I always enjoy listening to Goodall and watching his television programs. One thing I appreciate is that he does acknowledge that music Is a subjective experience for us all. At the start of each of his episodes of his story of music he says, " there are a million ways to tell the story of music-this is mine." But people (I'm thinking yt comments) still complain he's got it 'wrong'.
I find Howard Goodall's communication excellent and I've learned something from every programme I've watched. And been engaged by taking on the role of martian!
Howard Goodall is my new hero in tes if intelligent Tv, but I must correct him about John Williams: he DOES orchestrate his scores, for the most part. The orchestrators who assist him are there to ensure that the lengthy and complex scores are delivered on time.
The reason "alto" (meaning high)was chosen for that voice is due to men being the primary early singers and the alto voice is indeed high for a man. However there are (and have been) many male altos and even some male sopranos.
The young man needs to realize that with his accent he needs to talk more slowly. We miss a lot of short parts of phrases and for a person who's not a native speaker we lose the whole sentence and more. We're trying to follow his mixed up train of thoughts and the bouncing around. What's his problem? Time pressure? Why make the video if there's not enough time to begin with?
Really? He seems to be speaking at a normal pace to me and his accent is standard RP, but anyway, perhaps it might help to play the video at 0.75 speed.

What a brilliant talk. Watching this after having just gotten through his 6 hour series...for the third time now. So much to be inspired by here...
Thank you for this...and obviously Howard Goodall is a World treasure.

I would appreciate 20 Episodes. Brilliant indeed Mr Goodall

I should add that nearly all vocal names in music are referenced to the tenor voice and in instrumental music to the viola.
His program (yes I am an American) on The Beatles is just fantastic. Like all of his programs. Ha.
LOL. I agree, but a program is something one puts into a computer (Yes, I am a Brit).
alto is the highest male voice
