George Clinton on a Life Dedicated to Funk | Red Bull Music Academy

  • Funk legend George Clinton sat down on the lecture couch as part of the 2015 Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York for a rare, intimate chat about his momentous life and career, and touched on everything from Maggot Brain to sampling. #RBMA #funk
    TOPICS:
    3:22 - Kendrick Lamar
    18:40 - Detroit
    26:42 - Maggot Brain
    33:12 - Junie Morrison
    46:55 - Smokey Robinson
    58:13 - Sampling
Music as we know it would look a lot different (and less colorful) without the contributions of George Clinton. From his early musical beginnings in doo-wop and as a songwriter at Motown, the hugely prolific Clinton went on to form the bands Parliament and Funkadelic, two of the most important groups of the 1970s. With Clinton at the helm of their Mothership, they uprooted funk from its earthly origins, sending it into outer space. Having made P-Funk a household name, Clinton went on to build an impressive solo discography, all the while inspiring a legion of West Coast rap artists and holding the reins of a sensational band called the P-Funk All Stars.
The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.

Actually, the nuances are important. It’s “Funk is anything it needs to be to be to save your life at the time. In other words, do the best you can and then FUNK it!
Once you’ve done the best you can in any situation ain’t nothing you can do, say funk it.
So you need to be able to say funk it without guilt, without anything.
“I’ve done the best I can. Now, let’s get down.”
_Sorry to be so picky, but the poetry of it says so much more.

George is just wonderful. I love how modest he is, he never braggs on the fact that he completely took black music and gave it a real new direction. it was in a ditch just repeating itself and copying Motown. Also there was a "black"sound, and a "White" sound, and woe betide anybody who tried to get out of the groove expected of them! George said "fuck it", i'll take it where I want. LEGEND!!!

    Holla at Greg C:
The guy you referred as giving a boring interview is actually conducting an excellence interview. He asked very good questions and he allow George to tell his story from George's point of view. I guess we are so use to interviewers wanting to entertain rather than conduct a real interview. We get yellow journalism, gossip, tabloid. We can't handle this kind of interview.
This host is well research . . . as result we get superb interview. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this youtube clip. I like to see and hear more of this kind of interview.
Big up to Red Bull Music Academy!

He ain't boring, the interview is great. I personally think he could've gotten a little deeper on how was Detroit in late 1960's/ early 1970's, but that would be a detour from the actual point of the lecture. Other than that, great.
