The dog ran into the road and we ran out to try to stop the car but it didn’t see us and we were only a few feet away when the dog was hit. The car had been going about 45 mph. They didn’t stop. The dog lived for about an hour after that then passed away. We were all very traumatized kids after that.

When Scott talked about Gigi, it nearly made me cry... I nearly lost my dog twice this year... emergency surgery for his stomach and then (probably caused by the 1st surgery) a part of his liver turned and cut of multiple organs. I have an elderly adopted long-haired cat. She's 15 or 16 years old. Her fur gets matted very easily as she doesn't groom herself as well as she used to so we shave her in the summer. She LOVES it and it really puts a spring in her step as she's cooler and more comfortable. By winter her fur has grown back in again so anyone with a long-haired cat who might not want to do this, your cat will actually thank you for it - with lots of purrs and head butts (bunting) 😺😊

Candice, I was driving one day and a squirrel darted out in front of my car. Until that day I could not understand why people couldn't stop for an animal, but those guys are so fast!! Luckily I didn't hit it. What i used to hate is when drivers don't stop to see if the animal is ok. My old neighbor is head of the local humane society and she told me it's common for people not to feel it when they hit a small animal. If they didn't see it dart under the car they wouldn't know to stop.

    • @Kirmeins
      @Kirmeins 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Because most of the time they will barely see/recognize it fast enough. If it happens in rush hour (as it was with Freddy) and the car in front of you is less than 10 meters away then the time span in which you can see the road directly in front of you is very short. On average it takes a human 2 seconds to react to anything. Add to that the time you'd need to actually stop the car and the fact that if you do stop suddenly in a high traffic situation you might very well cause a giant traffic accident because people behind you have no time to react and smash into your car as well... well...
I guess the drivers did notice something wrong but propably didn't have time to realize it was a small dog flying like a ping pong between cars. :(
It just goes to show that people in cars are dangerous even if they tend to forget it. If you sit in a 500 kg car and go 40 mph and you hit a 3-4 kg tiny dog you haven't even seen on the road it's likely to feel like a slight bump in the road and you won't think much of it. It might just be a piece of rubble - that happens a lot.
The person who ran on the road to safe Freddy was risking his life too. Good thing nothing else happened. And unbelievably lucky that Freddy had nothing but a cracked pelvis and the most scary bruises ever.
I swear that boy must've had cat ancestry complete with 9 lives!

Unfortunately, he didn't die right away---the police were called, and they put the deer out of his misery. My husband and I were not hurt, the airbags didn't deploy, and no glass damage. oof, poor Chip. my grandmother has an older long haired cat. she realized that she needed to brush him more often because he learned to use his teeth as a comb to pull his fur out and it got all tangled up in his teeth and ended up rotting some of them before she realized the problem. long haired cat's need help with their coats, either by brushing or teaching them to not be stressed by having an undercoat-type blowout like huskies or other double coated dogs.

    • @douglasgriffiths3534
      @douglasgriffiths3534 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I also have a longhaired cat, and I do remove the undercoat in a bath like the pro groomers do. It really cuts down on all that hair flying around, and the amount the cat ingests. Even my shorthaired cats get the same treatment when they start to blow their coats. They seem a lot happier with all that undercoat gone. (Jan Griffiths).

That's the way vets are supposed to be. Care for all animals, regardless of species. However, my cats go to a cat specialist, and dogs go to one who specializes in dogs. They are in the same practice. Husband and wife team. Wife does cats, hubby does dogs. (Jan Griffiths).

I have both a 10 year old, blind dachshund and a 1 year old Maine Coon cat, so this episode was particularly poignant. And with Maine Coon cats the hairballs are real. So far mine has only brought up one, with the usual oscar winning dramatic performance at 3am, but sure there will be more to come.

      Brian Nicholas:
I love the words you have used, how the furball came out at 2 am .
Our little girl ROO, GOD BLESS HER, she passed away 8 weeks ago at the age of 17 plus.
When she became a little more deaf, and she couldn't hear properly anymore, she walked through the flat at night and made deep sounds . Me her human MUM got up , checking whether she was alright, she kept quiet, looked at me with a big smile and tail up. So we cuddled a little and all was well.

@@karindickinson7993 I am sorry to hear your beloved Roo passed away. In time the heart will heal and I am equally sure that when the time is right, Roo will send along a new fur baby to keep you company.
My last Maine Coon, before this one, passed away from cancer that was inoperable. I was in no hurry to "replace" Fredo. My dachshund, Oskar and I continued on, until Liberty, (named because he was born on July 4th Independence Day) came into our lives. My sister takes in stray cats on her 100 acre farm, and Liberty's mum was dumped there whilst very pregnant.
Liberty, just a tiny kitten was fascinated with Oskar, and likewise Oskar was like a super nanny with Liberty. Every time Liberty left his siblings in the nesting basket, Oskar was right there to shepherd him along and nose him back into the basket with the rest of the kittens. If Liberty meowed, as kittens like to do, Oskar would come find me and bark and bring me to the kittens. Oskar could still see then. Ultimately Oskar and I left my sister's house on September the 10th with little Liberty making the journey back to our place and Oskar sitting next to the cat carrier for the entire drive home. Interestingly, about 10 days later Oskar became blind. Now its 2 years later, and the three of us share the apartment and Oskar and Liberty, who is now literally 3 feet long from the tip of his tail to the tips of his paws, each have their spots on my bed.

@@briannicholas2757 Thank you so much for your wonderful story.
When I hear people like you telling their story, stories, it's heartwarming and I could jump for joy. I am so happy , that there are still so many loving, caring people who care for neglected, dumped animals.
I never will find out, why humans are doing this , neglecting animals.
I am GERMAN born with a dual nationality. When we ( British husband) decided to move to SUFFOLK( UNITED KINGDOM) our two furry girls had to move with us.
Believe it or not what kind of ideas came up from people( not our family and friends), what to do with JACKSON and TRINE ( both girls): set them free, they will find a new home !. Put them to sleep ! Give them to a shelter !!!!
There were times, where I couldn't talk anymore. I was crying, I couldn't believe, what was said.
Patrick and I found a good quarantine station in Suffolk, a very small, good quarantine station with a cattery. At our time 6 months !
Nowadays a chip and of course a check up, vaccinations, you name it.
It still broke our heart, the day they were collected.
JACKSON and TRINE got a private pick up. All in all it was expensive, but we did the best for our best girls.
Even today when I remember their pick up, PATRICK and I can tell you exactly about the last two days and the day they were collected.
It still brings tears to my eyes. In the end we were reunited , which was wonderful.
We have already choosen a name for our cat to be the next best girl/boy.
All our cats were best ,best cats .
Patrick has choosen the name and I like it too : CATNIP.
First we like to go TOGETHER on a short break, which we haven't had for years, and then, CATNIP, we are coming !!!❤🐅❤
Again THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR STORY AND YOUR WORDS.
By the way, we are back in GERMANY. After 14 years in SUFFOLK ( a wonderful time) we moved to a small island HELGOLAND and are now back in HAMBURG.
All is well, will be well. We love to talk about our CATNIP. She/ he doesn't know, someone waits for her/him, two humans who can't live without a moggy.
      Thank you ! ❤❤❤🐅❤❤❤

Kudos to Claire for cutting Chips hair. I too had a long haired cat who was so grumpy in the summer months. She initially had an identity crisis when I shaved her . My roommates &I had to profusely praise her new appearance. Once she adjusted, she was more active, less grumpy, wanted more affection. Every time I shaved her, it was 1 miserable hour in the bathroom for both of us & then the benefits outweighed the misery. I shaved her like a lion with a mane, puffy end to her tail & puffy paws. So adorable.

I didn't feel it when I hit him, but I sure smelled it. I couldn't see him either, since skunks are mostly black, and it was dark. No streetlights on our highways either (I live in a rural area).
