About the graphite marks at 17:10, you can create a graphite wash with turpentine (or any other oil thinner). Graphite pencils use an oil based binder.

Bought two instantly. One for Christmas for my family and one for my dear friend who helped me see the light which ultimately led to my baptism. Beautiful works of art

As a Christian i adore this art! It is obvious that Bisley had a lot of respect for this subject. BTW, that knight killing a dragon is St. George

Absolutely impressive!! As an Artistic pop culture junkie transitioning to a devoted Christ follower. I have been working on my own work to utilize some of my favorite influences and break new ground covering Gospel topics in some hybrid way.

I need to get this book! Thanks for highlighting this work! I work in ministry and think the passion, detail, excellence and respect put into this work could be appreciated by a lot of Christian’s.

A lot of Rubens and Rembrandt in these, but man, what a beautiful book of narrative art. I’m not generally a fan of Bisley’s idiom, but this shit is, to quote Ed, dope

Definitely a lot of Baroque inspiration, especially with the Caravaggio shadows. The forms are so solid and three dimensional it's insane

A companion book would be Bisley's Paradise Lost, heavily inspired by Dore. (The Knight you were asking about was St. George, who you must have heard of. Esteban Maroto recently did a book of St. George art.)
There is a sometimes strong erotic element to Biblical art that's more often noted by outside cultures. In Japanese art and film. there is a honing in on the sadomasochism of the martyrs (particularly St. Sebastian. pierced by arrows) and the torment of the crucifixion. Sex was the big draw in the Biblical epics put together by Cecil B. DeMille; religion became his excuse for getting away with some pretty lurid images.

I really love Bisleys depiction of the cross as it's not the traditional as we know. it is more to what it would naturally be. this book is amazing just as an art study if you're not a believer. as Ed said the way he captures the dead weight of Jesus after enduring the cross. to draw a limp body is another level

St. George's eyes in the last page where he's standing over the dragon head looks kind of like Solomon Kane's.

It used to be a common tradition a couple hundred years ago when artists had to tour Italy/Rome to take a look at the old masters. Michelangelo and Caravaggio were popular picks among the pantheon of master artists

You guys should consider making a video about Simon Bisley's work on Slaine: The Horned God, it's probably his most iconic work on comics.

I honestly thought half of this book would've focused on Revelations because if anyone would be good at drawing biblically accurate angels it would be Bisley.

If you use a lead holder, you can take the graphite shavings from the sharpener and mix them with water to make a wash.

With some of those “wash-like’ areas, makes me wonder if he is using water on top of the pencil lead.

Yeah I was thinking like a watercolor pencil kinda thing where you use the graphite just like a pigment. Forget the actual name of it but it’s a lot of fun to use

The Bible under steroids. The knight with the dragon is Saint George, of course.

A great, yet sometimes a bit overlooked book by the King. Had a luck to buy a spanish edition for cheap a long time ago, and its one of my fav by The Biz. As the guys said, the amount of sketches inside is amazing, and most of them are equally great as the finished pieces. The pencil stuff is so rich in details and masterclass level of compositing and rendering with self limited tools. Highly recommend getting it. ( OT: Also maybe worth mentioning/exploring is the one-shot gore packed book called Fistful of Blood with Kevin Eastman, which has the same graphite vibe to it, and is funny as hell)

I'm curious about the St. Anthony images. I wonder if Bisley is conflating St. Anthony the Great with St. Anthony of Padua? The image is clearly a monk or priest with tonsure. Typically St. Anthony of Padua is shown with tonsure and Franciscan robes. As far as I know, he was never tempted or taunted by demons like in the art. St. Anthony the Great from Egypt was though. It's not uncommon for artists to mix up different saints who share the same name. Either way, this is an amazing book! Thank you for sharing!

Been a fan of Bisley since the early nineties. His craftsmanship is incredible and on full display here; unfortunately, some of the images are blasphemous and deeply disturbing. The one of the Mother of God, is incredibly dangerous for him, to say the least. Portraying Our Lady, sexually?! On the cover, Christ face after his removal from the cross, is in stark contrast to the peace we see of Christ on the shroud. Reverence, respect and piety is vital. This IS GOD, we’re talking about. Better to be safe than sorry. God forgive us.
