Great reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL. You also got points for dancing, haha...
"Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried worried about their weight. But, yeah those instrumentals are very, very metal and the juxtaposition with the cute vocals, lyrics and choreo was totally the point of the song and the reason why this music video went viral back in 2014. Helping them a lot tbh.
It's their most "popular" song but probably not their best one. But that doesn't stop it from being a blast when they play it live (and they play it a lot!).
This music video has the studio version of the audio over the visuals from the concert Legend 1997 held to celebrate Su-metal's (the lead singer) 16th birthday. It was the song's live premiere.
You have already a ton of great info about them but I wanted to remark that they are way better live and also that they are very diverse musically since they like to blend any music genre with metal. So, always expect the unexpected. 😁
I second the suggestion for "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014): th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html
    Enjoy your BABYMETAL journey!

Awesome guys, welcome to Babymetal! Yuimetal and Moametal were 14 here, and this show was Legend 1997, in Dec 2014. Lead Su-metal’s 16th birthday concert.
You’ll see their full live band, the Kami Band in pretty much all other videos!
Babymetal is easily one of THE best live bands around, and they just announced a massive EU Arena tour for 2025. O2 Brixton Academy sold out instantly lol.
    DEFINITELY do more Babymetal:
*Road of Resistance (Official Live):* Epic battle anthem. Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforced had a hand in the guitar lines.
*Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Official Live):* Babymetal’s 1st major appearance in the west at Sonisphere UK 2014. Took the 50K confused UK metalheads by storm. 😂

Great first reaction and good to see you dancing along from the off. Welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 OK, I can see the Lena Lovitch/Toni Basel cross comparison, that's not unreasonable, but that maybe applies only to this song. You may get more Prodigy vibes from their song 'Awadama Fever', but don't expect it in other songs.
In reality you won't have seen or heard anything quite like them, they pioneered their own metal sub-genre and they are both original and unique.
They are a Japanese band formed in 2010, there were 3 original members (they were only 12 and 11 years old at that time) and we have watched them grow up and become one of the very best live acts on the planet.
This performance was filmed at their Legend 1997 concert in December 2013 celebrating lead vocalist Su-metal's 16th birthday (they have dubbed the studio audio over the live performance - shame as they are so much better live). The other two girls were both 14 - so yes they sounded like children because they pretty much were.
BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and Momometal (in charge of backing vocals, harmonies and mainly hyping and involving the crowd with their choreo).
The original third member Yuimetal last performed in October 2017 and was absent for 12 months for undisclosed health reasons until she announced she was still not fully recovered and would be leaving the band.
Su and Moa continued as a duo for 4-5 years supported by 3 dancers who would take turns in the third spot. From about March 2020 only one of those dancers remained and finally that dancer - now known as Momometal - was revealed as the new official third member (and finally got a microphone) on 1st April 2023.
They are supported in all live shows by the Kami Band (long story, I'll try to keep it short - there are effectively two Kami Bands - East and West). East Kamis are the best Japanese session musicians you could hope to find and supported BABYMETAL since 2012 (they were phased in gradually over about 18 months playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support from March 2014) until their last appearance (to date) in January 2023.
West Kamis are American musicians who first appeared in 2019 to play initially in the lengthier foreign tours and they have been ever present since April 2023.
You did not see the Kami Band in this - Legend 1997 was the last show where they played only the encores (they came on for the last 5 songs). The guys in skeleton suits known as Babybones were a fake band miming the instruments which were pre-recorded - the vocals would have been live.
BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics to create their very own sub-genre (Kawaii Metal - kawaii meaning cute or adorable) ... and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings.
They don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world. They are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music).
BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
This was the video that went viral early in 2014 and got them a lot of attention before they started touring the world.
They have gone on to become Japan's biggest musical export and one of the very best live performance acts on the planet.
That energy - they never let up on that for every song in every concert, they never give less than 100% as they know people have paid a lot of money and travelled a long way (often from different countries) to see them and they appreciate their fans.
'Gimme Chocolate' is one of their fun songs. They just want chocolate but are a bit worried about their weight - but chocolate! It would be so nice, they would be so happy, they worked hard. Can they just have a piece of chocolate please?🍫🍫🍫
They do have deeper songs - try 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (Bullying, No More, Forever) live at Sonisphere 2014 - their first time in the UK, their first major event and metal festival outside of Japan. Aged 16 and 15 and with over 50,000 UK metalheads who don't understand any Japanese to impress. IDZ was the last song of the 5 they played that day - you will hear what the crowd thought at the end.

Welcome to what is easily one of the best live groups around for the last 14 years now! They're a little older now - and this isn't exactly typical of them - but still a great fun track. Great first reaction. Bear in mind that this was a music video put out eleven years ago and had the studio recording dubbed over a live performance. This was also the last concert where 'Babybones' who mimed playing instruments to a backing track were used. Later in this same show The Kami Band, some of Japan's finest musicians, joined them on stage and they have had a live band backing them since then made up of both Japanese and, latterly, American musicians. Yui and Moa were just 14 when this was filmed. Su, the lead singer, was 16 the day before. Yui left in 2018 after being absent for a year with health issues. They performed as a duo since 2019 with a third girl making up the dance triangle but not singing. The last remaining 'third girl', Momoko, became an official member of the group in April 2023, was given a headset microphone and is now Momometal. She earned her place and is now an invaluable member.
Now in their twenties they are bigger than ever and tour the planet regularly. They have just finished touring countries in South America and are now in North America. They also have an arena tour arranged for next May across Europe culminating in a concert at London's O2 Arena on May the 30th. I have my ticket.

There were a few more Babybones appearances after this in 2013 and 2014, such as 'LIVE IN SINGAPORE' (their first solo show overseas), some TV appearances, and their "Two Man Show" with ChthoniC in Taiwan.
The Kami Band were introduced back in October 2012 at 'Legend I' with a two song encore of 'Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!' and 'Ijime Dame Zettai'.
Folks are often surprised how long the Babybones and Kami Band overlapped.

Great first reaction, and welcome to the Foxhole! 😄 You haven´t seen anything yet, the Foxhole is full of pleasant and sometimes very heavy surprises. I´m sure, one of our lore masters, Grington300, will find your reaction video very soon and will give you a very brief overview of what and who BABYMETAL are. These ladies are going hard for 14 years now, and they still do. They toured South America for the first time during the last few weeks (the fancam videos from there are absolutely amazing!), now they´re touring North America, and next year they tour Europe with a huge arena tour.
    You could try
    - Headbanger Live Legend 1997 Apocalypse 4k(Video Remastered+HQ Audio)
next. It is from the same concert "Gimme Chocolate!!" footage was taken from. With GC you got studio audio put over the live performance. With HB you´ll get a full live performance, including BABYMETAL´s super famous "Kami Band". A bunch of session musicians, and some of the best musicians you´ll find on the planet. In this case they are all from Japan, and they appeared in 2023 for the last time. Since then the Kami Band (West) toured with the ladies. These musicians are all coming from the US, and again they are session musicians and some of the best you´ll find anywhere.

The BABYMETAL members are very aware that "WTF?" is a common first reaction.
BABYMETAL is a concept that seems like it shouldn't work, and if they didn't execute at the highest level, it probably wouldn't.
'Gimme Chocolate!!' is their most popular music video, with almost 200 million views on TH-cam.
They have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce.
Not all at the same time though. : )
This was the world debut for the song, although the music video uses the studio audio.
Su-metal had just turned sixteen the day before this show, the Legend "1997" Su-metal Seitansai (holy birthday).
1997 was Su's birth year. Yui and Moa were born in 1999 and were both fourteen.
There are a lot of great choices for a more recent song.
I'd recommend 'Monochrome' at the PIA Arena.

first time hearing The Prodigy mention in a babymetal reaction haha😀interestingly(?) skeleton costume guys are just fake bands lol, they have real musicians on stage later, iirc it happened in last few songs in this very concert, their first performance with real band. At the dawn of their career, they leaned towards to the Japanese Idol side more, with heavy/pop-ish music, of course they evolve and become more mature musically later. I would suggest a song also from their early career, BABYMETAL - Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL), I consider this as one of their important milestones, cheers.

Mostly correct, with this concert the Kami Band came in for the 5 song encore. But it wasn´t the first time for them, the Kami Band played the encore at the "Legend I" concert in October 2012 live for the first time.
"Ijime, Dame, Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014" is a wonderful recommendation, I second that! 😄

Well it was probably their biggest Audience at that time. The Audience waited at the Main stage for the main Acts and suddenly three very young japanese girls appeared, but at least they came together with a Band. Very few People wgat would happen there. But at the End of their Performance ( Ijime Dame, Zettai was their closer at that time) the Audience demanded "We want more". In fact this was their Demonstration, that their Concept, that was designed for the specific Problems of the japanese market, could work WorldWide.the next Problem. No one had expected suchva Success, so all Dealers Ran out of Merchandise for Babymetal. They sold more than for groups like Mettallica. And in fact they had to thank Metallica for a lot. They had found them in Japan and considered them extremly interesting and they wrote a Rave for Metalhammer.

I'm going to additionally suggest (as others have) "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" (Live at Sonisphere 2014): th-cam.com/video/Ro-_cbfdrYE/w-d-xo.html
^^They were bumped from a 1k-ish side stage to 55k-ish main stage, for a UK metal audience waiting on Anthrax, Iron Maiden, Metallica; and virtually nobody knows who they are. They crushed it, this is the final song of their set, and one of only three times I have ever seen the lead singer "break character" she is so happy at the end waving to the crowd. Just phenomenal stuff.

Many members of The One will say that this song isn't among BABYMETAL's best - I beg to differ. Although BABYMETAL does have many songs that are better, this song defines what BABYMETAL is: heavy metal pleasantly mixed with J-pop without missing a beat - kawaii metal at its best, and one of the best videos of the "Yui Era" (more on that later). At the time that this video (concert) was performed, Su-metal had just turned sixteen the day before, and both Yuimetal and Moametal had turned fourteen about six months earlier.
The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . .
You’ve opened a can of worms!
BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums with over fifty songs, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art.
I try to urge people new to BABYMETAL to start from BABYMETAL's beginning and see how they have progressed to now - see where they’ve been before getting caught up in where they are - and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" ( th-cam.com/video/cirhQ8iLdbw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=k84SUx4P01t9M5ic ) and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay") ( th-cam.com/video/qVdBBOpSoN4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=rNZ3yF8RGVdzBZmS ), both released in 2012. I'm sure you will find both very entertaining, and it is my opinion that, until you’ve seen their earlier work, you haven't really experienced BABYMETAL.
You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of recommended songs (with links to suggested versions). The first sixteen are from what I've come to call "The Golden Age of BABYMETAL" (better known as "The Yui Era"). This list also includes all four songs of the BABYMETAL sub-group Black BABYMETAL (just Yui and Moa while Su is taking a break):

You can use my TH-cam playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty” ( th-cam.com/play/PLdhz2aj0pt4zPl0BZLevPUR9uHKQA27uj.html ) as a quick link to all of these videos; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list. Anyway . . . .
Another recommendation (read "challenge"): react to an entire BABYMETAL concert. I suggest:
    "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" th-cam.com/play/PLdBAj9hZ91wCao72oSqTMLrGpIDOqzR2Q.html
    and/or
    "Budokan Black Night" (2014) th-cam.com/play/PLdBAj9hZ91wBwsBfjsKH9zWxA5YOOUkSI.html
Both concerts are, in a word, incredible.
Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)
Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!! (Sorry about the wall!)
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

Probably better to suggest something from 'The Other One' as a starter, then work backwards. GC is too crazy for most people.

Here in France, we have a not-so-great industrial cheese called 'Babybel,' which has inspired a saying : 'Babymetal is to metal what Babybel is to cheese.' Nonetheless, I personally enjoyed this girl babyband (average age of 13.5 years) when I discovered it back then, as I was interested in child prodigies like Connie Talbot, Angelina Jordan, Celine Tam, Esang de Torres, Angelica Hale, etc. So, I judged Babymetal to be excellent. Becoming a fan, however, wasn’t in the cards… though Su is indeed an outstanding singer.
Now, considering your age (and mine), I’d rather suggest Ningen Isu’s 'Heartless Scat,' a Japanese metal band of retired gentlemen whose social critiques and philosophical reflections go slightly beyond a mere quest for chocolate. In my opinion, they’re at least as crazy and entertaining as Babymetal. Naturally, given their age, they have a bit less future ahead of them.

'Babymetal is to metal what Babybel is to cheese.' What are you talking about lol.
What is a 'girl babyband'?. They have been going for 14 years, Su will soon be 27 years old soon. Album No 5 out next year. You talk as if Gimmie chocolate is the only song they did.

@@Ryujin170 Even though I’m used to the closed-mindedness and lack of humor among fans in general, I really regret that nine times out of ten, I have to respond to a comment because the commenter didn’t read my own comment. So, I’ll repeat what I said: it’s not me making the comparison between Babymetal and Babybel-that’s just something that’s been said here and there in France. Personally (I repeat again), I enjoyed Babymetal back in the 'Gimme Chocolate' days. And I was clearly only referring to that period. As for your question: 'What is a girl babyband?' Maybe I’m not mastering English well, and it gives a different impression than what I intended. What I meant was simply a wordplay: Babymetal, babyband, or baby-girl band-a wordplay without any pejorative intent.

@@continentzero7572Closed minded? I did read your comment. Am i supposed to know exactly what you meant. I just asked you why you brought cheese in the conversation 'something that’s been said here and there in France' what?🧀😆I still don't get the comparison. You talked to Eddian as if GC was the only thing they had done and encouraged them to move on.

@@Ryujin170 Of course, you’re not expected to know exactly what I mean, but it would be appreciated if your range of understanding could allow for something beyond a literal interpretation and be open to the possibility of a humorous view of the world. However, I see that’s too much to ask, and I’m giving up.
