    Developed by Rutubo Games and oublished by Sega in 1995
    The 32X conversion of After Burner might look visually impressive, but the frame rate was cut to 30 FPS, which makes it too sluggish to enjoy properly.
    The Sega Saturn version is easily the better of these 32-bit console versions.

    I think it’s time we all admit the 32x was kinda cool

      The games were just bad mostly. Home brews would shine on the hardware today if done correctly.

      Not even close. All it did was keep the genesis on life support. Terrible system with terrible games.

    Man. I've never regret a single quarter spent on this game. Just as much fun to watch

    Better than the Genesis version. Perfect port.

      Aside from the 30fps cap...

    Fantastic. The Mega Drive already had the best playing and sounding version of After Burner II so far but with the expanded capabilities of the 32X it comes much closer to the arcade original visually speaking. So good!

    Very impressive. For the time, it'd be the best port of After Burner II you could get, even with the 30 FPS limit. 32X could've done 2D and "super scaler" games to rival the X68000. If only its potential were used more often.
    A re-do of Super Monaco GP with graphics closer to the arcade and all the tracks of the MD version would've been amazing.

    Back when the 32X came out I always held hope that we would get an Outrun. Especially after playing Space Harrier and Afterburner. But it never happened..

    That is clearly Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise at the end. Just like the original Master System ending had Tom Cruise and Tom Skerritt. Probably couldn't do that now with all the copyright infringement. Great game

    The very nice Easter Egg of a motorcycle running along side of the plane taking off of the base is really cool.

    And to think the 32x had no sprite scaling or rotating ship. This was all done by the CPU

      Well, it's all handled in software

    The best video game soundtrack of all time. It pumped my adrenaline as s kid in the arcade sit in cabinet and makes my nostalgia tingle now as a man in my 40s. Of all the format's of the 8 and 16 bit era, the one vital thing home conversions lacked was the super hot soundtrack. Graphics were generally sluggish but you knew it was Afterburner. The music was what made the game. At the end of the Sega Genesis/Megadrive's lifecycle the 32x add on finally nailed it. It's a shame the 32x arrived as late as it did.

    Really impressed by this version. Having played the arcade version just recently, I think I would have a really hard time telling them apart in a side by side comparison. The 32X looks almost identical (landing sequence was where I could tell them apart), sound is 1:1 the same, there's absolutely no difference. Never liked the Genesis/MegaDrive port tbh. To me the PC Engine version always felt closer to the original than any other port at the time.

    Wow! The music in this game sounds better than doom on the Sega 32x, and this game is on the Sega 32x as well, that proves that the Sega 32x can have good sound

  • @TheAxelay

    It's very well done for a 1994/95 version. Sure comparing it to the 3DS, Saturn or Dreamcast might not be such a great idea here?! But for the time and the mb's it consisted off, it's hellva great conversion that really keeps the spirit here...I don't have tons of space on my laptop but this version does it for me....I remember it hounded pretty badly by alot of gaming magazines which was totally unjustified sigh...

    Eh, I have to disagree with this BTW:
    "which makes it too sluggish to enjoy properly"
    Then what about all those Amiga games that run at 25 FPS or below? :P
    Sure the Saturn version of After Burner II runs smoother than the 32X version but the Saturn is a full fifth gen system whereas the 32X is an add-on to a fourth gen system, the Mega Drive, and as such, this port is a real treat and same goes for several other 32X ports or exclusives such as Space Harrier, Virtua Fighter or Stellar Assault! (and the fact that the 32X had such a short commercial lifespan makes these games even more impressive. The developers might had some crazy schedules :v)

      @AL82RetrogamingLongplays  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not saying it's terrible, but you really need the higher frame rate to help discern what's happening on the screen, react to enemies etc. The Saturn version manages to achieve 60 FPS and is all the better for it.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Well, the point is that you don't necessarily "need" higher frame rate as the 32X version is very impressive yet totally playable and just shows how far Sega pushed the Mega Drive, but the game is logically even better on Saturn, being a full fifth gen console vs. a fourth gen combo [Mega Drive + 32X].

    Did the 32X only expand graphics? The sound still sucks like most MD games.

    • @mortenera2294

      What the fuck are you saying? No way in hell can the Mega Drive sound this good

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tahan9323 It has the Yoshi Island problem: voice samples that ruin the music. What the heck do they say?
      And it misses the lead guitar. Pretty quintessential when it comes to After Burner (even thought he arcade game misses the lead guitar as well!)

    • @tahan9323
      @tahan9323 ปีที่แล้ว

      @lovemadeinjapan What in the hell are you talking about? Questions. How close is this version's sound to the arcade? Are you aware that arcade hardware was more powerful than home systems at the time? And, I hope you know the comparison should be how close the 32X version came to the arcade? That's the litmus test!

    • @lovemadeinjapan
      @lovemadeinjapan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tahan9323 I just like the PC Engine rendition of the sound track much better than Arcade+MD. It is closer to the in my opinion definitive version: the one in Sonic Racing Transformed.
