My step brother and I would build carboard box cubby holes for us to compete in. He had one, I had one, both had areas to store accessories, and a link cable connecting the two boxes lol.
I cut a book page by page so I could put a Gameboy in it after seeing it done in Parker Lewis Can't Lose, and used it at school lol.
I liked motocross a lot, but I was good at Tetris. Back then during the Pump Up The Volume days, I'd play with a CB radio keyed in so other school kids could hear the 100k score music lol.
I was shocked to find in recent years I didn't know my two favorite NES games were on it.. Solomon's Club (key), and Burger Time.

My mom's friend had a gameboy with like 15 games, I was like 8, and the gameboy was already 11 years old at that point, but I still found it charming. There's a special vibe to playing antiquated machined like this.

Great overview - also good that you looked at these games in context to what expectations were of the time. The fact that you could have a portable system with interchangeable games that actually looked like video games vs. those LCD tiger handhelds was amazing. I had Tetris (of course), Mario Land, Tennis, and Castlevania. Loved them all - especially as the games cost significantly less vs. the regular Nintendo games at the time and could be played without a TV. People forget you had to share the TV back then too!

Tetris still holds up incredibly well. A perfect game for the Game Boy and I agree, I think having it as a pack-in was a major reason for its success.

I don't recall why but for whatever reason I never owned the original Game Boy, by '89 I was still playing my Game & Watch and Tiger Electronics (Yeah I know...) and leading into the 90's I had the battery sucking handheld known as the Game Gear.

My mom got a game boy for herself. We got to play it sometimes, i even went and borrowed some games from friends for me to play thinking i was going to play it, nope the game i borrowed was Alleyway, and she loved that one and Tetris. Doing the B type on level 9 i think it was and beating it and you got the space shuttle was always cool, my mom would get it and let me watch it, then when i started to play and it felt good to get it myself.

I still remember getting my Gameboy when it came out & I absolutely loved it! It was my first Nintendo console, up until then I mainly had Atari (800XL & the 5200). I had everyone of these games, except baseball & SO many more, & logged hundreds of hours on my Gameboy! Glad to see The Castlevania Adventure getting some love for once, it’s a tough game, but it doesn’t deserve all the criticism it gets, I loved it & the music is awesome! The GameBoy is one of the greatest & most underrated consoles of all time in my opinion…so many amazing games.

I had Tetris, Super Mario Land & Mario Baseball at the time this system released. My fav game out of those was Super Mario Land. Then later on I got F1 Race that came with the 4 player multi adapter. I used to play 2 of my other friends as a kid with the link cables. It was very revolutionary at the time to play your game with everyone having their own screen. Now we take that for granted as we can play online. I used to play the Tetris head to head like that to with link cables attached to both Gameboys.
Robocop, Lock & Chase, & Turtles Fall of the Foot Clan. These were the 7 games I had for the system when I was a kid. Now kids are spoiled. They get a video game system with probably 50+ games to it & still complaining if they don't have a best version of a console.
"Back in my day" If you had that Gameboy system, they weren't buying you a Game Gear which I found a lot better at the time than a Gameboy. That's how it was back then. Very limited console & games & you were just very happy to have the little games that you had.

The late 80's and early 90's were the best time to be a kid, the music, movies, cartoons, video games, in literally every way. I may be bias, but I'm also right! I remember my cousin getting his Game Boy and it was amazing. I recently bought the OG Game Boy along with Tetris and Super Mario Land. I forgot how addicting Tetris is.

I got a Game Boy with Tetris and Tennis for my 10th birthday in October 1990, then a couple of months later I got SuperMarioLand for Christmas. I'm still very fond of these three games.
One thing to remember about SML is that it was a lot of people's first Mario game, many more people played the Game Boy than the NES, especially outside of the US. To us it's the other Mario games that seem weird! Also, at that time there was no set Mario formula, even on the NES. SMB1, 2 and 3 are very different games.

I wasn't around for the original Game Boy, but a few years ago, my friend gave me one in great condition as a Christmas present because he knows how much I love retro stuff. I still take it with me on rare occasions with Tetris in it. It's a fantastic conversation starter.

Castlevania Adventure was awesome when it came out. I have very vivid memories of playing that on car rides with the giant magnifying glass screen attachment and light for those back home at night portions of the car ride. Of course it's nuked from orbit by Belmont's Revenge, but that came later. Having a Castlevania game on the go was incredible.

Never played any of these in 1989, as I didn't know anyone who had a Gameboy back then. But when one of my friends did get one a year or so later, I do remember playing a lot of Super Mario Land, Tetris, Baseball and TMNT: Fall of The Foot Clan. those were the four games he had, and they all blew me away. So naturally, I wanted my folks to get me one as well, Unfortunately, they never did.....

I remember my best friend had a Game Boy, and for some reason she sold it to me for peanuts. It was a steal because it included a carrying case, the bulky yet convenient rechargeable travel battery, Mario Land, Tetris, and the unfortunate NFL Football. I still count it a win.

A lot of these early games were great, but what's amazing is just how much of a leap the next versions were - Super Mario Land 2 is more Super Mario World than an NES clone, and Castlevania II is much smoother and brought back sub-weapons. It's incredible how much they got out of that little system!

I got my Game Boy for xmas in '94 and absolutely loved it. I took it everywhere. Tetris was great. Mario Land was cool but it pissed me off a lot. I like it much better as an adult now tho. Some of my favorites were Mario Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Star Stacker, Battle Arena Toshinden, and Asteroids & Missile Command. It wouldn't be until emulation that I would discover many more new favorites like Kirby's Block Ball, QIX, and Batman: Return of the Joker. I feel so fortunate to have been born in the age of portable gaming. My mom loved Tetris btw. I can't load up the rom without thinking of her.

Between handleds released in 1989 to the Early 1990's, Game Boy is the best. While it may have lacked color, the execution of the console was done very well. It just wasn't enough for the other handhelds released around that time to have color assuming that they can beat the Game Boy. Not even Bandai's WonderSwan could capitalize the success of Nintendo's Game Boy. Sure, Tetris was America's Launch Title and Europe too, but my favorite launch title for the Game Boy released in 1989 was Super Mario Land. It introduced Princess Daisy who was a very weird character in her her first appearance because most people were familiar with Princess Peach during that time Super Mario Land was released.

I was all on that Tetris. I got the Gameboy for Christmas in 91 I think I remember I got Super Mario Land 2 and Tetris. I played the mess out of those games.

I own Castlevania adventure as a kid and I could only get to like level three because like most Castlevania games it gets hard and because of the sluggish controls it feels like you're walking with a weight shackle to your foot the entire time you're playing the game but I still enjoyed it and it still had a lot of the things that made Castlevania fun

Great video! Its got to be Mario Land for me, such a great game. I only started playing it via emulation around 2 years back.

Gameboy was the first system that I bought with my own money. My dad was pretty frugal and I didn't get an NES till later than everyone else. Luckily my father's frugality meant we had rechargeable batteries for everything so I was set.

Loved me some Tetris, basically got the GB for this. Have since purchased it for every Nintendo handheld. Love it most on 3DSXL.
Ruined my fingers playing it, and have benefited from teh stacking habit from "The Tetris Effect".
    Good times.
