The Purge Movie Description:
In an America ravaged by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government sanctions an annual 12-hour period during which all criminal activity -- including murder -- is legal. James Sandin (Ethan Hawke) and his family face the ultimate test when an intruder drags the vicious outside world into their home. James, Mary (Lena Headey) and their two children struggle to survive the night while trying not to turn into monsters like the ones they are striving to avoid.
The Purge is a 2013 American dystopian action horror film written and directed by James DeMonaco. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder as members of a wealthy family who find themselves endangered by a gang of murderers during the annual Purge, a night during which all crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. The Purge premiered at the Stanley Film Festival on May 7, 2013, and Universal Pictures theatrically released it in the United States on June 7, 2013. The film grossed $89 million against a $3 million budget.
It is the first installment in the Purge franchise. A sequel, subtitled Anarchy, was released worldwide on July 18, 2014. A third film, Election Year, was released July 1, 2016, and a prequel, The First Purge, was released on July 4, 2018, and a television series, set between the second and third films, aired for two seasons from September 4, 2018, to December 17, 2019. A fifth film, The Forever Purge, was released on July 2, 2021.

So this one is pretty good because it started the saga, but honestly Purge 2 and 3 are way better in my opinion. It doesn't follow the story of this family, it's all new characters but worth a watch.

I think the second movie answers how the purge solved poverty.
I wouldn't say the security system thing is a flaw. It's true. No security system is 100% failsafe. They're more of a deterrent. If someone is determined enough, they WILL get in.
I've never watched these movies, but my mind when they said the purge solved poverty is that essentially during this time people (whether that be the average layman or militarized forces) basically aimed to taking down all homeless/lower classified peoples which would technically "solve" the problem.
And since it happens every year, whenever poverty starts to rise due to circumstances they rinse and repeat. The thought process is that all the disposable/desperate/unhinged people (in the eyes of the government) with a few trained forces that are heavily armed are out during this night so they'll take each other out.
The main populace thinks it's working/a good thing since they see the whole headlines of, "Poverty has gone down, there's less violence day to day, etc." but it's a sanctioned killing spree so they (the government) don't have to actually address these issues in a moral and ethical way.

the purge doesn't solve poverty. it gets rid of the poor because they can't afford to protect or defend themselves but it doesn't solve poverty. They just sweep it all under the rug and don't do anything to actually help anyone. The NFFA are liars and murderers. They've been faking since the first purge to make it look like it works and use the purge as an excuse to kill anyone who uncovers the truth about what they're doing
I don’t think this will ever happen. However, I think some people WANT this to happen. At the very least, I hear and/or see people talk seriously about it enough that I’m sure there’s quite a few people that wish this would come to pass.
I mean to be honest you never know what the future could hold but I will agree on that and also you have crazy ass people that are literally psychos and the most craziest people on the planet

It is not going to happen because even if we did have a purge, people will still be committing crimes 365 days a year. This movie just creeps me out. I definitely don't want it to ever happen. It's terrifying. There is so much hate in the world and you know people want this to happen, which is so messed up.
This type of purge would basically kill all forms of entertainment, sports, and service industry. People wouldn’t want to be in any type of public forum for fear of angering someone and thus becoming a victim. It would also cause most of society to be fractured as people isolate themselves to avoid interacting with others and increasing their odds of becoming a purge victim. And let’s talk about the psychological effects of having to act a part all year long just to avoid conflict that might lead to a purge retaliation. It would not be that simple or straightforward like this movie makes it out.
Idk about that. I mean sure in the short term, but overtime it would create an entire generation of people totally unafraid. That weakness that is so common nowadays would be totally bred out. Not to say that I'd condone or want the purge to be a thing, but tbh it would have it's benefits.
I mean maybe there would be less people trying to get into the entertainment industry but I also think that celebrities would have enough money to just fly to another country while the purge is happening
@@borarosalia but not every person in the public eye is rich. Sure some movie stars can afford to fly away (but not all)? And do they leave family and friends behind to suffer their fate)? What about people who work retail and happen to anger someone? Or even content creators? Maybe Mello has the funds to leave the country but what if he doesn’t? It would send people into a constant state of isolation that it would ruin the economy for years, if not decades, before it could correct itself. And if voters aren’t quickly convinced of its benefits, then they will vote out pro-purge politicians within the first few years.
If you isolate yourself from others, I'd say that decreases your chance of becoming a victim because you probably didn't piss anyone off.

The little boy was the best person in the movie. Next to the Black guy. He wasn't to blame for what happened. The fact that there was such a thing as the "purge", was the issue.

What I do love about the purge movie, is that you can not trust anyone. If the purge was a real thing, could you still trust some of the people around you? Thats what makes this movie scary and messed up, that people wear a mask all year round till the purge comes.
I think it's nuts to think that the entire Purge franchise chronologically takes place between 2014 - 2048, more or less.

This film was inspired by the Classic STAR TREK episode "The Return of the Archons" from 1967!
It's not about robbing banks that solves poverty. It's the fact that poor people cannot afford to Bunker down their house and so they are the ones that get killed off more than the rich and the middle class who can afford to secure their homes and ride it out. The homeless and the very poor are the ones that end up dying the most every Purge.
And people don't see the how they are doing this anyways.
I think the only reason that the Purge COULD happen, as a hypothetical, is because there are still a lot of racist people out there including politicians (whether they're showing their true colours or not they're there). The 2nd and 3rd movies dive deeper into the politics and really show you the worst humanity has to offer. But yeah, that's my two sense.
Why are people acting like the boy wanting to help someone who was asking for help makes him responsible for everyone else's choices? He didn't make the rich people continue to hunt him, they could easily have gone off and looked for someone else to kill
I loved the first purge crime didnt exist instead people partied but when the government seen that they werent purging they hired mercenaries to start purging then everyone joined in XD
That and so they can just kill those they want to keep them down IE poor people

One of the most creative ideas ever conceived for film.
A suspense drama-thriller with social commentary is so out of the box.
The psychology, action and horror truly compliment it.
Committing whatever crime possible or just directly taking out your frustration on select people you hate in 12 hours is scary stuff.
I knew that 4 of the 5 films took place in the 2020s.
But i had forgot which part of the decade (2022 ?!, holy crap).
Hooked in since the first film, it had me thinking about how much further could the story go in potential sequels.
Also it had me pondering about the state of our nation and it's people in power.
Not too many would agree with this purge, me being one of those people.
I'm only here for Mell's comments, like that one "Shit, I'd be like 'I do', PA PA PA PA!" 🤣🤣
You got to finish this franchise Mell. The start going to action thriller instead of horror thriller. But they’re still entertaining to watch.
Definitely check out the sequels ! They show what was happening in the streets, in poor neighborhoods, and how all of this started . I like all of the sequels better than the original actually . Go for it !

Just commenting halfway through watching the video, this isn't what the film makers or anyone is wanting for the future. This film is satire making fun of the evil and stupid. The following Purge films clarifies this even further.
Recommendation for you to react: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012), this movie is underrated.

The neighbors have the same security system, but the lead's family made a lot of money from it, but the neighbors had to*tighten their belts* to pay for it.
You should at least check out the 2nd one then off that decide if you want to see the 3rd. But I'd stop at 3

I probably I have with this franchise is that they say they say all crime is legal for 12 hours, but only fixate on killing when you can do a lot more. I wouldn't want to snuff someone out unless I had to, but I could see myself looting a store or 2 in a situation like that if I could get away with it. The question is if can get arrested if I still have it after the 12 hours is over 🤔

Tony's song Classic went viral btw, he's in a duo called MKTO, both him and Malcolm Kelly were very famous child and teen stars, you'd recognise the shows they were on but their music is amazing and Tony's voice is incredible. He dated Demi Lovato when they were on As The Bell Rings together and MKTO went on tour with Taylor Swift to make a guest appearance. Highly underrated men

The husband in this movie feels like the husband in Hereditary. He did the LEAST bad things but he's getting shit like he's at fault for any of this.
If the intruders were smart, they’d have found the daughter, gagged her, and put her in one of the masks so the dad would kill her thinking she was one of them.
So I would recommend checking out all the movies, I think this is a pretty solid series but I also recommend checking out the TV series. The TV series does a really good job of building the world and showing what it’s like pre and post purge. It’s a very fun watch and I honestly love that this series has become what it is.

The main fear at the end of each Purge is knowing that even after you survived, there is another one waiting next year.

To understand why it’s happening you have to keep watching all the movies each one has a meaning and a cause onto why this day once a year was created it’s not just a film it’s politically and psychologically genre of events, the society classes get represented in each film. Not everyone has money to stay safe but even with money your not happy and safe either it’s brilliant!!

I think this franchise is alright at best. Its cliche as all hell and I kinda luv it.Also these New Founding Fathers. Who are they? I dont think even the movies tell us who they are actually. If they did then they did a bad job at it. And besides those clowns wouldnt get past congress to even let this become law anyway XD!
I will still never understand why the people who can travel (money, family, connections) during this time period choose not to. I’d leave the country a week before and come back a week after. Even a 2-week vacation in a crappy cheap motel right over the border is better than this. Even if you have the best security system in the world, people can still get in if they are motivated and have the right equipment
Plot twist - This is ALREADY the world we live in in America. The only difference is, we don't advertise it.
So, back in the day, my grandparents were considered wealthy and they had a lot of pull. But they also treated everyone with respect. They owned a farm and had a company store to sell stuff to the people living there as sharecroppers and the general public. Other farms treated their share croppers poorly by jacking up the prices and selling them poor quality goods. My grandparents were so trustworth, one night this black dude, who was related to one of their sharecroppers knocked at their door. He had been accused of stealing or something petty and a lynch mob was chasing him so they could hang him. They let him and hid him under their bed. My grandmother stood ready with a shotgun. A few minutes later, the sheriff knocked on the door, saying they were looking for so and so, have they seen him. My grandfather told them they hadn't, so the lynch mob moved on. In the morning, my grandparents had the guy hide in the back floor of their car and covered him with a blanket and took him to some relatives in another county to hide until it blew over. If I was in a secure house like that, I would wait it out, but I would also have my entire family armed with semi-automatic rifles watching from the second floor and shoot anyone who threatened our security until the Purge was over.

Whats powerfull about these movies is the tension building as if you are preparing to go to a massive party. The family dynamics, conversation setting, it really feels tense and grand. An night of importance and unpredictability.

1:55 I haven’t seen the intro clips to this movie in years so I don’t remember what they’re like but I can guarantee you could replace all the clips with stuff they didn’t want to show on the news from the 2020 riots and you couldn’t even tell the difference

This is the only good one like SAW Jurassic Park and so many others. Rare a sequel is good or better like Terminator 2. Actually thinking about it aside from Terminator 2 and Rocky 2 I am not a fan of Any Sequel. Rocky was good til the fight with the Russian in iv then died.

It would be cool if The Purge took place in the 70's in a closed down police precinct.
The reason some think is can happen is because of laws like the one that will pass in 2023 in Chicago Illinois.
On January 1st, 2023, in Chicago Illinois the “SAFE-T” Act (Safety, Accountability, Fairness, and Equity-Today) will commence.
Part of the SAFE-T Act eliminates cash bail, meaning criminals who commit misdemeanors or non-violent crimes under the amount of $1000.00 or non felony charges the police will not act.
OMG I never watched someone with this perspective before 💀💀💀. Like deadass me and my family was rocking heavy with the little kid. Especially because he was the only one that didn't want that brother dead. Like wtf y'all need to have some humanity or jesus or something 🤣🤣🤣. That's why I know if a purge does happen then black people are FUCKED.
And I don't think people actually think a purge will happen but if you watch this and the other purge movies and tv show you will see the similarities between the characters/dialogue and what the real life republican party spews. This movie was fine... but the SEQUELS really get into the nitty gritty of what the purge would mean for most of us. This is just a dolled up home invasion movie. The sequels get to the nitty gritty of what this means of less advantegous communities like where most of us live....
I think you misunderstood the reason why it „works“ in this movie. For example: the poverty rate drops, not because the poor and homeless steal money during the purge, it drops because the poor and homeless are the first do get unalived by the class above them and so on. So obviously the statistic gets better on paper. The „poor“ can’t afford any of the expensive protection systems the rich have. It‘s basically a social criticism of how the cruel reallity is ignored. Ignorance is bliss. In this case they force themselves to ignore it.
I’ve always thought this was extremely unrealistic but entertaining. The after effects of purge nights would be catastrophic, and I don’t see how a supposedly peaceful, ordered society could withstand them.

It only works for first few years than everybody becomes 10x more violent every year explained in the tv show
