Russia's Putin: The US is parking missiles "on the porch of our house"

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Sky News that the US and NATO are expanding onto Russia's borders - and not the other way around.
    At his traditional end of year news conference, Mr Putin answered questions from the world's media. And he told Sky News' Russia Correspondent Diana Magnay that his country wasn't threatening anybody and that he didn't want conflict in Ukraine. But he said the ball "is in the West's court".

      @joan s: Perhaps that was why he sounded so terse, he felt like everyone should already be aware of Russia's position on the Ukraine-NATO thing. What he missed was that the message had not been passed on to ordinary people in the West, who were being groomed by their own governments and media to be in a state of ignorance, and thus more easily whipped into compliant rage when Russia eventually felt forced into a military response.

      Quite so, as legal as the USA basing missiles in Turkey
      The USA removed these when the Russians removed their missiles from Cuba. A tit for tat deal.

      But to date, we are the only nation to ever use nukes. We began the nuclear arms race in earnest with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And since then, every nation with the capacity to do so - has begun to develop nuclear weapons.

      Certainly reminiscent of the Cuba missile crisis but remember that the Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba in response to the US placing missiles in Turkey which is on Russia's doorsteps and would allow for no warning of an attack on Moscow. Also, the Cuba missile crisis was ended by the US agreeing to pull out the missiles from Turkey. The Soviet Union got what they wanted from that crisis and it was the US that blinked.
      The allusion to the missile crisis is just to distract from whatever his goals may be. There are no missiles going into the Ukraine other than the Russian missiles that shot down the Malaysian air liner and it's just that the Ukraine wants to join NATO which would've made the green soldiers activities in Crimea difficult to do without NATO opposition. Even the concern of the Ukraine joining NATO is superfluous as Turkey is a member of NATO and on Russia's door step, having Ukraine join would be little different. Putin just wants his citizens to blame everything on the US.

      @Shaolin Style agreed. I'm not saying I endorse or agree with what Putin has done, and I'm not saying I like him. What I'm trying to convey here is he set very clear boundaries based on historical prescedent for how Russia has security concerns to the west, NATO, UK, EU and my nation, America, chose to ignore those boundaries. I'm frustrated that my Congress, Executive branch and state department don't seem to realize the cold war ended decades ago, and that they seem to think we are the only nation worthy of a sphere of influence. Russia was never going to tolerate the West intruding into their part of the world, just like I wouldn't tolerate Russia putting missles in Mexico or Canada.

NATO is not a pact of mutual attack, it is of *mutual defence.* If Putin is threatened by that then it suggests he is threatened by *defence,* in other words he has an eye on attacking nations not under it’s banner and fears losing out on the profits from doing so.

      Nato expansion is bs excuse for Putin. Putin wants Ukraine. It was never about Nato. It was about Putin's ego and Putin's legacy. Ukraine is not Nato member, Ukraine has no nukes, Ukraine had no chance to join. It is Russia which keeps expanding west by invading its neighbours. Putin can invade non Nato neighbours only. All the rest is bs. Russia loves annexing just because it can. What kind of bad neighbour USA would have to be to make Mexico or Canada want to join Russia in any knd of alliance? If Russia was a good neighbour, there would be no need to join Nato to be secured. It does not matter what West did or did not do. It is Russia which invaded Ukraine to annex it, not the opposite.

    • @dmitriyvet9893
      @dmitriyvet9893 ปีที่แล้ว

      European politicians associate Putin with Russia. They directly say that the problem is not with Putin, the problem is with Russia as a country. Putin in their eyes is the personification of a strong Russia, so they hate him, and, for example, Yeltsin was the personification of a weak Russia, so everyone in Europe loved him, and Bill Clinton approvingly patted him on the shoulder. The West (Europe and America) has always hated and despised (and feared in their hearts, seeing it as a threat) Russia, and this has always been the case, for hundreds of years. The reason is that Russia simply has a different culture, religion, values, everyday life, food, attitude towards people than in Europe. And this cultural and civilizational gap is very large. Therefore, Europe for centuries tried to somehow weaken, and ideally destroy Russia. Both Napoleon and Hitler tried to do this. There is even a proverb in Russia: "What is good for a Russian is death for a German."

Its always okay for the west invade another country under the pretext of security but its not okay for other like Russia to do so. Iraq will be the best example. US invaded Iraq under a fall pretext of WMD which until now no WMD has been found and the rest of the puppets like Germany, France and etc are okay with it. BUT when Russia wants to defend itself from the threat of Nato expansion, suddenly everyone of them running foaming in the mouth shouting for sanctions.
