I do educational posts and help history/archeology channels with their vids on Mesoamerica, so here's a breakdown on all of Tlalocmon's design elements and themes, since Bandai actually did a weirdly good job doing research and there's a lot of stuff to dissect, even if I know you're more a v-pet guy then a design one! As many people have noted, Tlaloc is the Aztec rain and storm god, but he actually belongs to a broader archetype of Mesoamerican rain gods, all of whom originate from Were-Jaguar sculptures made by the Olmec, one of if not the earliest Mesoamerican civilization. Over time, the wide eyes and thick eyebrows, snarled lips, and bared teeth of were-jaguar iconography morphed into circular "goggle" eyes, upturned/prehensile upper lip or hooked nose, and fangs, elements later Mesoamerican rain gods variously had like Tlaloc (Aztec, though the term is sometimes used for earlier versions of the god in Central Mexico such as at Teotihuacan), Chaac (Maya), Cocijo (Zapotec), etc. This Jaguar connection is probably why Saberleomon is one of the Jogresss pieces! Those facial features,, especially the goggles and fangs, are Tlaloc's most distinctive visual trait, though Tlaoc is also frequently seen wielding axes or wavy staffs which either evoke or are outright serpents, representing lightning bolts. He also tends to have specific head ornaments, namely headgear or a diadem/"crown" with vertical spikes pointing up around the rim alongside white heron feathers, and "fan" or fin shaped ornaments to the sides of the head (though some other gods also wore these). I BELIEVE, the former piece of headwear is known as Aztatzontli or Quauhtzontli, but that may be a different, similar garment... ...And if you look at Tlalocmon's design (especially the higher res image on Wikimon) all of these elements are there! Tlalocmon has large eyes, plus large circular jewelry ornaments to the sides of his head, and below that also has a jewelry backdrop which forms a mouth, and his hanging horn/claw ornaments (two large and red, and two smaller ones) form "fangs". He also has an Aztatzontli diadem, with Bandai even making the ""spikes" look like the arrow shaped sun ray elements seen on stuff like the Aztec Sun Stone (tho Tllaoc wasn't tied to those) and Tlalocmon wields twin staffs with wavy tail ends (which even seem to have rattlesnake rattles) and a tip which looks like a snake mouth! By virtue of being a rain god, Tlaloc was also often tied to agricultural fertility, as well as Clouds, Mountaintops, etc. This is in part reflected by his wife being Chalchiuhtlicue, goddesses of rivers, springs, and lakes (which too, were tied to hilltops: The word for "City-state" in Nahuatl is Altepetl, or water-hill!), who in turn was associated with jade, a material indicating preciousness, agriculture and maize/corn (Tlaloc is also seen carrying Maize stalks), as well as water. Both Jade and Turquiose shared those associations as Blue-Green stones (Tho the latter was also tied to fire and lighting) and Tlaloc was also tied with both, often wearing them or blue-green clothing, as Aztec kings did. Both gods also presided over Tlalocan, an afterlife inhabited by those who had died from water, lighting, or specific ailments (see below), and was a lush, tropical paradise of flowers, fruits trees, and many rivers, lakes, springs, etc. Many hilltop botanical gardens built as estates for Aztec rulers such as at Chapultepec and Texcotzinco (which even sourced water for it's fountains, baths, and gardens from "Mount Tlaloc", sort of like Mount Olympus as a real mountain with a mythical counterpart) were were meant as earthly recreations of Tlalocan. Tlalocmon's foliage is likely meant to represent this connection to agriculture and plant life, and his blue skin to those color associations Lastly, Also in/tied to Tlalocan and Tlaloc were the Tlaloque, lesser water divinities who were attendants of Tlaloc (or other incarnations of him). They were small, like dwarfs or children or otherwise having physical body limitations or disabilities (hunchbacks, etc), all of which were groups of people sacrificed to Tlaloc, though people with Dwarfism were also seen as seers and used as advisors due to this divine connection, much like how they were kept as both court jesters and advisors by European kings. Sort of a dark subject, but it likely explains why Tlalocmon's body is so diminutive. So, to recap: - Tlalocmon's large eyes and big circular jewelry pieces represent the "goggles": Tlaloc has (and even Tlalocmon's actual eyes are large) - The hanging horn/claw jewelry pieces represents Tlaoc's fangs, with other jewlery bits providing a backdrop of an open mouth/lips behind them - Tlalocmon has Aztatzontli headgear with the vertical spikes, and even (somewhat inappropriately) - As a result of those 3 things, his whole body sort of looks like a big floating Tlaloc mask from a distance! - Tlalocmon's diminutive body is likely a reference to his association with dwarfs and children - His staffs evoke serpents like Tlaloc's snake staffs, and them emitting electricity and water fits him being a storm god - The plant life is probably a representation of Tlaloc's connection to agriculture and Tlalocan being a lush tropical paradise - Saberleomon as one of his Jogress components is likely a reference to Tlaloc and other Mesoamerican rain gods originating from Olmec Were-Jaguars. That's a pretty big amount of visual symbolism! I don't even think any of the Royal Knights or Olympos 12 have this many real references to the legendary beings they're based on. I sort of wonder if maybe I'm reading into some of this too much, but too much of it lines up to be entirely coincidences. That said, disregarding the symbolism, I think the design at a glance is quite hard to intuitively read: The amorphous shape of the leaves combined with his tiny body means he has no distinct silhouette. Perhaps more importantly, I dislike how a lot of his clothing and ornaments is clearly meant to look either dull and like ruins, or like primitive "tribal" garb. This is a common issue with Mesoamerican things in media, but historically these civilizations had massive cities with richly painted building, aqueducts, etc, and wore fine cloaks, blouses, tunics, armored jackets and warsuits, etc with rich garish colors and elaborate jewlery made of gold, jade, turquoise, etc. Iridescent, glittering feathers and shells were often used, too. So I wish his vines/foliage was less a big wide blob and more of a thinner plume (think Mercurymon/Merukimon's hair) so it didn't occupy so much of his silhouette, plus had proportionally bigger limbs/body: Still small, but say more akin to Lanamon/Ranamon so you can still clearly make the limbs out at a glance. Finally, having gleaming, pristine garments, with the cloth looking fine and multicolored and patterned, with rich blues, greens, and reds, with gold, jade, and turquoise jewlery, etc.
Because those are not mainline devices, remember these take after Tamagotchi, and in Tama fashion you get a roster for each ver/wave. Anniversary devices are special editions. The idea is picking the version with the roster you like the most, or if you're a collector (or crazy like me) you blow your cash on all of them 😂
Would buy all three if I could, but I just can't justify it...wish they would give us the whole roster when they open these kinds of things for preorder.
@@Salty010 Yeah, that is what I'm thinking at the moment, since this first wave uses VB Digimon as the special guests, and Pulsemon, Espimon and Gammamon are the remaining Digimon designed specifically for the VB. Plus I feel like Gammamon's Siriusmon line is a good fit for Virus Busters, and Espimon fits well into Metal Empire. Pulsemon for Wind Guardians is a little bit of a stretch, but I guess his lightning and thunder motif could fit in a way.

I would definitely wait for when more of the roster (besides the assumed evolutions) have been revealed until I make a purchase, but since the og Pendulum series has some of the best rosters in my opinion, it might be worth the hassle.

might be retro bait, but I never had any digimon device growing up and I recently got my dmx's and a penz nightmare soldiers after I got the vital bracelet and now pre-ordered the penC nightmare soldiers. I always liked the idea of virtual pets (had a chao on my vmu, had the pikachu color and later the pokewalker) but never really got into tamagotchi idk why. Then I found out about digimon vpets and that the franchise I loved as much as pokemon growing up actually started as vpets and I was hooked.

I just ordered the second special selection DIM for the vital bracelet BE . I order DIMs for Loogamon and Pulsemon I don't know if I want to order the other Seekers dims because the kind of lackluster and the only Digimon I want if Airdramon sucks for that dim.
I couldn't decide which to pick, so paid for all 3.😅 I hope the Metal Empire gets more Ultimates AKA Megas. Still waiting for the rest of the Colors V3,V4, and V5. Hopefully they'll get here before this month ends.😬

Nope! Digimon V-Pets focus on the raising aspect, not collection, so the goal is to keep it alive as long as possible and then once it does inevitably die, to raise a new one.

I was thinking, why not you make a counter for mistake care, overfeeds, overdose protein, number of trainings done, number of trainings won, battle done ecc (I tried only the color version vpet) a page or an app where you can keeping the count and fill out what you need and what you have done? It could be amazing and very useful
I just got my gen 2 vpet set the other day, preordering the pendulums along with the pulsemon dim this week. Im hoping the old pendulum z's ordered from alibaba didnt get lost in the mail. I already have the white vbusters pendulum z from wave 2 of z, need to get the other 2 from that set, and then i want to get a 20th anniversary pendulum black/silver to mod. Oh, and the japanese exclusive vpet x's. The struggle of being a hopeless collector.
I will say though, as a Tamagotchi Uni enjoyer, they really need some of those features on a modern digivice. I want to love this product, but can’t help but feel it could be so much better.

I never had an og pendulum and to finally be able to get it with some additional features and digimon is a treat, definitely going for Nightmare Soldiers love the shell and rosters deep savers look good too roster wise but not feeling the orange trims on the shell. Humulos, just think of the orange on the DSa as being a reference to Zudomon and maybe even Seadramon. I would personally prefer the NSo colors for NSp, as those are obviously Kuwagamon colors (red shell, black accessories; come on); i mean, it fits just as well if not better than the current ones, right? Then, the blue trimmings of the NSp can go to DSa, and the remaining shell and trimmings can go to NSo, whether it works or not because why should NSp be the one with weird colors?
Happy to see Angoramon on a device! A question about the colour devices, does the dot sprite display on the screen when it's not actively being used or does it turn off when not in use? I have the original nature spirits pendulum and I love the always on screen.
Honestly, it's more than I wanna spend.... but just like you have a soft spot for sea digimon, I've got a soft spot for virus, mystical, and darker digimon, sooooo I'm ordering Nightmare Soldiers. It might cost me a bit of credit card debt when all is said and done, but I'd regret it 6 months from now when I'm not dealing with college eating up my work hours and I can't get ahold of one xD
I thought long and hard and I just had to buy all 3. I've been skipping out on releases lately because I'm not the biggest fan of the original in terms of gameplay...but the pendulum has been my favorite ever since I got my hands on a Z...I had to!! Great content as always!
It's nice the Pendulum is getting the Color treatment but I'm not getting them because the price is quite high. Another major reason is I got crazy and bought all 6 versions of Pendulum Z.
Having the Kabuterimon line is pure nostalgia from DMW1 so I had to pre order nature spirites..just bought a digimon vpet color version 4 and 5 for me and the mrs. Think im done after this lol

Pendulum is my best childhood memory so this is not a hard decision to order all of them Now I am looking forward to the other three already. I wish they put color Digimon vpet as a regular toy in store though
Absolutely hate when Bandai does a 3 release because international shipping restrictions on Lithium Ion battery devices means I’ll have to get 2 different shipping boxes and pay for shipping twice. Because they won’t allow all three devices in one shipment. This happened to me with the latest round of Digimon Colors. It’s such a cash grab by governments to force additional import duties.

I was really hoping for Lopmon. Lopmon is a favorite of mine, and his split paths of digi-volution is really neat.

I never had an og pendulum and to finally be able to get it with some additional features and digimon is a treat, definitely going for Nightmare Soldiers love the shell and rosters deep savers look good too roster wise but not feeling the orange trims on the shell. I'm very interested to see what happens with the other 3 versions that will more than likely happen aswell down the line

Humulos, just think of the orange on the DSa as being a reference to Zudomon and maybe even Seadramon.
I would personally prefer the NSo colors for NSp, as those are obviously Kuwagamon colors (red shell, black accessories; come on); i mean, it fits just as well if not better than the current ones, right? Then, the blue trimmings of the NSp can go to DSa, and the remaining shell and trimmings can go to NSo, whether it works or not because why should NSp be the one with weird colors?
Right on no western release at a reasonable price im guessing.
I wish I could get all of them but I'm just getting NSo for the time being. Really hyped for the ME release.
Happy to see Angoramon on a device! A question about the colour devices, does the dot sprite display on the screen when it's not actively being used or does it turn off when not in use? I have the original nature spirits pendulum and I love the always on screen.

Honestly, it's more than I wanna spend.... but just like you have a soft spot for sea digimon, I've got a soft spot for virus, mystical, and darker digimon, sooooo I'm ordering Nightmare Soldiers. It might cost me a bit of credit card debt when all is said and done, but I'd regret it 6 months from now when I'm not dealing with college eating up my work hours and I can't get ahold of one xD
Hoping for the D1 version, love transparent vpets. The glow in the dark pendulum version 3 are also great.

I thought long and hard and I just had to buy all 3. I've been skipping out on releases lately because I'm not the biggest fan of the original in terms of gameplay...but the pendulum has been my favorite ever since I got my hands on a Z...I had to!! Great content as always!
It's nice the Pendulum is getting the Color treatment but I'm not getting them because the price is quite high. Another major reason is I got crazy and bought all 6 versions of Pendulum Z.

Ultimately, I think these are going to be superior to the gameplay of the Pen20, especially if you don't want every field.

Absolutely hate when Bandai does a 3 release because international shipping restrictions on Lithium Ion battery devices means I’ll have to get 2 different shipping boxes and pay for shipping twice. Because they won’t allow all three devices in one shipment. This happened to me with the latest round of Digimon Colors. It’s such a cash grab by governments to force additional import duties.
HobbyGenki and Zenin don't have those restrictions, so you may want to check those
