I must say, the Chicago street race was my first NASCAR experience. Being Australian, I watched to see how SVG would do. I have followed SVG as a driver for well over a decade now. He has driven the wheels off so many different types of cars and is pretty good on a dirt bike as well. The man can steer and is a true racer.
I dare say, NASCAR gained a whole lot of Australian and New Zealand viewers after this weekend, myself being one of them. My 16 year old son just became a NASCAR fan as well, so the sport should potentially have future generations of fans, from many different countries. The exposure NASCAR just received here in Australia is HUGE. Even people who don't support SVG and follow other drivers have paid him compliments on his driving yesterday.
I am looking forward to learning more about NASCAR, how it all works, who the different teams and drivers are, how the oval races work..... I have a feeling I will be watching a whole lot more of it from now on. Cheers Kenny, I enjoyed your breakdown of the race!

Luckily I found the in car camera for SVG, he was Mr smooth, and killing it on braking and corner exit acceleration. Talk about a wheel man SVG never missed a mark, then made incredible passing moves on sections of the track no one else thought of. In no way was he a rookie, an oval might be a different story but left and right he was amazing, he could put that car anywhere he wanted wet or dry.

--for much of the race, it was just one groove ... you venture outside the groove, you wreck ... to me it was a good race because of the skills of this one driver, SVG ... during much of the race he was learning and adapting ... many nascar drivers gave him little room, almost ran him over, he was the newcomer, heck he drives on the left and has a right seat steering wheel in NZ, and shift with their left hand ... he got shuffled to the back ... but he adapted, perservered, and ran a smart race, and he worked his way forward when the track started drying out, had good pit strategy, he was on newer rubber at the end of the race ... well done Shane Van G, you ran a heck of a race and really saved Nascar that day. you kept yr car clean all day, and you just out drove everyone with yr superior skills.

Australian here.... firstly, it's just Supercars, the name of our series.
Secondly, every fan in Australia and New Zealand knew, when SVG came out of the pit in 18th towards the end of the race, KNEW what was about to happen. That was SIGNATURE SVG.
I'm guessing that more NASCAR fans are going to have a late night in October to watch the Supercars take on Mount Panorama, Bathurst. It's our Daytona 500 and it's not only worth watching, it's worth the pilgrimage.
As far as the heel & toe, our Supercars require a clutch input on the downshift, so it's a habit.

    • @petermiddo
      @petermiddo ปีที่แล้ว +9

Can I say that, while we're separate countries, Australia and New Zealand are very close geopolitical, ideologically, and socially. Australians look on New Zealand and New Zealanders as their much loved but annoying younger brother/cousin, you know, the one who's a few years younger and always hanging around. (NZers - kiwi's -, of course, have a different view. It's OK for them to be wrong, though.)
With our immigration policies, Australians and Kiwis have free travel and lax residency requirements, with very little restrictions on working and holidaying between the two nations.
A LOT of Supercar (and legacy series) drivers hail from NZ and compete in the highest levels of our motorsport. Not just supercars, but our domestic rally series, and drag racing, as well.

    • @xDRAGONSTARx
      @xDRAGONSTARx ปีที่แล้ว +6

Can confirm this. As an Australian, we are used to seeing SVG coming from behind to take out the win. My fave battle is the SVG v Waters race at Pukekohe, but his Sandown effort, qualifying 18th and winning with a broken collar bone and 3 broken ribs... well what an epic win! I have always said I don't think SVG likes getting pole position, I think he enjoys the challenge of chasing them down then leading the last few laps!!

@brucemcpherson1651 see, I wouldn't consider a discovery of landmass to be the defining moment, and we can split the other methods in 2 distinct lines, traditional ownership and European Settlement.
By considering traditional owners, my preference, we look at 65,000 years of the Australian Aboriginal people, the oldest continuous culture in the world. Even as the decendant of Europeans, I consider this to be the Metric, but if you wanted to go by European Settlement, Australia 1788, NZ 18-something-or-other..... Then we can talk Geographic size, if you'd like. Or population. 🤣
(And, for the rest of the world, this friendly banter is how Australians and New Zealanders go on. I'll tell you what, though, pick on one or the other, and it's on for both of us)

The second most exciting part was watching someone in his very first Nascar race show the regular drivers how a real race car driver drives does it. Am based in Queensland Australia & have spent many weekends at race meetings including Bathurst. I assure you... It really wasn't fair on your local NASCAR crews & drivers to do what they did. Our local Australian touring car scene has always revolved around tricky & treacherous circuits including road courses where braking & cornering are paramount. We also have a habit of climbing & descending hills like at Lakeside Raceway north of Brisbane QLD & damn steep Bathurst New South Wales. I see our V8 SuperCars category has gained popularity all over the world in recent years & I see NASCAR is adopting similar type race cars & similar type tracks to ours. I don't want to upset you guys over there, but all the time you've been going around in circles on banked ovals with hardly any brakes, next to no cornering capacity & on fairly smooth surfaces with caveman crud like steel wheels, we've been developing really capable cars that can stop in a big hurry, get around a sharp corner & put the power down out of corners. It's been this way over here since the 1960s. Our Australian Touring Car Championships have primarily catered for fairly well modified family hack road cars that stop, go & turn corners, whereas NASCAR has traditionally focussed on sustained high speed without all the nasty twisty stop start stuff.
Our best drivers including Shane have had years & years of practice in really tough & brutal gladiator style ferocious & frantic cut & thrust racing. It wasn't really fair on your NASCAR people to alter your cars, make them like ours, recreate a street circuit like ours & drop your guys in it with our very best & most accomplished champion. Shane was always likely to put on a good show in an environment set up almost exactly similar to what he is used to & in a car similar to what he's used to, where all the other competitors were tipped into a new & fairly hostile environment. It could take several years for NASCAR people to adapt to severe V8 SuperCars conditions.
It was a treat for us Aussies & Kiwis to see SVG slice his way to the front & take the chequered flag in Chicago. Shane made it look fairly easy... It isn't! He's very highly skilled at what he does & it was always on the cards that he'd deliver on the day. The biggest headache your guys face now is a whole swarm of crazy fast Aussie & Kiwi champions heading over there now that they've seen what Shane achieved! If that happens, it'll turn your local motor racing on it's head. Our Aussie motor racing is daunting & challenging & whoever came up with the idea of letting Shane loose in the USA in a new to you guys format, obviously knew what would likely happen.
Chicago was a thrilling event. Can't wait to see more similar events in future.

I think it's bit alarming. NASCAR has just evolved into something we know all about. Imagine how far ahead Shane will get after he settles into these new NASCARs & after he's familiarised with the competitors. The minute he starts qualifying up the front & gets an early lead, these poor fellas won't see which way he went! We know what he's capable of & if he can win first time out, later race starts will be total carnage as everyone tries to kill each other trying to keep up.
NASCAR is a really big deal. It aint good to romp in & hammer the hell outa these guys & SVG has the skill set to do exactly that. They're likely to get a tad pissed off about it & pull out the usual erm... team tactics which send cars into walls in a big hurry. If NASCAR is going down this V8 SuperCars replica path, they need to import more than one accomplished Aussie/Kiwi champion & they have to retrain their crews & drivers immediately. We have at least 10 other red hot steerers here who could have pulled off what SVG just pulled off. This is massively unfair on EVERYONE involved in NASCAR & people/fans could easily get the wrong idea. It aint good to make talented locals look slow because you altered the entire scenario & inserted a top shelf professional from another country.
I love SVG to bits. He just does what he does & he does it to absolute perfection & drives away from Aussie wannabes like it's all in a day's work & he does it cheerfully. He's only just got started over there in this new format & if that continues, it'll make headlines that indicate the usual suspects are hopeless. Too much of that will no doubt cause some aggro.

I'll admit that I was a nay sayer early on about a Cup street race. I had just watched the Nashville Indy car race and was thinking that a street course would be far to narrow and every corner would be a bottleneck fiasco just like the corners at Nashville were. 1 car get sideways and stall in a corner and the whole race came to a stop. And that over and over again got tired real quick.
But as the Chicago race came closer to happening and I saw the track layout which for the most part plenty wide for passing, I was getting more excited for it. And the track and race did not disappoint. It was exciting from start to finish.
I hope that Cup gets to race there again next year. I was more than okay with SVG winning, even though until yesterday I had never heard of him. Great for him. Great for his old fans and now his new fans. He drove a great race.

And not a lot of NASCAR shirts & caps, so that meant *new race fans* .
My absolute favorite moment was when Kyle Busch pulled a Leroy Jenkins yeet move, and buried his car in the tire pack. He was Hell bent to find some grip, and just went for it. I thought it was cool AF!

As you pointed out the Next Gen car is modeled on the V8 Super car and with Nascar wanting to take their show worldwide l wonder if a Nascar / V8 Super Car series would be something to come in the future.

Great video; this was the first Nascar race i’ve watched live in over 10 years. I couldn’t stand the assumptions of murders and shootings etc in chicago from good ol’ boys who haven’t left a a 5 mile radius in their life time. I absolutely love Chicago, I love motorsports and SVG. V8 Supercars are what Nascar used to be for me, so when I heard he was racing on a street course I knew he’d teach the current line up a thing or two. On an oval I guarantee it would’ve been a different outcome but i’m proud of Nascar for figuring out all of the variables and getting this done. Racers love motorsports, I love drag racing, F1, dirt, road, drifting etc. The more we can have them co exist the better the driving will get and the more venues we can have again for racing. Just love racing y’all, we can achieve so much more by working together instead of saying the chicago race will never work because of crime.

Not to mention he said it himself he ''left a lot on the table'' as he wasn't fully comfortable with the brake pedal set up as well as other aspects of the car he couldn't have as he would have wanted.

I think stuff like project 91 is really important for the push NASCAR is making lately as an organization. Lots of eyes on the boys, different eyes, but still important. I think on each road course nascar should help these teams to bring big names in and get them in a car. I’m talking current supercar, Indy, f1 even if they can manage it. Any new fans this sport can get the better off it’ll be IMO. NASCAR is changing, but it probably needs to in order to survive. Those new eyes will see the talent of our guys. That’s the most important thing.

Hey Kenny, I'm a similar vintage to you (old) mate... been watching v8's in Australia since "group C" then "group A" and all the way through from the inception of "Australian V8 Supercars". I started out a Peter Brock fan, then when we lost him to tragedy, I started to follow his "apprentices" like Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and a stream of other "Holden Racing team" drivers. Ambrose was the only Tasmanian I can remember joining our ranks, but we have had more than a handful of great drivers come over from New Zillund (bit of Kiwi accent lol) and they have really kept our locals on their toes throughout the years. Jim Richards was the 1st of the Kiwis I remember, he was a master and became well known for telling the crowd from the podium at Bathurst that BOOed him for winning in a Nissan, that they were
"A PACK of ARSEHOLES"... that livened up the party fer a while but that was the beginning of Group A, turbos, and cars other-than-Australian in an International class. "Richo" won the respect of Aussies for speaking up for himself, and won the hearts of many more for being a clean, fair, hard charging and FAST KIWI, who also brought his son Steven into the fold here as a teenager.
SVG didn't start out in the top dollar teams over here, but he came very close to winning what I think was his 1st Bathurst venture in a second tear team. It was a stall leaving his last pit stop then finding out his battery had also died that broke his heart and chances that day.
His talent and behavior earned him better opportunities and he ended up in Roland Dane's crew which had taken over from the factory Holden team. Roland obviously thought he was OK as Shane is in relationship with Roland's daughter nowadays- who is now the "888" team principle.
Gis' may be from across the pond, but he is widely loved in Australia due to his performances AND his personality, even though media did not like his avoidance of them early days.
He is GOLD guys, treat him well, you won't regret it.😉

Nice roundup Kenny, havent watched Nascar much since Ambose left your series, love your new gen cars, they seem more robust than our supercars new gen, SVG has a knack even over here of coming thru the field, tends to back those behind up after pitting and brings his tyres up to temp slower so they last longer. Once up to temp he chases his way thru the field easier with fresher rubber. Big change from his early days of burning his rubber up. Love your items

Kenny you proved you belong in the the leaders grouo. When you said this was going to be a good race I thought you had lost your marbles. I hoped I was wrong but feared I wasn't, I expected maybe 5 cars to be running at the end of the race with all looking like a modified, hood, front fenders all missing. About 5 laps into the race I said to myself this might actually work out. Yes there were some instances where they missed the corner and hit tire but far far less than I expect. I am pleased to say I was wrong 100% Hats off to NASCAR and Chicago on a job well done.
