I’m actually kinda happy I was spoiled in advance that this boss changes depending on your battle mode robot, as I deliberately went out of my way to make Metal Sonic. Felt as though it was an actual Metal Sonic fight, despite his appearance being entirely optional
So I didn’t know about this bossfight during my play through but I deliberately went out of my way to make metal knuckles, so imagine my surprise when the boss is that. Was a whole freak out moment for me.

It's so weird seeing this Mecha Sonic being so mobile. We like this fight, but we wish that if you made certain robots, the fight music would change. Like the theme would match the robot.
This is just like the time in Deltarune where you fight the Thrash Machine. This level also takes place in a location very similar to Cyber City from that game, so it fits even more.
@@TASTEGROUNDtechnically it isn’t a metal sonic fight, rather your fighting the robot you design for battle mode, so if you chose for your mech to be metal sonic in appearance or whatever design you came up with, that’s what you’re fighting.
Oh you know what would be so cool? A Post-Frontiers Tails game with both the Tails Doll and Metal Tails as bosses. Tails Doll, reflecting how seriously Eggman took Tails in the old days, would represent a personal challenge, that being not at all, just as Tails followed Sonic around, the Tails Doll shlurps behind everyone else. All we've seen it do is float, so for a boss fight I'd take that to an extreme and it a telekinesis platforming boss, like a 3D Badaline(or Frontiers Ghost but with spontaneously appearing platforms and no ring drain). Metal Tails, as a sign of Eggman's new respect for him, would be a later boss.
Tails Doll and Metal Tails fall more into the "classic" subseries. While it would make sense to have Tails fight evil counterparts of himself, I'm pretty sure there's a mandate somewhere that classic characters like Mighty and Ray, at least for the IDW series, cannot exist in the modern continuity. But of course the mandates are stupid and your idea would make a fitting return for the literal lifeless floating accessory mostly there to fill a team slot that Eggman left for the last minute, to counter Tails' attempt to grow more independent.

To be fair, the modern characters have at least acknowledged the classic characters in the most recent TailsTube episode, which also possibly hinted at Trip being the next guest at the end. So it might be possible that Sonic Team is trying to give some classic only characters official modern designs. Again, it's only a small possibility, but a small possibility is still a possibility.
Zonki in my discord gave me this video idea. Really cool find that if you modify your battle mode robot then the boss changes accordingly. Looking at the movesets of the boss it really fits metal sonic.
I found the easiest way was to go after the emerald rings, they will give you 5 coins every emerald ring. That or do Golden Capital and get tons of rings.

I found its easiest to hop on an online match. There's very few players so you'll mostly have to fight bots. Every win nets you 10 coins so I was able to get 2 prototypes done in an hour
I'm glad Sonic 2's Mecha Sonic returned in this game. S3&K's Mecha was TOO popular as S2's was heavily ignored to be honest. Glad S2's Mecha gets his shine back!

He’s just a transformation of Metal Sonic, so not only visually is he not the real Mecha, but story-wise he isn’t either, and considering how many people only know him from SMBZ, that means Mecha Sonic is actually incredibly obscure, lol.

They're all collectively called "The Prototypes" since they're all template designs meant to be iterated on. Battle Mode is a prequel game mode where Eggman is deciding which one will be the best to use for the plan.

The red thing Eggman's on top of makes sense visually for that attack, and I don't see Metal Sonic piloting that device, feels out of character. Plus, its twin lasers. by-the-by, as well as Metal Trip and Metal NiGHTS, Metal Amy is supposed to use the Green torso, as can be seen in her concept art.
You could also fight the neutral robot (which also appears in these fights)
When I first loaded up the game I changed my Mecha to Mecha Sonic (or Silver Sonic) and had no idea this boss was dependent on your Battle Mode Mech
