I recommend going back and watching older Dragon Age trailers, they often did not fit the tone of the game they were selling, Inquisition also had pop songs, Origins had 00's metal music, DA2 and Origins presented the game as being a edgier powerfantasy game than the game turned out to be.
That's the one thing giving me hope. DAO and DA2 turned out to be so much more interesting than their action-movie trailers made them seem. I'm hoping that this trailer is mostly due to some marketing committee nonsense and the real game will still feel like DA, at least as far as the writing

I think they said that they changed the name to "The Veilguard" because they didn't like how the old name "Dreadwolf Rises" focused on the antagonist, when they want the focus to be about the hero and their companions.
I love how thoughtful your commentary always is. I'm with you, staying optimistic about the game. I'm too invested at this point. It is interesting that marketing team decided to start with an upbeat companion trailer but I think it's part of their change of focus to the mc &the gang. DAI had a similar-ish companion hype trailer, so I don't think tonally this game will be that different to the last installment, but I get why some are freaking out. As for the art, I think it's alright even in the trailer, but some ingame pics floating around show it's very much a Frostbite game with similar looks to dai.
11:12 - I was watching this video whilst reading about the recent Life Is Strange announcement, and my brain somehow decided that Welonz was referring to Chloe Price here. 11:38 - They've been going on and on about how griffins are extinct in Thedas for SO LONG that I always knew we'd see one eventually!
Nah its still more stylized in the gameinformer promotional posters aswell. Not as muddy as this reveal trailer sure but very much the same tone and vibe as the reveal trailer.
I think the tone of the trailer is mostly coming from the EA marketing team still not understanding people like single player games. Seems like they are trying to appeal to a broad audience
It’s very reminiscent of the breach trailer, introducing characters and creating an anthem to inspire players. I’d say time has passed to because you had “the missing” comics drop as well
2:02 No, Harding wasn't like that previously. She had freckles in Inquisition, but by comparison they were nearly invisible. They were apparent before, but they're extreme now.
With waiting for this game for so long I don´t really have any strong feelings about it now. Except being cautiously happy for seeing Lucanis there because I wanted him as a companion since I read the short story. :D The vibe is weird and not what I usually like but I will wait to see the gameplay and real in-game look. : )
Griffins are indeed thought to be extinct in the Dragon Age world, so the fact that there is one here is rather exciting. Also, I have a feeling that we still might get the 9 companions, because a sneaky thing would be to have two either optional or to come out of left field.
The main problem is not even the artsyle, wich I hope is just for this trailer. Is the whole presentation that tells us nothing about the characters who are a crucial part of any bioware game, the new cast is presented like addition to a Fortnite season and have no personality beyond that they all fight, yes you can't have expository dialogue in a two minute trailer. Wich is why I think the shouldn't have show every companion, show two or three and have them do something of substance than just fight the bad guys
this trailer really reminds me of the Inqiuisition one where all the heroes stand off side by side against the red lyrium dragon, I agree that this trailer got shafted probably because of the development issues and all the layoffs
I have to see my Inquisitor at least once or hear about him something. It would be a shame that if they drop the Inquisitor entirely after the whole stabbing a dagger into Tevinter sh*t.
Being a fan is pain these days I swore to myself a while back to swore to see this story to end but I feel tired of everything bioware has done to this and mass effect maybe good but I don’t care I guess;
"more of you have been waiting for a decade for this" Well, definietly not _this_. I kind of expected that Bioware will chase some 5-6 years old trends (like they tried to chase Skyrim with Inquisition, or Gears of War with Mass Effect), but I really hoped that they use something else inspiration, not Marvel movies.
Everyone has opinions. I liked the trailer and I say this as a long-time fan of the franchise. It could very well be the case that they made the trailer with a light tone and they will end up delivering a game that is darker than anything previous. It's better to downplay and over-deliver, or give a false impression to surprise players when they actually jump into it; subvert expectations. If the trailer gave the impression that it was the darkest game of the franchise yet, there would undoubtedly be those who would still complain that they underdelivered.
I see tons of people complaining about the art style, which is weird to me. Dragon Age always had a stylized look, from Origins to DA2. Inquisition was the only one that went the realistic route due to the engine switch, but even then, it was still more stylized than realistic. The tone of the trailer makes perfect sense to me, too. This isn't supposed to be about a special group, as BioWare has already stated in their blog. They want to focus on a non-special group like in DA2, so this trailer nails the vision they have. Also, the game was planned to be multiplayer, but they changed that early on, as confirmed by multiple journalists now.
I bet you this will be their take on Dark Fantasy with jokes like: "He is standing right behind me, right?" and "He looks very angry, maybe because I shot him in the face"... Really top notch writing is to be expected and I have not even seen the story yet.
imo this didnt change much for me in terms of what Im expecting. Yeah its a big tone shift, but that in itself isnt a good or a bad thing, its a question of whether they sucessfully nail their intended tone, and this trailer just doesnt tell us enough to make a conclusion on that. Dragon Age 2 was already a step towards a more bombastic, comic-book style take on Dragon Age while still delivering a lot of complex themes and story, and they could be going for a similar thing here. Which personally I wouldnt mind. I do understand everyones concerns and Im not saying theyre unfounded, but for me, Im still interested. Besides, we still dont know much about the companion characters, and those have always been the soul of Dragon Age in my opinion. Until we know more about that, I dont think it makes much sense to abandon all hope.
For me, it was more interesting the way you said “interesting” than the trailer itself. Anyway, having followed your playthroughs of the previous games, let’s hope The Veilguard will prove itself a decent game. But then, Varric has a beard now…
The art style isn't bad, but it's very jarring to go from the very realistic artstyle of the past to this. I also wonder how detailed the character creation will be with this art style, I'm expecting each race probably has a few faces to choose from that you cant adjust.
I was hoping for a remaster of the Dragon Age series like they did with Mass Effect. I was aware that they were working on this game but I didn’t expect it to come out any time soon.
the trailer was jarring I agree, but I feel it was bad marketing choice. but based on sneak peak of gameplay coming tomorrow the game looks incredible! Tevinter already looks amazing! :) I hope you cover it Welonz I'd really like to hear your opinions on that!!
I don't think the art style is as bad as most people say, for me, it's mostly the song and the font on the character "title cards" that give it a weird feel. It makes sense to me that they wanted to shift from focussing on the antagonist to the party as they said, but of course the shift in tone is strange at this point because it's this celebratory "hey, here's your crew, folks!" kinda thing without really characterizing them. So as a player I want to be happy about meeting the cast, but I can't really be at this point, they could have teased a bit better.
It hasn't really been "dark fantasy" since origins. "Cartoony" was what the darkspawn looked like in 2. To me, the limited cast feels very much like a return to an origins style focused on deeper story for each of them. Beyond that... Varric looks OLD, Harding looks like she is much more realistic and developed into a dwarven woman of her own.
Ewwww Admittedly, I haven't been the most optimistic about this franchise (and Bioware on the whole) for a long time, but this just insta-killed any remaining interest I might have still had.
Ya que no encuentro videos en español reaccionando y compartiendo sus pensamientos respecto a este trailer, he venido aquí a conocer los pensamientos de otros fans respecto a esto.
You should take time to read the dragon age books written by David Gaider along with the comics their very important to the next game just thought I'd let you know
Because you don't know any games other than a handful of really popular ones. So you think anything with more than 3 colors is fortnite or overwatch. 😂 Go back and actually play origins. It's not dark. It's just as bright and colorful.
After watching this trailer I fear for the sequel of this beloved franchise that I used to like so much... even comparing with Inquisition which is the most recent one there's such a gap in the style that is disconcerting
I remember seeing a leak last year about the game play inside Weisshaupt and I would say yes, the game tone is very different now, the marketing seems very different, and I do have various mixed feelings and hope to be very wrong about this. There is a real story going on with serious stakes and this trailer feels like it downplays it, I hope to be very wrong. I agree gives me Mobile vibes but yes keep these video types going.
i'm waiting for gameplay, no dragon age trailers ever looked like the game so i think it's a vast overreaction for a lot of people not liking it if the gameplay comes and it's like this then sure but bioware games (including mass effect) never look like the trailer and even if it does look like this i'm still going to play it, sometimes games have distinct art styles that are hard to get used to at first but you end up liking them in the end i don't think the cartoon like look represents dragon age well but it's not like mass effect and dragon age are know for their ~beautiful graphics~ to begin with the environments look similar to da:i artstyle so i have a hard time imagining they went for a cartoon look if they didn't do it overall
This will be 5+ years after Trespasser, it's after all the comics and novels. Maybe 10 years? I honestly don't mind the idea of going for stylized art again, DA2 did that so it's also in keeping with tradition of odd-even... but the *narrative* here comes across exactly as some tripe used for a 5v5 backstory, and I think it's a serious misstep. There's no weight in this, and while once again a smaller story would be welcome, they could've literally pulled it tighter from whatever world-scale stuff. I'm honestly not sure even Harding can lead me to like this.
something to keep in mind this seems to be a character introduction trailer so it makes no sense to make it ~dark and gritty~ when you're introducing characters at first i was a bit 'meh' but it's kind of growing on me because it just seems about introducing the crew or w/e (though i think there should be more???) like it's a varric and scout harding headed trailer, you really think it will be ~dark and broody~ when they are two of the most optimistic characters? that being said, it's probably wasn't best to release this trailer first because i think people are thinking the whole tone of this game is going to be bright and cheery when i HIGHLY doubt that considering your in tevinter (the least cheery place) and the big bads (evanuris) dragon age has always had more cheerful/funny parts of it and a companion trailer should be a bit more of that
@@kingafro3453 yeah I mean overall. Obviously there's a few good ones but this shouldn't come as a surprise to fans of the franchise that there's a bad trailer.
I always suspected that the MC might be what I called "The Crater baby". In DA: Origins, there was a cutscene where if you travel across Ferldan long enough you will see a couple standing in the middle of a crater caused by a meteor and they found a baby in the crater and they decided to raise the baby. DA: Origin takes place 10 years before DA: Inquisition and DA: Veilguard most likely takes place 10 something years after DA: Inquisition which means that the child most likely be in his/her's 20's.
Is it just me or did the art style get a bit ... cartoony? I really don't like it. That one guy? (Think it was the necromancer) definitely looked like a cartoon. Won't even talk about the name change. Dreadwolf was cool. Veilguard? Means nothing to anyone. And I hate the music. For some reason it sounds very Lion King to me. (Also, did they put Varrick with Harding so people stop asking to romance him?)
I wasn't impressed with the trailer, but I'm still hopeful. I think each new Dragon Age game has been fairly different from the previous ones. I might end up loving the new style and vibe of Veilguard like I did with Inquisition.
Considering the last 2 Bioware games were flops they abandoned after release im pretty sure this is gonna be a flop and EA will most likely shut Bioware Studios down.
I’m getting andromeda vibes more light hearted with less focus on the story and more focus on the gameplay. Based on leaks they basically overhauled the old combat system for something more engaging. As far as modern/new consumers are concerned they could care less about the story as long as the combat is good
Hate the tone and hate the style of this trailer, doesn't fit at all with the universe and general vibe from the other games. That said I'm not worried yet, anyone can make an unreliable crappy trailer out of good content, so the actual game might still be great and fit Dragon Age, hopefully! We'll see :x

As for the art, I think it's alright even in the trailer, but some ingame pics floating around show it's very much a Frostbite game with similar looks to dai.
Your play thru of Inquisition was my first introduction to the series. If you're going to play this one excited to see it.
The skeletons from the necromancer scene are a good representation on how different the art style looks, not too far off from an OG Fable look.
Im giving it a chance based on the gameplay reveal the art style has change over the years but im cool with it
11:12 - I was watching this video whilst reading about the recent Life Is Strange announcement, and my brain somehow decided that Welonz was referring to Chloe Price here.
11:38 - They've been going on and on about how griffins are extinct in Thedas for SO LONG that I always knew we'd see one eventually!
In engine does not equal in game. There’s a screenshot of the game on Gameinformer and the art style more realistic
Exactly we have yet to see any real in game footage and that troubles me more then this does
Nah its still more stylized in the gameinformer promotional posters aswell. Not as muddy as this reveal trailer sure but very much the same tone and vibe as the reveal trailer.
Still doesn't look good
It's just not hitting
I think the tone of the trailer is mostly coming from the EA marketing team still not understanding people like single player games. Seems like they are trying to appeal to a broad audience
It’s very reminiscent of the breach trailer, introducing characters and creating an anthem to inspire players. I’d say time has passed to because you had “the missing” comics drop as well
this is bioware's last chance but i hope we get good footage on the 11th when they show us more.
2:02 No, Harding wasn't like that previously. She had freckles in Inquisition, but by comparison they were nearly invisible. They were apparent before, but they're extreme now.
Best part of the video was that initial blooper, the trailer was... A thing.
I have no problem with the trailer. I'm waiting for the gameplay stuff tomorrow. THAT will determine how I feel about it.
Its dragon age borderlands!
I hope everybody ( including myself) are wrong about how this trailer made us feel. Because if not....
Finally, after 10 years, ROMANCEABLE (probably) SCOUT HARDING.
One of the books that came out after Inquisition is the one that brought them back.
@@andrewvincent7299 Well, remember that some of us have only experienced the games. I still need to watch the animated show.
I cannot get behind that art style. It makes me want to cry. Where's my Dragon Age?
YES that was a griffon! I want to know more. You can also see it in the trailer fighting alongside Davrin the Warden
Being a fan is pain these days
I swore to myself a while back to swore to see this story to end but I feel tired of everything bioware has done to this and mass effect maybe good but I don’t care I guess;
"more of you have been waiting for a decade for this"
Well, definietly not _this_. I kind of expected that Bioware will chase some 5-6 years old trends (like they tried to chase Skyrim with Inquisition, or Gears of War with Mass Effect), but I really hoped that they use something else inspiration, not Marvel movies.
they already released preview gameplay on their twitter, it's good
Everyone has opinions.
Yeah this is not it whatsoever. Even if the gameplay ends up good, this trailer does nothing to help the game.
HASEGAWA IKUMI FIRST TAKE ON THE SIDE
Fr tho, i bet they're going to sign her anytime soon.
Like an enhanced Clash of Clans cinematics. But I actually like it. I think they are just trying to avoid being "souls like" and "BG3-like"
I feel like the only person who likes the art style? Idk, i've waited 10 years, i'll wait till fall to actually judge it.
Yep she always had dem freckles but apparently inquisition only showed them in her cheeks.
imo this didnt change much for me in terms of what Im expecting.
YES! Would love to hear your thoughts on the gameplay trailer too!
Stop grooming harding ya creep
I mean qunari in 2 didn;t look like grey people with horns, the game while lighter want THIS cartoonish
Dont worry guys... one day soon... the dawn will come.
One day soon, EA will shut down Bioware.
Ewwww
Admittedly, I haven't been the most optimistic about this franchise (and Bioware on the whole) for a long time, but this just insta-killed any remaining interest I might have still had.
The new Darkspawn skull face though is too cartoonish.
Ya que no encuentro videos en español reaccionando y compartiendo sus pensamientos respecto a este trailer, he venido aquí a conocer los pensamientos de otros fans respecto a esto.
There’s a skeleton next to the companions in the photo at the end. Skeleton companion perhaps?
You should take time to read the dragon age books written by David Gaider along with the comics their very important to the next game just thought I'd let you know
Why does it feel like it wants to be Overwatch? I was hoping for something closer to the original DA: Origins. That dark serious fantasy style.
Because you don't know any games other than a handful of really popular ones. So you think anything with more than 3 colors is fortnite or overwatch. 😂
Go back and actually play origins. It's not dark. It's just as bright and colorful.
@@TheJohhnyE Lol I've been gaming since the late 80s. I've played quite a lot, I think.
After watching this trailer I fear for the sequel of this beloved franchise that I used to like so much... even comparing with Inquisition which is the most recent one there's such a gap in the style that is disconcerting
at the very least i’m glad we’re getting griffons finally, it’s been years since they were resurrected in the franchise in “The Last Flight” novel
I agree gives me Mobile vibes but yes keep these video types going.
i'm waiting for gameplay, no dragon age trailers ever looked like the game so i think it's a vast overreaction for a lot of people not liking it
if the gameplay comes and it's like this then sure but bioware games (including mass effect) never look like the trailer
and even if it does look like this i'm still going to play it, sometimes games have distinct art styles that are hard to get used to at first but you end up liking them in the end
i don't think the cartoon like look represents dragon age well but it's not like mass effect and dragon age are know for their ~beautiful graphics~ to begin with
the environments look similar to da:i artstyle so i have a hard time imagining they went for a cartoon look if they didn't do it overall
I'm honestly not sure even Harding can lead me to like this.
something to keep in mind this seems to be a character introduction trailer so it makes no sense to make it ~dark and gritty~ when you're introducing characters
at first i was a bit 'meh' but it's kind of growing on me because it just seems about introducing the crew or w/e (though i think there should be more???)
like it's a varric and scout harding headed trailer, you really think it will be ~dark and broody~ when they are two of the most optimistic characters?
that being said, it's probably wasn't best to release this trailer first because i think people are thinking the whole tone of this game is going to be bright and cheery when i HIGHLY doubt that considering your in tevinter (the least cheery place) and the big bads (evanuris)
dragon age has always had more cheerful/funny parts of it and a companion trailer should be a bit more of that
It makes no sense to have a dark gritty feel in a trailer that's meant to be dark and gritty? That right there is an interesting take 😂
Solas was right 'This world is not worth saving.
People need to keep in mind this series really never had a great trailer that portrays the tone very well. So everyone needs to chill out.
idk DOA 2 trailer was pretty good
DAO trailers were excellent
That's what happens when you let troons devs touch anything. They turn everything into fortnite slop.
Looks terrible, like fortnite
Is it just me or did the art style get a bit ... cartoony? I really don't like it. That one guy? (Think it was the necromancer) definitely looked like a cartoon.
Won't even talk about the name change. Dreadwolf was cool. Veilguard? Means nothing to anyone. And I hate the music. For some reason it sounds very Lion King to me.
(Also, did they put Varrick with Harding so people stop asking to romance him?)
Yeeah, I'm not completely disappointed but definitely in the 'wait for reviews before buying' camp. Or maybe I'll just watch Welonz.
Since when has Welonz done reaction vids? This is amazing lol
She did one for the Death Stranding 2 trailer as well
@@mike_wake Wow ok this is a great thing for her channel for sure. I think she will do one for the new Life is Strange as well.
@@mike_wake And Final Fantasy
I wasn't impressed with the trailer, but I'm still hopeful. I think each new Dragon Age game has been fairly different from the previous ones. I might end up loving the new style and vibe of Veilguard like I did with Inquisition.
Considering the last 2 Bioware games were flops they abandoned after release im pretty sure this is gonna be a flop and EA will most likely shut Bioware Studios down.
This game will take place 10 years after inquisition, we are pretty sure of this because of the comics.
