      He purposefully gets it wrong or "slightly wrong" very often because it makes it more believable. If he gets it 100% right 100% of the time you know it's a trick, but if he gets it slightly wrong it makes it seem more like he's doing something difficult and magical and NOT a trick (he has explicitly said in one of his books that this is a good principle of magic and mentalism)

      I don’t know. Darren Brown but I do know the editor who worked on Trick of the mind. ( this show) Dan Mac Donald .he said when they have tricks that don’t work? They choose which ones to show. @@stewartgallagher5804 Some of Derren Browns tricks are such that they don't have a 100% chance of success. This was one of those such tricks.
      Derren regularly gets some of his predictions wrong, but it just serves to make it more impressive when he gets it right. As if he got his predictions correct 100% of the time then you'd know it's just a "trick" and if he always got it right there would be no suspense when it comes to the revelation.

    For the first trick, my guess is that Derren 1) stands on a higher ground compared to the other people, and stares down on down, which instills a sense of superiority which could make the other person uncomfortable 2) he puts an arm on the person's shoulders when he invites them to participate, which also gives a sense of superiority at the start 3) this is his television show, with lots of potential viewers, while the volunteers are guests and may be intimidated, again superiority for Derren. These three things are what I picked up, which could instill a sense of superiority, and want to make the other person look away since Derren positions himself as the "alpha".

    He also touched his arm when he told him to amplify the feeling, and then proceeded to touch his arm when saying the bike related words to further connect the words associated with bike, with that amplified feeling. Also Derren talking fast wasn't without a purpose either, as it most likely resulted in a slightly unfocused state which just helped derren plant his BMX seed even deeper.

      Absolutely, and it's an incredibly powerful and effective tool. Derren's greatest triumph in his career is probably maintaining that psychological aura he has with the general public.

    • @feenix1033
      @feenix1033 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shadow4798 Couldn't agree more that is his triumph. Every time with a friend I try to break down how a trick is done, they go straight to "Well obviously Derren influenced them to think of...", and i'm like, wow he really has them convinced he can do that. I've even found they'll hold onto that belief even after i've implicitly explained an effect. For example, "An Evening of Wonders" grand effect simply uses a Master Prediction Device.
      You can explain all kinds of effects to people and they still maintain this almost religious-like belief that Derren can manipulate minds to an extent that would be supernatural, a thing he endlessly tells people not to believe in.
      His TV specials are some of the best, people simply wont believe the explanation "they're just going along with it", they're convinced Derren "programs" them.

      @@cliveedwards2958 Ah yes that trick is all about selling to the audience that the trick is NLP. It isn't, NLP is pseudoscience. However it's an excellent way to distract from the real effect.
      That said, these are still amongst some of Derren's greatest effects. I've watched many of his live shows and when it came to "Miracle", me and my pal couldn't even muster a standing auvation at the end, seemingly the only two people in the crowd to remain seating. It was obvious how most of the affects were achieved, or they were simply variations on very common effects we see nowadays.
      Derren sometimes hasn't done himself any favours (although it's often when pushed by a network to get a special out). He admits himself the predicting the lottery was not his finest work and he's not proud of it. I'd also say "Miracle at 40,000 feet", where the subject supposedly lands a plane, is utterly and completely ridiculous. He knows and chooses to go along with the stunt.

      @@feenix1033 interesting...I remember his 'horse racing prediictions' special..which I'd worked out back in 1970s how to do..they used to advertise these predictors in the exchange and mart back then..you have, I take it , been to his shows?..is there a serious amount of editing going on before broadcast? As you rightly say, he has wrapped this up ad mentalism or such..but on a basic illusionist level how good was he at the shows?

    Lool, I chose 32 as well. If you notice he says hold out your TWO fingers. He says two a few times. I chose 3 purely because he has three fingers over the card and went with 32. Pretty lucky because I could have went with 23.

    9:13 there's a lot of camera cuts as he takes something out of his pocket and perhaps puts THAT in the envelope? not sure why it would be significant though as he'd need to know anyway.

      OMG, me, too. What did he say to make us think 23?
      I know it was something...I'm going to go back and watch it, again. The very first number I briefly had settled on for like a half of a second was 52. Think how similar that looks to 32, depending on a person's handwriting. I know it's all just suggestion and manipulation, but I genuinely didn't catch how he manipulated both of us to get to that number.

    the adults were pick pocketed

    • @matty101yttam
      @matty101yttam 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah he's got a good pickpocket under him, they pick peoples pockets and they tell him what they have, same goes for simon pegg, the box is actually hiding a person, it's not actually for the present, then when his back is to it the guy gets out and swaps his like around with a forged one. He keeps touching him while his sitting so if the pickpocket has trouble getting the wallet he won't be so sensitive to weird touches.

    • @TheDibule
      @TheDibule 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      matty101yttam The pickpocketing can’t be done ‘live’ because you still need to get the wanted present from somewhere (here, the bike). You also have to write the little essay/speech with plenty of hidden references to words like ‘bike’ or ‘BMX’. So it has to be done way before that, off camera (e.g. by the chauffeur they could send to drive SP to the TV set, or anywhere else really...)
