I have the 1979 edition of this deck with the " 1971 US GAMES" on the side. It also has the little squiggle you mention on the Sun card. In fact the cards look identical line for line ( from what I can see ) just the skin tone looks slightly darker on my set. I bought them in about 1980 and only rarely used them. It was a beautifull bright Summers day when I bought them so when I see the images Im brought back to that time when I was young and carefree. I,ve gifted them to my son. I have the " Original " but dont like the dark colors and blotchy print. I,ve ordered the Albano Waite deck but now I hear complaints about the cardstock on Utube. Im hoping its not as bad as they say...
The 1971 is the copyright. That is not to be confused with year of printing. What a lot of people like about the old editions is not only there are no copyright on the front, but also the cardstock. They were produced by AG Muller. AGM is still around under the name AGM-Urania now, and they have a website selling various great decks. Their cardstock is still amazing today. Different though from the early 1970s. Also, printing and reproduction quality. AGM's decks were far superior then, they are still superior now, compared to China produced decks issued by US Games. This is just my personal opinion of course.
Nobody Here I ordered the Albano Waite deck by US GAMES a few days ago but now Im seeing a lot of reviews on Utube complaining about the poor quality cardstock. Im still hoping they are wrong and only see the heavy lamination ( their main gripe ) as a sign of low quality. Have you seen that deck first hand ?...
I don't buy US Games' RWS decks :D Their reproduction quality is pretty bad in my personal opinion. So I have my much beloved RWS reproduction of the first edition from 1909-1910 by AGM-Urania. Sadly, US Games have blocked its distribution and sales in the US, Canada, and the UK. Supposedly copyright matters. I am no lawyer, but I am no idiot either. So....
Nobody Here I looked at their website after you mentioned them and their good quality, but there does,nt seem to be any RWS decks of any discription there. Copyrighted as you said 😕 Anyway, Im still looking forward to seeing the Albano deck despite all the complaints. I looked at a Utube comparison of the old and new Albanos. The lady was pointing out the colour differances but apart from the mauve, the rest looked pretty much okay to me ( allowing for fading on the older deck ) maybe not a perfect match but near enough. Just hope the card stock is,nt too bad..
The cardstock of the old 1970s version printed by AGM (AG Muller) is really no comparison. For AGM-Urania's decks, try an ebay seller called 8.com.pl Good luck!
Yes. The cardstock is indeed, something else :D I wonder if AG Muller (in their current iteration and incarnation) might be able to return to that cardstock :D I am sure US Games will put a stop to that LOL Anything to continue selling their inferior, most ugliest (yes, I said most, and -est together) edition I suppose :P Yeah. Those copyright prints are real pests....!
Nobody Here we need a card stock that's think enough to last but so think u can't shuffle or handle them well and makes the deck way bigger than it should be, my first deck I ever got(which I do still love) has a card stock that is almost like cardboard and it makes the deck as a whole bigger than normal, you can't handle it as well and if u were to try and give it a good riffle shuffle it would bend them in a way that gives them a huge crease in them and that's if u could could them to bend enough to shuffle
Cave Man The Albany Waite was printed without copyright for a lot longer I think? It must have came under a different commercial arrangements compared to the standard RWS. I have one from 1991 I think not sure. But it doesn't have copyright on the cards. It is well worn though so the feel of the lamination and the card has been altered I am sure from how it was originally. So it is hard to comment on them.
:P I offered the equivalent of US $25 (because I saw some sold for that much, and of course I heard of others getting theirs for around that price!!!), and the seller practically told me to go suck a lemon LOL :P Oh well......
Yeah. You know what, as I keep telling myself, anyone can ask for anything. Whether anyone bites is what counts. So I basically just look at sold prices, and not asking prices. Because asking prices are like thumbs down on YT :P They don't mean anything :D
hi there, just catching up on your AMAZING videos & I have came across this one, reason I have not gone in order is that I am only interested in, THE RWS DECKS, & I would just like to add that over the past 2 years these vintage decks have shot up in price about, 50% WOW I here you say, but its true, & if you desire a blushing fool deck, the price I would say on average in the UK , is around £40 / £60. I have had many of decks at the lower end priced, which for a vintage deck, to me personally is ok, ps take a look at my videos, M.S.G.TAROT, there is a very RARE deck, well take care & BB X
M.S.G TAROT Hello thanks for such lovely words and thank you for your info! Indeed I suspect the prices might have gone up as vintage and antique items are always in limited supply and all you need is a steady increase in demand. But these things are very volatile. As quickly as it goes up it can all come crashing down. Because demand alone is fickle thing. Printing quality wise I think AGM-Urania latest Tarot of AE Waite really serves as an equal to these vintage ones. But USG making it hard to get certainly keep demands of these vintage one, perhaps, high? Or those desiring the older seemingly interesting cardstock might? Who knows. Sometimes, hype can sustain a price too. But anyway I continue to believe that it is up to the market (buyers) to keep prices “sane” 😊 Thanks for stopping by!
hi there, i totally agree with what you say, & yes i also agree with the AGM deck is a really close deck to the 1909 deck, & if they come together with a decision to design a 100% copy repro deck with the authentic PCS Font, that would be the being of another collectable deck for future generations, to continue the legacy of the GREAT ,, RWS decks......BB X
I am well aware of your feelings regarding missing a bargain. I missed Amazon stock in the 300s and it shot up to the high 900s. I did not buy it because the stock did not pay a dividend. Now how stupid was that?" I did my research also. As my father would say, you can not catch all the fish in the sea.
Bocciatissimo
Thin isn’t always bad. AGM Urania’s cardstock is thin BUT DENSE. Thin is good when dense because it means it SHUFFLES easier, and better, WITHOUT compromising the integrity of the cards because the CORE is strong. Warping or bending of cards HAPPENS TO EVERY CARDSTOCK IF YOU PUT THE CARDS IN CHANGING HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE LEVELS. This is the law of physics. Colour calibration be it yellow or blue or whatever is a matter of PERSONAL PREFERENCE. US Games’ edition of their RWS were PRINTED BY AGM until the 1970s. So if you love those US Games branded ones THEY ARE MADE BY AGM. US Games’ own printing is the start of the UGLY version of the RWS and started its reputation as the ugliest tarot deck known to humanity.
Very nice and look forward to the comparison video, thank you :-)
Chris Smith Thanks for dropping by Chris :) I will do that comparison as soon as possible :)
I enjoy the comparison videos with all of the background history and such ... Katey Flowers did a nice one recently.
I saw that just before I received this today :D Temperance Tarot also has a comparison of the USG "yellow boxes" :)
I watched Temperance's comparison too. It's a very interesting topic, to me. I bet that package was a tiny bundle of joy :-)
It was. Then it was not (when I saw the edges and some marks and crease on a few cards). Then it was (when I shuffled it) :D :P

Can you link the comparison video here????
I like the older versions because of the coloring and the fact that they didn't have the copyright ON THE CARDS which is annoying to me at least.
And the card stock! It looks "old" and feels wonderful.
I don't riffle shuffle and love thicker cardstock :D

Yeah. You know what, as I keep telling myself, anyone can ask for anything. Whether anyone bites is what counts. So I basically just look at sold prices, and not asking prices. Because asking prices are like thumbs down on YT :P They don't mean anything :D

Quite an expensive deck now $250 is about the going rate now (2021).
Yikes. I sold one last year for a lot less than that!
i have a travellers one from1975 , what is it worth?
