5 Things That Aged Strangely In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

- Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door has aged incredibly well. It's a unique take on turn based RPGs that offers an experience that really isn't affected by hardware. WITH THAT SAID there are definitely some aspects of the game that show this game did, in fact, come out in 2004
First time making a list video. Hope it's ok!

Nothing will ever age as horribly as Paper Mario 64 have a character name Twink
Personally I think there should be MORE Twinks in Paper Mario games
My favorite thing about Luigi is that three of his partners are only traveling with him because...
1: They want revenge against Luigi.
2: They are owed money by Luigi.
and 3: They want to minimize future harm done by Luigi.
Look, Luigi is a menace to society and must be stopped. Also, HI NERDBIRD
@@BubbleRift To be fair, Luigi "Does Absolutely Nothing"-ings his way into coming in clutch in Origami King... maybe he _learned_ from his misadventures with the Compass?
@@WackoMcGoose It is weird to see Luigi slowly becoming slightly more competent. It would explain things!
When characters and items from 3d Mario titles were in the spinoffs, it felt like the 3d Mario games defined that generation of Mario. Now, Mario odyssey feels forgotten because Nintendo never used most of the characters or themes from that game. Odyssey didn't feel like it created a new generation of Mario.
EXACTLY! I should have said that. TTYD gave Sunshine more life. Odyssey was a great game, it's almost bizarre that it's like in it's own little box away from everything else
I wish the worlds and characters from Wario Land games were used more. Heck, I wish the Wario Land series would come back in general
@@gooeydude574 bro. I get irrationally angry every time I remember how cool the Wario Land games were lol I can't believe Nintendo just moved on from them
There are GBA references with the aforementioned Toad Kid saying he plays Fire Emblem on it, the consoles are used to register for matches in the Glitz Pit, and during chapter 6, Bub's parents argue over what to get him for his birthday and he gets bored and says he wished he brought his GBA.
Dang you could make an entire top 5 out of GBA lol If I make another list I might have to use that
I was under the impression that the bunny ears were changed because (at least at the time) the outfit they went with was trademarked by Playboy. Catgirls being fetishized was still a thing in 2004, though not as prominent as today.
They could still parody the bunny girl outfit or even reference it. Trademark wouldn't stop that. Tho I'm sure Intelligent Systems probably just didn't want people associating the two.
You right. Catgirls have been a thing forever. You can find, like, catgirl stuff pre 1900, but cat ears were def seen as more innocent/cutesy than bunny ears back in 2004
I feel like the og Gameboy reference in the parlor was an older reference for 2004 already. Even though it was discontinued only a year before ttyd (I think), it's release was 1989. With the mailbox sp and battle terminal being modern references for the time, I almost expected an updated reference there. The fire emblem reference also would have been a funny way to give a bit of self promotion to a current release.
Yea I'm kind of surprised there wasn't a DS or Wii U controller hanging up somewhere. For me personally the GBA on the wall was whatever, it was the that translucent GBA on one of the walls that made me laugh. I can't believe that style used to be everywhere
"Number 2 and a half: This Toad thinks Fire Emblem is good." 😂
That last point is the strongest of the video for sure. Why is Toadsworth in NSMB DS?? Why is QUEEN BEE in Mario Kart?? Why does Mario Party 10 have those weird alternate Goombas with hair? This was so interesting to see and yet so immediately dates the time period of the games' production, because rarely if ever do these side characters leave their original era (span of 5 years or so). Very interesting point indeed, and I agree that they should do this more often.
Jolene borrowing a magazine from Toodles to study trends
That entire chapter could be on this list lol There's a phone booth, the translucent GBA on the wall, the magazine. I kind of wrote them all off as stylistic decisions more than age, but if I make another list I'm throwing that in
Surprised the Hooktail offer scene isn't here...then again i can't imagine it was really that normal to begin with. Interesting how they took out the line of her saying people pay to do that tho
I thought about it, but I didn't want 3 things on the list that were sexual-ish. If I make a followup video it's absolutely getting added lol But yea aged poorly? That was weird then too
They _added in_ that Koops' Dad was defeated because _he fell for her offer hook, line, and literal stinker,_ so I think it evens out.
@@WackoMcGoose Wait was that the actual line? HOLY HOW DID I MISS THAT?!
That didn't age poorly, it's just completely out-of-pocket.
I got 2nd-hand nostalgia from this video. I wasn't prepared for how much this game dates itself.
Perhaps because I didn't play many games on Nintendo platforms after the SNES, but I never would have expected Nintendo to add timely references to their games.
How common is this for Nintendo? Are there other examples of their games dating themselves?
I almost laughed out loud at the game making fun of goth. Things were pretty different 10 years ago.
Nintendo doesn't really touch pop culture, current events, or trends so them existing in Paper Mario is pretty hilarious if you like that bizarre kind of thing.
Bruh I couldn't wear skinny jeans until I graduated because of the goth/emo/hipster hate lol
I never understood why toadsworth vanished after the gamecube era
From what I've been told Nintendo got very protective of their IPs once they signed a deal with Paramount. They probably see Toadsworth and other unique characters as potentially damaging to their brand. Nintendo wants families to think TOAD when they hear "Toad". Not a kooky old guy.
I think Nintendo is finally changing tone on this. I want to see me more Toadsworth
@@BubbleRift What deal did they sign with Paramount? I looked it up and I couldn't find anything.
@@xabi7772 oops I meant Universal. Again, not something I'm super educated with just what I've heard repeated to me. It may have been something else but I remember it being explained to me that Nintendo got very safe with their IPs when they started doing certain merchandising deals
@@BubbleRift I just looked it up and, apparently, they had been planning on making a theme park since the 2010s, so it might have something to do with the lack of Mario characters that are similar to groups of characters from mainline Mario in recent titles. Anyways, I hope that restriction will be gone soon, since it no longer affects remakes. Or, at least, if they do something that celebrates the series' history again (like the 35th anniversary or references in modern games), these characters aren't forgotten.
@@xabi7772 Yea, I don't think anything has been confirmed, but I know Nintendo just dropped all unique stuff in Mario games for a while. Remaking RPG and TTYD gives me hope tho
One funny thing that I found is that Beldam called me a gooner. 😬😬😬
Wait is that actually a thing? The word "goon" being used to describe, like, a hired thug type makes me lose it now. SUDDENLY I NEED TO MAKE ANOTHER LIST
@@BubbleRift oh ye I remember she called Vivian a gooner probably cos Beldam thinks Mario ‘hired’ Vivian
@@BubbleRift then again I’m pretty sure I remember her saying that but it could be slightly different as this is just from my memory, I think she said it in chapter 8 before the fight with Doopliss and the 3 - 1 shadow sirens
@@MousMoai You're about to have me googling, "Paper Mario Gooner". Thank you
best character solely because of that line
Bring back unique assets Nintendo! I love the world building and getting hyped about recognizing stuff!
the fire emblem joke was funny, subbed
Finally. Someone that appreciates the truth. Thank you!
I think the Nintendo Switch is pretty impressive
It can play Gamecube games v well 🙂
@@BubbleRift it can crack an egg
@@JoelTheParrot I feel targeted
