You might not know this?! Girl I remember knowing you as THE prop stylist. Following you in the Chicago days is what taught me what home and prop styling even is.
This was fun but I would love to see some non-celebrity favorites if you do this again. Or maybe even just looking at vintage interior design books or magazines. I'm a librarian and love looking at the archives for design images.
My mother has always been passionate about interior design. She has amazing taste and all of our homes were impeccable. She did it all on a shoe string budget but I know that her biggest investment over the years has to have been the amount of money she spent on *allllll* of the design magazines. She would find a store somewhere near where we lived that would get in the magazines from abroad back when that just wasn’t a thing here in Canada. Often times she paid the store owner a fee to get them imported because she was literally the only person who even knew they existed. She’s culled her collection as she’s downsizing, but she still has stacks and stacks of them. I remember almost every one of the covers from the mid 80’s on. What a trip lol. We used to sit on the couch with a cup of tea and flip through the latest editions and critique every inch of every picture, comparing what we liked and didn’t like. My mother could recall exactly what image she wanted and go into her stacks and find the edition and present it to us. I feel like I got a comprehensive education on interior design over the course of my childhood and teenage years. We’d often comment on the styling of the photos and the importance of setting up tableaus around a space was imprinted on us. I think it’s that one skill that has always made our own spaces stand out. People enter our homes and always comment on how much they love them. None of us has the money to spend on extraordinary items or art, but we know how to style what we have to make a statement. It’s probably the most important skill to develop re interior design. You can have an architecturally stunning room full of great pieces, but if you don’t know how to arrange all the objects to take advantage of it all, it’ll just be kind of “meh”. Really fun to hear about your experiences in that world, Paige. Thanks for the trip down memory lane 😊
Hate to be the corrections lady, but -- the Cindy Crawford home is in Mexico, not Malibu. John Travolta and Kelly Preston were married until she passed away. Also you might want to note that Architectural Digest had an iconic editor: Paige Rense. She is credited with taking it from that LA based "journal" of the early 20th century, to the massive force the magazine became. She was editor from 1975 to 2010. Love hearing about your work!
Thank you for saying everything I wanted to. This reminds me of how young she is. I'm so lucky to have grown up with Architectural Digest during the Paige Rense years, when she had her absolute rules about being featured in her pages.
I'm ✈ watching this video, and you saying "look at this--" so often with your enthusiasm got me cracking up 🤣you're very cute, I love it. Thank you for taking us down memory lane in Arch Digest Home Tours and your work history 💛
there are certain lines in this vid that SCREAM chaos - asking if john travolta and kelly preston are still married was the wildest one to me lmfao. Love AD and your content
10:42 Being into airplanes, I can see, but Travolta definitely wants to live in an airport here, albeit a really nice one. Even that countertop looks kind of like a service desk or a coffee station in an airport lounge.
Girl, I had so much fun. It was just so good knowing how your part of the history in that legacy and realizing that that’s an actual Cearer, you just opened up my mind that I could actually be a prop Stylest thank you.
If you don’t prop style as much anymore, how would you describe what you do now? What different trajectory has your career taken? Are you dedicating more time to your business and designing for WAS? I think this would be a great video idea that I’m sure lots of people would love to watch!
I think part of the charm of Dakota Johnson's house that everyone loves is that in addition to the cool mid century look and feel of her place, it was so unexpected and kind of understated. We expected bigger, grander and/or hipper of her. It was such a cool surprise. Now, of course, she sold that place and moved in with Chris Martin into bigger, grander, typical Malibu.
Loving this style of video! Would also love to see more non-celeb stuff - like IKEA catalogues from 80s and 90s are pretty cool to look at, crazy seeing how much stuff from my childhood is coming back, the yellow wood the lamps, the glass and chrome... !
before elton john sold his atlanta condo, it was right across from my mom's job - funny story, elton john has an insane 20th century photography collection and my family got to see part of it in london at the tate museum and my mom got such a kick out of it because we crossed the atlantic ocean to see something that was across the street from where she worked :)
I’d never heard of Architectural Digest until the early 90s because a co-worker (and still close friend) had a subscription and would bring them to work. She also hipped me to the Spiegel catalog, from which I got some of my best office gear and even a couple of things for the house. One was a swing-arm floor lamp that’s in my living room to this day. Magazines, film, and catalogs definitely informed my style and helped me figure out who I am design-wise.
Oh Diane Keaton (a fav of mine as well) is way older than your moms! I’m 53 and your mom looks young like my age?? Of course Diane is 🔥 at her age! I too admit to love some Lauren ( like his knits and some interior stuff) and MAJORLY love Keaton 💕 I threw out all my clothes post some scary surgery and became an emo/keaton grown up! Ha seriously all I have is black, taupe grey, turtleneck knit dresses! Diane went kinda of Industrial and modern. And I believe she’s really big into interiors (which you’d dig!) and Lauren ahh he has a section for the “poorer” people on his online store that’s where I shop 🤭 kidding! I’m mostly all thrift ha. I think Lauren is great in “touches”. And Diane has totally changed design wise, since back then! These were fun Paige! Some of the excess is just sooo funny with the Hollywood folk! I’ve never liked super large homes or mansions. I’m a small cottage girl all the way. Or the homes in London the Victorian terraced houses ( through rooms?) I love how they end in the kitchen the heart of the home and then out to garden for like night time entertaining ahhh **So Paige if you want to do a whole show, showing the best London terraced homes with the through rooms?? I’m there for it!! 💕 yes def do some more and those English through homes pls On a funny note .** I love hearing about prop design! Im a Gen x gal graduated in 88. I was in love with fashion and styling but most specifically magazines! (Before kindle ruined my life) I wanted to badly to be the one who set up the “layout” and how it looked and picked out the clothes etc. but…..I grew up in upstate ny and they didn’t know what the hell I was talking about and my guidance counselors failed!! So I did Sociology at Hunter and later my school librarian media degree. Guess it was for the best because kindles came and there went magazines. Yes there’s a few but the times of tons of magazines at the supermarket is gone 😭 anyway point of the that story 🤷♀️ yours is a unique job and guidance counselors need to be more up and with the times with different types of careers!! 💕 😅
I stumbled upon an open house for the old home of Max Factor that was on sale, so my friends and I went in. So much color and architectural style. It was delightful!
A friend gave me the Winona edition of AD back in ’94. Haven’t read it in 30 years, but I still remember her talking about not liking kitsch (as I was looking at the deer head on my wall…haha). If memory serves, I think her designer was a friend and former actor. I love that you pulled that one out of the archives. So interesting to go through the ones you styled. Glad to hear the people were cool.
Micheal Keaton's ranch house at 5:36 looks SO Utah/Idaho, like every vaguely apres-ski adjacent interior I've seen here. I'm definitely not one of the bougie skiing elite, but my bf's family like to take these types of vacations, so it totally brought on weird familiar vibe and not necessarily in a cool way 😆.
I love that you used the term “salty” 🤣🤣 I am from Chicago also, born and raised and now in the burbs and I remember saying that a lot when I was in high school 🤣🤣🤣 Lane Tech HS class of 98!!
Loved this! I only subscribed last year so it's really fun to see old editions-especially ones you worked on. I feel like nowadays the majority of the magazine is ads with a few beautiful pictures at the end.. I may just have to pick up some copies from the 90s-early 2000s!
Would love if you could do a video showing some prop styling techniques people could use when taking pics of their own small apartments! (Assuming you haven't already done one 😅)
Super cool video, Paige - loved hearing the inside scoop and your insights on it all! Also a side note - bought a condo near the Broadway Antique Market a few years back and it’s certainly worth the hype you attribute to it! Love your videos! ❤
Elton John is remembered for his sunglasses!! 😂😂 Holy carp, Paige! You're young. 😮😊 How about he's remembered for decades of incredible, inspired, genius music and songs? ❤ This was a super fun video. Please keep doing you ❤
I’m a big Elton John fan actually! Just didn’t realize he has wall to display his icon sunglasses which totally is something he is remembered by, outside of his music of course
I found really interesting all the insight and all the little things that go into a photo shoot, It'd be cool if you made a video showing the ones you've worked on
would also be fun to compare how the styles have changed - like if someone who's home has been in ad (diane keaton) has done ad house tour, to see whether you can still see their "style essence" or if they've completely transformed stylewise
I love old ADs. There was an early or mid 2000s one with David Bowie on the cover at my doctor's office. I may have or may have not slipped it into my bag. Kelly Preston died several years ago, but they were still together.
I had no idea the furniture would be moved for the pics. Such odd seating I would think! Can you do a video on how the seating would be IRL and vice versa?
I'm so curious - forgive me if you've answered this before, but how did you get your start in prop styling? Did you take a course or apprentice to someone? Or did the prop styling jobs come out of your magazine internship?
I assisted multiple different prop stylists for about 2 years! Started taking on smaller gigs and was able to slowly transition out of assisting. I did major in communications/pr but learned everything I know through experience. I do credit my major for helping me land the gigs though and my knack for making great relationships with the clients. If this interests people I could def make a newsletter or maybe some sort of vid about it
@@wasselpa Thank you for answering - yes, I'd love to hear more! It was cool to get a peek into the process in this vid. Not a career I was even aware of before I found your channel.
Have you seen the book Edgar Miller and the Handmade home? The subtitle is Chicagos forgotten Renaissance Man. Wow, mind blowing. I lived in Chicago for years and never heard of him. You gotta check it out

Guidance Counselors need to have a book: careers in styling that you didn’t even know existed!!? 🧐
This was fun but I would love to see some non-celebrity favorites if you do this again. Or maybe even just looking at vintage interior design books or magazines. I'm a librarian and love looking at the archives for design images.
