    Hello, Prof. Raja. Thanks very much. I hope you respond.
    If a writer from a previously colonised country praises the coloniser, what do we call them?
    Are there any poets or writers who praised colonialism at the expense of their native country?
    Writers like V.S Naipaul and salman rushdie or Khalid Hosseini are called neoorientalists?
    What do we call a poet or a writer with a double nationality who praised colonisers at the expense of his first native country??
    Thanks so much

      Thank you. I do not have any precise terms for it. People have sometimes used the term native informants. I do not use any such terms.

    What about reorientalism. It has a discourse behind it?

      I do not think the term is necessary but if you feel strongly about it, feel free to use it but first read Said carefully

    Great Video, Dr. Raja! I have a few contradictory/ additional points that will help us (re)think Neo-Orientalism as an addendum to Orientalism (like you say Neo-Orientalism has to be a part of a bigger discourse. Well Ali Behdad and Hamid Dabashi have already said what I just said about Neo-orientalism being an "addendum" to Orientalism!). Neo-Orientalism has a nature of its own, and it has incommensurate tropes (unlike Said's Orientalism) in different geopolitical locales. Neo-Orientalism is a living concern and is heavily under-theorized. It is now perpetuated by thinktanks, media, governmental institutions, and of course western academia. I recommend Asef Bayat's works for this!
    When it comes to writers, especially Indian and Pakistani writers, if they have a journalistic pretense of the entirety of Pakistan or India in their novels when selling to the western market, I would call that Neo-Orientalism. Of course, this is content-specific (and I have to read those novels before I comment further), but exoticizing holds specific nuances of representation, which I would then argue is easy for Western consumer culture to hold as mainstream Pakistani or Indian representation. That would then be Neo-Orientalism. I would like to discuss this more at length! This is of course my first book project! Again, this is a very informational space. Thank you for doing it!

      Thank you. As long as your project shows a clear understanding of Orientalism, you will be fine in defining a discussing it. My point was that simple pandering by diasporic authors to metropolitan audiences does not qualify as neo Orientalism as it can be covered under so many other registers and also under Orientalism itself.

    Respected Dr. Masood Raja, the description of Neo-Orientalism and Neo-Orientalist is lucid, clear, and concise in this video. I myself did my MS English from International Islamic University Islamabad. The theory that I applied to critique American Popular Fiction (Princess, Daughters of Arabia, and Desert Royal by Jean Sasson) and came up with shocking findings that how neo-orientalists have strong connections with their ancestors (classical-Orientalists). These Noe-Orientalists re-orientalise the orient through popular fiction, popular media, and films.
    Here I am still confused, people like Rushdie, Tariq Fateh, and many such types of people are backed and supported by the Orientalists' institutions and white supremacists groups and individuals. Won't such Pakistani writers be considered as Neo-Orientalist?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still maintain that while these authors do pander in the Postcolonial exotica, and if they do then it is still a form of orientalism. For it to be neo orientalism it has to have a corresponding discourse and knowledge power nexus. I highly recommend Aijaz Ahmad’s “In Theory”

      @@masoodraja Thanks. Since there is a lot of work done on this topic, it is a bit difficult to develop an argument. I am just looking for a unique argument so I was wondering whether I should look for media portrayals or literary productions? An argument related to 'radicalization' would be great if you could suggest some possibilities. If it is difficult to explain here, it is not a problem and thank you.

    Thank you Sir for these insights. I am always trying to make the difference between orientalism and new orientalism... most of the time I found that new orientalism deals with the Islamic world in particular whereas orientalism is not a religious representation of the orient is that true?

    • @masoodraja
      @masoodraja  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, for me Orientalism applies both to the Islamic as well as non Islamic part of the orient and can be expanded to cover any large discourse that creates a way of looking at a culture or region through a discursively produced lens. Please read the book carefully and you will notice that Islam is already included in it so there is no need to call it neo Orientalism. Please also try to watch my videos on the book.
