- Alright guys! This video might be a bit of a flash back, as we had filmed a day in the life that day but I wanted to make this highschool talk into its own video as I thought you guys may want to hear my entrepreneurial journey and why even some of the toughest times in your career or life will make you so much stronger and smarter going forward! I really do believe there is no better way to learn and become a business owner than by just getting out there and doing it! Experience is the best schooling you can get so don't be afraid to get out there and make mistakes because they will only make you stronger in the end!
I just want to thank Sutherland Secondary School and YELL for having me speak to this amazing group of students about entrepreneurship.
I wish you all the best and please ask me any questions you may have in the comments below!!

I'm an interior designer based in Montreal, I've just started my own business, and what a daunting experience it's been so far! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us, I really needed to hear every word you said. I'm so glad that I stumbled on your channel a few days ago, been binge-watching your videos since!
I'm in my final year of studying interior design, I just discovered you today and honestly I'm so in awe. It's so great watching the process in 'real life' instead of doing it in a classroom environment. You're giving me all sorts of inspiration, you're incredible! Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
I'm going to BCIT for interior design next semester, and I am so lucky to have found a local role model to learn insights of the industry from. You're a powerful boss lady, and it was so inspiring to hear your personal story of the failure you overcame. Thank you so much for your TH-cam channel, and I hope you don't stop making videos anytime soon!! It really helps me stay positive.
Hi Jessie. Yay! I'm so happy to hear that my videos help you stay positive... good luck with your training at BCIT! xK
Karin,
You’re candor is so refreshing. Thank you for inspiring me. I have just finished my Interior Design licensing and am learning a lot from you! I appreciate you telling your story. I’m sure it’s difficult, but really lets others know that failure is nothing to be ashamed of.
You are really my soul and inspiration. I switched my career from having a culinary degree to now enrolling in a bachelor's degree in interior design. Seeing you work and grind, makes me want to work even harder, so I can be as strong and Independent as you. Please keep doing 2 videos a week! I love you guys!!
Nicole Bethune Hi Nicole - Awe, you are so sweet. I will definitely pass on your comment to my team! I’m also so happy to hear that you’re feeling inspired to work hard. That’s the only way that you’re going to get what you want!! Congratulations on making the career switch, I wish you all the success in the world. ❤️
Hope to see you around here for more again soon! xK 💕
Karin, you are such an inspiration and I love that you tell it like it is!
So many people go into business without realizing that mistakes, stumbles, falls will happen and you just have to learn from them and keep on going.
Mistakes are what makes us stronger if you let them and grow from them.
I’m proud of you and keep kicking butt girl!
:)
I applaud your honesty and insight Karin!!!
After a year of running my interior design business on the side, from my home, I'm quitting my commercial design day job and I just signed the lease on my first studio. And I have been absolutely panicking. I've been marathoning your videos tonight, and it's helped ground me so much, and this video was exactly what I needed to hear tonight. :)
I confirm : Entrepreneur is Up and Down and between success…thank you for these confidences.
Laëtitia Finel It’s true, it’s incredibly up and down!! Sometimes that can be exhilarating and sometime it can be crippling!! Thanks for watching this video. 🙏🏼❤️
That’s how I’m learning. I wasn’t formally educated in interior design, yet I’m working at a design firm in New York, involved in CAD work and renders, and I’m just taking supplementary classes as I go along and working hard. Doing is the best education.
Hi Karin. Amazing video, one of my favorites for sure! :) Congratulations for the courage to expose your "failures", and not being the person who only show us a glamorous and perfect life!! And congrats on the 4000 subscribers! Maria.
Maria S Hi Maria! Thanks so much for watching this video and for your comment. It’s true - success doesn’t happen without failure, and I’m so happy to hear that failure resonated with you. Especially because sharing it can make me feel really vulnerable! Thanks also for the congratulations - I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for people like you! ❤️
Wow! It's so great that you've shared this with us! It really shows how strong you are, and the progression you've had is so inspiring.
m1nt Hi! Thanks so much for watching this video. I’m so happy to hear that you found it inspiring. Thank you so much! 🙏🏼❤️
Thank you for sharing your biggest failure with us. It's nice to see the other side of business and know that you can get through even the toughest times and also that you're not always going to hit it out of the park the first time and that's ok.
Star D Hi Star! Totally! The road to business success is ridden with failure. I think it’s important that Young business people understand that, because the first time you start a business, the likelihood of hitting it out of the part is slim! Thanks so much for watching this video :) ❤️
This is the best advice I’ve ever received. The motivation you give in your videos truly help my journey in interiors and I appreciate all your videos so much! Thank you!
Thank you Karin for this video...my story is so similar to your...a own business with a partner and ending with the business and the relationship...i understood every word you said, the financial and emotional struggle...i still not succedd but i am on the right way. :) i admire you even more!
Micaela Faria Hi Micaela! I’m so happy that you watched my video and that you could relate to it! It’s true, owning a business with a partner is not easy...!
Thanks so much for watching and for commenting on my video. 🙏🏼❤️
Love your story and advice, im in the same industry as you and my journey is similar to yours, you have to go through the tough times growing a business , keeping your eye on the prize keeps you focused. Keep up the good work x
thank you so much for sharing, I get moments of weakness when I fail and I know how hard it can be to convince ourselves that its a positive thing, even though in retrospect we know how valuable it is. I think you are amazing . lots of love and positive vibes.
Karen Carcenac Hi Karen! So nice to hear from you and thank you so much for watching my content.
It’s true, failing can feel so difficult in the moment, especially because in the moment it’s hard to see how everything is going to work out. Failing is such an important part of success though, so if you feel like you’re failing a lot, TRUST ME, you’re probably succeeding a lot too!
Thanks again for watching and hope to hear from you again soon. :) xK ❤️
I find your videos really helpful, even though I'm in tech. The things you talk about are so relevant.
I just discovered your TH-cam and honestly I am so glad i did! I am looking to make a jump to interior design and to go back to school for it. It’s good to see the side of it that not many talk about!! Also, you’re a badass- overcoming that failure must have been tough, but you did it!!
A huge Thank you all the way from Texas!
Wow, your back story is incredible. You really are incredibly inspirational & proof of the power of persistence. Props to you. #girlboss 💓
That was such an honor! I'm sure student's and viewers learned alot. I did!! Thank you kindly for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving 😊
Cynthia Rodriguez Happy Thanksgiving Cynthia. Thanks again for watching this video!!
I truly enjoyed watching this video. I found your Channel about a week ago. The first video was intriguing, so I kept going back to your channel. In the past week, I've watched several videos and I appreciate your take on things. You are a very smart interior designer, a very talented interior designer, your dog is absolutely precious, and your team seems to be somewhat like a family to you. I appreciate that.So Far, I have found myself wondering why I haven't made more effort towards getting to where I want to be. This video was inspiring to me. Your story, although unfortunate, has brought you so much maturity in the entrepreneurship.. that I do not see in other entrepreneurs. Experience tends to really mature human being in many different levels other than their personality. All this to say, I became a subscriber after your first video because I saw something. Glad I did. :)
I watched everything till this one. But I can’t even tell you how much I needed to listen to this. Thank you
Hi Karin! I absolutely LOVE you videos. I love how open you are with sharing your journey and struggles. A lot of designers won't share this type of info and I think thats ones of the major issues in our field. No one really shares and we all do our own thing. I wanted to ask a question in hopes that I can make it on to your next Q & A video ; ). Which method of charging do you find the most effective (hourly, flat fee, etc) and why? If you could give us some examples of your experience with these methods that would be awesome! Thanks again and I can wait for the next video!
Hi! Thanks so much for watching my content. I'm so happy to hear that you're loving my videos. I'll definitely try to get your question into my next Q&A - we shoot it tomorrow! xK
I'm starting my first digital media company and i watch your videos because your so real, you understand what it means to really fail and get back up, I have watched so many CEO startup vlogs but its something about yours that gravitates to me. and i would just like to tell you thank you!!! and remember the name....... Francois Yarsiah
Love you for this! Happy thanksgiving! This is so inspiring to my soul. So grateful for your efforts!
Lala Ivy Fitness Awe. Thanks so much Lala! Hope you’re doing awesome! ❤️
Hands down best vlogger.
moving from SketchUp (I think that is what i saw you using previously) to Revit is a big jump. There is so many panels and options in Revit to learn and navigate through. Your talented team will get there.
Hy Karin. I have been following you since just a couple of months and bingeing on all your media. But this video really moved me because i went through a similar experience and while you are telling your story i feel the same fear, the sleepless nights, the nightmare. But as you i became a better entrepreneur and person. Thks for sharing. Btw english is not my mother tongue so there migjht be some mistakes.
Excellent talk for the students and honest information is extremely helpful to all who hear it.
Hi Karin,
I didn't get a chance to say hi at the Divine Flooring party but hope to run into you again soon to introduce myself! Love your work and really enjoy the content on your TH-cam channel! All the best!
-Anna
Aners1 Hi Anna! I wish you came by and said hi!! If you see me again I would love it if you did! Thanks so much for watching my content. 🙏🏼❤️
Thank you for this video! I do love your entrepreneurship talks, haven’t you considered starting a podcast? Lots of love from Europe. 🍀🍀🍀
Veronika Hejná Hi Veronica! Thanks for watching my video. Yes, I have considered starting a podcast... I’ve considered turning my “Cocktail Conversation” series into a podcast - what do you think about that idea? ❤️ Much love from Canada!
Yay! Please do that! ☺️ 💙
Wow this is so inspiring! Thank you ❤ fan from the Philippines!!

This is really valuable information. I love your contents. May i ask which institutions did you get your training from please ? I thinking of taking an online training course for interior design,
How did you search clients for those early days after open the id firm
Andreas Budiman Sastrawijaya Hi Andreas. Thanks for your questions. It’s a long answer so I’ll try to save it for a Q&A video! ❤️
Thanks!
Wow! Yours is Thai restaurant? I'm Thai. I like your video so much :D
You are my motivators.....
I love this video Thank you
People are not watching how you fall down, they're watching how you get back up.
Hi Karin! Did you work for a company before? Or you did start on your own immediately?
Can we get some examples of when you failed? I hope to be an entrepreneur one day and just want an example of what problems I can face.
Failure...=Fail...First Attempt In Learning
Unfortunately some of us will have to do it the hard way because most designers aren't like you. They're not willing to give those with little to no real world experiences a chance. Companies in the Philadelphia area want their interns to have 1 to 2 years design experience not including school work. You have to know someone to get a foot in the door smh
