    Worked for the Air Force in Anchorage, AK. My hotel room window on the base faced the runway. Was awoken each morning to jets taking off at 5:30 am. No complaints, what a way to start the day.

      I was there with MAG-11, HMS-11 in 1980. I remember when the Black Knights (VMFA-314) got the first F/A-18s in the Corps. What a show that was! It seems everybody in the Corps was there. You could tell the 323 F4s by the two black stripes and white diamonds on their tails. I think they’re flying F-35Cs now.

      @@ejs129 They had to. Too bad, right? The jet fuel they dumped back in the day ruined it.
      I was there in 1981. I considered it one of the best duty stations besides Quantico.

      @@justinandersondrivehomerad647 A few years ago when the horizon plane was hijacked in seattle, they scrambled the jets from portland and I was at work. I believe 4 took off and were hauling ass to seattle. When they are not just doing patrol or training, they are STUPIDLY loud. Most of the time, it just drowns out anything else nearby you normally hear but when they take off for a reason, it is deafening.

    • @martintheiss743
      @martintheiss743 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      These pilots are trained to concentrate on the action and the needs of flight. They are just "showing the flag" as forces members put it. Just wanting the Portland area to know that if something happened USMC Miramar will send fighters within a surprising amount of time if you cause trouble. Note the Southwest engine failure just now. The woman pilot commentating for the plane just happened to be one of a few American military pilots and she certainly showed her skill and grace in a crisis keeping to standard FAA communications with air traffic control centers until she was safe. that is skill.

    I remember living in St. Louis in 89 and going to Lambert Field to watch them test fly F18 Hornets out of McDonald Douglas, what a noise an afterburner takeoff makes. You watch them for hours. There was a parking place at the west end of the main runways they called The PVA (Public Viewing Area) Commercial airliners would come and go about every 90 seconds 200 feet over our heads. There was always a couple dozen families there watching. People would go there on their lunch hours.

    • @davidknight3249
      @davidknight3249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Simple version. F16 single engine fighter bomber. F15C dual engine air superiority fighter. F15E dual engine fighter bomber. F22 is dual engine stealth replacement for F15. F35 is single engine stealth replacement for the F16, F18 and AV8B-harrier. F22 and F35 have "supercruise" capability-can fly supersonic without afterburner. The F16, F15 and F18 need afterburner to fly supersonic. The stealth feature and newer radars of the F22 and F35 give them an advantage making them almost invisible to enemy radar.

      “They” indeed do let them. I mean you need an 8000 ft runway to get easily approved, but on weekends we could take the jets to whatever runways people wanted to generally. Would get out training sorties on the way. But unless we had a hometown reason to stop, our selections were to maximize good times off. Our typical weekend flying out of Miramar was PHX, LAS, FAT based on training ranges and good overnights :)

      Shyam as a direct answer to your question it takes hard maintenance and difficult logistics to maintain a base of even 3 aircraft at a particular location. Keep in mind the USMC would prefer a commanding officer for a unit including support services to be a former active pilot. Most of the details are classified for good reason but even the most basic needs and mechanical support would multiply mechanical and base support staff quickly with just a few planes.
