Beautiful my friends,I was wondering when you would get to this masterpiece. That is the late great David Ruffin on lead, the lead voice in My Girl and Since I Lost My Baby.Ruffin had this rough gritty voice yet his delivery was so smooth. He also had the ability to hit the head notes.Note the transition when he says"easssses the pain". This song was released in 1967 by Norman Whitfield who did the musical arrangement and Roger Penzabene who wrote the lyrics.Penzabene was a young Motown songwriter who wrote the song after his wife had left him.The song was released in Dec.1967,shortly after that Roger Penzabene committed suicide on New Years Eve.This song has been described as one of the most melancholy ever sung by the Temptations,I think the producers wrote this song for David Ruffin's voice. The late Mary Wilson of the Supremes said that nobody could have interpreted a song like David Ruffin, when he sang a song you almost believed that he had lived the experience..His voice literally tore at your heartstrings.Note the great lyricism of this song ,e.g."Day in day out my tear stained face pressed against my window pane, My eyes search the skies desperate for rain 'cause raindrops will hide my teardrops, And no one will ever know that I'm crying, crying ,crying........LOL.In Trinidad Tobago we call this a tabanca song. This song is brilliant lyrically and musically .Where did Motown get these musicians and songwriters. If you want to hear more of David Ruffin singing lead for the Temptations listen to the following songs,It's Growing, You'll Lose A Precious Love,Beauty Is Only Skin Deep and I'm Losing You.Do this ASAP.Once again well done.
Lyricist Penzabene had just found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Unable to deal with the pain and unable to stop loving his wife, Penzabene expressed his pain in the lyrics of this song and its follow-up on the Temptations' release schedule, "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". The distraught Penzabene committed suicide on New Year's Eve 1967, a week after the single's release.
At this point it was just The Temptations, David Ruffin was one of the lead singers. David Ruffin became irresponsible and big headed and was eventually fired and replaced with Dennis Edwards. He would have liked to have gotten top billing like Diana Ross and The Supremes or Smokey Robinson and The Miracles but it never happened.
I was thinking about the title and for some reason, I thought about daytime soap operas on TV and Bollywood films. Whenever a person is crying, it's seems to start raining all of a sudden. Is that a coincidence or not?
David Ruffin was one of the leaders of "The Temptations".
