    I think Jimmy Butler is a great example of when players request trades because they know their team just doesn't wanna win. He had a good 76ers team but that situation couldn't work over time, and the T-Wolves and Bulls were, well, not as competitive as he wanted them to be. You made a great point about Dame staying in Portland for the money, not loyalty. The supermax was designed to create images of loyalty like Dame, Giannis, Joker, etc., but Dame's team simply wasn't competitive, whether that's intentional or by sheer incompetence. Now that Dame is requesting a trade, he seems like a hypocrite

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Dang I should have used Butler as an example. That's a good point. Jimmy was different because the Bulls shipped him out and he hated Minnesota from the jump. He was dealt a bad hand. He didn't sign there. I agree with your dame take. When he extended last year, I think he knew he was most likely going to bail.

      @@whatslaps Do you think players should be held to their teams when they sign these super max contracts? It seems like more star players sign the dotted line and then demand trades. On the other hand, I don't think teams should be able to hold their star player captive by being able to pay them more than other teams without building around that player

      Facts idk why people are mad at guys trying to better their careers and situations, cause they same people that say your career don’t mean nothing unless you get a chip and also people quit, change jobs, even walk out, sue jobs every day so that he signed a contract stuff don’t make since to me

    Mid-game trade is particularly rough. The concept of neutral/negative asset idea is kinda crazy because, based on the contract/money, a (super)star player can still be seen as “not worth having”. Teams gotta be careful with who they let sign these giant deals. Loyalty/fandom is an interesting dynamic. How guys conduct themselves in the midst of trade request time is important for their public image (dare I say legacy?). Overall this trade request stuff has been a little weird, in a way I get it from the player’s perspective, but in a way it seems a bit inappropriate in the sense of honoring the contract with the team that you signed with. So basically 🤷‍♂️, I guess it’s all fair in the end. Fun vid as always, appreciate you, thank you for your stuff.

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. A player can be great, but that doesn't mean he's worth trading literally anything for. It's a paradox, most casuals won't understand.
      2. As a player you can lean into the fandom aspect of the game, but it comes with expectations that you're not going to want to fulfill.
      3. Every player and team should use whatever leverage they got to get what they want. That's business, baby. No hard feelings.
      4. It's time I come clean. It's possible that I haven't eaten a corndog in over 20 years.

    You have literally no idea what Damian Lillards mindset was in Portland and to say he stayed there so long for "greed" and not loyalty, is to say he is a liar. Which is a nasty thing to say without knowing it to be true

    I disagree, franchise waste careers just for a dollar, or not able to put guys around them because there not competent to, telling me blazers have all them assets and couldn’t make 1 move but pay grant 160 million? Think player movement is good but harden doin yo much I agree

    • @whatslaps
      @whatslaps  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but if this were a non entertainment business employees would just sign shorter contracts because most people try avoid litigation. Unfortunately in entertainment litigation becomes a news story. Which gives both parties leverage in really ugly way. I respect what Lebron did in Cleveland by just signing one year with options contracts.
