From the 1968 album, The Temptations I Wish it Would Rain, this fabulous song featured David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams. Ruffin singing the lead with his raspy, gospel style tenor voice, drove this easy beat blues rocker to Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100's, Number 7 in the UK and Number 1 in Canada. The hard percussions and coasting strings give a solidarity and a gentleness to their soul vocals that made for perfection, along with their choreography. Great memory. Great reaction Harri. Thanks for the memory. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

The Tempts were one of Motown’s top artists with so many consecutive hits. Everyone loved David as lead for the group. Who could disagree with that? But you’re right Harri, the original 5 were so great. They had the choreography and the look going on, besides their magnificent voices and harmonies. Living in Detroit I saw them several times when they appeared at local clubs, before they became too big. Great memories. Thanks for the great reaction. 👏👏👍

Thank you for taking me back to my high school days Harri. My colorful classmates would take us white girls into the restroom and teach us the steps to The Temptations, The Spinners and so many others! Had it not been for my friends in those days, I would not have been able to find my "soul" and dance with joy! As always, thank you!

Actually he blew the lyric at about 1:30 but recovered nicely, to where a casual listener would not notice, doesn't affect the music or the message ,back in those days there was no monitor with the lyrics, the singers had to know every word by heart, which is quite a task when you consider how many great songs all of the motown groups had.Ruffin's got to be in my top 10 singers of all time,Kendricks also, amazing that all of that talent was in one city on one label.

This is part of the Motown era & they had a lot of hits in the 60's - 80's such as "My Girl", "Ain't Too Proud To Beg", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)", "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "My Girl" etc. They were known for their harmonies, choreography & dress style.

David was fantastic, and it's a shame they had those issues with him and he was fired. But they kept having big success long after he left. They had many more hits and three more #1 songs after he left, and 'only' one #1 while he was in the band. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams left in 1971 and they still had some pretty big hits after that, including one of those #1s. They had great songwriters writing songs for them, that's where it all starts.

Let's see about things, The Temptations original 1961-1962 lineup did not include David Ruffin, he joined in 1964. Meanwhile, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles had already been together since 1960, so who influenced who the most? It was Smokey who was the primary producer and song writer for The Temptations in the early years for Motown, and it was Smokey who wrote their 1964-65 hit "My Girl".
And certainly The Temptations had no influence on The Platters, who formed in 1952, or The Drifters who go back equally in time with the Platters. --- But there is something great to be said for the "Classic Five" Temptations group, which is defined by David Ruffin's presence.

I reckon the Temptations were just as good if not better when Dennis Edwards replaced him . He gave them a harder funkier edge more suited to the newer progressive psychedelic soul tracks in late 1960’s & 1970 ‘s. .David was good at the leads he did ,but he let it go to his head & got too big for his boots ,demanding the group be renamed ‘David Ruffin & the Temptations ‘ . Otis & the rest of the group ,we’re having none of his caper & told him to sling his hook .

Don't believe the Temptations TV movie. It's all lies. Read the book, Ain't Too Proud to Beg: The Troubled Lives and Enduring Soul of the Temptations by Mark Ribowsky (2010) for closer to the truth about what happened to the classic Temptations lineup. I see no reason why David Ruffin shouldn't have been top billed like Smokey Robinson and the Miracles & Diana Ross and the Supremes (except for Eddie Kendricks also doing fantastic lead singing).
