First week of December Zaluzhny told the Americans he needed 17 million shells and 400 Billion dollars to win this war. A week later Zelensky admits to being asked for 500,000 new recruits.
America has run out of shells and now patriot missiles also. They and other allies are extremely reluctant to give Ukraine sufficient further tanks and aeroplanes.
Kiel institute donation tracker says total worldwide donations to Ukraine (financial, humanitarian and military) total 250 billion since Jan 2022. Now they want double that just for military.
Half a million recruits would be two years worth of the male population of Ukraine. This makes no allowance for essential workers or those unfitted for war. There are no queues at the recruiting centres.
But Zelensky has written into law that it must happen.
Not going to happen is it?
And what would they win if by some miracle they did drive Russia out? A vassal nation with law made by the EU with its land and industry sold to western multinationals and likely re-populated with the new European citizens. What does any of this give to the ordinary Ukrainian working family?

Nobody in Russia is talking about a ceasefire. There are two main options for Russia, first one is to defeat Ukrainian army or the second one is to make a peace deal on the Russian terms.

Zelensky CANNOT accept a peace deal, the ultra-nationalists won´t allow it. In 2019, after he was elected, he travelled to the front and was filmed talking to an Azov commander. Zelensky puffed his chest, ordering the Azov to pull out, and the guy kept smirking, saying no. The next day Azov issued a death threat to Zelensky. They told him he would hang from a tree outside the Palace, should he negotiate with the russians. A chief Ukrainian negotiator who was negotiating for a cease fire and peace deal was assassinated in broad day light in Kiev, by the SBU. I´m sorry, his name escapes me, but all this can be fact checked.
Point being, the ultra-nationalists (if i say the N word this comment will be banned, but that´s what they are) control all levels of government. They won´t sign a peace deal, unless NATO cuts all support and closes the money tap. So Ukraine is on track to losing another half a million dead, before they come to their senses...

The question is irrelevant as the Kiev constitution forbids any negotiations with Russia. Also the empire wants to fight to the last Ukrainian, and there still are a lot of the Galicians left, who enjoy the fight. Also we are making big bucks from this in our establishment. We certainly want the war to go on, as all our politicians confirm. Borrell even wants Total War, and we still are a long way off from that. All our leaders in the empire want this to be a good hard fight. Understandable as we will get whatever is left for free and we have enough people to feed anyway.

Soldiers can be very dense when it comes to geopolitics. That's because they are trained - brainwashed, really - to follow orders. Having an enemy is necessary for soldiers, because otherwise - what is the purpose of a soldier? That's without including another, different group - the arselickers, who have pursued their distasteful and unhealthy activity to climb the slippery ladder of promotion. I suspect that Milley and Petraeus fall into this latter group. So, listening to senior British and American military people talking rubbish about Ukraine and similar geopolitical matters is often worse than unhelpful - it can be completely misleading.

It's quite plain that neither side can break through but Ukraine are not yet at the height of their powers from the initial year and a half of Nato support and we are now at what might turn out to be the low point of western doubt. If Trump is not elected or if the Germans get frightened of a rampant Russia there might well be a swing back in favour of Ukraine. This is as much as Russia are going to get-they would be taking a serious risk by not recognising it.

Russia won" seems now to have become the ground bass of discussion. The question has moved on to : how can Zelensky ie. Washington DC get into real negotiations without looking really stupid, and in Biden's case, getting blown away in the November Presidential Election? Needs must. There are some inventive people in DC and in Whitehall, and doubtless a magic formula will be found. Watch this space. I think by April or before, the magic formula will be in the test tube.

The combined economies of the 30 countries that make up NATO was $40.1 trillion in 2020, while Russia’s GDP was $1.7 trillion in the same year. This means that the combined economies of the NATO countries are 23.5 times larger than Russia’s economy. We've got this folks, easily.

    • @jamesgornall5731
      @jamesgornall5731 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Is this a serious comment? If so, you're experiencing a common misconception; those numbers don't translate directly to military production. They don't even translate to the potential for military production. Otherwise, we could say, " Taiwan? Haha! $850 billion GDP? It's OK, we got this, UK is sitting pretty with 3 trillion... " well, why then don't we have world leading semiconductor fabrication and design plants? Why do we require Taiwanese semiconductors for the smartphones and the other computing devices we use? Can't we just whip one up? Well, maybe, it might take 30 years of heavy government investment with very little payoff in anything but the long-term...and no guarantees because by then Taiwan would be 30 years down the line itself...which is why China is importing so much chip manufacturing equipment itself, to sprint to where Taiwan was 10 years ago (and that would still be a great result for the PRC). Therefore, no, it doesn't just translate from €$¥₩ or £ directly into bullets and bombs, it takes time and lots of work to get there. Therein lies another big problem; for a war requiring lots of items, low-margin items a defence company doesn't want to waste time and effort making thanks to such poor returns; those things like bullets, standard HE artillery shells, gun barrels, and so on, high-volume low-margin items...it doesn't want to do that. Rather, it wants to concentrate on other areas, making high-tech, AI powered doodads which sound great on paper and cost a fortune whether they work or not, locking the UK government into procurement for decades to come...the defence industry really has no interest in expanding production of items which it normally makes in modest numbers for domestic consumption only. For them, the idea of moving valuable human resources and expensive capital into "low-tech" products is insane, and they would also ask what happens when this war ends, perhaps without much warning? Would it be left to mothball all that effort and redeploy or even make redundant all the additional staff they would have to take on? The only way it could happen is with the entire effort underwritten by the government, for decades, where we might end up with huge stockpiles of now-useless shells, bullets, bombs, etc.
Realistically, the above is unfeasible, as we've seen in the USA, where increases in munitions production have been commensurate with the situation I've outlined above... nobody wants billions in extra capacity on-hand for someone else's war. It isn't profitable, and it distracts from national defence priorities, strategies. The lukewarm response by the defence industry in the USA should give the politicians much pause; they talk a lot but their partners who do the actual work are saying, "nope".
More simply put, its a lot easier to be enthusiastic about building bombs and bullets when it's your kids, your siblings who might be the ones suffering should these things not be available. This is what we're seeing in Russia, where people have loved ones fighting. In such situations, thoughts of costs, of deficit spending and borrowing go by the wayside until the conflict is won. We would see the same if we were at war, as would the USA, but we aren't, thank God. Until then, defence is private industry and all the promises of $$$$$$ don't mean anything to them when policy could do a 180 with any new government, or if events on the ground overtake us. Seriously, why do you think production is only increasing very modestly?

The birth of Stalin II, the dictator of the 21st century, who uses lies and violence to an unprecedented degree and is obsessed with paranoia.
Putin has shut down almost all independent media outlets and has had anti-war protesters arrested by the thousands. General media outlets face up to 15 years in prison if they write articles critical of the authorities. It is clear that the invasion of Ukraine was a fatal blunder.
The reputation of the Russian military as a formidable force has been shattered, exposing its tactical inferiority to smaller but highly motivated opponents.
In less than a month, the Russians lost a great deal of equipment and suffered thousands of casualties.
The casualties in two weeks approach the total number of soldiers the U.S. has lost in Iraq since the 2003 invasion.Financially, the Russian economy is far below the size of the Soviet Union's. The question is how long the war can continue. And even if peace is achieved
