  • The questions I get more than any other are nearly always regarding how to deal with bigger, stronger opponents…and it’s kind of a weird question, because I always try to use things that work on everyone. The main answer is you have to be more precise with your technique when dealing with bigger people because there’s less room for mistakes and more severe punishment for flawed technique.
However, if I had to address the technical aspect of dealing with bigger opponents, I would say that understanding frames is one of the most crucial things. So in this video, I show one of the best positions to illustrate strong and active framing, which is the knee shield position. I hope this helps.

Your videos are so great. A lot of guys can do those techniques but what separates you from them is your breakdown and explanation. That is an art form in of itself and definitely goes a long way in helping us understand why and how.

Love this video. I’m a 40 year old white belt and I’m just trying to get the basics and I find myself in this position more then anything. It’s definitely frustrating because they’re just push my shield down and pass.

Man I want to train Jiu Jitsu so bad, you younger guys are so lucky to have this. If this was around when I was young, my life would have turned out different. I am 48 and would have started years ago but I can not afford it.

I love that path to the back from the leg weave. I've been working on my half guard for quite a while, and it's never occurred to me to try to use their pass attempt to facilitate my own arm drag. That's a thing of beauty.

Great video, I have such short legs, closed guard is almost impossible against anyone but females and small children so, the knee shield is something I've been playing around with.

I really love watching your videos!! It helps me a lot to survive everyday in my jujitsu class! Sir! These days I am really in to all the skills related into lapels. Especially taking guards with lapels. Would you kindly make some videos about lapel guard and some submissions? Thank you so much!!!

Have you ever thought about making a video about double/simultaneous attacks? I guess a common one would be a triangle / armbar from guard.

Hardest part is getting the undertook when they post on your body and head and push you back down.
