Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I fished the Chompers skirted jig many years ago. I too put them up. Too many good choices I guess. So many fish, so many baits, so little time. Thanks for the tip on the jig heads too. Tight lines.
Don’t give up this old secret…lol. It has saved so many trips for me it’s insane. Smallies absolutely love it. So do big spotted bass and largemouth though. There might not be a better cold water bottom bait out there period. It’s excels for highly pressured fish too. If it’s a tough bite or the fish have gotten a lot of pressure, I will usually have one tied on. I highly recommend it anytime you are forced into fishing behind other anglers. One other thing I would to add is I do downsize to the 4 inch size when it’s cold. A football head is probably my first choice most times as well, but I love it on mushroom heads. Anytime there’s a shaky head bite, I will throw a skirted grub in the same areas on a mushroom or ball head. Targeting clay points and banks in the spring for the big Alabama spots we have here is one of my favorite techniques. A lot of guys do this with a shaky head. I like the hula grub instead. It just produces numbers like crazy and I think will draw better bites in that and a lot of other situations too. .
I haven't fished a full-sized hula grub in a long time. I throw the little Keitech Spider but it's a minute since I threw a full-sized Hula. I keep them for jig trailers- instead of double tail grubs- that way you can tear the skirt off and use them as a trailer or- leave them as they are. But I haven't fished them that way in a long time really. Usually, if something works well for smallies- it works for spotted bass- I bet these would as well.
Love the old stuff! So you mentioned that last years tourney schedule didn't lend itself to the hulagrub, but this season might. That means you think the hulagrub should be fished in certain lakes or situations, and not others. Would you mind briefly summarizing when you'd pull this out vs when you wouldn't?
Try the Keitech hyper spider and leave the hula skirt on. Trim your jig skirt flush with hook bend, this gives it a compact bulky profile that's a little different look. Picasso PBJ bling and brown purple Hyper spider is my go to.
I can’t tell you how many big bags of smallmouth I have caught out of pickwick and Wilson lakes of that lure. Back before football heads were much of a thing, we were molding our own. There’s a place for mushroom style heads too. If I am fishing flatter bottom I prefer the football. If I’m on a steeper slope I love the mushrooms and stand up kind of heads.
Yes they do. And they work when almost nothing else will. I don’t think there’s anything better if you are forced to fish behind other anglers. This is the juice right here. Lol I almost wish Matt wouldn’t tell anyone.
I was fishing a tournament 6-7 years ago as a non boater and got stomped by a hula grub. Dude wore me out and he wore everyone out that day plus had big fish. All smallies. I'm a believer
@@MattStefanFishing Dude some of those have baits have like a color on the outside then stick them in sunlight and a different color. Those are great in really clear water. Same thing you had but older package. 😎✌️
Does anyone know what hook size Picasso Aaron Martens Tungsten Football Head would work best for the 5" Double Tail Hula Grub? I see on Tackle Warehouse they have both 3/0 & 4/0.
I did the same thing. I use to fish a chompers hula grub over a decade ago and caught lots of bass on them. I tied one on this year and it was like old times catching bass, big ones too.
The hologram flake is a killer for me on some old school 80’s & 90’s jigs I don’t remember the name because we called them Block Head’s The bottom and top are flat the sides came bottom out top out like diamond then the front was rounded off. It gives it a duck walk waddle on shell bottle is where it shines. At the mouth of the river between the 3 main rivers from 50’-100’ off the bank it gets from 4’-5’ with cypress stumps your boat will fit in then the next 200 yards to the power line it’s 4’-10’ with grass patches but 80% is shell sand or mud bottom that’s all brackish. When the blue crabs hatch out and are about a silver dollar size you can catch 100+ fish in a morning from daylight to 10 or 11 and only fish maybe 1/2 mile out of the 12 miles between the 3 moths then when the shrimp move in there we take the grub and cut the tails off and rig it backwards and weightless or C Rig it now we been free rigging. An it can be a bass redfish speckled trout sheepshead yellow bass or even a catfish it may take 5 mins or it can take 45 minutes but when you find them you can power pole down and bust out the sleeping bag and pillow because as long as you want to fish they will bite you may have to move from one corner of the grass to the other but it’s 100yards long and 50-200 yards long so I fish the corners so I cast at 10 o’clock 10 to 30 times then cast 1 o’clock back and forth then spinning rod and straight out weightless over the top and fan cast then back down the sides. When they feeding on shrimp around the edge of grass they are stupid and will come out feed go back in then come back out Craziest shit I’ve ever seen them do but it works and has for 30 years I know personally can tell you but others have dun it for 20-30 years when Showing me and I had been fishing 15 years before that an would see them fishing out there and say they where catching sheepshead or or freshwater drum and catfish
I see you’ve taken a liking to some of the Picasso lures tackle! I love their jigs! I put together a skirt and put it on the tungsten ball head. Can’t wait to try it out! Keep making awesome content brother!
Out here in the west. You were born with them. lol. But it was such a staple for so many years. Loved when they had the old two piece ones that you could mix and match colors and the old stand up jig head was a must. Then the football head on the skirted grub became the standard. It’s also deadly on a Carolina rig
Ive never tried these before I can remember a buddy of mine swearing by these things... I think he threw them on a Carolina rig on Rayburn but that was a few years back and I guess I never picked any up. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Yamamoto used to make a jig head made specifically for the hula grub. It was an Arkie head. I used them specifically because I felt that Gary Yamamoto knew his baits better than anyone. I’ve been trying to stock up on them but haven’t been able to find them at TW. Great bait though.
@@pauleyplay Shepherdstown to Little Orleans. If I am using my Ranger Z521C Big Slackwater to Fish and Game Club, Four Locks to McCoy's Ferry (landing).
I believe that I learned of the hula grubs through your channel, one of best lures of all time, my favorite color is cinnamon green flake, & on green pumpkin if the water really stained I will dip the tails in chartreuse, the cinnamon blue I don't hardly get bit with it, anyway 1 day on the river I couldn't get a bite for nothing, tied on cinnamon green, it was game on buddy, & that Picasso head would be killer! Great video 👍🎣
Used to smash them on Tenkiller on the Hula Grub. For some reason I quit using it but this has reminded me to get them back in my arsenal. Mainly used Yamamoto but also used Chompers that were loaded with garlic. Ended up tossing those. 😂 Going to get some of the Picasso heads. They look good.
Those are top notch jigheads but at nearly $7 each is ridiculous. Tungsten is good for large punching weights or if your state does not allow lead. The Titanium weedguards are nice, but standard fiber ones are fine. This sport is getting too expensive, and unnecessarily.
I can't even count all the packs of those I have that used to be my Top bait. I really do not know why I still don't fish him much they still catch great fish .

The Dry Creek twin tail money grubber in the Road Kill color does very well for me on the river.

They can work everywhere but it’s more based on a lake type. For example they tend to be perfect for an Ozark lake but not necessarily Lake Okeechobee

The hyper spider has a stiffer skirt than the Yamamoto. Yamamoto is also awesome!

Yah that Lunker Lure Buzzbait has been my go to for 35 years 😂

The hula is still a staple out here in AZ. I have one tied on 90% of the time.
