WOW Paul they're all gorgeous, thank you for sharing!! My Red Prayer plant after being medium -sized and thriving, started struggling last Summer with spider mites, and even after months of using insecticidal soap and putting it in water culture, it still struggled!! But once I saw that the spider mites were completely gone, I placed my cuttings back in soil!! It's STILL struggling but I see one out of the three cuttings is getting a new leaf!! I think I'll remove one of the cuttings and try it in water culture again to see which method works better!!🤗

Very informative. I have two calathea. One was infected with gnats that I could not seem to get rid of, so I sprayed it down along with my other nearby plants and planted half in full sun and the other half under my Azalea bush. The one planted in a full sun location is hanging in there. Some days she’s all curled up then in the evening or not so sunny days she’s open wide and pretty. Her sister was doing well until I brought her upstairs to my bedroom with some other plants on my new plant stand. She didn’t seem to like it so I moved her back downstairs. She was doing well for a while, now she looks sad and parts of her has dried out. After viewing this video, I think I’ll dig up the ones in yard and try growing them both in water. Clever idea! One of my Calatheas is barely hanging on and I just discovered from a different YT'er that it has compacted soil, I'm sure of it. But TODAY I am going to transfer it to oxygen rich water!! Thank you!! Just subscribed. OMG, you're problem child is the one I am talking about too. Misting doesn't work.
Hey Paul, excellent guide! Transferring out calathea saved her from death but only a single stem survived the previous root rot. Since this one is still struggling, I suspect that I'm doing something wrong. So if I could ask you two quick questions: How often do you flush them and exchange their water? How much (orchid?) fertilizer do you use and how often? Thank you so much!
In the beginning I would flush the water often. Every couple of days. I didn’t add any fertilizer until I saw new growth - root and/or leaves. Then it was about once a week, and diluted. Always concerned of over fertilizing. They’re VERY sensitive plants. 🪴 😊
I have started water culture with my begonia Rex black beauty. I definitely start to see water root growing. However new leaf is still ashing. I suspect it could due to drastic temperature changes (20 day 10 night) or my LED scorching it (120W 50cm distance). I do think my other propagation in growing medium seem to enjoy high light and fairly warm and very moist environment.

I did this intuitively 2 days ago and was worried I might have done something wrong. One of the plants I did this to only had the roots, and has tubers. I’m not sure if it will survive but I hope it does. I’ll change out the water daily like you did. Thank you for the info.
Wow, great video, SO glad I found it. I got a maranta as a gift for Xmas. It came in a decorative container w/NO drainage! I inserted a glass ball w/a thin tube (that mimics wick watering) until I can transplant it in early spring, since it's winter in NY & I didn’t want to shock it. There has been some noticeable growth but I've observed crisping at some leaf tips and some of the older leaves closer to the soil have dried out completely. Clearly, I think I better not wait & get it into a water culture asap before I kill it. Thank you!!
I would always get the same issue in soil. You can even take cuttings if you want. I had so many maranta in water for a while before I sold them off. Let me know how it goes. 😃😃😃😃😃. Tysm for watching. So glad you’re here too!!!
If you mist watch out for fungal issues. Especially bc your leaves are touching each other and there isn't a whole lot of air flow. I personally would set up a humidifier next to them. Also if u mist or use rain water or distilled bc they are sensitive to chemicals and metals in tap water.
I just moved mine to water. I have a major pest problem that was not going away. Switching all plants to water until I can get rid of the bugs. I may keep them in water. My pothos and arrow heads do great in water.
@@paultheplantparent2702 The majority of my plants are still in water and are doing very well. My peace lily especially loves the water. It's exciting to see so much new growth from her. From a distance it looks like my plants are still in pots. There's a vase of water hidden inside each pot! So I still have the look of my cute white pots. The routine has changed a bit. I will change the water or top it off. I added small natural rocks to most vase. I noticed that the Roots eventually grab on to each rock. I'm not sure if it's for the plants stability? Or if they are extracting some type of mineral from the rock? I just noticed that the plants with the natural rocks do better than the ones without.
My lemon maranta and calathea are driving me crazy. Soil, leca nothing worked. Your video gave me new hope. I am going to transfer them to water today only.
Hopefully it will work out for you too. They’re such high-maintenance and pants. I have to keep an eye on mine in water culture. Nothing is 100% so I make sure I stay on top of them.
What would you say is the ideal level of water : a little under the crown, at the crown, above the crown ..? Your calatheas and marantas are so beautiful ❤
I would keep the water right at the base of the plant, as long as it’s clean. If you’re looking for an easier plant in water, that looks comparable, the Chinese evergreens do fantastic in water. Mine are still doing their thing after many months!!! Calathea can be heartbreaking sometimes.

I use the orchid feed in the link in the description. Very diluted. Works pretty well. 😃. I hope yours turns the corner. They’re very challenging plants.
I just purchased a Grey Star Ctenanthe in water. I've had it for a month. Recently it doesn't look so good. How often does the water need to be changed?
@@Sylphadora so many ppl leave comments like yours. I lost so many in soil. 😞. The water works, but most of mine then got attacked by thrips of some sort, which killed my collection. Such sensitive plants. 😞
@@paultheplantparent2702 Wow, I’m so sorry! It seems hydro doesn’t make plants less susceptible to pests. Two months ago my plants got thrips too and I have been treating them weekly ever since. I also isolate and treat new plants before placing them next to the others. So I actually put my calathea that wasn’t doing so well in water and it’s doing OK. Not better, but not worse either and I’m happy as long as it stops decaying. I actually got another calathea today and put it in water and treated it with homemade pesticide straight away. This way I can see how a healthy plant reacts to hydro and compare the one in recovery to it.

I need your advice pretty please 🙏 After seeing your video months ago I transfered a very little Triostar (only 1 stem that I divided from a mother plant in soil) in water months ago and it was doing perfect, shooting a lot of water roots and even a new leaf, so I didn't change anything from my routine with it and its always at the same spot, but since this week its leaves are curling... At the end you're talking about "your problem child" (lol) that suddendly did the same : Did you ever find a solution ? thank you for your attention :)
I didn’t find the exact cause but I know the leaf curling means the roots are compromised. If the roots aren’t good and the humidity isn’t high enough, they quickly do a nose dive. Not an easy genus of plants, to say the least. 😞
@@paultheplantparent2702 oohh so maybe it's because of spring's heat and the fact I don't have any humidifier... I'll try to transfer it to sphagnum moss in a transparent plastic box so it can have humidity 🤔
hi paul! thank you so much for this very informative and inspiring vid. thanks to you, i recently converted my prayer plants from soil to water (and they are loving it, well most of them)! have you ever successfully done this with maranta leuconeura? i had one in water for about a month+ with no new root growth, and all the leaves curled/boarderline died. my other plants grew tons of new roots/shoots by that same time. i am worried i may have almost killed (or seriously shocked) my maranta leuconeura and reverted it back to soil. would love to know your thought and if you'd had any success with that variety in water!

Hi, I bought a Calathea from Petco, it actually came in it's own little water only vase. It's beautiful! My question though is they seemed to have filled the water too high and it covered bits above the roots. The roots are nice and white, but the stems where they are shooting out from that are submerged in water, are getting a bit slimy, and dark. I'm really worried about them rotting. I use distilled water, and change it once a week. Any recommendations on what I can do to get that slime off the bottom stems? Thank you, and love your videos! Oh, also what do you do when the roots are super long?
Hello there. Yup I got some from there too. I would clean the bottom of the stems well and then keep the water level where the roots are. They have Calathea and Ctenanthe in water there. I usually leave the roots long but you can always trim them a little if you want. Tysm for watching these videos. 😃😃😃😃😃

@@beth7843 usually the offshoots can separate easily from the mother. As long as they’re big enough to survive on their own. Are you not sure how to remove them?
I’ve always rooted cuttings in water and through the years, when I’d forget about them but they’d still continue to grow, I knew it was possible, but wanted to know how to adjust for different plant types. It’s SO easy now. I love it!!!

@@lilyofthevalley54 yeah, kinda. I figured it’s an inert medium and it’s kinda like rock wool so I figured I’d give it a try. It doesn’t rot so I wanted to see how the plants did in it. I was excited to see them grow and thrive - Some better than others, but it was generally a positive result. I still grow some of my plants in acrylic yarn today. Go figure! 😃😃😃
Oh wow! Maybe I am keeping water level too high? When I switch water out it smells egg and rotten. Is keeping water lever right at the base before roots helpful for that? Worried my water plants will ‘rot’
Sometimes it’s the shedding and rotting of old roots that causes the smell. I would clean the roots off and make sure they’re all alive - all firm and whitish/tan. They’re so sensitive, that rotting could make them decline.
How is your Caletha doing? I just bought one in soil , it started to brown edges, , and is watered and light, so I am thinking put it in water, your one will tell me if is ok to do so thanks Rosio picta uh califia
I had such great calathea like the leafs were very nice and big with no brown spots but it sadly got infected or invaded by lice which I didn't manage to get rid of so I threw it in the trash. Since then I haven't bought a new one but calatheas are really cool will buy a new one soon. But how do you grow in just water? I mean is there something in particular to think about or to avoid. It looks very simple but it almost looks too simple to be true so to speak.😉😀 And how do they get nutrients since there is no soil?
It does seem too simple. I’m kind of always waiting for the next shoe to drop. But they all seem to be doing great!!!! I use orchid fertilizer mostly for these ones. Very diluted. Just keeping the water clean is all I do. The only losses I e had have been ones that I forgot about after a few weeks and they dried up completely. It’s a struggle to get them back after that. I just need less plants lol. Ctenanthe seem to do the best of all of them tho. Very easy plants. 😃😃😃

Yup. I do a couple of drops of the premised solution. This way I could add nutrients with each watering if I wanted to. I let the plants show me if they want more. So far, less is great for them.

My Ctenanthe setosa's leaves have started to curl. I removed all the soil and placed roots in water a few days ago, any idea why the leaves have started curling?
Sometimes it’s hard to tell but usually that’s a sign of dehydration - that there’s an issue the roots. Was the soil too dry when you noticed that? Just keep the water as clean as possible. Let me know how it goes. 😃👍🏼🌱
Did your calatheas had a temporary hard time adjusting from soil to water ? After watching your videos I decided to buy a Calathea Marion and transfer it to aquarium water" (after removing most of the soil) but she became ugly really quickly :( (wilted, curling leaves etc). Any advice ?
I’ve seen that happen if the old roots aren’t viable. When they start to die off, the plants get get moisture. Sometimes I’ve had to start their roots from scratch. Also, aquarium water may not be good before it’s acclimated. Additional bacteria could help the rotting process and without viable roots, could be an issue. Do any of the roots look whitish? Those are the healthy roots. Everything else can come off. Keeping the water clean in the beginning really makes a difference. 🌱

I did the same at the same time with a Triostar and both died not long after my comment unfortunately... The old roots where healthy so I don't understand, but I guess yes that's why I've seen people cut all the soil roots to make water roots, but I heard calatheas's roots were very sensible so I was scared to try. I don't remember if they even had time to shoot water roots... When I said aquarium water I meant dechloronized with the product that remove harsh minerals, as I heard calatheas hate tap water. I kept the water clean, no fertilizer, no harsh light, idk what I've done wrong ;(
@@sailorPinata awwww. That’s odd. Usually they don’t even react when transferring. Unless there was a hidden issue already, not sure why they do that. The only one that gave me an issue was the triostar. Calathea are so challenging in general, I only kept 2 of my survivors. The rest were attacked by thrips very badly. Now I just steer clear of them in general. So sorry they didn’t make it. 😢

@@sailorPinata oh definitely. They multiplied SO fast I couldn’t believe it. You may have better luck. Have you tried semi hydro? Lava rock or Leca? Might be more successful. 🙏🏼👍🏼🌿
Hello. Both white fusion and Stromanthe triostar are just as sensitive in water as in soil. They both still give me problems. Trying some new things/experiments so we’ll see what happens.
What is the humidity conditions you have them in. I live in a desert so humidity is always very low usually 30% or less. Living in water will they still need humidity ?
I think it was just adjusting to the transfer. The leaves are much better now. They all get the same light - indirect from a North facing window. But I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Tysm for watching. 😃😃😃🌱

Hello. I’m in NY. Yay nude orchid fertilizer high in nitrogen I just use tap water but I’ve added aquarium water conditioner for very sensitive plants. I would add in the fertilizer about once a month, when I would flush out the water. 👍🏼🌱
Are you using tap water for these particular plants? I just took one out of soil tonight and cleaned really well then chopped roots down. Its sitting in plain water, Im afraid to give nutrients....my 2 previous Calathea didnt like nutrients or sidnt like my tap water 😢
I use tap water... but you can add a couple of drops of aquarium water conditioner to remove heavy metals/chlorine. I wouldn't add any nutrients until I know they've acclimated. 🙂
@@gaylegonzalez71 My plants have been in water for over 9 months. Right now it’s mostly a couple of Ctenanthe types and pinstripe Calathea. Most of my others got attacked by mites, but they didn’t look like spider mites. Larger, lethal mites of some type. Really did a number on most of them. But the Ctenanthe burle marxii, variegated Ctenanthe and pinstripe Calathea are still doing well.
Hello. Yup, I use an orchid fertilizer with micro and macro nutrients - very diluted by 1/2 - 1/4 of the recommended amount. I only feed once the plants are acclimated to water (growing new roots/leaves).
Some people add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water. Others cover the vase with something dark to keep light out. I get a little algae but. I thing too crazy. Are you fertilizing a lot?
Don't say"problem child " that is not a nice way to see children . It is from culture , we don,' t say "problem mother,father, sister, friend " is always towards children. The sad thing they hear things about themselves,society has "stigmatised children in this way" ,be kind and have compassion for them .

Just keep an eye on them. Any other drastic changes, they can throw a fit. But mine did great….until the thrips devoured them. It was horrible.

It was a huge challenge. She ultimately didn’t make it. Highly variegated calathea seem to be kind of weak. Let me know how it goes for you.

The temperature can definitely make a difference. They suffer in my space when it gets cool. Keep me posted. 😃😃😃

I Just lost my first calathea Freddie, needless to say, I’m a little sad to see him go however, it has 3 root corns so I am trying to save them.

I only give very mild fertilizer and not with every water change. They seem to love it, so much more than soil. 😃😃😃

@@Sylphadora so many ppl leave comments like yours. I lost so many in soil. 😞. The water works, but most of mine then got attacked by thrips of some sort, which killed my collection. Such sensitive plants. 😞
@@paultheplantparent2702 Wow, I’m so sorry! It seems hydro doesn’t make plants less susceptible to pests. Two months ago my plants got thrips too and I have been treating them weekly ever since. I also isolate and treat new plants before placing them next to the others.
So I actually put my calathea that wasn’t doing so well in water and it’s doing OK. Not better, but not worse either and I’m happy as long as it stops decaying. I actually got another calathea today and put it in water and treated it with homemade pesticide straight away. This way I can see how a healthy plant reacts to hydro and compare the one in recovery to it.

Hi ! I need your advice pretty please 🙏 After seeing your video months ago I transfered a very little Triostar (only 1 stem that I divided from a mother plant in soil) in water months ago and it was doing perfect, shooting a lot of water roots and even a new leaf, so I didn't change anything from my routine with it and its always at the same spot, but since this week its leaves are curling... At the end you're talking about "your problem child" (lol) that suddendly did the same : Did you ever find a solution ? thank you for your attention :)
I didn’t find the exact cause but I know the leaf curling means the roots are compromised. If the roots aren’t good and the humidity isn’t high enough, they quickly do a nose dive. Not an easy genus of plants, to say the least. 😞
@@paultheplantparent2702 oohh so maybe it's because of spring's heat and the fact I don't have any humidifier... I'll try to transfer it to sphagnum moss in a transparent plastic box so it can have humidity 🤔

@@amanpakwan232 probably wouldn’t survive completely submerged. The leaves need to breathe air. But some people put the roots in aquariums. 👍🏼🪴

It had been a couple of months but now it’s been even longer. This has become my long term growing method. It really works well for me. 😃

Do you mean the trio star? That plant was a challenge. Never completely transitioned. It was one of the weakest varieties. 😞
hi paul! thank you so much for this very informative and inspiring vid. thanks to you, i recently converted my prayer plants from soil to water (and they are loving it, well most of them)! have you ever successfully done this with maranta leuconeura? i had one in water for about a month+ with no new root growth, and all the leaves curled/boarderline died. my other plants grew tons of new roots/shoots by that same time. i am worried i may have almost killed (or seriously shocked) my maranta leuconeura and reverted it back to soil. would love to know your thought and if you'd had any success with that variety in water!
Hello there. 😃😃😃. It’s so interesting. I’ve had lots of success with maranta in water, as well as the same exact situation you described - leaves started to curl and it went down hill. The ones that were ok did great for a long time. Not sure what causes that. Let me know how it works out. 😃👍🏼🌱

Hi, I bought a Calathea from Petco, it actually came in it's own little water only vase. It's beautiful! My question though is they seemed to have filled the water too high and it covered bits above the roots. The roots are nice and white, but the stems where they are shooting out from that are submerged in water, are getting a bit slimy, and dark. I'm really worried about them rotting. I use distilled water, and change it once a week. Any recommendations on what I can do to get that slime off the bottom stems? Thank you, and love your videos! Oh, also what do you do when the roots are super long?
Hello there. Yup I got some from there too. I would clean the bottom of the stems well and then keep the water level where the roots are. They have Calathea and Ctenanthe in water there. I usually leave the roots long but you can always trim them a little if you want. Tysm for watching these videos. 😃😃😃😃😃

How do you remove the offshoots to start new plants? I have two offshoots from a Gray Star plant that are growing in water and not sure what to do.
@@beth7843 usually the offshoots can separate easily from the mother. As long as they’re big enough to survive on their own. Are you not sure how to remove them?

I’ve always rooted cuttings in water and through the years, when I’d forget about them but they’d still continue to grow, I knew it was possible, but wanted to know how to adjust for different plant types. It’s SO easy now. I love it!!!

@@lilyofthevalley54 yeah, kinda. I figured it’s an inert medium and it’s kinda like rock wool so I figured I’d give it a try. It doesn’t rot so I wanted to see how the plants did in it. I was excited to see them grow and thrive - Some better than others, but it was generally a positive result. I still grow some of my plants in acrylic yarn today. Go figure! 😃😃😃

Oh wow! Maybe I am keeping water level too high? When I switch water out it smells egg and rotten. Is keeping water lever right at the base before roots helpful for that? Worried my water plants will ‘rot’
Sometimes it’s the shedding and rotting of old roots that causes the smell. I would clean the roots off and make sure they’re all alive - all firm and whitish/tan. They’re so sensitive, that rotting could make them decline.

Most of my Calathea got attacked by thrips. It was horrible. I still have a pinstripe that wasn’t affected and is doing well in water still. 😃👍🏼
I had such great calathea like the leafs were very nice and big with no brown spots but it sadly got infected or invaded by lice which I didn't manage to get rid of so I threw it in the trash. Since then I haven't bought a new one but calatheas are really cool will buy a new one soon.
But how do you grow in just water?

It does seem too simple. I’m kind of always waiting for the next shoe to drop. But they all seem to be doing great!!!! I use orchid fertilizer mostly for these ones. Very diluted. Just keeping the water clean is all I do. The only losses I e had have been ones that I forgot about after a few weeks and they dried up completely. It’s a struggle to get them back after that. I just need less plants lol. Ctenanthe seem to do the best of all of them tho. Very easy plants. 😃😃😃

Yup. I do a couple of drops of the premised solution. This way I could add nutrients with each watering if I wanted to. I let the plants show me if they want more. So far, less is great for them.

I had a triostar but it was much more of a challenge than the others. They seem very sensitive and weak compared to other varieties. 😞

My Ctenanthe setosa's leaves have started to curl. I removed all the soil and placed roots in water a few days ago, any idea why the leaves have started curling?
Sometimes it’s hard to tell but usually that’s a sign of dehydration - that there’s an issue the roots. Was the soil too dry when you noticed that? Just keep the water as clean as possible. Let me know how it goes. 😃👍🏼🌱

The plants I still have in water are over a year in WC. A few had gotten devoured by thrips but the survivors are doing great.

Did your calatheas had a temporary hard time adjusting from soil to water ? After watching your videos I decided to buy a Calathea Marion and transfer it to aquarium water" (after removing most of the soil) but she became ugly really quickly :( (wilted, curling leaves etc). Any advice ?
I’ve seen that happen if the old roots aren’t viable. When they start to die off, the plants get get moisture. Sometimes I’ve had to start their roots from scratch. Also, aquarium water may not be good before it’s acclimated. Additional bacteria could help the rotting process and without viable roots, could be an issue. Do any of the roots look whitish? Those are the healthy roots. Everything else can come off. Keeping the water clean in the beginning really makes a difference. 🌱

I did the same at the same time with a Triostar and both died not long after my comment unfortunately... The old roots where healthy so I don't understand, but I guess yes that's why I've seen people cut all the soil roots to make water roots, but I heard calatheas's roots were very sensible so I was scared to try. I don't remember if they even had time to shoot water roots... When I said aquarium water I meant dechloronized with the product that remove harsh minerals, as I heard calatheas hate tap water. I kept the water clean, no fertilizer, no harsh light, idk what I've done wrong ;(
@@sailorPinata awwww. That’s odd. Usually they don’t even react when transferring. Unless there was a hidden issue already, not sure why they do that. The only one that gave me an issue was the triostar. Calathea are so challenging in general, I only kept 2 of my survivors. The rest were attacked by thrips very badly. Now I just steer clear of them in general. So sorry they didn’t make it. 😢

Hello. Both white fusion and Stromanthe triostar are just as sensitive in water as in soil. They both still give me problems. Trying some new things/experiments so we’ll see what happens.
What is the humidity conditions you have them in. I live in a desert so humidity is always very low usually 30% or less. Living in water will they still need humidity ?
Hello. Yeah, they still like their humidity but for a while it was kinda low - like 20%. But I think that might be why the mites took over. 😞

Hello. Yes I do change the water. Once they’re acclimated it can be once a week or once every two weeks. They’re great in water culture! 😃🌱

I used tap water with water conditioner added. It seems to help with these plants.

Hello. I’m in NY. Yay nude orchid fertilizer high in nitrogen I just use tap water but I’ve added aquarium water conditioner for very sensitive plants. I would add in the fertilizer about once a month, when I would flush out the water. 👍🏼🌱
Are you using tap water for these particular plants? I just took one out of soil tonight and cleaned really well then chopped roots down. Its sitting in plain water, Im afraid to give nutrients....my 2 previous Calathea didnt like nutrients or sidnt like my tap water 😢
I use tap water... but you can add a couple of drops of aquarium water conditioner to remove heavy metals/chlorine. I wouldn't add any nutrients until I know they've acclimated. 🙂

@@gaylegonzalez71 My plants have been in water for over 9 months. Right now it’s mostly a couple of Ctenanthe types and pinstripe Calathea. Most of my others got attacked by mites, but they didn’t look like spider mites. Larger, lethal mites of some type. Really did a number on most of them. But the Ctenanthe burle marxii, variegated Ctenanthe and pinstripe Calathea are still doing well.
Will you ever transfer to soil or always in water
For prayer plants I prefer growing them in water. They don’t do well for me in soil. 😞

Hello. Yup, I use an orchid fertilizer with micro and macro nutrients - very diluted by 1/2 - 1/4 of the recommended amount. I only feed once the plants are acclimated to water (growing new roots/leaves).

Some people add a little hydrogen peroxide to the water. Others cover the vase with something dark to keep light out. I get a little algae but. I thing too crazy. Are you fertilizing a lot?

The sad thing they hear things about themselves,society has "stigmatised children in this way" ,be kind and have compassion for them .
