David The Good's North Florida Food Forest: The Farewell Tour

  • Check out my little book Create Your Own Florida Food Forest for a great list of species and inspiration: amzn.to/20cxRDN
    Almost six years ago, author David The Good began his North Florida food forest. This food forest project has been visited by hundreds (or more) of people and has been toured by a multitude of gardening groups and individuals, including garden lovers who have driven in from other states to see it. It served as the inspiration for two Florida gardening books and was the testing ground for ideas in two other books. Almost 100 fruit and nut trees plus a baffling array of edible roots, shrubs, berries, palms and more...
    ...and I, David The Good, have now sold this amazing experiment to another lucky individual who also loves food forests. Today I present you with the farewell tour, letting you see, for the last time through my eyes, the incredible developments in this multi-year permaculture project. It's in a similar climate to Val and Eli's food forest, and has even been blessed by a visit from my Florida gardening friend Alex Ojeda, permaculture dude extraordinaire.
    Farewell, food forest. I will miss you.

    Hey david the good i am new to you but i have always loved the idea of gardening and i have.attempted to do traditional gardening. I live in Jacksonville so n florida climate. So i am a little turned off by all the challenges of gardening in this are number one being the flooding and number two being the freezing! What kind of ways did you handle this kind of thing when you were up here? Especially since i dont have 5 or 6 years of growth to protect it.

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pleased to meet you. Yes - you are in between the tropics and the cold there. I tested crops from similar climates and ended up putting all the successes in my book TCEFG (amzn.to/2KzcNJQ). In a nut shell, you will have great success planting crops well adapted to the climate. Everglades tomato, Seminole pumpkin, yard-long beans, okra, dent corn, taro, African yams (Dioscorea species), sweet potatoes, etc. And getting the timing right is important - the summer is a bad time to garden in Florida. Early spring and fall were my best times for gardening.

      +Retired SeniorChief I haven't grown all of them but have heard P. fortunei and P. elongata do well here. P. tomentosa I know does well - I've seen that one.

      We put mosquito fish in them. They eat the larva.

      I sold the property and moved to Central America - we are hunting for land here, then I'll create a new food forest. I do miss the old one, though.

    is cassava and yucca root I have heard its yucca here in ca socal to be exact its spelled yucca at stores like stater bros and ralphs can someone clarify

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Yucca" is a common misspelling of the Spanish "yuca." "Yucca" are actually big, spiky plants, not the root crop cassava. I've even seen Master Gardeners using the wrong name. Cassava = yuca. Thanks for stopping by.

    ANYTHING PAST ORLANDO DIES AND YOU NEED TO START ALL OVER AGAIN , BUT SOUTH FLORIDA IT GROW FOREVER AND FAST .

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      South Florida is much easier, but you can get some good things going north of Orlando. I was a bit south of Gainesville when I created this food forest. It's just a matter of picking the right varieties for the climate. I had to say a long, sad goodbye to most tropical fruit trees.
