this is one of those films where i wonder if it were made today that people would still like it. The film is chalk full of unexplained phenomena like the house flying over the rainbow, and dorthy getting the slippers. I like this kind of movie but I don't think similar movies get the same appreciation.
The weird thing is that when I think about it, the only reason I like this movie a good bit is because I watched it as a young kid. I’m 21 now and it’s been over a decade since I saw it. If I had watched this for the first time now I would just be all right with it, because I don’t typically love old movies from the early ages. Nostalgia is powerful
The cast was perfect for each character, shirley temple wouldve been great but considering what abuse judy garland went through its probaby best shirley temple didnt get it because she was definitely younger but she also went through horrible stuff when she was in the film industry.
It's a classic I agree, actually the incident with Margaret Hamilton happened in the scene where she disappears after introducing herself, there was also an original actor for the tin man but he got allergic to the prosthetics so they replaced him.
10:13 They used a 35-foot-long muslin stocking that was wrapped up in chicken wire (so it’ll twist like a real tornado) and a crane that was rotated by a motor. This was all then fastened to a car below the stage that the crew moved along a track. The scene where everyone is outside and they’re trying get shelter when the tornado is coming towards them, that scene was made by having the actors on set with a giant green screen behind them with test footage of the tornado playing. If you look up the test footage of the tornado for when the house is in the tornado, there are points where the tornado comes extremely up close and you can slightly tell the thing was made of fabric. I honestly wish we got to see behind-the-scenes images of the tornado being made.
The one classic EVERYONE has watched at least once. And made in one of the best years in film ever along with other influential pieces of filmmaking like Gone With the Wind, Stagecoach, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, The Roaring Twenties, Only Angels Have Wings, Goodbye Mr. Chips, Of Mice and Men, Wuthering Heights, Ninotchka, The Women, The Rules of the Game etc. What an expectional year it was. The '30s really ended with a bang. If you want a decade that ended with a bang, it's that.
I didn’t realize wicked was a wizard of oz movie. When wicked part 2 comes out I’ll do a ranking of all wizard of oz movies (or at least as many as I can watch)
I absolutely love the wizard of oz. I grew up watching it. It is a really great family musical motion picture. No wonder why it is an extremely popular movie. Definitely my personal favorite flick. I would watch the wizard of oz like every day. It did super well at the box office. Such a classic. The first time I ever saw the film was on vhs. My parents owned the 50th anniversary edition video cassette at one point. It is such an amazing vhs release where it comes with a 32 page illustrated history booklet and extra features after the movie. The wizard of oz is a perfect family musical film. Everyone knows the wizard of oz. Everything works for the movie including the set design, the production design, the musical score, the makeup, the costume design, the visual aspects and the acting. The cast were perfect for the characters they played. I knew Buddy Ebsen was originally casted to play the Tin Man. But, then unfortunately he became very ill from the silver paste the make up artist gave him. Then Jack Haley was given the part. Jack Haley did a great job as the role of the Tin Man. That would’ve been interesting if Buddy Ebsen was the role. But, Jack Haley was a perfect choice. Everyone did a perfect job as the characters they portrayed. Even the cinematography was amazing. Overall, the wizard of oz is a perfect type of entertainment. My mom is even a huge fan of the film. Highly enjoyable.
I haven’t seen wizard of oz in probably 10 or 11 years. I’m gonna watch it when my parents go out of town next weekend it’s kind of embarrassing for a dude to watch wizard of oz while other people are around
Easily a classic film. If you also play Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon album while watching the movie on mute, it perfectly fits with the time frame.
It might be a classic but I think Wizard of OZ has aged like Milk and I don't like the ending where they suggested it was all a dream because that is not True in the Books. I prefer Return to OZ and that wasn't always the case.
love your review matt you make it sound like a gangster movie lol! you killed my sister lol i never got into this much because i seen the wiz more have you seen the wiz?classic take on the wizard of oz.Thats crazy about wanting to cut somewhere over the rainbow and the bts drama i never knew that thats a shame! they should make a behind the scenes movie of the making of this
Due to this movies greatness also came a lot of sacrifice and a lot of misery. Amongst the actors specifically. Especially regarding Judy Garland like what she went through is just absolutely terrible. I mean, talk about abuse of power and disregard for the safety and well-being of the actors from MGM back then. Not only that but Judy Garland was also wildly underpaid I mean the poor girl she was overworked, abused, and underpaid. The highest paid actors were Ray Bulger, who played the scarecrow and Jack Haley, who played the tin man both of them got paid $6000 each. While Judy Garland was only making $500. And she was also regarded as a fat little pig with pigtails from the producers and she also had to wear a painfully tight corset on her chest and she was forced to lose a lot of weight and she was put on a very strict bullshit diet. All she had to eat was chicken soup and all she had to drink was black coffee and they had her smoke packs of cigarettes to reduce her appetite and prescription medication drugs to keep her working long hours. And she would take sleeping pills to knock her out and she only got like three hours of sleep a day. I mean, I couldn’t imagine what all that must’ve been like. I couldn’t imagine what it must’ve been like to only have chicken soup and have black coffee. I mean, I know I would go crazy if that was me not that, but they also had people monitor Judy Garland to watch what she ate, and what she had to drink, basically to make sure that she stuck to her diet. And yeah, Jack Haley replaced Buddy absent. Because he had the aluminum powder that he ingested in his body nearly killed him. And the aluminum paint that they put on Jack Haley‘s face wasn’t any better because he ended up suffering an eye infection. Like basically the makeup and the costumes for the lion scarecrow and tin man was not fun to wear at all. And even the costume for the cowardly lion was made out of real lion skin and weighed over 100 pounds and the actor would sweat profusely in the costume and that, but they also had lots of lights on the set that were also really hot too. And every day the crew had to literally wash the cowardly lions costume. And the foul odor of the costume was unbearable. So yeah, making this film was a very miserable experience for the cast. And apparently it is true that the munchkins would sexually harass Judy Garland because she even admitted it in her memoir. And yeah Victor Fleming smack the shit out of Judy Garland because for whatever reason she couldn’t stop giggling and laughing during takes. I mean the Director could’ve handled it differently, but I guess she kept doing it so many times to the point where Victor Fleming couldn’t take it anymore so yeah, he pulled her aside and smacked her and then said now get back in and work. But other than that, the movie still a classic but it’s hard for me to watch this movie now knowing all of the bad shit that went on behind the scenes. And at the end of the day, the experiences of making this movie really ruin Judy Garland‘s life. And it’s what caused her to suffer from addiction and multiple divorces and her drug addiction is what ultimately led to her death. Because she became over reliant on prescription medication drugs and one day she overdosed on them. But yeah, it’s just sad of how much Hollywood got away with back then. And even to some degree, that stuff still happens because at the end of the day, Hollywood is a very tough business to work for always has been and always will be.
It's an old favorite.
I love Jack Nicholson's line as the Joker of "I'm melting, I'm melting" in "Batman" (1989), a homage to "The Wizard of Oz" (1939)!
A classic. As a kid I use to look forward to seeing this every year.
Me,too!
Great Movie @@julieevans3426
@julieevans3426 It's sad to know that pretty much Everyone in this Movie are all now dead I think that one of The Munchkins are still alive.

I like the movie it’s not one of my favorite movies. There’s a few movies this year I would throw way above wizard of oz

It paid off. It looks really impressive
this film is a classic
Ehh it’s good. I just watched it for the first time in like 12 years and I didn’t love it
I don't think anyone can take anything away from this film. This is a true classic.
Yeah it’s pretty good. The only thing I can take away from it is that there have been better movies over the past decade.

If Dorothy still had the ruby slippers on when she woke up back home, then she was'nt dreaming.
I used to love this movie as a kid back in the 2000s. I was Dorothy one year for Halloween back in 05 at age 8.
Same here 💯💯💯💯💯💯

A classic, no doubt.
The Wicked Witch said fly my preties fly not fly fly fly.
Also The Scarecrow never had a gun.
Mandela Effect.
For the horses they used food coloring dye which they use in gelatin.
I didn’t realize wicked was a wizard of oz movie. When wicked part 2 comes out I’ll do a ranking of all wizard of oz movies (or at least as many as I can watch)

In real life Margaret Hamilton loved Animals She gave tons of money to charities.
All time classic, I loved this movie and it is one of my kids favorite flick, ageless and such a smart and insightful.
I was freaked out by the scarecrow’s legs torn off when I was little 😂
I haven’t seen wizard of oz in probably 10 or 11 years. I’m gonna watch it when my parents go out of town next weekend it’s kind of embarrassing for a dude to watch wizard of oz while other people are around

I like wizard of oz but I can name tons of movies that topped it (for me)
