    I bought a Level8 carry on in 2022 as a promise to myself that I would return to traveling. I thought it seemed amazing. Never used so far. But now I am looking at flights and find it is too large for most airlines. Level8 recently reached out to me to address my issue and sent me the list of 64 airlines dimension restrictions carry on. It proved my point. On the Level 8 site they list over 60 airline size limits for carry on. Only 15 of those airlines allow a carry on of this size. I spent a lot of money for a bag that is going to end up at a yard sale. Very disappointing.

      Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to carry-on, basically because each airline sets its own size standards. That being said the Level 8 Road Runner falls within most size restrictions or is within less than half an inch difference for most of the major carriers we use. It's still a usable case and I would try to carry it on, worst case scenario the airline carrier makes you gate-check it. Thanks for watching and if you fit one that fits them all do let us know.

      What the carriers put as their measurements doesn't matter, cause the bins and the airplanes are all made by Boeing, Airbus, or Embraer, so they don't make different size bins for different airlines. Just never see an airline employee face-to-face and they'll never see your bag until you're walking onto the plane. If you check-in online and bring a mobile boarding pass you won't see anyone until the gate agent and they're not really paid to care.

    I think the first thing you need to do is measure the bag and let people know that it won’t pass the size test with most airlines. They should make a bag with wheels that retract. I’ve always believed that’s the loophole in the airline bag size saga.

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately there is no one bag to rule them all currently. What we really need is for all the airlines worldwide to get on the same page as to size restrictions. I think there are far more luggage makers and styles than there are planes in the airlines fleet, Airbus and Boeing are selling the same aircraft to everyone. That would make it a lot easier to create a carry-on that would work for all of a person's travels on any airline in the world. I will double check my description and add the measurements if I did not. Thanks for watching and the comment.

      @@TheRetiredTravelers I totally agree with you on that. If airline companies won’t change, it could be a great marketing tool for luggage companies. Make bags to scale for the industry instead and market them as such. I’d buy two different sizes if I knew which airline I would fly on. I’ve travelled around the world and I have always been compliant. What makes me mad is the aircrew allowing some people with a carry on, a large shopping bag, a purse, and a custom framed picture which had to be stored in the crew area.

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, it really depends on the crew and what kind of day they are having as to what person can or can not bring on board. We are really starting to prefer train travel as much as possible especially outside the US, it makes for a lot less stress on a travel day.

    • @havek23
      @havek23 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nobody's tried to force me to stick my luggage into a metal measuring frame since like 2009 and I've traveled to about 20 countries and 20 US States. If the plane is full enough that they're worried about space, they gate check people's bags for free. The only issue I've had before was weight and that was only cause I was checking a bag and it was slightly overweight so they asked to weigh my carry-on too, but if you are only having a carry-on and you check-in online, use a mobile boarding pass, you never are at any checkpoints where they can process a credit card and make you pay extra for something.

    How stable are the wheels? Will it tolerate a personal bag over the handle? I just bought the away but it didn’t have the front

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว

      They feel stable, and you can slide a bag over the handle and rest it on the top of the case, it seems to tolerate it well. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    Not for me I don’t like the hard case style of luggage… it’s too big for some European travel hand luggage. I’ve seen hard cases put in checked luckgage fall apart, dent ams ding…

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had good luck so far with ours but I agree they are just not making things, in general, the way they used to. It seems like my parents used the same set of luggage my entire life. Also, the people handling the luggage don't always handle it with much care either. Thanks for watching!

    Just found you today; Level 8 at 7.7 lbs (20"), vs. my old Aerolite at 5lbs. Aerolite wins. (I'm 70-ish, still travel and don't want ANY extra weight to lift above my head). I'm not a fan of clam shell styles, either, however; those pockets on the Level 8 are a zipper-junkie's dream :) . I'm curious after seeing one YT travel-tip video: if it's possible to open the 8's zipper(s) by jamming a pen into it to force it open? How about the Monos? I don't know of any zipper that would thwart that kind of intrusion, so I'm anxious to know what you find out. Might be worth the extra 2 lbs. for the security. Good video...thanks!

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      JJ, I have seen that video and do not have to destroy the zippers on the Level 8 or Monos to tell you neither would withstand that kind of attack. My father always says that locks only keep out the honest people, meaning that if you give someone enough time they will find a way into whatever you have locked. The only way around that would be to go with one of the aluminum cases (no zippers on them at all) and both Monos and Level 8 have those in their lineup but the are both 3 to 5 pounds heavier than what you have.
      Personally if I had made it to 70-ish years young and had a case that worked for me that I could handle, I would save the money and stick with it. I try not to keep anything of real value in my carry-on anyway and if our laptops are in there and we get gate checked or are forced to check it we remove them and put them in out backpacks. Hope that helps and we really appreciate you watching!

      @@TheRetiredTravelers Not to mention that anyone with a TSA key, which are easier to duplicate than they should be, will be able to open your bag without any signs of damage. lol

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Larry That's true the locks, zippers, and keys only keep out the honest people. Not to mention that nowadays they make carry-ons so lite someone could just pick it up and run off with it, I'm too old to chase after someone for my socks and underwear ;)

      @@TheRetiredTravelers LOL...for just that reason, I've seriously been thinking about getting something sturdy, but thrashed and then put little kid stickers or even paint the surface (my art is a joke) so it's not something a thief would want to touch. It would stand out on a carousel, as well as so identifiable across baggage claim/other, that it would be easy to follow. But...being 70-ish, running after my crap sure wouldn't be me...:)

    Thank you for the reviews on both Monos and Level 8. Yes please I'd love a comparison with both. I am in a search for a good carry-on also that is big but small enough where I won't have problem fitting in the overhead bins.

    • @TheRetiredTravelers
      @TheRetiredTravelers  ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually have a video posting tomorrow that compares them side by side. I do not think you will have a problem with either case fitting in overhead compartments. The Level 8 is 38 liters and the Monos is 36 but both are within the requirements for carry-on. If you want to see the new video and you are not subscribed you can head over to our channel and click on the "notify me", I have discount codes for both in the description as well.
