks, all the things I needed to run my business. I sold the clothes and jewelry for cheap. In one large room that had been cleared, I walked through it, said something to my husband, and literally started at how loud it was without all of that padding! It's all cleared out except for a few items I've kept for myself.
I like the fact that you explain your cleaning processes and that you respect the items that the family may want to keep. It makes me very sad when I hear folks say that their "daughter/grandaughter/cousin/ neighbor" came in and cleaned their house by throwing away the homeowner's treasures. One older gentleman that I know was an award-winning journalist in his younger days and had pics from award ceremonies with news celebrities, etc, printed copies of his articles, etc and his nieces came in to help him "clean & organize" and devastated him by THROWING THESE THINGS AWAY! (These were grown women in their 40s, not teenagers.) All they had to do was pack them into plastic totes and store them in his spare bedroom, which nobody ever used. He lived by himself and was cluttered, not trashy. His personal demeanor after their "cleaning help" was very different than before... he looked very defeated and depressed after his lifetime of accomplishments were reduced to garbage. He is a non-confrontational man, so he never told them how they made him feel. 😢
The idea of sorting through a bunch of stuff and finding all the valuable things while throwing out the rest is like a dream.Seriously. What a sense of accomplishment that must give you plus you get to check out cool historic stuff. The frustrated museum curator in me would be in heaven.
I didn't realize until I started watching your videos that my grandmother likely has some hoarding disorder. Her house looks a lot like this one, especially with important things in random drawers. Now that I watch your videos, I know how I can help her as her health is rapidly declining. I hope I can organize her possessions sooner rather than later.
My most hated thing to declutter is paperwork. Tax documents, receipts, warranties, instructions, recipes, junk mail, mortgage papers insurance, letters etc...Some things are easy because you can choose not to bring more in but paperwork of any kind is never ending. Vicki
The first time I did mine it took me 7 hours. I was drained. A whole trash bag to get rid of securely. That was difficult in itself! I swore that day to never let it get that bad again. I now have small boxes for six categories. As soon as a lid doesn’t shut properly I take the box out and sort it. Usually every three months or so.😊
Paperwork is becoming a thing of the past. I only get one paper bill a month. Used to have one filing box and I’d empty it yearly. Now that box is empty. I have a paper that has what to throw out and what to keep (maybe through Clark Howard’s site). My bookkeeper told me I didn’t have to keep donation receipts if we didn’t itemize. Today I was cutting out artwork from sketchbooks and deciding what to keep. Bound sketchbooks are a bear, but I retapped the binding. Maybe someone can use them, but I won’t!
Mac, save your back mate. Where you can, pick up a box and put it on a table or shelf before you start sorting. Kneeling and bending right over for each items adds hundreds or even thousands of full bend overs that you could have avoided or done a lesser bend. Eg. From 11:00 that dresser at the window would have been a better shelf to put the boxes on. You are precious; your back is precious- especially as a tall man.
Also about the Bibles: some of the dozens found in my old families’ homes, from the 1920s mostly, had tons of notes, like diaries or journals, in the margins on Sundays and Wednesdays (church days). Guess the sermons weren’t so great 😆 Lots of weather/crops/animals (they were farmers) and who came for supper, was sick, etc. Just daily life. Pretty interesting now, to family at least.
Your commentary on this one was so relatable. I helped clean up my great-aunt's hoarder best friend's house some time ago. We had to go through every bag and pile in the house. Part of her hoarding problem was compulsive shopping. When she would return home, she would throw the bag of items she just purchased and all of the change into a room and just leave it. We found hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in bills and change. We didn't realize this was part of what she did until we asked why it looked as though it had rained coins in the living room. We went so far as to wash piles and piles of coins that were stuck to food goo on the floor. When you mentioned the wood worms, I was immediately brought back to finding a sherpa lined Ugg boot with a bag of almonds inside of it. The almonds had become infested with tiny worms that were swimming through the sherpa of the Ugg boot. I had to throw them away. There was no way in good conscience I could donate boots that had a worm farm hiding in the sherpa. It still gives me the heebie jeebies to think about.
It's amazing that there were no mice in that house. Imagine what damage they could have done to those beautiful baskets. I call exercise bikes extra clothes draping areas. So, I got rid of mine. I don't mind being asked to "like" a video. Sometimes I am so engrossed in the video that I forget. Prayers sent to Jason and his family. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for looking through *everything* and saving their valuables! My home is full of similar treasures, even books dating back to the early 1600s. I've hidden silver coins everywhere, which should slow down whoever cleans it out once I've passed.
Love this video! Reminds me of my grandmother’s house. So many antiques! And maybe the answer to your question about why someone would have many copies of the same book… My dad had a favorite book. But because he had storage units in different parts of the state, whenever he moved he would pack it away. Then he kept losing it every time they put things in storage units. So I took him to many antique & old bookstores to find an original book. 17 copies in all. Happy memories of taking him to those bookstores. It was like a treasure hunt. He lost his eyesight in World War II. And I must’ve read it to him hundreds of times. My grandmother’s house is still standing and in good shape. I drive by it once in a while. You do realize that the book Mack mentioned was the Holy Bible? Many people receive their own copy when they are confirmed or baptized, and some Bibles have pages where you can log your family tree. This family seems to have saved the Bibles that had belonged to family members who have passed away.
Thank goodness these folks had you to sort and clean their treasures with respect. I love the serious cleaning videos you do because they motivate me to get my clutter and messes sorted. But this was a really cool one on another level entirely. Most of my family treasures were lost to a fire in the 60s when I was very young so seeing these respectfully cared for was special to me.
I think this is my favourite of all your videos. I love the fact that it is an old house but such a pity that the owners feel it is beyond rescue. As a quilter myself I had to stop the film whenever the beautiful patchwork quilt appeared and suspect there'd be more than one in a house like that, and if so I do hope the family kept them. Just started helping my partner's mother clear out her garage. Eventually the whole house, but the garage first. Thanks for having this channel around to remind me that even the most disaster zone can be conquered with two people and a little chutzpah. We made a lot of headway in just four hours yesterday, and I'm hopeful we can get it where we need it in the next couple days. You're the best, dude!
Hah, here's an update just for you, nicolab: Garage cleaned up great! We didn't have a dumpster, so my partner and I are taking away a few bags of garbage or recycling every time we visit, but there's sooooooo much more room. Two upstairs rooms have been muchly sorted and organized. Some donation piles and larger trash items, but we'll deal with them bit by bit, just like the garage trash. We're halfway through dealing with a room that was literally nothing but old paperwork that the cats had turned into a playroom 😂 It was a mess. I'm hopeful we'll get all of that finished tomorrow. It's a lot of paper shredding, but luckily we found four paper shredders and two of them even worked! I think my partner and his mom are a little exhausted by me :>

It’s bittersweet watching the cleanup of furniture. At one time those dressers and bureaus saw their owners dressing for a night out or Sunday church. Now the crew restores it for the next generation. Sunrise, sunset, son, that’s the way Tevye the hairy dairyman rolls! 😎☺️🥰
My MIL sold Longaberger for several years. Sold more to herself than anyone else :>). When she passed away we had an auction of her stuff that we didn't keep. The Longaberger sold better than anything else at the sale. And it only sold for a fraction of what she had paid for it in the beginning. (We had sold her main collection, which was a LOT, several years earlier. It also brought only a fraction of what she paid for it. )
@@jajohnson6905 The Longaberger headquarters is in Ohio. The building looks like a big basket. Longaberger was practically a religion here in Ohio back in the day.
How incredibly lucky that family is that YOU were the ones who helped them. The father must have loved seeing all those memories he could hopefully still share with his wife, not to mention all the other things that were buried. Wow. I always hit the like because it affects your public feed sightings. 😅 Love the fur babies at the end. Those light blue tables were beautiful. Lonaberger anything is a big deal in the North East & mid Atlantic... because their products are American made AND WELL MADE. Hi Michelle. I wonder if that "electrical fire" is when her stroke happened. She might have hit the electrical breaker and then realizing what COULD have happened, then suddenly had the stroke. That could be why it was all still plugged up. Lots of folks don't realize that the circuit could re-energize and re-ignite if that breaker gets flipped on. Often, folks don't know enough to protect themselves when it comes to electrical "stuff". For instance, many don't know that once the breaker box or fuse box is shut off at the mains, any circuit beyond the box ( in the house) is okay to unplug or repair. Too many don't even realize that cutting off the power at the box is necessary before doing circuit or outlet work. AND IN MANY OLDER HOUSES, you have multiple outlets plugged into the same fuses/breakers. That alone is a fire hazard because it constantly trips and then they either use larger fuses or a penny underneath which defeats the purpose of the fuse/breaker to shut off before the overload CAUSES a fire. Sorry. Worked on radios & their electrical power boxes in USAF so it's a pet peeve when I see the danger people don't even KNOW they're getting themselves AND THEIR FAMILIES into. I'm a bit anal when it comes to thoroughly researching before tackling certain things: electrical, mechanical, computer, engineering... BECAUSE of the dangers they CAN lead into with half ***** jumping in. I've run across a few people in FB comments that are convinced YOU are the one who stole someone else's channel BECAUSE you're on utube. No reaching them about the truth. Too determined they're right. Totally get your channel name wrong, too. Hope you get your goal "plaque" wise. Looking forward to the next few hoarding clean outs. BTW that Mr. Clean clean freak is the only cleaner in 15 years NOT to set off my allergies and asthma. Using it everywhere. Thanks for the info on that.

Beans! I suspect this was once a very nice house with nice things in it. It still has some very nice pieces of furniture. Such a shame to see it so dilapidated now. You did a great job clearing and sorting it. I love that you go through everything and don't throw away good stuff by accident. I would trust you to do this in my home if it were necessary. This has been a great video series. A bit of everything. It's funny that you think a 200 year old house is really old. I'm selling my mum's terraced city house at the moment and that's 100 years old and looks kind of like every other in the city. My own house is fast approaching 300 years, could be a lot longer but we know it was here in it's current format in 1742. No idea when it was first built. The difference is that we build everything in stone or brick. Sometimes we have older timer framed buildings but the frames are usually enormous tree trunks. They aren't going anywhere. American houses, especially older ones, but not exclusively older, all look like they might fall over in a stiff breeze and if they stay upright, bugs eat them.
I got the feeling that this house was happy. I know that sounds weird but, when you were done she just seemed to have joy coming from her. I love old houses I spent many childhood years in a Queen Anne and a Craftsman. So I loved seeing the original wood floor.
All your furbabies watching tv together is so cute! I love all of those old wood floors and the couples beautiful antique furniture. That was a lot to sort out and as always, you all did a great job. Holy moly, a house from 1629?! That's incredible. Long ago, my hubby visited the UK on a business trip and out of curiosity, stopped into a hardware store to check out what they had for home repairs. He found oak pegs, knob and tube wiring parts, in addition to your standard modern steel nails and screws. BTW-here in the USA, there are a few buildings and structures that can be traced to the 16th and 17th century when Europeans first began arriving and colonizing America, especially in the eastern states like Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. Anything prior to that are Native American ruins, some of which are impressive in and of themselves (check out the Anasazi ruins in the Southwest USA!)

They also have preservation requirements to keep them looking original, and special funding from the state to allow to go the extra mile. I loved this house! And I saw a documentary about the Anasazi ruins, really interesting, and thank you for proposing it. I'll rewatch...
The US are rookies when it comes to old stuff. My friend used to live in Giza (yeah, that one!). There’s more room in there than you think. And you get all your steps for the day just finding your way out. Now top that.😅😂

Don’t worry about the gloves. I’m a retired nurse that learned the old school method of actually thinking about what I’m touching & knowing if the intact skin on my hands & washing them afterwards is sufficient protection. So many people are developing latex allergies due to excessive glove use.
What a beautiful job you did, Mack! Sorting through trash and treasures and working SO hard! I am so pleased the sisters found you! So many exciting finds -- things of monetary worth and things of family worth. A great job!
One trick I picked up for cleaning carpet is to just use a broom. Had done it out of necessity when working late nights and had a toddler sleeping when I had the time/energy to clean. Seemed to work better than a vacuum, too.
I just drag it outside and bang it with a broom. Like in the old days. That would only wake up the kids if I hit my knee on the way past the coffee table. 😂 (Before vacs.)
Thanks for the reminder about breaks. I’ve started taking “mental health breaks” when doing unpleasant tasks to avoid escalating anxiety. I love that it feels like a reward and I can be deliberate about acknowledging what I’ve accomplished. Overall, I can’t do more because I never burn out anymore. ❤❤👊🏼

Wow 🤩 All I can say is wow! What an incredible transformation. This is really one to be proud of. You mentioned one of the family members was working on a grandmothers home. My sister and I lost our grandmother then mother fairly close together. Thankfully no hoarding but even then emotionally and physically it was exhausting. We’re still dealing with all the contents. Month by month year by year we’re emotionally ready to let go a little more. ❤ Thank you for the work you do. It’s critically important 😊

This reminds me of my mother's home. She worked herself to death and spent all her available cash after paying bills on decorations for her home. Meanwhile as her home filled with lovely decorations the actual house itself began to deteriorate around her. It's was so sad. But thankfully I was financially able to make the necessary repairs.
I really enjoy your videos! earlier this week I deep cleaned my kitchen, and using the idea of "consolidating" I discovered I actually had more space than I thought, and I managed to free my counters of random stuff that I seldom used! also, the whole "let the beans go!" helped me so much to let go of spices that were 7+ years old. my ex used them to cook, and I didn't, but they were there because "spices don't go bad". I let those spices go and now I actually have space for the stuff I DO use! XD thank you!
This clean up is the one where I had the most "OOOH! I could use that!" and "Oh! That's so cool. I'd take it!" moments. I suspect that was real Pyrex I was seeing, too. found treasures: as we made a cursory tour to clean out a family home build only in 1967 but housed four generations, along with fairly current reading novels, I found the passports my great grandfather and great grandmother used to come over here from the Old Country, in the early 1900s, and one of their Alien Registration cards. All in a hand embroidered pouch.

This house was really interesting, lots of lovely brown furniture that cleaned up beautifully (especially the 5 drawer chest). The lady owner had a good eye for nice pieces. I loved the patchwork quilt on the bed, that might be worth good money too. It is a shame that the lady is now in care, she cannot tell us about her things. As for the like button, isn't it supposed to help the algorithm? So that it promotes your channel to other people watching on YT? That's how I got hooked! Love your channel so much Mack and Jason. Longaberger also used to sell wrought iron with wood furniture. My oldest Son took my whole set of Longaberger dishes (full set of 12) mixing bowls, lasagna- casserole dishes, pie plates, butter dishes, salt and pepper, etc...He's a chef, and ALL of my Longaberger ceramics held up through my boys' upbringing with not 1 pc ever chipped or broken. Now he uses the whole set! 😊

It can get so overwhelming looking at the big picture, but you’re able to describe how to tackle it step by step where it becomes doable. My organizational skills are basically nonexistent since I was a child (and I’m older than you,) but when you explain how to start the process, it clicks and makes sense. Always a treat seeing your videos! Narration is the unique edge that no one else has. At first I didn't understand how it could be cheaper to bulldoze and rebuild, but after a bit it really made sense. You'd have to strip it to the studs and probably replace a good bit of that too. I've seen some people do projects like that but it's always special circumstances making it doable. Like being a professional and able to do most of it yourself, turning it into youtube content or just doing a room at a time as you can afford it instead of taking out a huge loan up front.
You helped me a lot getting rid of 48 years of junk is mind blowing. But it’s a good idea to move everything out of a room then you can clean the rest of the house putting good junk in there Great way of doing cleaning. Thanks for doing hard work. Believe me this is very hard work! I cleaned vacant apartments before. I injured myself many times.
My take on gloves - and I know, I am an MD 🤣: Our body and immune system can take care of a lot of things and our skin is one of the many marvels our body is made of. Both the immune system and the skin will protect you well for almost all the everyday dirt. I would advise gloves - like you do - when there is biohazard involved and when dealing with chemicals or bottles you don't know what's in it, acids can make really nasty wounds (and think of your eyes here as well). It's different for masks, there I would be more careful, especially when there is mold around. Our lungs are quite delicate and usually sterile and they can be overwhelmed and get sick much easier if the amount of particles you inhale are massive. Take care and keep up the good work!

Story time! I recently bought and moved into my first house. Not needing any major repairs, but little things, and unpacking is a bear (or a moose). When I start to get overwhelmed, I hear your voice in my head saying just pick the thing that annoys you the most, or work in small areas at a time. It's super helpful, and I can't thank you enough. I was completely surprised that house didn’t have mice. For as old as it is you would think there were plenty of ways for the mice to get in. The saying “they don’t make things like they use to” is true. You did a great job as usual, of course Jason and your friend too!

I really hope that before the house gets demoed, they let some architectural salvage folks come in and take stuff like fixtures, trim, doors and hardware. People like me who live in and love 100 year plus old homes go to those small businesses for replacement materials for our homes. Especially important if you’re trying to match floorboards! It’s hard to find narrow floorboards, either as reproductions or new.
Ever see the demolition auctions? They auction off the rights to various bits and pieces, and on the designated day the successful bidders come with power tools and generators, and remove what they bought.
I live in a 202-year-old home that is built WAY better than the brand-new home we had built in 1993 (that new home was garbage). I also hope that some of this home was saved for people like me that prefer old to new any day!
I’m an archaeologist, historic preservationist and historian and I’ve fallen in love with this channel. I really appreciate how you clarified that even though the house is old, it doesn’t have a lot of historical significance. That’s an important term that really determines the preservation future for a structure. People can sometimes have a hard time with the concept of something being old but not necessarily important, because the assumption is usually that all old things are inherently equally important because they’re old. Sometimes a site or a structure just doesn’t have anything left to give up.

You've just put into words something I've encountered here and there in my journey as an antiques aficionado, but never knew how to verbalize. I think in America in particular, because we're such a young country compared to many other countries out there, the idea that old=valuable is stronger here because we don't have the kind of centuries-long history to compare modernity with. It's something I struggle with too because while there are many old items that are well made and can be restored to functionality with some TLC (such as tools), there are also plenty of old things that are just junk and it's hard to see past that when you're of the mind that anything old=valuable.

I live in a low value house that may date to the late 1700s (the original part) and honestly it's a crappy little mill worker shack tossed up before the mill (I live across the rd from a big waterfall, very old mill site). It sits on whole unpeeled logs, uses wood pegs and square nails, the cellar is mud and stones. It was cheap, it has 2 additions, 1880 and we think 1940s? I think the front part is older than the mill because of the axe hewn joists and whole trees visible in the cellar. It cost 79,000 in 2012, and was gutted and drywalled in '07. It's not valuable but still pretty cool, and our yard is a goldmine of old trash. Everytime its rototilled or I sink a shovel in more than 6in, something pops out. Silverware, bottles, pottery. I have a full bucket of yard goodies. My next door neighbor found a small revolutionary war era cannonball when their tree fell. Historical places are fun, but not always super valuable.
Roman coins are so popular in the UK you can buy a bag of them for £4. ROMAN coins. That is such a bizarre fact to me being Australian. Our post colonisation history is roughly 300 years.
Years ago when my brother and I were brute forcing our way through our parents' very cluttered closet to look for our dad's will, we found so much fascinating stuff in there. I put together like 4 or 5 bags of just pictures and a few bags of documents. I also found my baby book, my brother's baby book, and my mom's baby book from 1964. One of my favorite things I found were handwritten notes my dad sent my mom while they were dating, and he wrote all of his letters on graph paper which is really in character for him lol. There was a lot of other really neat stuff we found in the closet lol
You saw the value in those things, and that is cool!

My three children are autistic, my oldest is a high functioning (formerly Asperger’s) adult, but has been struggling to find his place in the world. He wasn’t sure he could or should ever get married and have a family, until watching your videos. He’s now trying to figure out his thing, embracing his personality and is more open to all possibilities.

As an autistic person myself, yes I am smart, but I have crippling social anxiety that prevents me from even leaving the house. It is terrifying. My life sucks because of autism.. but it also kinda rules. I know more about my interests than most other people do. I'm not allowed to play Harry Potter trivia with my friends because I know every answer to every question. That in particular does not make me a "savant," it just means I care about my interests.
You're buying into the trope that "purpose"="super smart cool great thing." That is not what it means to everyone else. For some of us, "purpose" is in the little things; such as my love for Harry Potter, or another's love for sea creatures, or another's love for astronomy. We're not "smart," we are DEDICATED. And THAT is our "super power." You do not have to be a savant to be dedicated to your interests!

I must say that our 87 year old friend passed away and he left everything to our kids but we had to clean up the house as he was renting it. It took us 6 weekends working on a Saturday afternoons and full days Sundays. What a job, I still have two large tubs of stuff that I haven't had chance to go through, it was exhausting . The box is still cluttering in my house. This is really inspiring me to ho through the things once again. In the process of lifting and cleaning I had also hurt my back that took 6 months to heal.
That’s the first one of your videos that I’ve seen that made me tear up. The woman who owned all that stuff, a lot of the same stuff that I have, or wish I had, must be a very wonderful person. It’s sad to think of her declining health and her life’s worth of possessions being sorted. Our lives are like books, they have a beginning and an end, and a lot of really interesting stuff in between.

It's a shame the house couldn't be salvaged. You're right about the old floors. It is impressive. I live in a region that wasn't really settled until the late 1800s and homes here are typically not very old... so to see 200 year old wood floors is impressive.

I'm autistic, and a professional cleaner. Although I have a lot of qualifications, cleaning is the only job I'm actually happy doing. I clean the students' shared kitchens in a halls of residence, they are generally in a horrible state. I love my job though! I love this channel, the satisfaction from seeing a dirty place become clean is so calming. My love of cleaning started when I was 16, and had bad depression. I found that cleaning and organising my parents house gave me a feeling of control, and I guess that feeling stayed with me into adulthood.
Thank you for helping realize that when I do 1 box of clutter in my house, that it's okay to go through everything and deal with it...then take a break. I was a single parent with 1 dear daughter. A lot of times I just threw stuff in boxes and threw it in the corner just to deal with life. Now, my daughter and I are working on the clutter together finding and reliving the memories, 1 box at a time. Again, thank you for the inspiration!

I used to sell vintage clothes - I was in agony watching those clothes go!! But when I had to close my business, unloading everything took weeks if not months. I had hundreds of hangers -- this part of the video is giving me PTSD! I put ads on craigslist asking people to come and get hangers, mailing stuff, clothes cleaners, shelving units, clothing racks, all the things I needed to run my business. I sold the clothes and jewelry for cheap. In one large room that had been cleared, I walked through it, said something to my husband, and literally started at how loud it was without all of that padding! It's all cleared out except for a few items I've kept for myself.

I like the fact that you explain your cleaning processes and that you respect the items that the family may want to keep. It makes me very sad when I hear folks say that their "daughter/grandaughter/cousin/ neighbor" came in and cleaned their house by throwing away the homeowner's treasures. One older gentleman that I know was an award-winning journalist in his younger days and had pics from award ceremonies with news celebrities, etc, printed copies of his articles, etc and his nieces came in to help him "clean & organize" and devastated him by THROWING THESE THINGS AWAY! (These were grown women in their 40s, not teenagers.) All they had to do was pack them into plastic totes and store them in his spare bedroom, which nobody ever used. He lived by himself and was cluttered, not trashy. His personal demeanor after their "cleaning help" was very different than before... he looked very defeated and depressed after his lifetime of accomplishments were reduced to garbage. He is a non-confrontational man, so he never told them how they made him feel. 😢

It is fun,but alas that's not all a curator has to do. The other stuff is frustrating, boring and sucks the marrow of your soul dry.
I didn't realize until I started watching your videos that my grandmother likely has some hoarding disorder. Her house looks a lot like this one, especially with important things in random drawers. Now that I watch your videos, I know how I can help her as her health is rapidly declining. I hope I can organize her possessions sooner rather than later.

My most hated thing to declutter is paperwork. Tax documents, receipts, warranties, instructions, recipes, junk mail, mortgage papers insurance, letters etc...Some things are easy because you can choose not to bring more in but paperwork of any kind is never ending. Vicki
I love going thru paperwork! People think it's odd. If I live nearby (Reading, Pennsylvania) I would be thrilled to help out.
The first time I did mine it took me 7 hours. I was drained. A whole trash bag to get rid of securely. That was difficult in itself! I swore that day to never let it get that bad again. I now have small boxes for six categories. As soon as a lid doesn’t shut properly I take the box out and sort it. Usually every three months or so.😊
Paperwork is becoming a thing of the past. I only get one paper bill a month. Used to have one filing box and I’d empty it yearly. Now that box is empty. I have a paper that has what to throw out and what to keep (maybe through Clark Howard’s site). My bookkeeper told me I didn’t have to keep donation receipts if we didn’t itemize. Today I was cutting out artwork from sketchbooks and deciding what to keep. Bound sketchbooks are a bear, but I retapped the binding. Maybe someone can use them, but I won’t!
Exactly my feeling regarding paperwork clutter.
Mac, save your back mate. Where you can, pick up a box and put it on a table or shelf before you start sorting. Kneeling and bending right over for each items adds hundreds or even thousands of full bend overs that you could have avoided or done a lesser bend. Eg. From 11:00 that dresser at the window would have been a better shelf to put the boxes on.
You are precious; your back is precious- especially as a tall man.
Also about the Bibles: some of the dozens found in my old families’ homes, from the 1920s mostly, had tons of notes, like diaries or journals, in the margins on Sundays and Wednesdays (church days). Guess the sermons weren’t so great 😆
Lots of weather/crops/animals (they were farmers) and who came for supper, was sick, etc. Just daily life. Pretty interesting now, to family at least.
Iv bean is some houses that burn down and for some reason bibles and wedding rings always survive intact

Your commentary on this one was so relatable. I helped clean up my great-aunt's hoarder best friend's house some time ago. We had to go through every bag and pile in the house. Part of her hoarding problem was compulsive shopping. When she would return home, she would throw the bag of items she just purchased and all of the change into a room and just leave it. We found hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in bills and change. We didn't realize this was part of what she did until we asked why it looked as though it had rained coins in the living room. We went so far as to wash piles and piles of coins that were stuck to food goo on the floor.
When you mentioned the wood worms, I was immediately brought back to finding a sherpa lined Ugg boot with a bag of almonds inside of it. The almonds had become infested with tiny worms that were swimming through the sherpa of the Ugg boot. I had to throw them away. There was no way in good conscience I could donate boots that had a worm farm hiding in the sherpa. It still gives me the heebie jeebies to think about.
It's amazing that there were no mice in that house. Imagine what damage they could have done to those beautiful baskets.
I call exercise bikes extra clothes draping areas. So, I got rid of mine. I don't mind being asked to "like" a video. Sometimes I am so engrossed in the video that I forget. Prayers sent to Jason and his family. 🙏🙏🙏

Love this video! Reminds me of my grandmother’s house. So many antiques! And maybe the answer to your question about why someone would have many copies of the same book… My dad had a favorite book. But because he had storage units in different parts of the state, whenever he moved he would pack it away. Then he kept losing it every time they put things in storage units. So I took him to many antique & old bookstores to find an original book. 17 copies in all. Happy memories of taking him to those bookstores. It was like a treasure hunt. He lost his eyesight in World War II. And I must’ve read it to him hundreds of times. My grandmother’s house is still standing and in good shape. I drive by it once in a while. You do realize that the book Mack mentioned was the Holy Bible? Many people receive their own copy when they are confirmed or baptized, and some Bibles have pages where you can log your family tree. This family seems to have saved the Bibles that had belonged to family members who have passed away.
I'm so glad you respect family history documentation, important papers and all those other treasures that are in the most weird places.
Thank goodness these folks had you to sort and clean their treasures with respect. I love the serious cleaning videos you do because they motivate me to get my clutter and messes sorted. But this was a really cool one on another level entirely. Most of my family treasures were lost to a fire in the 60s when I was very young so seeing these respectfully cared for was special to me.
I think this is my favourite of all your videos. I love the fact that it is an old house but such a pity that the owners feel it is beyond rescue. As a quilter myself I had to stop the film whenever the beautiful patchwork quilt appeared and suspect there'd be more than one in a house like that, and if so I do hope the family kept them. Hah, here's an update just for you, nicolab: Garage cleaned up great! We didn't have a dumpster, so my partner and I are taking away a few bags of garbage or recycling every time we visit, but there's sooooooo much more room. Two upstairs rooms have been muchly sorted and organized. Some donation piles and larger trash items, but we'll deal with them bit by bit, just like the garage trash. We're halfway through dealing with a room that was literally nothing but old paperwork that the cats had turned into a playroom 😂 It was a mess. I'm hopeful we'll get all of that finished tomorrow. It's a lot of paper shredding, but luckily we found four paper shredders and two of them even worked!
I think my partner and his mom are a little exhausted by me :>

It’s bittersweet watching the cleanup of furniture. At one time those dressers and bureaus saw their owners dressing for a night out or Sunday church. Now the crew restores it for the next generation. Sunrise, sunset, son, that’s the way Tevye the hairy dairyman rolls! 😎☺️🥰
My MIL sold Longaberger for several years. Sold more to herself than anyone else :>). When she passed away we had an auction of her stuff that we didn't keep. The Longaberger sold better than anything else at the sale. And it only sold for a fraction of what she had paid for it in the beginning. (We had sold her main collection, which was a LOT, several years earlier. It also brought only a fraction of what she paid for it. )

How incredibly lucky that family is that YOU were the ones who helped them. The father must have loved seeing all those memories he could hopefully still share with his wife, not to mention all the other things that were buried. Wow. You just never know what is behind closed doors no matter what or where they are, which I totally understand. It is sad. Thank you for sharing and for all you do.

I wonder if that "electrical fire" is when her stroke happened. She might have hit the electrical breaker and then realizing what COULD have happened, then suddenly had the stroke. That could be why it was all still plugged up. Lots of folks don't realize that the circuit could re-energize and re-ignite if that breaker gets flipped on. Often, folks don't know enough to protect themselves when it comes to electrical "stuff". For instance, many don't know that once the breaker box or fuse box is shut off at the mains, any circuit beyond the box ( in the house) is okay to unplug or repair. Too many don't even realize that cutting off the power at the box is necessary before doing circuit or outlet work.
AND IN MANY OLDER HOUSES, you have multiple outlets plugged into the same fuses/breakers. That alone is a fire hazard because it constantly trips and then they either use larger fuses or a penny underneath which defeats the purpose of the fuse/breaker to shut off before the overload CAUSES a fire.
Sorry. Worked on radios & their electrical power boxes in USAF so it's a pet peeve when I see the danger people don't even KNOW they're getting themselves AND THEIR FAMILIES into.
I'm a bit anal when it comes to thoroughly researching before tackling certain things: electrical, mechanical, computer, engineering... BECAUSE of the dangers they CAN lead into with half ***** jumping in.
I've run across a few people in FB comments that are convinced YOU are the one who stole someone else's channel BECAUSE you're on utube. No reaching them about the truth. Too determined they're right. Totally get your channel name wrong, too.

I suspect this was once a very nice house with nice things in it. It still has some very nice pieces of furniture. Such a shame to see it so dilapidated now. You did a great job clearing and sorting it. I love that you go through everything and don't throw away good stuff by accident. I would trust you to do this in my home if it were necessary. This has been a great video series. A bit of everything.
It's funny that you think a 200 year old house is really old. I'm selling my mum's terraced city house at the moment and that's 100 years old and looks kind of like every other in the city. My own house is fast approaching 300 years, could be a lot longer but we know it was here in it's current format in 1742. No idea when it was first built. The difference is that we build everything in stone or brick. Sometimes we have older timer framed buildings but the frames are usually enormous tree trunks. They aren't going anywhere. American houses, especially older ones, but not exclusively older, all look like they might fall over in a stiff breeze and if they stay upright, bugs eat them.
I got the feeling that this house was happy. I know that sounds weird but, when you were done she just seemed to have joy coming from her. I love old houses I spent many childhood years in a Queen Anne and a Craftsman. So I loved seeing the original wood floor.
I felt the same way. It's not fancy. It needs some work. But it is a happy home. I bet anyone walking in would feel that.

Holy moly, a house from 1629?! That's incredible. Long ago, my hubby visited the UK on a business trip and out of curiosity, stopped into a hardware store to check out what they had for home repairs. He found oak pegs, knob and tube wiring parts, in addition to your standard modern steel nails and screws.
BTW-here in the USA, there are a few buildings and structures that can be traced to the 16th and 17th century when Europeans first began arriving and colonizing America, especially in the eastern states like Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. Anything prior to that are Native American ruins, some of which are impressive in and of themselves (check out the Anasazi ruins in the Southwest USA!)

They also have preservation requirements to keep them looking original, and special funding from the state to allow to go the extra mile. I loved this house! And I saw a documentary about the Anasazi ruins, really interesting, and thank you for proposing it. I'll rewatch...
The US are rookies when it comes to old stuff. My friend used to live in Giza (yeah, that one!). There’s more room in there than you think. And you get all your steps for the day just finding your way out. Now top that.😅😂

Don’t worry about the gloves. I’m a retired nurse that learned the old school method of actually thinking about what I’m touching & knowing if the intact skin on my hands & washing them afterwards is sufficient protection. So many people are developing latex allergies due to excessive glove use.

One trick I picked up for cleaning carpet is to just use a broom. Had done it out of necessity when working late nights and had a toddler sleeping when I had the time/energy to clean. Seemed to work better than a vacuum, too.
I just drag it outside and bang it with a broom. Like in the old days. That would only wake up the kids if I hit my knee on the way past the coffee table. 😂

Thanks for the reminder about breaks. I’ve started taking “mental health breaks” when doing unpleasant tasks to avoid escalating anxiety. I love that it feels like a reward and I can be deliberate about acknowledging what I’ve accomplished. Overall, I can’t do more because I never burn out anymore. ❤❤👊🏼
It helps me to put on music or the TV as some background noise and distraction. I don't know if that would help you.

My sister and I lost our grandmother then mother fairly close together. Thankfully no hoarding but even then emotionally and physically it was exhausting. We’re still dealing with all the contents. Month by month year by year we’re emotionally ready to let go a little more. ❤

Finding ANY photos that old is literally the coolest thing. It's a glimpse into how people of that timeframe lived their lives. Like without Diablo 2. And cat videos.
This reminds me of my mother's home. She worked herself to death and spent all her available cash after paying bills on decorations for her home. Meanwhile as her home filled with lovely decorations the actual house itself began to deteriorate around her. It's was so sad. But thankfully I was financially able to make the necessary repairs.
I really enjoy your videos! earlier this week I deep cleaned my kitchen, and using the idea of "consolidating" I discovered I actually had more space than I thought, and I managed to free my counters of random stuff that I seldom used! also, the whole "let the beans go!" helped me so much to let go of spices that were 7+ years old. my ex used them to cook, and I didn't, but they were there because "spices don't go bad". I let those spices go and now I actually have space for the stuff I DO use! XD thank you!
Spices don't go bad but they lose their flavour and any health benefits they have as fresh or freshly opened fade away.

found treasures: as we made a cursory tour to clean out a family home build only in 1967 but housed four generations, along with fairly current reading novels, I found the passports my great grandfather and great grandmother used to come over here from the Old Country, in the early 1900s, and one of their Alien Registration cards. All in a hand embroidered pouch.

This house was really interesting, lots of lovely brown furniture that cleaned up beautifully (especially the 5 drawer chest). The lady owner had a good eye for nice pieces. I loved the patchwork quilt on the bed, that might be worth good money too. It is a shame that the lady is now in care, she cannot tell us about her things. As for the like button, isn't it supposed to help the algorithm? So that it promotes your channel to other people watching on YT? That's how I got hooked! Love your channel so much Mack and Jason. Longaberger also used to sell wrought iron with wood furniture. My oldest Son took my whole set of Longaberger dishes (full set of 12) mixing bowls, lasagna-
casserole dishes, pie plates, butter dishes, salt and pepper, etc...He's a chef, and ALL of my Longaberger ceramics held up through my boys' upbringing with not 1 pc ever chipped or broken. Now he uses the whole set! 😊

Always a treat seeing your videos! Narration is the unique edge that no one else has. At first I didn't understand how it could be cheaper to bulldoze and rebuild, but after a bit it really made sense. You'd have to strip it to the studs and probably replace a good bit of that too. I've seen some people do projects like that but it's always special circumstances making it doable. Like being a professional and able to do most of it yourself, turning it into youtube content or just doing a room at a time as you can afford it instead of taking out a huge loan up front.
You helped me a lot getting rid of 48 years of junk is mind blowing. But it’s a good idea to move everything out of a room then you can clean the rest of the house putting good junk in there Great way of doing cleaning. Thanks for doing hard work. Believe me this is very hard work! I cleaned vacant apartments before. I injured myself many times.
My take on gloves - and I know, I am an MD 🤣: Our body and immune system can take care of a lot of things and our skin is one of the many marvels our body is made of. Both the immune system and the skin will protect you well for almost all the everyday dirt. I would advise gloves - like you do - when there is biohazard involved and when dealing with chemicals or bottles you don't know what's in it, acids can make really nasty wounds (and think of your eyes here as well). It's different for masks, there I would be more careful, especially when there is mold around. Our lungs are quite delicate and usually sterile and they can be overwhelmed and get sick much easier if the amount of particles you inhale are massive. Take care and keep up the good work!

Story time! I recently bought and moved into my first house. Not needing any major repairs, but little things, and unpacking is a bear (or a moose). When I start to get overwhelmed, I hear your voice in my head saying just pick the thing that annoys you the most, or work in small areas at a time. It's super helpful, and I can't thank you enough. Love your videos in general, but they are helpful to me practically as well. So grateful for all the cleaning and reparing tips. Happy weekend!

There are so many things I like about this video: one, of course learning where to put the severed heads of my vanquished enemies… Two you gave out great cleaning advice, and the one that I am going to put into action tomorrow when I do my studio is, don’t worry about making a mess in another room while you clean up a room. It makes so much sense! Three: your humor had me laughing all the way through… Four I love the wildcats at the end. How do you get them to stay in your house? Or do they just claw you up every day and you say oh well that’s the price I pay for having Wildcats?
