Ah, classic. I remember a lot of silly things that happened on this map. Years of fighting over that one building, holding the mayor hostage, running into the police station and getting gunned down. Many memories are to be had for a place like this.

This video has some kind of sad vibe, like you said “everyone packed their stuff and left” or “I came too late” together with the gameplay where you walk through the empty town and the music in the background really give off a sad feel. I imagine a person walking through the empty ghost city, desperately trying to find someone in the buildings only to realize that everybody’s gone.
Darkrp is a gamemode where adolescent teens and small children and adults 23-26 scream racial slurs and swear words at each other while you get banned for rdm.

I remember one time I was a gunsmith and somebody stole all my stuff (my guns). I ran up to a cop, told him what had happened and all he could say was "What the fuck do you want me to do about it?" Then I told him to find my shit and he still texted out "no." Also, there was this one time where a cop sprinted up to me with a red stunstick and arrested me for doing literally nothing. Man, fuck the police. Very SAD!

I never play gmod much and I see stuff about this map and hear stuff that happend in this map makes me feel like I was too late to join the servers and have fun. I guess we both feel the same way I guess :/

Let me tell a story.
I first played rp_downtown_v2 in 2014, i played it in a simple single player mode. I spawned in and spawned a sttider and battled it. While fighting the strider i felt, odd, creeped put, alone, and scared. I was feeling kenopsia. I had died multiple times just cause of me getting distracted due to kenopsia. I remember killing the strider then spawning a chopper and dying soon after. I despawned it and explored. I never saw a ghost but i felt like one was with me, it was kenopsia messing with my head. I dosconnected and connected to construct afterqords due to kenopsia. I also used the ar2 balls to fight the strider so it took a bit longer.
30,000 people used to live here Now it's a ghost town.
It's nice that people care for the map and remember its creators after many years, but it does make me feel a bit sad for more forgotten less popular maps and creators who may have ended up the same as Pro if he actually did pass :/
It makes me think how it is with me and my map for Warcraft III that somehow got moderately popular in roleplaying circles in Warcraft III.

I haven't played DarkRP in a very long time, I kind of miss it, but the way so many people act on the internet today, I doubt it would be as fun as it used to be, but who knows, maybe I'll try it again someday
I feel the exact same way
it's not even the way people act, it's the multiple servers filled with addons and people who don't actually roleplay but instead just try to farm as much money as possible inside their impenetrable bases
It's not worth playing anymore unfortunately. I sometimes hop on for nostalgia but it's filled with shit now and every server is basically the same.
I love legends like this , nobody have sure if this is true or fiction , very old map , legend with ghost , weird feeling on this. map ...

I nerved play on this map in severs all the RP severs I played used revisions of the map, but I do still get that felling of unease when I play it by myself; because it is so similar to the maps I played on.

Locking yourself in one of these houses on darkRP with a money printer behind a secret wall and just guarding your house from other players, listening to the ambience had a creepy vibe to it.

A quick summary, first of all, the creator didn't kill himself, he told everyone he was taking a "break" from everything. Also, there is no ghost ingame, the numerous footages claiming there was a ghost is all scripted events. And lastly, there would not be a ghost coded into the game considering all you could do in the early days in Garry's mod, was build maps, and add NPCs, you couldn't script anything into the game. So the "ghost" is nothing but a mishap.
Although i didn't own it at that time. Assuming the hammer editor wasn't much different from half life 2's. And that gmod had most of the entities hl2 had. It would be possible to script an event that could've been interpreted as said 'ghost.' into the map before compiling and uploading.

One of my fondest gaming memories was in DarkRP on Downtown V2 way back in the late 00s. The server was a fairly normal one with pretty chill admins who generally allowed scenes to play out to their conclusion before taking action for rules violations.
I was a CP (Civil Protection AKA Half Life 2 cop) and fairly new to Gmod. The server, as many do, soon became plagued by a RDMer (Random Deathmatching is the act of shooting other players at random in a game type where combat is heavily de-emphasized, such as sandbox or roleplay). Unlike most RDMers who get blasted by an experienced CP over and over and eventually leave or get banned, this guy was actually pretty good. Good enough to outfox most of the CPs.
Located in the apartments next to spawn, this guy continuously took pot shots at players spawning in for a good 25 minutes or so. CPs began making creative use of props to try and protect the spawn area, and eventually a small team of us made it into the apartments. He managed to dodge our fire long enough to move to the corner apartment, out into the street, and into the small basement under the corner shop across from the police station.
Another citizen, presumably a friend of his, had pretty thoroughly barricaded the basement area. By this time, the admins had decided to join in and forced themselves and some of their friends onto the CP faction and started handing out better Counter Strike Source weapons to the CPs who up to that point had been slumming with HL2 pistols and maybe an SMG. Once the "search warrant" was approved, we battered down the props only to find the friend begging the admins to not ban him and the perp having run into the sewers.
The experienced CPs split us up into teams and it was here that I first learned that Downtown v2 had a sewer system. Teams began to comprehensively search the sewers. We found many of the usual suspects in the sewers with shady deals and money printers and it was kind of hilarious for them to freak out at the sight of us only to realize we were hunting someone else.
I don’t remember exactly where in the sewers we caught up to the shooter, but once we heard over the CP radio where he was, the experienced CPs all seemed to know the fastest way to get to that exact spot, and the entirely of the CP faction arrived more or less all at once, blocking off all routes of escape for the shooter. After some brief pleas for him to surrender, it became clear that he intended to go out in a blaze of glory.
The room was lightly fortified with props for cover, but we quickly worked around it and injured him pretty badly, at which point he decided to make a run again. I very distinctly remember him turning around, only to be staring down the barrel of an SG550 auto sniper from CS:Source. The admins banned the guy shortly afterward.
It was a pretty remarkable experience and moments like that opened up my eyes to the potential of roleplay as a play style.

Wow... This map. Seeing this map brings back a lot more memories than I'd like. You can probably point to a room sized area of the map and I'd be able to recall something that happened in that general vicinity. Countless hours of theory-crafting bases and what was and wasn't the most defensible, working on E2's in the far reaches of the map. Rivalries and friendships were forged on this map, some of those people I still talk to today. Staring at a section of this map just plays ghost images in my head, situations and scenarios that have happened, funny moments, intense fights.
This map and rp_downtown_v2_fiend_v2b had way too many years behind them. If you're doing Garry's Mod stuff, I would like to request maybe looking at some older gamemodes too (Spacebuild, GMStranded, Melon Racer, Stronghold). If you need help getting anything working on the code end of things, I do Lua for contracts and Garry's Mod stuff, and would love to help you out if you need it. This map is an absolute classic. So many memories back in the early days of dark rp.
i had some of the best expieriences in this map. this video really brought it all kinds of emotions and memories.

Great in-depth video as always Radhaz. Love your content and I am grateful I found your channel some weeks ago.
Some years ago when I played these maps by myself I thought of the same thing with indirect nostalgia as I also missed out on playing RP back in the day and felt a bit lonely exploring the map by myself and a bit creepy too. It's an interesting topic for sure.

I always played with a friend with Hamachi on local server gmod, sometimes I have nostalgia when visiting gm_construct_flatgrass , gm_bigcity (and even rp_csdesert_v2 or the famous rp_richland) but recently I had installed "Background npc" and I loggued into gm_construct for making some posing, I saw someone walking in the background that scared the sh** out of me, but it was just because of the mod :D

Wow. I had no idea The Pro possibly died. That's unfortunate, if true. I've never played this map, nor was I in the DarkRP scene, so I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to that. Feels weird, though. I'm still getting that Source-empty-map feeling even though I've never been on this map when it was populated with a players
This map is one of my fauvorite maps ever made in source
I've been playing gmod since 2014. Its unreal the amount of servers I've played on that just dont exist anymore. There's a tapestry of unique experiences that will never be witnessed again, lost to the clutches of time and apathy. I swear, gmod is atrophy: the game.

I never played this map before. Maybe because I got into GMOD in 2013 and didn't know what stuff was popular before. The story behind it is really dark, though.
Theres definitely no ghosts in this map.
I was working with The Pro on this map along by having me code a custom exclusive RP gamemode for "The Shady's" community back in like 2010.
This world also has a few custom lua entities made by me. I still have the custom .fgd that I gave him which was used for the secret room in the underground. mainly to prioritize "Shady's" members and prevent the door from opening/warn people inside when someone hid near the boxes till the vending mashine door opened.
To be honest, you didn't miss much by not playing DarkRP. Most servers just boiled down to a drama fest due to un-enforcable rules, most notably the rule "No Random Death Match", or "RDM". Even if you did have a real roleplay reason to kill someone, that person could just shout "RDM" at the admins and more often than not the admins would just ban without looking into what happened.
Another bullshit rule was "New Life Rule" or "NLR". Basically if you die, you aren't allowed to go back to the situation where you died... These rules and others just made the gamemode set up to create drama between players.
The map feels haunted due to your classic spooky-Source, liminal feeling.
Nothing captures liminal spaces in video games quite like Source and g-mod.

I would like to do videos on Gmod maps (like caldern), but to be honest, there's not a whole lot of say about apart from there designs. Downtown had some sort of backstory/urban legends to it that's why I covered it. But let's see. Maybe I'll try in the future.

I had an experience like that; I was in a WW1 server with trench warfare systems, and different nations and all the like. There were a lot of cool ass people on that server. One of my favorites. Then one day, the Entente General called us all together, and told us the server would go down soon. Then it just disappeared. I never saw any of those players again. I was in the 31st CAB, I was PFC. Will Adams if anybody here was there too.
I have an Authreus server too. It wasnt G-Mod but a TF2 server with RPG mods. They had a group of them for different regions of the US and one day all the servers just poofed and I never saw the regulars of those servers in any other similarly modded servers.

I used to play on a downtown rp server called Bird RP and it had a vaporwave aesthetic. It usually was pretty empty and that's the way I enjoyed it most actually, but sometimes it would have quite a few players. One day it just disappeared from my favorites and the server browser. Also you could play as a half life 2 crow and fly around lol
I have very fond memories of playing on this map on a server called Penacos dark RP. I always used to pick the drug dealer/doctor role and would set up a laboratory and advertise "clinical testing". On one occasion I had a willing participant (hobo) in a cage and fed him every type of drug I could manufacture up until the lethal dose. I went through a few test subjects until the CP's caught wind of what I was doing. little did I know I would become the mayors personal chemist after inviting him to my cell to talk. another time on the same server the admin set up a scavenger hunt with a CT camera pointed at half a million bucks, there was a screen in the middle of town showing it. I recognised the spot as the top of the lamp at 9:14! I was nearly beaten there by a gundealer but just in the nick of time I used my gravity gun to pull it off of the light and ran off into a tunnel to pocket the cash! I spent a lot of that money on getting as many people as I could high at the same time. Littering alleyways, dark corners and other sneaky spots with every type of narcotic imaginable. thankyou for this video, it brought back fond memories.
Ah, good times. I remember setting up an awesome decorated bar for drinking and shady deal making, with secret money printers and a badass security system for good measure.
Personally, I've encountered an entity on Downtown V2. It starts down in the lowest train tunnels on the left side when you start the map and travels up the stairs into the noclip void then will travel across the map on a whim and very rarely interacts with map objects. The only time it's interacted with map objects is a time or two when I find glass broken that I never touched. The weirdest part about it is that it's not some dark figure or anything like that, but an invisible entity that will actually come when called and gives off this weird electrical-like feeling.
Pretty much all my favorite Garry's mod servers have disappeared... it's a little sad to see that my favorite servers just have simply vanished. I guess it's unsurprising considering that all of them were ran by some random players with lifes outside of video games.

The "Indirect Nostalgia" is something I've felt.
On certain maps, I get a sense of nostalgia because I remember the fun times I've had there, whether with friends or alone. Big ones being Construct, BigCity, and Freespace 13.
However, on maps like this, I feel like you described in the video. It feels like I've missed something. That everyone has gone, and all that is left is me. I've also experienced this in other games as well. It's a strange feeling.
I never actually knew how famous this map was. I’ve only seen it for it’s many versions and watching some gaming youtubers play other game modes on it like hide n seek on the Christmas version for example.

i feel like the current version every darkrp server uses now is too big and feels empty and sad no matter how many players are on. there used to be gun stores and meth shops and dumb stuff everywhere and it felt alive

Oh my God, I miss this map so much. I started playing Gmod when I was around 15...so about 8 years ago, pretty late to the party, but I still had a ton of fun. Played a lot of downtown_v2 and downtown_v4c, I'm not kidding when I say I poured hundreds of hours into darkRP alone, lol.
All of the servers I used to frequent have long since shut down, and sadly these days no servers even run these classic maps anymore. I try on occasion to get back into darkRP, but there's way too many squeakers on these days, and way too many admins who love to abuse their power. Just isn't the same as it used to be.
Ah well, I'll always have these pleasant memories. Thanks so much for this video man, it was a lovely trip down nostalgia lane!

I think people believe it's haunted mainly because of the fact that empty gmod maps tend to be kinda spooky, i'd say it's because gmod maps often have pretty simple geometry and use hl2 textures, which are very realistic, this creates a sort of uncanny valley sort of vibe, which contributes a lot to the creepy factor. Also... you are already at 4,5k subs ? this channel is growing so fast ! you're gonna be at 100k subs by the end of this year, mark my words !
