I never cared much for young MTT, but he really came into his own in SFO and blossomed into a musical giant giving the world tons of great recordings and lectures.
    Thank you MTT 👍

In 1971, I met Gareth Morris, principal flute of the Philharmonia orchestra, and asked him which conductors the Orchestra most revered and enjoyed working with: he answered at once, Rudolf Kempe and MTT.

I loved Michael's "Keeping Score" documentary about Copland. This set looks great!

Agreed. His entire Keeping Score series is great, but the Copland is one of the highlights, alongside the Stravinsky Rite.

A fine tribute to Michael Tilson Thomas...Years ago I met him in NY of all places in a synagogue near the village....sad to hear about his illness. I read his speech at the Julliard Commencement ...very moving about his live in music.

Through Copland the Modernist I discovered the Orchestral Variations - an orchestration Copland made in 1957 of his early Piano Variations. A revelation. Fascinating to compare the two works; Copland's orchestration is just amazing.

Virtually ALL of the Michael Tilson Thomas SFO documentaries have been kept up on TH-cam since 2020, and they’re ambitious, detailed, and worth watching. Just enter ‘Keeping Score / Michael Tilson Thomas’ in the TH-cam search. There are at least nine or ten of them, all an hour or more.

Have MTT conducting Dvorak's: The American Flag, Opus 102 on SONY (Columbia when the LP was released) Glad Mike decided to record this and Columbia agreed because there aren't many recordings of this work. The AMERICAN SUITE, Opus 98b was the flip side of the LP. Sony released both works on two different CDs. Hope they're still available. THANKS DAVE !!!!

To add to the list of Box Sets We Need and MTT Box Sets We Need, surely DG could re-release the superb recordings he made for them in a nice box? The single disc versions are OOP (the Ives/Ruggles/Piston, Debussy and Stravinsky CDs, among others). 🙏

I had hoped that RCA-BMG would’ve recorded the Copland 3rd symphony with MTT to go along with these two discs, so I’m happy to hear that the SFS finally recorded it on their own label a few years ago. Too bad it’s digital only. There are also a handful of subscriber/donor discs issued by the orchestra dating to the mid-90s, including wonderful Mahler 1 and 5. I find them less mannered than the later releases they issued commercially.

I believe Arleen Auger had that type of brain cancer as well. She was such an amazing person and artist.
