Link Wray's 1st single Rumble was in 1958. It can be argued that it is the 1st Heavy Medal, Hard Rock, and Punk song. He doesn't get the credit because he played the type of music to fit the feeling of the song. That is what a rumble sounded like to him, angry punks fighting. His image was Rock-A-Billy and he never changed his image to fit the music he played

I have always loved Link Wray. My dad had a few 45s (yep, I'm old) That I use to listen to when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I love in the documentary "It Might Get Loud" watching Jimmy Paige turn into a teenager playing air guitar to the Link Wray classic "Rumble".
This is another first time listen for me... There's so many artist I have not been exposed to yet until finding your channel. to be really honest when I first heard his voice it wasn't impressive. And then when I saw the information and heard what you had said about how he lost a lung in the military... wow! Then I felt really bad about my first impression after hearing that because singing with both lungs is so physically challenging, let alone one lung! I saw Link play in San Francisco years ago. He was in his late 70's I think and rocked the house. At one point he accidently fell down the dark stage stairs and got injured but never stopped playing. He's the great grandfather of grunge.
Link Wray was a phenomenal guitarist. Thanks for another great analysis video. May he rest in peace. I also heard that that late Keith Relf, of the Yardbirds, had only one lung. He was asthmatic, but still did manage to perform, sing and play harmonica. He lost his lung during the Eric Clapton period of the band. It would be cool if you could do an analysis video featuring the Yardbirds. Cheers!

Half blind, one lung, botched surgery, lots of scars, sometimes he would literally turn this blue in the face, plus the meds meant he couldn’t go out in the sun, which was the inside joke of the song. Amazing inspiration.

He was also Native American, Shawnee I believe... He was a legend in his own right and a grandfather of modern-day distortion, with his 'slashed speakers' initial technique of introducing distortion. How many boxes today are striving for that speaker-destroying sound? P.S. edit; I miss great shows like 'Old Grey Whistle Test' and the like, nothing like it today unless someone comes across some community programming on TV, which I'm not even sure they have anymore, alas...

Though I love rhythm and lead guitar, I have *always* been all about the bass ! Even as a very young child, I recall isolating the bass line in the way I listened to music. I smiled when you paused the song and commented about the bass here. 😊
I love his voice..I hadn't heard it until recently. I wouldn't say he had an elvis style really....he's just a cool and interesting individual. He's so different than elvis in every or most every, way.

About 1959 diagnosed with throat cancer, another reason he mainly did instrumentals...called the granddad of heavy metal for tracks like 'switch blade' insane for also 59' i think, compared to what the others were doing(buddy holly peggy sue etc.) Never mind the 'bat man' theme or rumble being band for the implied violence....an instrumental!... I'll also mention here, people with disabilities, jean vincent had a grean stick fracture of the leg whilst in the military.. where the broken bone sticks out of the skin , never had it fixed ,hense the distinctive way he stood at the microphone stand...

I can be an annoying know it all - but about 18 months ago I had 1/2 a lung removed (lung cancer - all good now). But it is an ongoing chore to keep up your lung capacity. He did get lucky not having his voice screwed up. Unfortunately pulling the tubes in and out took their toll on me - but it beats being dead. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents BTW listen to 'Rumble' surprisingly complex.
Check out Rumble by Link Wray, was it the first guitar using distortion? Very well known instrumental that was actually banned in the United States because it was believed it would incite violence. Apparently it was an influence on Jimmy Page.
You've featured Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins (two of my favorite guitarists, especially Tommy) and other fingerpickers, I'd love to hear your opinion on either Bert Jansch, or Davy Graham, or both. They were both excellent guitarists and influential beyond their notoriety, and I think you would enjoy listening to them play.
He works the hell out of that tail piece. I'm guessing he wasn't happy with the quality of the amp vibrato or he didn't have amp vibrato at all, because this is the effect that he's generating.
Love it. Now I’m on the track to find a lot more about Link. As a danish Music lover for many years, l knew he used to live in Copenhagen, but I never realised how great he was. Sorry😢

Link’s guitar here is a Yamaha SG2. They are priced around £1500 to £1800, and they are not so easy to get a hold of.

I can be an annoying know it all - but about 18 months ago I had 1/2 a lung removed (lung cancer - all good now). But it is an ongoing chore to keep up your lung capacity. He did get lucky not having his voice screwed up. Unfortunately pulling the tubes in and out took their toll on me - but it beats being dead.

Check out Rumble by Link Wray, was it the first guitar using distortion? Very well known instrumental that was actually banned in the United States because it was believed it would incite violence. Apparently it was an influence on Jimmy Page.

You've featured Tommy Emmanuel and Chet Atkins (two of my favorite guitarists, especially Tommy) and other fingerpickers, I'd love to hear your opinion on either Bert Jansch, or Davy Graham, or both. They were both excellent guitarists and influential beyond their notoriety, and I think you would enjoy listening to them play.

He works the hell out of that tail piece. I'm guessing he wasn't happy with the quality of the amp vibrato or he didn't have amp vibrato at all, because this is the effect that he's generating.
Billy Idol and Steve Stevens do an acoustic version of "Little Rebel Yell". I think you would be fascinated to see how the lads get on!
