How do you clean algae off roots?
@@MontannaP I usually run them under water and adding a small amount of hydrogen peroxide helps keep the algae down as well. 😃
I bought one online about a year ago, put it in a bucket of water outside in the shade. It almost died once bc the bucket dried out, but I’ve kept water in it since and it’s been doing fine. I want to transfer it to actually being planted in the ground, though. I’m in zone 9b. Can I do that here, at this point, successfully? Any tips?
@@toriespina I’m not sure if it would survive a frost, being from Hawaii. Mine are just in water now too. It’s been years. You can always take cuttings just in case anything happens. But not sure it would survive a frost.
Thank you for this! I was expecting little plantlets down by the cut end of the stem but I ended up with roots all along the stem and a new tuft of what I assume is a new rhizome at the top in the center of the leaf.
@@Pixelated_Moon you that happens sometimes. It was a surprise to me too. Excited for you and your new plant baby.
Hi Paul. Every time I see broms being grown indoors it kind of makes me smile. Mind you, a couple of days ago the gardeners were doing their thing around our house (we live in a retirement village) and when I went outside to see what they were doing while they were off for their lunch break I nearly cried. They had ripped out a whole area of broms which kind of needed pruning back but I thought it was a bit heavy handed. I thought I would rescue some, so my husband and I filled a large bag, some had branched out in three directions etc. I was thinking of selling them on FB Marketplace because there would have been several hundred dollars worth of plants there but instead asked my daughter if she would like them. Her eyes nearly popped when she saw the bag overflowing with gorgeous red centred broms. I hate to see beautiful plants being treated like a disposable item so I'll have to keep an eye out for the gardeners next time they're in my area of the village. Sorry for the epic saga but I had to tell you because I thought of you at the time this was going on and the bare rooted brom in this video reminded me of what happened. Back to this video and you using the moss for different plants, I wondered whether you have used this method for rooting cuttings of jade plants instead of just water and if there would be any advantage in using moss.
@@renatecormick7399 you and I are the same!!!! I would have been right there grabbing them all. Such a shame how they just toss them. For a jade, I’ve propped in moss before. It did fine, but it dries out pretty quickly so I had to keep an eye on it. I’m sure there are benefits to the air spaces in the moss for root growth too. Water is just easier for us. 😃. Do you keep all your plants in yarn/lava rock indoors all year?
@@AnnetteWaits hello. Yup, I keep most of my plants indoors in their yarn or lava medium. Sometimes I’ll put some outside in the summer, but the majority stay inside all the time. One’s I put out are usually sun-loving succulents and flowering plants like vinca and some coleus.
I have a goldfish plant that was shipped looking horrible. Was thinking of potting in lava rocks. Do you think it would do well in that?
@@AnnetteWaits hello there. I’ve had good luck with goldfish plants in lava rock (nematanthus and columnea). How bad of a shape is your plant in? Many times I e had challenges if the plant is in a state of decline. Shipping can temporarily set them back. For root rot, do you wait to water them? Hopefully you didn't say and I missed it. I was watching, listening, while doing dishes. I have a begonia in sphagnum moss. They sent it like that, in a tall thin, maybe 3" tall pot. It is doing phenomenally well. I set that pot inside another pot that is pretty snug to the original one. I have tons of roots coming out of the original pot into the water reservoir. Sometimes I wait a couple of extra days before refilling the reservoir. You know, to make sure the bottom of the moss is dried out. I don't want to pull it out to check because I'll rip all those roots by pulling them through the drainage holes.
