    I love my Sigma 50mm ART. It's fast, it's sharp and the bokeh is more than good enough for me.
    The built quality is actually quite good. No weather sealing though.

    I really like Kai, but this time he's just being a fanboy. I own this lens, I use it on my D800. It's not plastic - it's metal - I mean, come on! Bokeh is just beautiful, focus is quick, and yes, it's very very sharp, build quality is very high. For the price, I reckon is the best to buy. And if you have a big dslr body - you'll like the feel of a big lens.

    The build quality is superb, the performance is stellar, it outperforms in every measure of lens capability. I own one as do some of my colleagues and we are all thrilled. The people who continue to disparage it are likely fanboys, gear snobs, or the unfortunate who blew money on the uber ridiculous Otus. If you know what you are doing, the bokeh is fantastic. Utilize camera to subject distance, not just the lens. Bokeh is not just a factor of lens deisgn. Stop blaming the gear. I've seen plenty of side by side tests with the 50mm 1.2 where the bokeh is nearly indistinguishable.
    No offense, but this was a crap review. Not sure what's happening with standards there these days.

    • @jason24cf
      @jason24cf 10 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I'm with you on this, it's about sharpness and not having super creamy bokeh, and from what I seen the bokeh is good. I didn't see any test with a subject to lens distance test. Every shot looked like a point and shoot. Now for a portrait lens, I have seen other reviews and they all said the same thing, "its AMAZING and super sharp". Isn't that what we want from a portrait lens? With a camera like the D810 and this lens, I'm sure the images would be stellar! I'm getting this lens and I won't let one minor thing like "bokeh" keep me from purchasing a lens that will provide me razor sharp images.

      I was pretty suprised that he's ragging on the lens quality. I've got a 35 Art and these things feel and look really good. Bit strange..

    • @trevorpinnocky
      @trevorpinnocky 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Grant Kennedy Also, given the lens already weighs in at 815g and has a substantial amount of metal and glass inside, making the body out of metal would just be plain stupid. That is unless you'd like a 2.5lb lens.

    • @TheReptilehumon
      @TheReptilehumon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think you misunderstand the nuances of bokeh.
      Bokeh 'amount' is determined by distance from subject, aperture value and focal length. I do not believe this review made any comment about bokeh 'amount'. Bokeh amount should remain the same considering the specifications mentioned above are kept consistent. They should only vary to minor degrees determined by the 'accuracy' of the stated values. For example a 50mm lens may in fact be slightly longer or shorter from one manufacturer to another.
      What I understand from this review is that the 'quality' of the bokeh is substandard compared with other 50mm lens options. Bokeh 'quality' is determined by the lens design contrary to what you have suggested. Judging by these samples and others, I would tend to agree that the bokeh is substandard when compared to other 50mm lens options.
      Also to Jason24cf, I know of many portrait photographers who do not favour sharpness in a lens due to it exposing flaws which require more post-production. Everyone has their own techniques and preferences.

    • @trevorpinnocky
      @trevorpinnocky 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      TheReptilehumon I think the real issue here is that you don't really understand what you are talking about. You understand the basic concepts but I don't think you have a real grasp on there real world application. Yes bokeh is a fixed factor of optimal lens formulation. However by changing the subject to camera distance you change what is in focus. And as such the bokeh characteristics will in fact change. I'm talking about out influencing the background by controlling DOF. That's why photographers have legs. If you get close enough to the subject not only will you change DOF but you'll also get a more pleasing bokeh because the two are connected.
      You don't stand 3 meters away from your subject and complain about the bokeh. What you've essentially done is push the elements behind your subject closer to being on the same focal plane. Of course it will not be most attractive at that point. And frankly that's silly, IMO.
      The bottom line is that the Sigma is a lens which is highly tuned toward micro-contrast and sharpness. Bokeh is a natural compromise point in such a design. I have shot many many many 50mm lenses and saying that the Sigma is only average among them is a terrible misrepresentation of the truth.

  • @weed46
    @weed46 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I find this strange, since this lens has better bokeh than almost every 50-60mm prime lens except maybe for the 58mm 1.4 that has the best bokeh but is soft as hell for a 1400lens
    This has better bokeh than canon's 50mm 1.2 (when you step canon down to 1.4, since is too soft at 1.2) and nikkor 50mm 1.4

    What are you guys complaining about. He is doing a job. No one is perfect. I'm researching lenses and I wanted to know the Sharpness, vingetting, CA, Bokeh... He answered all of them. "One of the sharpest 50mm lenses", some vinetting but not horrible, basically no CA and the Bokeh is not the best. What more do you want? Stop complaining and give the video a thumbs up and thank him for his time.

    Just ordered this lens on the recommendation of a professional cinematographer friend. He calls it the best out there, especially for a grand.

    • @ManInTheBigHat
      @ManInTheBigHat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@busstation9818 : I also got the 50mm NikonG. I had a 50mm D already but I was getting veil glare and my friend pointed out I needed modern coating to help with the glare. Ken Rockwell doesn't appreciate the Sigma. He goes as far as calling it, "Not for professionals". It's too heavy for him and indistinguishable from a 50mm G. But shooting the G and the Sigma together I think the Sigma has a personality I like. Maybe it's the cost and weight and size and I'm being fooled. But it focuses faster and portraits have a ton of 'presence' with this Sigma. I think the Nikon G is going back to B&H. I also tried low light - a rare thing for me. This Sigma is crazy efficient with the light. It's amazing.

    So, despite your obvious preconceived negative attitude towards Sigma, this is a fairly good lens? I'm just asking, because with the exception of this review, maybe a handful others, and the the guy in the comment field who's opinion trumps all because he owns sooo many lenses, this lens scores immensely well in every review I've read or seen and awards are being thrown at it. Some say the bokeh is beyond, some say its okey, you say its crap.. The only negative aspect there is a general concensus on is the size..?

    • @s87343jim
      @s87343jim 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing about bokeh is that it's pretty subjective, its really depends on personal taste. For me, size and weight are the biggest issue for this lens, especially if you compare it to the Canon or Nikon's 50mm f1.4 or the Canon's f1.2L.
      However, it is just so good!

    My local store called and said they finally got one in Nikon mount. Cash in hand, I went fully prepared to buy it. I brought my current 50mm, the sigma 50mm f2.8 macro and took test shots to compare. First, just looking through the view finder, the 1.4A looked sharper. Took pics and compared. I found in every case, I preferred the rendering of the macro to the 1.4A. Asked to store owner, which pic do you prefer, she preferred all the ones taken with the macro also. When I told her, she was surprised and told me not to buy it then.. so I didn't... most reviewers say the bokeh is pretty, except Kai.. amazes me that they are all Wong and he is right, that almost never happens... I pick my lens purely based on bokeh profile... and thus one didn't have great bokeh.

  • @slothsarecool
    @slothsarecool 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    build quality feels way less cheap than a Nikkor, not sure what you dislike about it so much, Nikkors feel like junk to me personally, Zeiss tops both but Sigma is not bad. Also why talk about a "Walk around lense" when you're holding a D4s haha

  • @tobiasgoelzer
    @tobiasgoelzer 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sigma did exactly what most of the photographers wanted. They produced a lent, which is extremly sharp, so that every pixel peeper is satisfied. They made a lens for test chart photographers and 200% Zoomers - and that is what most of the photographers are at the moment… unfortunately, barely no one cares about bokeh or character in this times…

    I"ve never own a sigma DG art but it seems to be a great great lens. I am going for the Zeiss Milvus 50mm 1.4 for $300.00 more just because of the weather in Miami. I do a lots of photoshoot on the beach and don't mind shooting a manual lens. Both lenses are very sharp but have their downside - Zeiss not having auto focus - Sigma not weather sealed

  • @HertNiks
    @HertNiks 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why is this lens so big compared to the other one? I thought the 50mm marks that the glass part is 50mm from the censor, but on this one its more like 150mm from the censor. Wouldnt it make this lens a 150mm lens? Im confused.

  • @PeterbFree
    @PeterbFree 10 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    A review trying hard to be as negative as possible about a lens that is about as good as possible. Rather silly really. Sigma has done the Photography world a huge favour in pushing the standards up and the prices down. Even if you don't like them and never buy one, all brands will have to respond to what they are doing and everyone will benefit in the long run. Well done to Sigma!

  • @leojonkers3181
    @leojonkers3181 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can not be more right trevorpinnocky. I own the lens myself and the bokeh is great. Better then the bokeh of the Canon F1.2. I used to own that lens, like the the F1.4 and the F1.8. You can not use these lenses full open. Buy a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 macro if you want a cheap and small 50 mm lens.
    It is a pity that the movies of DigitalRev TV telling a lot of crap lately. I used to like the humor, but the essence is an honest review in the end. Kai is not sponsored by Sigma, I can not think of another reason.

  • @sush3450
    @sush3450 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I've always liked about drtv reviews is Kai doesn't feel the need to jump on the bandwagon of "oh its so sharp its the best lens ever!!!!"'mhe understands that there is more to an image than just its sharpness. He mentioned that the sharpness was amazing but bad bokeh can make an image less appealing and imho is just as important as sharpness. Kai understands that there has to be a balance and some people get so caught up on sharpness they forget about the quality of the overall image

    The bokeh isn't 200mm f/2 level- but then, the focal length is one of the most important DOF factors. The Sigma isn't cheap compared to any Canon/Nikon 50mm, but it beats them hands-down all over (build, sharpness etc.). It feels immensely well put together and I'd definitely recommend it over any 50mm bar the Zeisses

    All the doubting Thomas' can say whatever they want about Sigma. The fact is Sigma has increased the quality of their products as well as visibility. I owned the 50 1.4 (non-art) and used it for high school basketball in poorly lit gymnasiums. It performed much better than the Nikon 1.4 or 1.8G lenses. With that said, I don't feel $950 for a 50mm lens is worth it.

    If it's not bokehlicious enough for you, then I'd be more than happy to have it show up as a donation in my mailbox. :) I really want a prime lens for my 70D, and was going to buy the Canon 50mm f1.4, but they recently switched from instant rebates to mail in rebates, and I decided I'd wait until they fixed that. I hate having a hundred bucks sitting out there in limbo for 8-12 weeks.

    • @shulkman
      @shulkman 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I know... I wish I could have gone for a full frame, especially since I mainly do landscape photography. And yeah, I could go for 28mm or 35mm f1.4 prime, but again, cost comes into play. I try to work around the crop sensor issue by doing a lot of pano/multi photo work. I might take 4 photos, and merge them together into one final piece of work. Or, with panos, I'll take a bunch of photos. But, the thing I really want is good sharp glass. My kit lenses are dropping the ball on sharpness throughout the full depth of the photo.

    Interesting review to look at in 2024. I am wondering if those bold statements about build quality, bokeh, AF speed and sharpness are still holding up. The more time goes by, the more it seems that build quality is in fact way superior to most major brands - except Sony GM series, but hey this glass plays in a different price range. Also the bokeh is amongst the best ones - even the very best can be pointed to a lighting situation where it fails. I guess, the only negative feature of this lens is the size and weight, compared to other 50/1.4 FF AF lenses, although none of the smaller ones built for DSLRs are designed with an ultimate IQ objective. I have reviewed both Canon, Nikon, and Sony's 50/1.4 AF DSLR glasses and none of them is playing in the same IQ league. Ever since this was released the much newer MILC 50/1.4 AF glasses cought up, but mainly in terms of AF speed, IQ, size and weight, but this old glass is still worth considering.

    Sigma makes a leans that hands-down beats all others on nearly every objective metric (price included) and everyone rags on the only subjective thing left--bokeh quality.
    If people want to shoot inferior glass because of some faithful dedication to the big name brands, all the more power to them. This lens has been on backorder since it's release three months ago, and for good reason. Bravo Sigma.

    I would take a good copy of a sigma lens over some L series lenses.
    Build quality on the art line are pretty good to me.

      Mykey Brooks Their newer lenses (Art series) are better than older sigmas, of course. And sharper than Nikon and Canon lenses in the same aperture and distance
      The 24-70mm definitely goes to Tamron.

      how would you say the AF accuracy is with the 70D? I have a 70D myself and am looking to get this lens as well. Though I heard it can have focus problems.

    • @Stetch42
      @Stetch42 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sabo I would say its very accurate and fast. Best is to watch more videos about it. Yes a few 70D had some focus issues.

    hey sorry to ask this but what is the difference between art lens and the normal sigma lens on a fullframe?

    • @johnnguyen7587
      @johnnguyen7587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ART series is just the over priced version of their Convenience series.
      About your 'fullframe', lenses that are DG are for full frame, lenses that are DC are for APS-C sensors.

    • @leeway1331
      @leeway1331 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bum Head (beginner here) , what would u recommend that's similar to this lens due to its sharpness? And what lens is similar to it that is less than $500?

    • @johnnguyen7587
      @johnnguyen7587 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a Nikon guy so if you're using a Canon sorry! But I'd say a Nikkor DX 40mm f2.8G Micro, if you were to get a full frame, I'd say a 50mm f1.8G, another APS-C that is a Sigma and is the ART series is an 35mm f1.4 DC, which is barely under your $500 price tag.

    • @johnnguyen7587
      @johnnguyen7587 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are a Canon user, you could buy the Canon mount Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART

    Please do a review of the new sigma dp2 quattro!

  • @random12834
    @random12834 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Step One - buy Sony A7
    Step Two - Buy Fe 55mm 1,8
    Step Three - Enjoy the sharpness of the sigma with the bokeh of a zeiss, in a camera package that is lighter than the sigma alone
    Step four- ignore all the trolls saying that mirrorless is crap etc.

    • @andreika6681
      @andreika6681 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      4yrs later mirrorles is still crap to work with in low light, i've tried a7 mk2 - impossible to work in dim space, you won't see anyting in viewfinder, any dslr woud be just fine. i can surely take good pix in low light, but you can't WORK as you'd do with dslr

    You have got to do a video pointing out that Bokah issues you point out. I see blurry back ground, but you see doubling and all so many other things,. I only saw it on the first picture of the old man, I looked at the sign in the BG and the Kanji looked more like a doubled kanji offset, and blurred, but you have to look hard for what you call BAD bokah. HELP!

      it all depends on what u wanna do... there is no 1 size fits all lens. If u have nothing to begin with, a general purpose 18-70 ish wud not be a bad place to start imho.
