Thank you for this video. I was just gifted one of these laptops in 2024, but they took the memory and HD out. Also disconnected the keyboard and CDRom. I booted the device off of a USB key so I knew it worked before I picked up memory and an SSD for it. Thank you for showing me how to put it back together!
Thank you very much for this video! Glad it was straight to the point, no talking and just clearly showed exactly how to disassemble this specific model. I don’t think I would have figured out that I had to pop off the keyboard and CD drive to find more hidden screws without this video! 5 stars!
Just followed this to fit more ram and a ssd, easy enough to do but not as easy as my other laptops that simply had a compartment with a lid to remove! Thanks for the video.
wasn't as trivial as I thought it would be. 2 suggestions - 1, if you've never disconnected one of the newer data/ribbon cables that most of these laptops have, be sure to flip up the black locking mechanism first. I attempted to 'yank' out that keyboard cable and almost ruined it in the process. Only other suggestion is do pay attention to that DVD drive data cable. The cable and harness are attached to the rear cover that you will be lifting out (it's not so evident in this video) and as long as you make sure the sata connector is still in place and you feed the cable back into the rectangular slot when you re-assemble - that DVD drive should 'snap' right into it as snappy as it popped out of it.
F Dell for designing this POS so badly that it's nearly impossible to take apart - this video is actually an usually easy example, these things are usually even more difficult than shown here.
Very useful video, thanks a lot. It is amazing that I had to tear the whole laptop apart only to swap the hard disk. I guess this is how manufacturers are cutting costs these days. Everything is so cheaply made. Well, at least this Dell has a removable battery.
Just as in another video doing much the same thing, both videos are missing the dvd drive connector ribbon and the extreme hassle and lucky tweaking required to reconnect it. Is easy enough to pull the dvd drive out but in doing so you disconnect the cable that attaches to the drive. The ribbon for the connection comes out of that black rectangle spot to the right of the wlan chip wires. Mine was not permanently attached to the board for easy lineup and re-connection when the drive is reinserted. Mine would not connect and pushing the drive back in just moved the ribbon around. I had to take the cover off again and connect the drive manually and then carefully line up the drive and snap the cover back on top. Was not easy, took many tries and tantrums, and I still did not get the cover completely on perfectly. It is on, but not quite right. But the lid opens and closes and the drive works so far. So be careful people, this is way more of a hassle then this appears.
Remove the ribbon cable from the mother board, snap it in place on the bottom of the shell and gently feed the ribbon back through the top. Snap the bottom of the laptop together (gently). Plug your ribbon cable back into the mother board. Insert your DVD drive and lock into place with screws. It took me a minute and would be great if the video showed this step as I could not find it anywhere. Good luck.
All this pain just to change the HD or RAM... Absolutely ridiculous, after this pain I will recommend my customers to not buy Dell stuff. Also, most of their notebooks don't come with Gigabit LAN, which turns them into complete garbage.
@@maynardcortes1493yes, it is, any "normal" notebook you only have to remove one or two screws to remove a small cover and you have access memory and storage. It doesn't make any sense to have to remove keyboard and its flat cable for this

Hi sir, could you plz provide the exact model of this laptop. I had the same but lost I would like to get the same now. And it has rough surface at the top right?
I did this for my brothers laptop but I put the SSD into a caddy that replaced the DVD drive. I moved over the partitions for the Boot & C drive onto the SSD by using a bootable USB recovery drive I made with Macrium Relflect free software. I then booted using SSD drive and removed the old partitions with MiniTool Partition Magic and made a D drive partition with that extra space on the original HDD. The DVD drive is still usable as an external drive with a DVD SATA to USB connector I got off Ebay.
Thanks very much for this, I have since followed it to successfully replace a damaged HDD with a new SSD. I would never been able to have got the laptop open if I hadn't seen your video because of the hidden screws under the keyboard and the DVD drive. However, apart from the keyboard, I only needed to remove one other ribbon cable so I don't really understand why you undid them all. The only thing that wouldn't go back properly is the screw that goes near the middle of the bottom cover because it doesn't seem to engage with anything. Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be?
@@d.lawrencemiller5755 In the video from 0:11 when you look at left corner of the battery slot you can see metal of CD drive. I'm definitely not an expert, and I would strongly encourage you to do a bit more research. That being said, I have been looking into upgrading my laptop as well. I am going to answer everything for a Windows based operating system.
To answer your question:
In short...no. By this I mean that you do not need to format your laptop in a special way before swapping the HDD and the SSD.
Some things to be aware of:
*BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE DOING ANYTHING*
1) You will need a SATA to USB cable to transfer data from your HDD to your SSD. These are relatively cheap.
2) If you would like to keep all of your programs, program product keys, etc., it's best practice to buy an SSD that is AT LEAST as large as the partition that currently stores all of this information. *I am only confident of this last step for Windows 10 because I have upgraded a laptop from HDD to SSD with a clean install. This is the hardest of the methods, but only because of the amount of steps.*
4) If you just want to keep your files like Documents, Pictures, Music, etc. but no programs:
-- You will not need the SATA to USB cable; just move those files that you would like to keep to a flash drive or to some cloud based storage system like Google Drive or Dropbox.
-- Go to Microsoft's "Download Windows 10" website and select the option "Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC (click to show more or less information)". Download this on a flash drive of CD. You will need it for an install of Windows 10 on your SSD.
There are more steps than this, but my reply is already getting rather lengthy. The Microsoft website has the final steps listed there. This should put you on a good path to replacing your SSD.
