Nintendo should just release a 2D Mario Game, call it Old Super Mario Bros, charge 60 $ and let fans discover it's a 1:1 remake of the original Super Mario Bros, they can't sue them for false advertising after all.
If its on switch i can get it for free by playing it on pc :)
@Liam Blasko
Nintendo: *WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN*
just play mario maker, there's enough 1-1 remakes there
Ah the famous hl expansion pack new soup
with the star, mario freeman!
Mama Mia, well isn't it Mario freeman! And about time too!
I imagine a nintendo employee watched this and decided to make Super Mario Wonder
Mario ain’t even an atario
2:13 Bro predicted SMB Wonder 2 years before
This is why I love Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze so much
its basically modern 2D Mario’s level design formula turned on its head with multiple mechanics in each level that are combined with each other to create fun, distinct and challenging levels
What you described for your ideal new 2D Mario sounds like a more complex Amazing Mirror.
I mean, amazing mirror's a great game, id love that
I think it’s interesting to compare this with what Mario actually did. Wonder has some slightly non-linear segments, but nothing on the level of Metroid as you suggested. The badges act as the permanent powerups in a way. The theming is creative and the setting new, but again less extreme than you suggested. They did include levels to “take the powerups (badges) to the extreme”. They didn’t change up Mario’s moves at all, but that’s about it.
MARIO YEAH, THAT'S IT BABY, MARIO!!!!!!!!
as Rihanna one tweeted: SUPER FUCKING MARIO!!!!!!
t
MARIO YEAH, THATS IT, BABY MARIO!!!!!!!!!!!
YEAH, WHOOO!!!!!!!!!!! MARIO YEAH, LET'S DO IT WHOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
The kaizo community is really what kept 2D Mario alive to this day. Maybe Nintendo should take some inspiration from some of these hacks/levels and make a new 2D Mario game from it.
They kinda did with the super luigi u, not exactly kaizo tho
I want a Sonic mania for 2D Mario, but with how much Nintendo hates fan-made games, that will never happen
exactly, look what people try to do in mario maker 2!
Personally, i want a new game based on daisy and her kingdom with luigi as the player character
Make it an RPG. Then we could actually flesh out Daisy's personality and role in the Mario universe, so she's not just "feisty orange peach".
Heck, why not just make HER a main character?
"Luigi & Daisy: Sidekick Saga" or whatever.
this shouldve been nslu
not that nslu isnt fun or anything, i love it more than nsmbu lol
@@ShyGuyXXL YEAH, being someone who rescues and fights fits Daisy way more than having the same old role princesses tend to have in stories, which is being just a prop that has to rescued.
What a WONDERful idea
Super Mario Land 2 has the best setting I believe, it has a big variety and is very creative.
We need more fans calling out Nintendo when they slack off and don’t live up to their potential. It’s not nostalgia that makes me say they were putting out almost pure gold up to the 2000s. Nintendo hasn’t stopped making quality games, yet they’re no longer regularly breaking ground. It’s no coincidence they were looked up to by everyone in the industry in the 80s and 90s. The NSMB series is more product than art, I can’t believe the passionate geniuses who laid the foundation for many video game genres were behind it. Don’t even get me started on Pokémon.
mario going on an adventure through nintendo's other franchises sounds like the way to go. there's a thousand different ways that could be done and be cool
you predicted a lot of wonder lol
Purple Colonel is sure going to love the next Mario game...
i liked it a lot :)
It would be cool if they introduced new movement mechanics, like a slide, or a vault. or even new ways to fight enemies, like a dropkick or something.
Make a Metroidvania style Mario game where he would learn these new moves like slide, body slam, uppercut, etc as you progess the game and it would be not only a best seller but I think it would be one of the best Mario games ever created.
Instead of the game taking place in Dracula's castle, it could take place in Bowser's castle.
Or you could have like character switches within the castles, each character with different abilities needed to progress the castle.
Imagine boat levels in jungle worlds instead of airships
just make it control like the 3d games imo
sm64's movement is easy to pick up but has a very high skill ceiling, which makes it really fun to use
A Mario metroidvania? Now that I'd actually bust out the switch for. Good thinking, man, I like it.
Weren't NSMBWii and NSMBU literally the product of Nintendo Development Boot Camp? Maybe just... Let experienced teams make 2d Mario again.
PurpleColonel: talk about Tick Tock Clock as an example of interesting level design
Also PurpleColonel: Tick Tick Clock is Mario 64 at it's Absolute Worst
in this video he said the theme of it was interesting, not the level design
Tick tock clock was my favourite Mario 64 level.
World is basically the golden standard of 2D Mario, and I think going to the bizarre new mechanics and ideas of Mario 2 and the land series, with more inspired ideas and premises beyond Mario’s generic standards
6:45 I WAS JUST THINKING HOW YOUR VIDEO STYLE REMINDS ME OF NERREL WTF
these non-hl vids are under rated
I love your content. Super underrated
Thank you very much!
You read my mind that it sounded like fan game bullshit lol
I agree, but like he said in the video, at least it's creative bullshit.
I agreed all the way until the Super Mario's Wacky worlds bit. Since uh... That's not mario, what you want is a mario themed Metroidvania, I think you should've leaned more in the direction of Rayman or sonic instead of going directly to Hollow knight
You just keep improving, great work, glad to have subbed
Much appreciated! :)
I knew it! You should help your lost brother with his Tingle addiction!
When I heard you mention more moves it reminded me of the mario vs donkey kong series. That series is NSMB, but with the donkey kong game rather than Super mario bros. The coolest thing they added in it by far was the extended moveset, basically most of the things N64 mario could do but in 2D. It sucks to me that they decided to focus on puzzles more than platforming, I would have loved it even more if it was.
The main thing is the new super mario series is mostly about 2D platforming level challenges based on the basic mario formula, not visuals, non-level based mechanics or mechanics from other genres, but they could have levels that utilize different previous level mechanics in unique ways or even use them in new level formats.
Basically the game series isn't meant to be anything much other than simple 2D mario, nor is it trying to be.
BUT something similar to your idea would likely work well as it's own series or game, seperate from the new super mario bros series
some of the music is really good imo. Walking the plains, DS Castle and the lava theme from DS are 3 of my favorites from the entire mario series. not like top 5 or anything, but like top 20
2:04 ah yes, the level that everyone always says the entire game should be, despite the fact that this is exactly what yoshi’s new island looks like and everyone inexplicably hates it.
People don't hate Yoshi's new Island for its painterly art style.
They hate it for its lackluster gameplay, embarassing story, grating and repetitive music, incessant re-use of old ideas, half-baked and unoriginal new ideas, slow movement, and Yoshi's oversized feet.
There's probably more reasons to hate it, but these are the main ones.
Just giving a game a cool art style won't magically make people love it.
Besides, I don't even think the style was pulled off that well.
@@ShyGuyXXL all right, the music is absolutely awful, but the gameplay and level design are still pretty good in my opinion (definitely better than DS). But every time I’ve ever heard someone talk about the game the first thing they always say is usually something like “this game looks and sounds like poop”
I also think it’s better than woolly world (not crafted world or the og island though)
@@VaniRoyal If you enjoyed New Island, more power to you. I, for one, had a whale of a time with Woolly World.
What I'd really love to see is a remake of the original SNES game on Switch, but the characters are drawn in the style of the promotional artwork of the GBA port.
With thicc black outlines and colorful shading.
If you don't know which artwork I mean, just look up "Hookbill the Koopa" on google images and it should be the first result. That's a good example.
If the whole game had that style, it would look gorgeous.
I'd just hope they don't make the enemies look like generic main series Mario enemies again, like they did in New Island. Yoshi's island has such a striking art style, which is very noticable in the boos, for example.
That design was so memorable that it even carried over into Paper Mario, where it prevailed all the way into the Wii era.
But of course, nowadays all the Mario enemies need to look the same, regardless of art style, so they just look like their model was ripped straight out of Mario Party, which looks terribly out of place, in my opinion.
Of course, a new game would be cool too, but if Nintendo keeps outsourcing their Yoshi games, I dunno if I'd wanna risk the IP falling into the hands of Arzest again.
If it was developed in-house, then I'd be up for anything. Plus, we might finally get a soundtrack composed by Koji Kondo or Kazumi Totaka again.
@@ShyGuyXXL I remember than stage design in woolly world to be quite bland, like I wasn’t exploring the levels, just going through them. I also found the style oddly unappealing, literally everything is just made of wool, it only really adds to the blandness off it all, just compare it to Kirby’s epic yarn, that games made mostly of felt with yarn characters and some patch objects.
Also, I did in fact play the Wii U version, but it’s still worth pointing out that I think woolly world looks butt-ugly on the 3DS.
I’m not trying to start an argument or anything, just wanted to get my thoughts out.
BAH BAH
Good video colonel! Love ur content
Thank you :)
Good, now fix the ending of Odyssey.
I want 2D Mario to continue and progress into brand new and wildly different and unique, but I don’t think it will necessarily happen. While the original trilogy and World 1 and 2 were the mainline games at the time, once the N64 hit, the 3D games took over the mainline role. The 3D games continue the trend the 2D ones were on to try new things and be unique, while the 2D ones just became the side projects.
I want a brand new, AAA, and completely unique evolution of the 2D Mario games so badly, made by the current 3D Mario team as they are clearly the main guys behind Mario nowadays, but will it ever happen? I hope so…
I want a metroidvania style Mario game. I have no clue how that doesn't exist. All 2D platformers should try it at least once.
It's more of corporate sterilization. Once something becomes as popular as mario, they sterilize the art style, and gameplay to pull in the most revenue.
2d games anyone can pick up and play, while 3d is alot harder for the casual player or first timers, that's why they can have more creativity.
2d will be locked to new mario style for a long time unfortunately
PurpleColonel: 10:12
Me: $50 where i am how is your price so high?
Canada
This should be popular
Yep man i get it you love pikmin, me too. pikmin its great.
7:11 as a kirby fan i can say this is true.
So the solution is....metroid?
Good video but the last part is a game I would not want to play and reminded me of "Dear Sega:"
Yeah... I mean my point was mostly that its possible for them to do something that isn't the same game again
To make a new Mario bros game, you simply must create a *new* Mario bros game.
I wouldnt be surprised if NSMB was intentionally bland because, internally, its intended simply as a something to release just to show that Mainline Mario series isn't dead.
I honestly think it was just a case of "refining" a pretty neat style for the wii game, then adopting that for all of Mario for far too long.
That is an excuse for the 1st game, but 4 games doing the same???

Great video buddy!
Great video, can you also make one on how to fix my parents marriage? Thanks!
Great suggestion!
It's mario, what's ya expect
if you haven't already, you should check out newer super mario bros
Better solution: bring back Wario Land
How dare you insult the New Super Mario Bros Wii grass theme?
you know marios wacky worlds was an unreleased phillips cdi game right?
Why in the hell isn't there a metroidvania style mario game? Instead of Mario 64, that's what we should have got. Just makes too much sense not to! I find it hard to believe that no one has thought of that yet, mind blowing!
Metroidvanias are all relatively similar, and Metroid already exists, so Nintendo making a new Mario one wouldn't be all that great. But by no means should it have been instead of Mario 64. That was the beginning of a new age of not only Mario, but gaming as a whole.
@@sillyman2 Mario 64 for me signifies the beginning of the fall of video games. It wasn't a proper sequel and in my opinion games have gotten worse since then.
Id say of all the metroidvania games out there, ironically the metroid series isn't something I have any desire to play.
I think a metroidvania Mario game would easily blow that out of the water, wouldn't even be close. It would probably be the best Mario game ever created.
What really blows my mind is that it was never even thought of or even considered but then again Nintendo doesn't really make many good decisions compared to their competition.
@@johnnyslokes2712 It probably has been thought about once or twice. But personally, I just don't think that's a very good idea. I can't even imagine how it work or anything. Metroidvanias aren't exactly something that can be translated to. If you want a metroidvania, you'll need a whole new IP. Also, if Nintendo doesn't make as good decisions as its competition, why is it the most successful gaming company?
@@sillyman2 Well I just highly disagree, I feel like every platformer could be metroidvania and should at least try it once.
You clearly just haven't thought about it enough if that's what you think because it wouldn't be very hard to implement or you just generally don't enjoy those type of games.
Wouldn't need a new IP, it could be a spin-off. Spin-offs are still part of the same IP. Mario Cart, Mario tennis, thats all under the Mario IP.
And I'd argue that Sony and Microsoft are much more successful companies compared to Nintendo, they also make a lot more and are worth a lot more. They pretty much bullied Nintendo away from core gamers, which is why Nintendo makes these gimmicky consoles for the past few generations. Just a different demographic.
@@sillyman2 Most well done Mario fan hack games are better than Super Mario World and that was the best Mario game to ever be officially released.
One of those hacks was a metroidvania style and it was great but it was an unfinished demo so idk
I think Nintendo should releases a new Mario maker but for 3d games
What if Nintendo hired some of the guys who made custom NSMBW levels of gargantuan proportions?
They'd have to admit the people making mods aren't literally criminals for once.
@@PurpleColonel Sega really outshines Nintendo there. You make a fangame for a Sega IP and people generally enjoy it? Here comes a job offer. But nintendo straight up carpet bombs your work.
@@neuronoc.7343 That's because soj doesn't give a shit about that anymore, and because they're not making games anyway. plus they let mania exist so they can push and appeal to the game journo narrative of "only classic is good rough transition to 3d"

I think one problem is the piwer-up system.
It seems they barely design any unique levels around power-ups, because if you get hit you'd lose the abilities, so it breaks the level. Want a level around freezing Cheap Cheaps? Well you'll have to make it accessible to players who may lose the Ice Flower, unless you want it to be a one-hit level, or unless you want to continuously give out Ice Flowers, meaning you could hypothetically damage boost and cheese it. There are work arounds and you could work the idea that it'd be harder to beat without the power-up, but the system is too flawed in my opinion.
Maybe a approach similar to 3D Mario could work, courses built around temporary power-ups, or even how 3D has an inbetween with level specific power-ups. Maybe a Shovel Knight or Mega Man approach with equipable power-ups with coin fuel. They could do it like Kirby where there's elements built around a power-up and you have to gain power-ups from stages, but your health is somewhat independent, only losing a power-up once you take too much damage.
Love this vid !
man this video rocks!
Mario???!!!! From the cool half life guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Epic! Love all your vids man :)
They may be the same but they’re good though
Players: I disagree with many of Nintendo's decisons.
Nintendo: Fuck you, let's see you do better.
Players: *Does better*
Nintendo: *DMCAs* THIS IS NOT THE WAY YOU ARE MEANT TO PLAY THE GAME!
Reminder that Super Mario Bros. X 2 is a thing, and far better than Mario Maker could ever be (people actually make full adventures, sometimes with unique gimmicks or bosses, rather than just kaizo bullshit made to be hard for the sake of being hard). Because it'd be a dream come true for me if people just stopped supporting Nintendo and telling them that doing this to their fans is okay.
I only play Mario hacks and fan made games. I wouldn't even consider a game by Nintendo. How is it that Super Mario World on the SNES have better graphics than any other Mario game they make on any of the newer consoles?
I want a Mario game with SMW graphics but is a metroidvania, obtaining different power ups and abilities to progress through Bowser's castle.
@@johnnyslokes2712 You know, I bet you could probably make something like that in SMBX2. I don't know *exactly* what you're envisioning, but if the normal editor can't do it, then at the very least, lua scripting lets you do just about anything if you have the patience to learn.
@@johnnyslokes2712 You dont like the 3d games?
@@guyfierimtwi There are some 3D games that I like but for the most part, no. Hate the graphics, especially on anything NIntendo. For the most part games that made the switch from 2D to 3D I don't like at all.
But I do like Ratchet and Clank, GTA, far cry, Maximo but I can't say I love them or prefer them over 2D games. It's an unpopular opinion, I get it but I just think some IPs that jumped to 3D should have stayed 2D, particularly platformers, not a fan of 3D platformers at all.
@@graysongdl Sorry, I missed your comment.
I'm not familiar with what SMBX2 is? But I am intrigued.
I was able to make like a mini metroidvania In super Mario maker but I couldn't beat it in the max time they give you
nintendo when seeing this : yuh how about we dont do this well just give you the mario allstars collection WITHOUT mario world for 60€ :)
Nice video! :)
I want Mario fixed like me
I want an incredibly difficult Mario game where Waluigi is the played character. He'd have the flutter jump of Luigi and be very slippery. Levels would be fast paced and unique, powerups wouldn't give you extra hit points and there would be waves and waves of enemies launching projectiles projectiles you. Kind of like something like cuphead.
Just go the Spider Verse route. Have it more paint style
very interesting...but it's illegal and wrong to upload here without copyright. Even if it is only for entertainment, it is still wrong
Hey colonel
Hi
oh i thought this was just a half-life channel lol
NEW MARIO VID!
At this point the mario fan games (the only good ones that are left anyways) are better than these "new" 2d games
Nintendo is incapble of making a good 2D Mario game, the graphics look like plastic. It really needs to be hand drawn or just use the sprites from the SNES because it had better graphics than it does now and thats just facts.
A metroidvania style Mario game should exist, but apparently no one is smart enough for that to exist.
Game freak has always been lazy, the only game i can think of is pokemon X and Y. Thats it

Most nentendo games are boring for me
Perhaps taking ideas from other 3D (or 2D) Mario games and putting them into NSMB could make an actually good game. Then again, that's also asking Nintendo to care enough to look back on what they've made and see what was good and what was bad. The most they ever do is port super mario bros onto every goddamn console they make.
im so early my wife is still alive
Also it'd be great, if Mario's jumps wouldn't be so floaty or movement like hes walking on ice, and their only fix is by giving you like 20 1ups per level, it's idiotic and not fun at all
Theres so many platformers who have amazing controls, why does 2D Mario which is supposed to be the granddaddy of them all, has the worst movement controls of them all?
The only reason New Super Mario Bros is called "New" is because they hadn't released a new 2D mario game since 1992.
The ironic thing is that Super Mario 3D Land feels like more of a perfect homage to 2D Mario than the later New Super Mario Bros. games (though Super Mario 3D World is not as good as 3D Land and is just extremely mediocre and sanitized compared to its predecessor).
3d world is miles better than 3d land
this video was painful to watch honestly, you shoot yourself in the foot more times than one. you complain about mechanics being dropped after one level, then explain a mechanic in NSMBDS that gets reused later on. mario is a series known for sticking to its status quo, i agree that the games should shift up their visual style every once and a while but the core gameplay is incredibly solid and underappreciated.
in this video all you try to do is combine 3d and 2d mario when the two are meant to be separate. 2d mario is for that simpler platforming action, whilst 3d is for the more experimental gameplay. it doesn't help that there's such an evident nostalgic bias here, as games like super mario bros. 3 which do the same things (albeit with less polished level design) gets a pass while genuinely great games like new super mario bros. wii get shafted.
EDIT: all it seems you want is for mario to not be mario, and that's just baffling to me. if you don't like mario, that's a shame. you just don't like mario, it doesn't have to change to fit your view.
if Mario stuck to status quo then a 3D Mario game would never even exist. Mario's main problem is they abandoned 2D in favor of 3D and imo just doesn't look or play good even now when they do go and try and make a 2D game, the characters look like plastic.
@@johnnyslokes2712 bro "2d mario doesn't play good anymore"? have you played super mario bros or super mario bros 3? those games do not hold up when it comes to controls, whereas the new games are much more fluid and have alot more options.
the point is that the 2D mario games are perfectly servicable since mario is meant to be a simple gateway into platformers, not an extreme overcomplicated masterclass of design. 2D mario is so entertaining because the levels are so greatly intricate.
and it is no different to how it was on the NES and SNES. i don't see any difference to SMB3's stage-like theme or SMW's dinosaur island compared to NSMBU's distant-land aesthetic.
@@ven9562 dinosaur land has so much secrets in its better layered level design, had more unique locales and added more unique enemies and obstacles, and you could get anywhere in the game if you were good through the star road. The secret exits made it fun. Nsmb is the same as world but with a worse artstyle, the world map isn't that interconnected anymore, with most secret exits just bringing to cannons, and the worlds in each game are always the same theme in the same order. And the powerups are not used to their full potential aside from Luigi u.
And kirby is an entry level platformer but it has much more complex level design
the power-ups aren't even used to their full potential in SMB3, SMW or SML2... while i agree that SMW has the better world map, NSMB also has branching pathways with world 4 and 7 from NSMBDS, several worlds from NSMBW and the interconnected worlds of NSMBU.
and the "worse artstyle" part is subjective. while i will always prefer mario spritework, i can't just say that the new super mario bros games look bad. NSMBU looks stunning with its HD visuals if you look at it for more than a second.
