Note to self-keep bulbs and other potential bug-containing material out of my seed starting area. Another TH-camr mixes his potting and seed starting mixes with boiling water before using-kills all larva and eggs if there are any present.

Try Adding boiling water to seed starting mix and letting it cool down before planting seeds.
Also, repeat NEEM spray application in couple weeks. Good Luck!!
I use captain jacks on my house plants all the time as a preventative. I also have a dog no issues. Good luck wish you the best. Thrips are my nightmare!

Oh NOOOOO! I understand that immediate feeling of needing to get "them" gone. Chocolate always helps, definitely should keep some on hand for the season. Happy seed starting it will help you brain storm the situation!

This year I used hot boiling water on the potting mix before use, to prevent any bug damage. I think it works just fine. Only takes a little longer before u can use it, too hot. Last year I tried oven but it was more smelly and more messy.

@@julesz1979 A running boil. That is were the pot looks like a Hot Tub.Then pour it in, mix with a long stick cover it and let it sit 20 min. Then let it cool. Everything will be dead. If you get gnats, they are coming from someplace else.
You could also put soil in a microwave safe bowl, add some water, cover loosely with a lid and go full effect for 3-5 minutes on the microwave.
The soil should come out steaming. What not get cooked by the steam, gets microwaved

I did a little research and first of all, the Thrips could have come from the soil. Apparently larva over winter in the soil. So I don’t know could it have come from your potting and soil? Second I did a brief search Neem oil and it says that it’s most effective on young plants so that’s good news for your Lisianthus
I add boiling water to my seed starting mix. Right in my Jiffy bag (I place the bag in a plastic tub). Roll the top and place a brick on it for 20 minutes. then I open it up and let it cool (to warm) and start my seeds. I have had fantastic results. It's my routine now. Also if they jump, fly or crawl they could come inside on you or the dog. Hitching a ride.
I read that it also could come on damp laundry? I guess they’re attracted to moisture

Yes they can also come in on anything you are overwintering that you brought in from outside. That’s usually where I get my problems. I just treat the soil of anything I bring in from outside with Bonide Systemic Houseplant Insect control. Be prepared though, those little grubs come right to the top of the soil and die! It’s so satisfying!
Captain Jacks Deadbug Dust works really well on thrips. Does not hurt the plants and washes off easily later.
I have no thrips tips, sorry, but...get the magnifying glass app on your phone to help you see the itty bitties. It's amazing for bug scouting!
Oh lady, I feel your pain.. I lost half my ranunculus last week, I just stood in the greenhouse wanting to cry. I couldn’t even bear to look at them. ( fungus rot)

I have them also. I think they are coming from the seed potting mix. I have been spraying with alcohol.
Omg so sad. I had problems with spider mytes in my garden , I use a combination of naturals foliage sprays in rotations throughout the week. Lavender oil, rosemary oil and neem oil. 10 drops per gallon with organic soap nonsented for emulsification. Keep up the sprays even if you have no sings !! the scent of thoses products keeps pests away but dosent hurt your plants. Dont give up and keep spraying steady in vegetative stage!! you can do it

Did you let the seedlings dry a bit before putting back under lights? In my experience with neem oil, I spray very early before sun comes up or late in afternoon. The oil will burn the leaves if you spray in bright sunshine, but I don't know how it will affect them under bright lights. BTW I know of someone who released the lacewings inside for her houseplant pest problem! DO IT!! SAVE THE LISIANTHUS!!!
I haven’t read all the comments, but when my large collection of African violets had thrips; I finely sprayed rubbing alcohol all over the area, but not on the plants. I also put cotton balls soaked in rubbing alcohol around my plants here and there. It works! This also works with little fruit flies. Buy the alcohol at the dollar store. I have also heard thrips come from potting soil.

Try using diatomaceous earth on the soil as well. I used it along with the mosquito bits on the soil and in the water for my house plants and it is working very well.
Diatomaceous earth washes away and loses its sticky properties when wet.

It is safe to use Captain Jacks dust on your corms I believe. It is listed safe for corm vegetables. I would dust the entire rooms plants on the porch as soon as it is warm enough and your corms as well.
When you were mentioning how your glads had thrips last summer and then you saved the corms
in your basement, I had concerns. That's definitely where they came from and if they are active
still on those corms, you need to get them out of there. And move the bags of new corms to
somewhere else entirely.
You might just chuck out the last year's corms.
When I was in high school I planted glads and they had mega thrips! It was so awful. The flowers
and stems were badly damaged. Where did they come from? Were the corms infected?
Really check out your new corms and maybe spray them with the deadbug stuff. Put them in the
garage or something.
Okay so you figured it out. But talk about a time suck side track! Glad you still have energy to
continue on the tasks you had lined up for the day.

That neem oil is wonderful stuff that’s all I know. Nasty thrips 👊🏼. Treat everything is fine and a good idea. Spray the gladioli too. I just remembered .. you have to keep the néem away from bees so morning or evening is a good time 👍🏼

Nicole so sorry you are having pest problems. I absolutely love your determination ro figure out a solution, but also giving yourself a few minutes to fall apart and then get back to it. Thats life we have to be able to get back to it no matter what. You cracked me up when you were looking at the plants and telling us how many thrips you killed and if need be were going to go thru each plant and get the rest of them. Cracked me up, thats the way I am with Japanese Beetles. I live in California and I dont get them nearly as much as some areas of the country. However I invested in badminton rackets last year to hit them out of my plants and the air when they start to appear in the summer. They destroy my sunflowers, roses and zinnias. My husband cracks up at me, but I cannot use any pesticides in my garden. I hope you give us an update. Love your channel❤
Put your gladiolus in totes with lids. And keep an eye on using neem oil close to grow lights!

I haven't done this before, but I agree, I would heavily dust all of the bulbs, corms, and tubers with diatomaceous earth. I've been subscribed and loving all of your videos for almost a year! Finally joined today. Good luck!
I’m so sorry about your thrip situation, I just found a bunch of aphids on my new pepper plants that’s haven’t been exposed to anything they’ve been in my house around no bulbs or anything so I researched and Gary from rusted garden suggest using boiling water for your potting soil I’m going to give that a try because I truly believe they came from the potting soil and the warm temps from lights wakes them up so maybe you could give that a try😍 best wishes 😍😍😍
Those seedlings you grow look amazing! I have a big learning curve with flowers, tomatoes and peppers are so much easier!
The amount of emotional labor going into these baby plants should be factored into the cost per stem. Fingers crossed your efforts will resolve the issue quickly.

Wanted to add another possible treatment of just read about: cinnamon - 2 tbsp to 1 litre. Recommendation was boil water with cinnamon sticks, strain, cool, spray all areas. Many ppl continued spraying for 2-3 days but all seemed to have noticed almost immediate thrips relief.
We had some fungus gnats, but i used peroxide solution. Very sorry to read that because that can be difficult. Good luck and prayers for a successful garden. 🕊🙏
Lacewings & ladybugs! It works great! They’ll stay as long as the thrips are there. Even though you’ve sprayed, I would still order some or maybe you’re local nursery has them. Good luck!🙏🏼

Get those bulbs spread out flat on a tarp or sheet and dust them with DE. But JUST in case it was the soil, I've been taking Gary P's advice and pour boiling water over soil before using. So far no critters 😎
Argh! I'm so sorry!!! I have seedlings going and plans for a bunch more and I found aphids on my tiny seedlings!! I was so bummed. I did a lot of removal and bought some diatomaceous earth and I'm treating them with that and insect soap. Praying they last until I can get them out. I'm in zone 4, too.

You got it covered. Keep watching those awesome lizzies and add them to your Neem spray rotation when they are larger. Put those glads and dahlias in a tote to keep the thrips controlled and open the lid to let fresh air in every other day. If you see thrips fly out then you know where they are coming from.

Hey girl. You need to get the yellow sticky cards like they use in greenhouses. Bugs stick to them. So you can quickly see if you have any bugs and what kind they are. It will also help you know exactly where the bugs are in your basement.
I have them on every shelf!
Keep a few sundew plants on the seed shelves. A carnivorous plant that works just like glue traps and attracts pest away from the other plants.
Not a quick fix but beneficial for future endeavors.

Maybe you should get some plastic totes with lids to sequester the bulbs so if that’s where they are coming from at least they will be contained.
Neem oil is very effective and very safe. Spray every couple weeks. I would mix up a 5 gal bucket and dunk your bulbs in it. Put them in a mesh bag.
Im so sorry about the thrips. I realize I’m a year behind but I’m in suspense as to what’s gonna happen w the buggies. PS, again-I’m telling you: we are the same! I love love love KitKat bars and the mocha is to die for!
Every year of gardening is learning something new. On the bright side, at least you noticed it right after you pinched the sweet peas. And your lisianthus are beautiful. Wasn’t this the ‘3rd time is a charm’? A small setback but hopefully caught early enough that the seedlings will recover. Keep your chin up. :)

Get predators. Best long time solution.
Use the neem and/or diatomaceous eart on tubers. Let the potting soil pass a couple minutes on full effect in the micro and cool down before using.

I think I plan to cover my gladiolus with diatomaceous earth in the fall when I bring them inside. And leave them in my garage where it's cold. Apparently they can't survive if they are in 4 degree Celsius for 8 or 10 weeks.

Oh schneikes! Can you quarantine the corms and tubers? Maybe in your garage? I’ve used the neem indoors which works well on some plants, just experiment first. Can you put your sweet peas outside in a protected place where they will thrive but will kill the thrips?
Oh my, I feel so bad for you, I know it must feel overwhelming. You need to make an emergency call to Dr A. for advice. Man when it rains it pours, glad you head didn't hurt for too long. Can you move trays to that hoop area and cover them with a heavier frost cloth.??
Hang in there, you’ll get the upper hand for sure! I’d move those bulbs to another location in the basement for starters and maybe hang that shower curtain across the treated rack to give a physical barrier
My husband's grandmother used to soak her glad corms in the spring and fall -- -- hang in there -- your seeds are strong and will make it.
