  • Come and join me as I explore a selection of new works by German master Gerhard Richter at David Zwirner in London. Richter is working with collage as well as drawing enigmatically in pencil.

He is the only artist I can relate to. There is no other artist I know of who couldn’t care less about a signature style and just creates whatever he feels like creating. We are often told to stick to a signature style and that would make our work stand out. Richter is proving that theory wrong. I cannot say there is something I don’t like about his work. It is all impeccable because it stems from his soul.

Exactly, he just does what he wants and these work seem to have a special beauty because he seems to be doing it all for his own pleasure. Thank you for watching.

@@artgalleryexplorer keep reinforcing the viewers lens, by that I mean so simple, cohesive, and lengthy, which is how Gerhard Richter comes across. He is a don't miss legend. People like me, stuck at home, thank you artvlog4778.

Thanks for posting this as I doubt I'll get to London to see the exhibition first hand. Loving those new pencil & ink works, not seen anything like those before from Richter. Richter is one of my favourite artists (even though I haven't managed to get to some of his later shows since the mid 2000s). I've seen many of his works and solo shows in the past, both in the UK & Germany. I always come out of his shows (or after seeing his work in collections or group shows) feeling all the better for seeing his work. Whether it be his political works, colour or monochrome blurred photorealist works or his abstract works. He is truly one of the greatest artists of the 20th and 21st Century.
Thanks again for posting the vid/tour of the show.

I really agree - Richter is capable of lifting the spirits and it brings me great pleasure to bring them to a fan like yourself (via David Zwirner, of course). The pencil and ink drawings are gorgeous, aren't they? Thank you for watching.

Thanks for the tour for those of us here across the pond. I thought the music perfectly matched the art. Such incredible diversity! I agree, Richter's works look like they could have come from several different artists. I studied him back in the '80s, and I confess I was not aware he was still working. Amazing.

Thank you for watching and for the comment about the music. I always get nervous when choosing music because it can ruin it if a viewer loves the artist and hates the music! Yes, incredible that he is still creating works of beauty at 92.

an artist of his stature and age must feel they can do whatever the bloody hell they want, abandoning any need to conform to expectation. it feels like he just wanted to please himself enjoying a process with the water colour drawings. they have a sense of ethereal freedom and subtlety.

    • @artgalleryexplorer

That is exactly what I felt too. The works were dated like a diary. I imagine he doesn't give a damn about making money from them or what the wider art world thinks - he is creating for personal pleasure.

The commercial before this tasteful documentary was gross. This woman was carrying on about how satisfied she is by her husbands “tool” filling her up; enough. And there was imagery of creamy paint or something being squeezed onto… a dish? Back to the drawing board in that advertisement.
