Ferguson 35 Tractors Ploughing In The 1950's

  • This footage is comprised of two separate clips. They both look like staff from Geo. Henderson's Ltd demonstrating or testing out a new plough.
The tractor in the first clip has the same Geo. Henderson Ltd trade plate 010 KS as seen before.
The first clip shows a four-cylinder Ferguson 35 tractor, from between 1956 and 1958, with a Ransomes TS64 with SCN bodies - chances are the tractor is grey and gold.
The second colour clip is also a Ferguson 35, grey and gold in colour, from around 1956/57.
I am reliably informed that the two videos show the difference between a well set up tractor and plough, and a badly setup pairing - In the black & white video it is wet, and the driver is not struggling that much, however, he does have his wheel strake out.
The original footage from the 1950's was of a pretty low quality.
The resolution was only 720 x 576, there was a lot of grain and noise, the black & white footage had a yellow cast throughout, and the colour footage had a pink/purple colour cast throughout.
After getting the original footage digitized, I have edited and enhanced it using modern software. I have upscaled it, denoised, sharpened, and removed the colour casts as best I can, rebalancing the colours and contrast closer to how it looked originally.
I have not suddenly become a tractor/plough expert overnight - my thanks to Kev Welsh and his friends from the Border Vintage Agricultural Association for helping me out with information!

I bought a 1957 ferguson diesel in 1978 for £600 worked it weekly sold it for £650 in 1987. Fuel lift pump lever broke, metal fatigue.. No other trouble. It was smoking at the end and would never start in frosty weather. Tried to buy it back. It is now like new and not for sale.

Glad you enjoyed the video Bob, and it brought back some nice memories - it was some tractor. Plenty more videos to come on the channel, just been a bit busy with other stuff just now.

Andy, in the first clip he is pulling a two furrow plough whereas in the second colour clip it is a three furrow plough which for a tractor of that HP is 50% more to pull and hence I think is why it is struggling.

Aye, that could well be the answer Bryan, underpowered tractor for the job.

The plough is set really quite deep as you can see from the lean of the driver,I should say that 3furrow is only 10 inch base so well within the hp range of the FE35 if set correctly in medium land and indeed we ploughed one way ( down hill ) with a TED20 but if the going got difficult we did take the rear furrow off.
